Good tip! Didn't realize they were high in calcium as well. Be worth growing them.

MotherOfManyHorses you use so little to feed that you only need a couple of flowers. I've had the same 3 lbs. bag for 2 years and havent even used a quarter of it yet. Thanks for watching!

I am not a rabbit expert. However, the consensus on the internet is rabbits should not be fed sunflower seeds including black sunflower seeds. As stated, they are high in fat; and rabbits reportedly are especially prone to concerns regarding fat. It has also been stated that rabbits cannot properly digest the husks, so any seeds that are fed need to be shelled.

I don’t mix the seeds in with the pellets. The rabbits throw the pellets all over the place looking for the seeds.

Will those sprout in my garden for me if I plant them? Would be nice to grow enough for next Winter. Thanks

I've seen on reviews that people have planted them and gotten beautiful, big flowers.

Hi From Central Australia, love the rabbit vids SouthWest so please keep them coming. While I don't recommend doing a processing vid (guaranteed people will attack you unfortunately as they just don't get what you're doing) it'd be nice for you to go over your thoughts (saw you responded to a comment on your very first vid where you apologized for getting philosophical - but I feel the same way). I havent started yet as for me it's hard to get the wife to understand the whole concept, and she just can't take the processing side of things. For me you present a level response and genuine care as apposed to some other vids presented on youtube. Anyway, thank you for the education & keep the vids coming. Any tips for someone hoping to start out would be great.

Warren Todd thank you for the kind words. Life has gotten kind of crazy for me so I had to step away from the camera for a bit, hopefully I have a bit of respite this week to finally get an update up. A processing video will surely happen eventually as well, I'm not overly concerned with negative reaction, I actually find it oddly amusing to hear from people who are so far disconnected from their food they think I'm the terrible one. I will do a video concerning my thoughts on the ethics of raising animals for meat soon, I have been wanting to for quite a while, but like I said I can get awfully philosophical and want to avoid a passion laced video in favor of a logical, thoughtful approach. Convincing a spouse can be difficult, my advice is dont push too far too fast, If shes never had rabbit I would try to find some butchered and suggest trying a meal. Its easier to start by seeing it in unrecognizable pieces. As for tips on starting, I believe I will do a how to get started video because I could type a book on the subject lol! Thank you for watching and thank you for commenting I love knowing that I'm reaching people with this knowledge and that its helping!

G'day Southwest, thanks for the reply and I'll look forward to future uploads when you get around to it.
Really appreciate the time & advice mate. It's nice to meet someone who thinks as I do, with a measured perspective, even if you are on the other side of the world. :-) I'll keep following & look forward to learning more from your experience when you have time.
Thank You Again & Kind Regards

Southwest Urban Homestead That's great! Regarding starting out in Oz over here info is scarce. Nationally all but 3x large scale meat rabbitries have been closed down due to relentless campaigning by anti meat rabbit lobby groups. Those people such as yourself who do this at home here are very quiet (as far as I know I will be the only person in a town of 25k look into it). In all my research I can't buy purpose built cages the way you can over there. While there's little info on others doing it for meat rabbits I'm looking at using 36 inch dog crates & then installing the floor myself. Buying the wire to build my own is the same price as buying the dog crates @ $60- each, so it cheaper to buy the crates and add the floor. Also looks like my nearest access to getting the rabbits will be 1500kms. Heat will be an issue here also being I live in the desert but will have to have a revolving supply of frozen water bottles. :-) In saying all that I'm going to forge forward and once armed with enough knowledge commence the adventure.
Regarding future vids a Handling rabbits one would also be good. Any rabbit I've known bites & kicks when handled and while I've read hold them close meat rabbits are a lot bigger than your average backyard bunny.
Anyway, thanks again & looking forward to see what you upload when you get to it.

Warren Todd It sounds like you've got some pretty bad obstacles there. The anti meat rabbit lobby has been trying here but they thankfully haven't been able to really gather steam. The dog crates will work well, you wouldn't even really need to add a floor unless cleaning daily isn't an option. Be cautious and add wire 6 inches (15.24cm) or so up from the floor too, If a rabbits head can fit through a gap their whole body can, and kits are escape artists. I've got a 12 lbs (5.4 kg I believe, not good with the weight conversions lol) doe that will knock her feeder out and pass through a 4 x 2 inch(10.16x5.08 cm) space. You've got a good heat management plan, dont forget shade either, shade makes the biggest difference. Handling rabbits is a good idea, I personally pick mine up as little as possible, they hate being picked up, the key is to hold them tucked into your elbow under your arm and support their back legs. Also accept that your going to at the very least get kicked lol. Hopefully the update will be up tomorrow evening, editing takes forever!

Can female Rabbits neuter male rabbits

    • @southwesturbanhomestead7209
      @southwesturbanhomestead7209  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Ronan Deegan Yes, any rabbit can fight any other rabbit and cause serious injuries, its rare but castration happens, even among males.

Ok thanks in all your time with Rabbits has it ever happened to you

    • @southwesturbanhomestead7209

Ronan Deegan the worst I've had happen was one of my does bit a good sized hole in my NZW bucks ear. The only other problem I've had was a female that got sexed wrong in with a pair of bucks and she started pulling their fur. As long as you're separating at the right age and watching when your animals are together you shouldn't have any major problems. Its a good idea to have some leather gloves handy when breeding as if a fight breaks out your going to be bitten and scratched, its not too bad but when they're fighting they can tear your hands up pretty good.
