After watching two other videos with pretty much the identical procedure, I watched yours: your video was so much better than the others. Rather than some annoying music you actually narrated the procedure in a very clear and helpful manner. Thanks. Seems like this is a pretty major security flaw for windows 7...

thanks! 2 things to add:
- if sticky keys doesn't work, click on the red button on the bottom right and check box for sticky keys
- if your user name is 2 words, surround it in double quotes: net user "name1 name2" *
this was a KEY part in this the "" with two words on your username thank you!

I restarted my old Sony Vaio today and haven’t used it since 2014 after I finished college. Needless to say I forgot my password. I followed all this step by step and it worked! Thank you so much! (FYI for those of you reading, once you have renamed the system32 files, you can reset the passwords of additional users by simply clicking shift 5 times again and repeating the cmd prompt steps)

Thanks...I get bored and go through videos like this just to hear how people "pitch" their solution, and yours was very direct and straight-forward. Most of these are WAY too drawn-out and self-indulgent (i.e. they LOVE hearing themselves talk).
I'm the same way. I hate listening to them tell their story for 4 minutes and then start the tutorial. We try to keep it short and simple here as much as possible
I loaned out my spare desktop PC and when it was returned I had forgotten my password. Your video was step by step, clear and concise. I was successful and I'm saving this to a flash drive just in case . . .
I love you really, found my broken laptop after 7 years and apparently its working again, I was relieved to fin out.

Precise and direct video for the lost pass for Win7. Only note I would add, on my 2 laptops anyhow, is that after closing the notepad window and hitting "don't send" button, instead of having the option to click "finish" button, it just powered down/shutdown my laptops. I just restarted them, hit the "shift key" 5x to open command prompt and continued your instructions from there. Both laptops now have new passwords. Great job on your video.

GREAT, LIFE SAVER, I suggest you mention that if the user name is more than one word you will have to enclose the user name with quotes for example: SET USER "First User" * I had to figure that out. From an "Old Computer Guy".

It's also a good idea to make copies of setup and cmd and paste them in a different directory other than system32. The process in the video worked only once. When I tried to change the pword for a different account, every time I typed in "net user user name *" I would get a syntax error message listing the options for the command. I finally had to do the repair option system restore to get things back to normal
this hasn't worked went through everything then when rebooting went to the dual sign in but when pressed the shirt key 5 times nothing happened went back to the old screen wouldn't let me go any further back to having forgot password

Holy shitt this was really easy!! The first time i was on the screen which was repairing windows i did not get the windows which allow u to a note. But u have to try it one more time and it will allow this time. Thanks for this tutorial. Very helpfull

my computer doesn't give me an option to click on system repair, it says to insert the windows 7 disc to do the repair and i dont have a disc
Watch video from beginning again you need to reset your PC and when it begins booting up again, hit power so it turns off. Reload and the option you need will be there.
The same with me, no option for repair.
so this didn't work. I went through step by step and now says " The user profile service failed the login, user profile cannot be loaded "

I have never changed my password to my local pc and it’s kinda complicated password but I was unable access my computer with my password. what happens if you click 5 times the shift button and it doesn't pop up

I panicked because this didn't work for me, but I have a two word username, and by putting quotes around the two words in that final command... it worked and pulled up the chance to change my password. Whew! Thank you!!!

so once you change the files that you have renamed do you need to change it back or can you leave it as it is?
meaning if you forget your password again all you will need to do is press Shift 5 times and pop up cmd
or would you need to do the whole process everytime if you forget or lose your password again
Interesting! I'd never had to break in to the same computer twice. You don't have to change the file names back. I believe that if you leave the files, all you would need to do is press shift 5 times and change the password. I don't believe you would need to do the whole process again.
aha ok thanks that's is what I figured you would not have to redo the whole process but just making sure
say what if you had another account on the computer that does not have a password you could then access cmd that way and it would work I would think.
and another thing is I have heard of a way you can set your phone or email to recover the password

@@ambargonzalez83 same thing happened to me, but I named the files exactly as you showed. I changed setch to setch0. Then I copied cmd, pasted it at bottom of files in system 32, named it sethc. Then I restarted and was so happy until when my machine restarted pressing shift 5 times did nothing.

I got stuck there to once I put finish my screen went blank did we have to push the power button to restart it and then push the shift key 5 times once it gets to that screen

For everyone looking for SethC... When you are in your system32 folder make sure your file of type says ALL FILES at the bottom...then you will see SethC is in the applications...not the folders. Then you should also be able to find CMD as well.

This was very helpful for a 83-year-old geek wannabe who was trying to get into a friend's Windows 7 computer when she had forgotten her password. The only thing that would make it even more helpful would be a script that could be printed out as short-term memory is an issue for me.
