The oyabun's blade is made slim for piercing and thrusting if you look at the Master Tanto which this knife is the folding version of you'll see it also has a slim type piercing type tanto style tip. This Oyabun is a extremely good piercing knife i have the Recon 1 tanto and the Code 4 as well as the voyager tanto version i have collected most of Cold steel martial folding knives and this Oyabun is a sleeper it pierced thick material better than the recon 1 tanto and the Code 4. My only grip about it is the pivot has slight play in it but the extra lock gave it the strength it needed to best its stronger big brothers. If i had my way i would of put the luzon large flush pivot screws on the oyabun plus they are silver. The pocket clip gives you quick access to the knife as well dont forget cold steel thinks martial self defense first most of the time and edc second!....God bless.

Both if you can afford them, cheap one to carry and collect the Lynn C. Thompson Signature Knife

Great looking knife, love those grinds! But a little larger, length and height, blade would make the proportions look much better

Ya, it's small for a cold steel for sure. I do wish it was bigger and had a more aggressive tanto like the recon1's. But it's a good little EDC knife for most people.

A valuable review, thank you! I've got both sizes of Cold Steel's Luzon; the 4" version seems very similar in terms of the stiff liner lock & flipping action. I found that lock to be rather uncomfortable, because your thumb can only catch the very edge of it, and it digs in (the 6" model is fine, albeit a bit large for edc). I'm not sure why they don't use a knurled plate-like surface on the lock, similar to what you get with their Ti-Lite (much more comfortable), but I'd assume it's to keep production costs down?

The blade looks too short for the handle length. The blade looks stumpy.

My first Cold Steel knife and biggest surprise .......looked better in photo online than in my hand. Like a US company using foreign manufacturing and cheap materials....... Thin gauge metal frame & open back with no middle support making it easy to bend together. Grey plastic bolsters and black plastic grip.......it looks a $10 knife. I paid $55. Might take a chance and buy another Cold Steel knife at some point. Although if this US company's attitude is make it cheap.....price it high and no concern of a customer feeling they're getting value. I'm done.........

This is what is happening since Lynn sold off the company to GSM Outdoors.

Ordered two last week. One would not lock into place fully open, even with the lock activated. With the lock activated, I could still move the blade back and forth. The second one I forced the liner lock into place and after a couple of opening and closing actions, it locks correctly now, but sometimes, the lock doesn't go into full lock, but only halfway. I don't trust either of them. The one I have returned. The blade is quite wide, surgically sharp, very pleasant. I will not buy this model again, nor recommend it. Rather buy a Ruike Tanto folder. The quality of those knives is far better than the Oyabun IMO.
