Europe: €65-72, a model with black coating @€56 at a clearance sale.
      2x what you paid.
Still, the reviews at this European shop are overall positive.
Honestly, the issues you have with the knife only show the importance of reading specs and watch reviews before you buy it. Avoidable disappointment, blahblah. It's a lightweight bootknife, made to conceal and to use in a "boot knife role", for which it ticks most boxes. It's no Srk or Recon, nor intended for outdoor survival, but it will beat those (and many other heavy utility or tactical knives) at Kobun's own intended niche role. I can't think of any covert carry defense blade with better inch per ounce ratio.
I do love my Recon, it feels great in hand. Swordlike. But I carry Kobun.

Just bought the new version of the Kobun (which is in olive green). Love it.
It's a great cheap knife that performs like a $100 knife.
I noticed GSM is now producing all the classic Cold Steel blades (like the Recon Tanto, Kobun, SRK, and Luzon) with new green handles now. I'm happy about it because I am bored with black knives.

Love my kobun, use it to skin squirrels tanto tip makes it easy to skin and gut, throws good sparks off my spark rod using the tip.
Like many others I first had issue with the handle, but I learned to handle it with light grip sorta like a conductor using a baton, and it is very fluid in my hands.
The guard is part of what holds it in the sheath.

    • @MattRoseKnives
      @MattRoseKnives  2 ปีที่แล้ว

That interesting that you use it for skinning, most people consider a tanto to not be ideal for that. But if it works for you, great! Yeah I've decided to go ahead and keep the guard on

That is the CRKT Mossback Hunter. And the clip on the Kobun is mainly intended for a boot but can be worn on a belt. Here in California it is also illegal to conceal such a knife. But you need to be prepared because this world is getting uglier. If an officer asks, just be truthful and they will be cool with you. I carry a TOPS C.U.T. 4.0 on my belt and COLDSTEEL Recon Tanto folder in my pocket. Both are easy to deploy. If I can’t run, then I will fight. No shame in running. Live to to fight another day. Just got the Recon Tanto in SK5. I like it so far. That one is for my SUV. Nice vids. Keep it up 👍🏾. Thanks 🙏🏾. Oh, almost forgot. The folder is before GSM acquisition. Love that folder.

I absolutely love Cold Steel, but maybe I should say that I did depending on how valid this concern is...but I have been seeing more and more folks complaining about these kinds of issues across the whole catalog....maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe their manufacturing and or QC isn't what it was before the sale of the company. I am guessing the latter based on my understanding that the plants that Lynn used to produce these knives are still the ones used now. I really hope the new owners don't let things slip too much, because if Cold Steel ended up like Schrade or Gerber, I would be inconsolable (not kidding) The day Lynn made the announcement on TH-cam, was a very sad one for me, but that just goes to show you how much I love the knives they make. Cheers.

I am hoping to buy a Recon Tanto in the next couple days, but now I've seen this one and I've got to ask... using for what it's designed for, do you feel like you're more likely to slide up onto the blade on the Kubon then you are on the Recon Tanto? I like that it's smaller and lighter but I'm afraid it'll cause slippage forward under heavy use cuz the guards on the front of the handle don't look that big... I've watched the manufacturer video on the Recon Tanto and they're stabbing the **** outta stuff without any hand slippage forward.

Hammer grip isn't always a grip for a fighting knife.
You use a thumb grip, where your thumb rests on a guard, hence guard on a "blunt" side is longer.
Other grip is a flat grip, where you hold your knife like for slicing left to right, not up and down...thumb resting on a wider part of your handle...

As you said, you're on the younger side. Take a look to the blade weapons used in the time when people fight and trust their lives on such blades, I mean, people who live their lives fighting, and see if you find any thick "hand filling " handle. There's a reason, if you get hit in your hand or knocked down and get kicked in your weapon hand, a thinner handle is preferred. Your hand closes more and is difficult to lose your weapon than with a thicker handle. This is a fighting knife, as you said.

Data point for you - I just got a new SK-5 Recon Tanto with what seems like the same problem with the tip grind, except worse by about 1-2mm in terms of how far down the spine the grind begins. I have a vernier protractor and could see that it's not just the grind depth but the angle that's different, which is a much harder problem to think about ever fixing DIY because it means just putting the high side on a flat stone wouldn't work and would wind up ruining the edge in the tip area. I'm trying to not worry about it because it won't have a functional impact, but at the same time my eyes keep going to it every time I hold the knife, so it might have to go back.

The clip design is terrible. When you draw the knife quickly the sheath comes out with it. The clip needs a hook or something to retain it in the boot / waistband when you draw the knife. I can't believe Cold Steel still hasn't fixed this. The old sheath design had a plastic clip which worked a lot better as it had a hook that retained the sheath in its position when you yanked the knife out of it. Much better for making quick draws.

@@MattRoseKnives well I didn't start off hating it I bought one LOL. The first one I bought was on sale at knifecenter for $19.99 and I thought g10 handles, sk5 Steel how could you go wrong for 20 bucks? Well the first one I got there was so much gap between the tang of the knife and the g10 handles that I could stick a toothpick in between them so the fit and finish on the first one was just awful I contacted crkt and they had really good customer service actually they even let me keep the defective knife and just sent me a new one which I think is awesome but the second one I got was even worse the blade was completely warped had a wave pattern to it. And one scale was bluer than the other by a noticeable margin and I know it's only a $25 $30 knife but I didn't expect it to be such a piece of crap. And the blade is so darn thin! I didn't even bother getting it replaced they're still just sitting in my drawer collecting rust. I was really disappointed because if one thing crkt was known for it was their fit and finish and having really cool designs and beautiful knives not always the best materials but pretty nonetheless

@@MattRoseKnives and a side note I own all three of these knives my Kobun and my 119 special are flawless and I love them both very much. Excellent budget knives! My Kobun has an uneven guard as well I guess it was intentional but the fit and finish on mine is stellar for $35 I love Cold Steel my best cold steel would have to be the AK-47 s35vn folder full size 3 1/2-in blade

@@brokeboytactical That's crazy man. The fit and finish on mine is really good actually. Fair enough fair enough! Sorry you had such a bad experience with the blade. But I have heard that CRKT customer service is great!

@@MattRoseKnives I went ahead and gave crkt another run for my money and I ordered the sting... I really wish I could post pictures on here so I can show you lmao. The grind on one side of my blade doesn't match up with the tip. Like at all! It's very noticable. Now don't get me wrong at least they agreed to pay for the shipping and let me send the knife back in and they're going to send me a new one. So I have to say my experience with their customer service is far better than the last time. Last time they practically accused me of breaking the knife due to negligence. It was the crkt shrill boot knife and I know ahead of a very fine tip very fine! But I don't think it should have broke while I was cleaning it sitting at my table... It literally fell 6 in onto a plastic picnic table and broke. But I digress, still really sick of buying knives that don't ever come the way they're supposed to! But once they send me one that's good this is going to be an awesome knife! I know it only has 1050 carbon steel but for a boot knife that's way more than adequate

The only thing wrong with the Kobun, is the sheath is crap. But I will fix that problem.
