I remember the days of telling one of my first boyfriends not to hold my hand in the mall because I was afraid of the public reaction. I was afraid of being killed or verbally ridiculed by strangers, just for being gay. I can only imagine how much worse it was, even earlier than that time (the early/mid 2000s).
I'm now engaged and sad to say that I STILL care about public opinion. I'm now engaged to my boyfriend of 8 years, but both of us are too afraid to shop for engagement rings. I don't think that shame and fear of public scrutiny has ever left us and that is a very depressing thought to know that we have came far in gay rights and social acceptance, but still don't feel as comfortable with such "normal" relationship activities.

Hey Matin, thanks for sharing your long-awaited first boyfriend story. Its hard to believe you had to run from the police just for a kiss in a car :( I feel bad for everyone in the world who just cant be themselves and love who they want. I loved your t-shirt story it reminded me of when i was in school i took a notebook belonging to a boy i had a crush on as it had his smell on it. I think when you are young and in the closet you will do anything to fill that void of love.

I'm from Iraq 28 yrs old and I've been trying to make it out of here for the past 12 years but they just don't give visas to Iraqis that easily...... Still trying - any help or guidance would be much appreciated. From ur neighbor country

I have seen videos of lots of migrants coming through the US Southern border. I even saw a YT video of a group of Indian guys, not gay, get a visas to Guatemala. And then they traveled all the way to the US Southern border and were taken to California which is a Sanctuary State. From the US you can then go to Canada?? Sorry, i know so little. You would need to do your research first.
The best way is to get admission to a college in Canada. I don't know if they need you to prove that you can pay the fees. If you get someone to help you cover your finances for a short time. As soon as you get to Canada you start looking for a job. Sorry, that is all I know. Hopefully Martin sees your post and provides you the info you need.
Great story to share - hopefully you pay attention more to the red flags when you are dating. It will always be a gamble but sometimes it is worth it.. at the end we gain experience and mature from it.

I don’t think I’m alone in hoping no one else messes with your adorably open heart! How dare they! I’m older than you, so I’ve had QUITE a few experiences of random dates and even more random moments in long term relationships… not to mention an epic catfishing experience where I too followed through with the date AND met up with him a second time 😵💫🤪 People pleasing is a HARD habit to break!! So don’t feel too dysfunctional for having weird experiences. It's alright relationship is hard work. Just work at it one day at a time. Personally I don't think moving fast is necessarily a bad thing when you meet the right person. I went on one date with my partner and we pretty much knew this was it. Then we confirmed our relationship after a week. Now, 8 years later we're still together.

I live in Iraq and it's more or less the same here on the homophobia scale, and I am also looking into getting to Canada, but it sounds quite expensive compared to where I live which is a big worry. I also am living with my parents and they're over 60 years of age, so I feel incredible guilt over leaving them considering I'm the only son with them right now. Any advice?

Those people are more tolerant toward non-muslims and LGBT.
You can ask a visa for East Asian country , like Philippines, Thailand, India , China , Mongolia where people are more individuals and does not really care of privacy , because Brazilian and Australian embassies risks to refuse you.
Iraq is extremely complex with tense relationships and so many countries are reluctant to deal with.
Make sure European countries is impossible for Middle Eastern people now …

I expect real sanctions toward MENA communities. Especially with mosques , halal food and hijab.
Latino and Chinese are allowed to not not integrate but i think MENA have to assimilate into Canadian White values.

I was blessed with my parents I came out when I was sixteen years old in the seventies and my mom was more cool than my dad at first then he said he loved me no matter what that was in the seventies and I came out to all my high school friends and they were like okay cool 😎 I’m so proud of you
