Ok, I didn't find this song through Stranger things, but I literally thought the same thing, so when I forgot what song this was called- I went to youtube for Stranger Things playlist lmao 😭
I first heard this going across the Bay Bridge in San Francisco in my friends 55 thunderbird with the top off. Turned up the volume, it was great!!!! Great Cover.
I just realized, this many decades later, that The Bangles omitted the last verse of the song, and every version of the song since then has omitted that verse. So that means almost every cover of this song is a cover of The Bangles cover of this song and not a cover of Simon and Garfunkel.
Unbelievable. // Jesses, I have to share my won discovery. I had just learned that this was a Paul Simon song, which verymuch surprised me because I'm a big music guy (a pianist, actually). So here was my revelation about the Bangles sining this is a different key: The Paul Simon song here in D minor, which is known as a very stark key, the D-minor is relative to (and harmonically dependent on) F-major. F major is and open-sounding key, akin to lime-green colo. Nature. F-major has historically been used a key for the Pastoral, or "country-side" music (See Beethoven's "Pastoral Symphony in F." Therefore the song is certainly a reflection of the dark side of the seasons. "Hazy shade of winter," vs. the growth and hopefulness of spring (green). So, again, The Paul Simon composition is is D minor. What The Bangles do is us that relative-major of D-minor (F) and make it minor. The song is now in F-minor. Therefore ,they have created a Pastoral, but as heard in a negative or "dark" light. The most fascinating thing about the Bangles version is when you ask, what if the relative-MAJOR of F-minor. The answer is A-flat. Blue. The key of death. And, so, winter comes again.... My further rumations on the impact of choice of key can be found in Theory of Pitch Psychology here at: _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_
@@Acoustic-Rabbit-Hole I did not notice the shift in key. I think a combination of the keys being related and the increased tempo hide it from my ears.

My dad loved listening to The Bangles. I have such hazy memories that feel like dreams where the music is the loudest part of it. Various of his favorite bands, including this song in particular. Just enjoying this song during a snowstorm like a day or two before Christmas. So the memory popped up again & before it slipped away again I had to ask my dad for the song lol
I never saw Stranger Things or Umbrella Academy. I remember getting drunk and headbanging to this song at a bar in the 80s. After that, I went and bought the Less Than Zero soundtrack for this one song. I never saw that movie either. One of my all-time favourite songs.

Every so often a band makes a cover which sounds better than the original. What the Bangles did with this old Simon and Garfunkel song is just that. Still brilliant after all these decades.
It's hard to think of a group with better vocal harmony. Especially a group of women. In fact, other than perhaps the Supremes I cannot think of anyone who equals the Bangles.
They have nice voices but tbh I feel like their calm nature doesn't fit the song. This cover at least. I just wish someone with more of a hard rock voice would do a cover of this version
One of the VERY rare occasions where I love the original, but like the cover even more.
