  • These are the New, 2021. GSM, Cold Steel, Oyabun's, 26T & 32AA Limited, #110. I give my thoughts on them...
    Note:
    This is some info I found on 4034SS:
    Thyssen-Krupp 4034 Knife Steel
    The composition of 4034 SS. It's a European SS. It's equivalent is 420HC. According to the chemical composition and the HRC of the steel, the 425M has the following features:
    Edge Retention: with a maximum HRC of 54, it means that it does not have great edge retention
    Corrosion Resistance: the 4034 steel has a 14% of chromium, which gives the steel great corrosion resistance.
    Wear Resistance: 0.5% of carbon grants the 4034 stainless steel a decent wear resistance. But, it’s not good enough.
    Sharpness: It is low-end steel with a 54 HRC, its definitely easy to sharpen. But, will not hold a good edge very long.
    Toughness: 4034 steel lacks many materials that contribute to superior toughness, like Nickel. Therefore it has a decent toughness due to the Chromium in it.
    To me, this sounds like a SS to avoid... Peace, Stiletto :)

    Hi there, nice review but I must say I really like the budget Oyabun. In Europe it's 70 euro, that's about 75 US dollars. I use my Oyabun as a EDC cutter for light cutting jobs. It is well build and beautiful designed for a liner-lock folder. I like this Japanese style tanto blade. I love my Oyabun and I would say 'Go buy it, you won't regret it'. As for the Limited Version : The better knife for sure, but almost 300 euro, that's 320 US dollars !!! You see what I mean ? Greetings from Belgium.

    Thanks Stiletto-another great review, and you made my decision for me! I was not interested in the “budget” version before, and definitely not now. The Limited Edition-that is way too rich for my blood, especially with only a 3.5” tanto blade and liner lock. I will wait for the price drop, which is, actually, how I scored my Black Talon (original) over 10 years ago (original retail was $499 at the Cold Steel Custom shop, but then they went on clearance for $150-and I EDC’d it for years) and my Golden Eye Elite (which was originally listed at >$300 but I got it at CS clearance for about $115). Interesting concept for both knives, but not priced right for me yet. Thanks and have a good one!

      I do the same thing, too... I hate paying the the high prices for the first round... Often, instead, I will be patient. With the Limited Lynn C. Thompson Oyabun, I wanted a low number, to Collect. The 26T was the one I was going to put into rotation and use... But, when I saw how weak it's construction was, there was no way it was going into my rotation drawer... I was very disappointed with the Budget Oyabun... :-( Peace, Stiletto :-)

    Thanks for another great review. I cannot decide if I like the looks of this or not. I definitely do NOT like the price. At the time I wrote this Midway had it listed for $255. That's a LOT of money for a small S35VN folder with a liner lock. The cheap version looks really bad.

      The only one I would recommend is the Limited. The Budget Version, I cannot recommend. And, if the Limited wasn't a Collector, I wouldn't have purchased it; I agree, it's too costly... The reason why I decided to get it is because it's a Lynn C. Thompson "Signature" Collectable. And, who knows, it might be one of his last Signature Folders from Cold Steel... That's why I bought this one, to Collect, not use... But, I bought the Budget Model to try out and use. And, it was so flimsy, I don't want to even bother with it; I cannot recommend that one at all... :-( Peace, Stiletto :-)

      Absolutely, Nephew! Pass on the Budget Version, for sure... I would say it's the worst Cold Steel Folder I have ever purchased... :-( Well, that's not totally true... The Cold Steel Kudu and Eland aren't my favorites either... :-) But, they cost less than $10.00... And, I would trust them more than this one; at least their handles aren't flimsy... :-)
      I think I will stay away from "GSM" Cold Steel Budget Knives that are new "GSM" models... The Range Boss was a disappointment for me, too... It's sad, both, the Budget Oyabun Folder and the Range Boss could have been better, very easily. Old Cold Steel wouldn't have ever made these knives, flimsy and flexible, like these were made... Beware, Nephew... I am so glad I have my Old Cold Steels; I think they will be the best Cold Steels... :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

      @@Kris_Stiletto yeah uncle I watched your range boss video right after this one...man this sucks I had really high hopes for the GSM era 🤦🏼‍♂️ I’ve been trying to stock up on as many old cold steel knives as I can afford because I’m worried the prices will sky rocket....I really want to eventually (and with a loooooot more money 🤣) check out the newer fixed blades like the new 3v trail master or one of the other big fixed blades I’m curious to see the quality

    • @Kris_Stiletto
      @Kris_Stiletto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nephew, I would think the Fixed Blades, that were previously made, by the Original Cold Steel Company, will be the same quality, like the AD15, 4Max Scout, Ti-Light Kris, and Voyager Drop Point. All of those are excellent. But, they're Original Cold Steel Designs that have been tried, trued, and proven to be rock solid folding knife platforms. It might be the totally brand new designs from the new GSM CS Company that we should watch out for... I heard the new GSM CS Recon 1 is lacking, too...
      They, obviously, are not real "Bladesmen..." It's starting to look like they just care about quick money and not the product they're putting out. I know that sounds harsh, from me... But, I just don't know why in the World they would let these weak a__ knives out on the Market? What in the H___ were they thinking?
      GSM CS has me a little worried about the future of Cold Steel... They are starting to be like AMF was to Harley-Davidson, in the 1970's, when they bought Harley-Davidson and treated the American Icon like they didn't care about the Company and they went downhill and started manufacturing junk Harley's... :-( Peace, Stiletto :-)

    Is the lynn thompson edition liner lock a little bit thicker ? Or the same like the cheap version

    • @Kris_Stiletto
      @Kris_Stiletto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The liner thickness is about the same, which is pretty standard for like Liner-Lock folders. But, is it the same? No! The Limited has a properly tempered liner that appears to be either better finished or it is a better steel. The liner is perfectly finished with rounded edges and is fully polished. So, the quality is on a totally different level than the Budget Oyabun; they are two totally different knives, when talking about their construction.
      If the Budget Version was constructed like the Limited, you would hear me giving it praise... But, it's not... The Limited,is very nicely made. And, makes a great Collectible. Especially, considering, this might be the last of the Lynn C. Thompson Signature Series Collector's Edition Folders... :-) To me, that's the reason to buy one...
      If you just need a great self-defense tool. I would purchase the CS Recon 1 Tanto, CS Tanto or Barong (Drop Point) Voyager, CS SR1 Lite Tanto, CS Air-Lite Tanto, or even the CS Code 4 Tanto Folders over the CS Limited. For me, the Limited is for Collecting... Peace, Stiletto :-)

  • @BladesRKing

    They made 3500 of the limited. I had one on pre order at Knife Center since March. I canceled it just last week...the price of $255 just seemed too much even for a collectible. The value of the limited would have to come WAY up to make any profit down the road, and if I’m not going to use it but just let it sit in a safe, I would rather have my $255 instead. But that’s just me.

    • @Kris_Stiletto
      @Kris_Stiletto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on, Bro. Myself, I wanted the Limited. I couldn't wait for it to hit the Online Stores. But, I do wish they would have made it with Cold Steel's Folded Leaf-Spring Liner-Lock. And, I wish it would have been at least a 4" Blade.
      This may be the last of the Collectable, Signature Folders from Lynn C. Thompson... So, to me, it's a must have, for my Cold Steel Collection. I never planned on using it for anything other Collecting purposes.
      I know it's a Liner-Lock Folder with a Liner-Lock Safety, that is easy to use... To me, based on the desire to make it look like a Master Tanto, perhaps, they should have brought back their version of the Axis-Lock (yes, CS used to make a Cross-Bar Lock) and added a Flipper to it, with these beautifully polished 6061 Aluminium Handles with American G-10 Scales... That would have been my new favorite...
      GSM CS needs to listen to their Cold Steel Fans and step up their game... If they need help with their folding fighter designs, they should contact me; I have lots of ideas on how to improve the one's I have recently tried out, the Range Boss and 26T Oyabun... And, they need to keep making Recons with great materials, too... :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

  • @RedShiftedDollar
    @RedShiftedDollar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I really like the idea of a folding Master Tanto and the LCT version is really close, except the Master Tanto has a 6 inch blade. 3.5 is too small. With folders the handle has to be bigger than the blade so the same proportions aren’t possible, but I still think they should have gone bigger. Maybe they are saving that for the Magnum Tanto II folder...

    • @Kris_Stiletto
      @Kris_Stiletto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In hand, both feel awesome. But, the only one I would like them to continue making is the Limited... That one is sweet! The other... :-(
      I totally agree with you on the size. When CS made, both, the fixed blade Oyabun (Yakuza Boss) and Kobun (Yakuza Soldier), they made the Oyabun in two sizes, 7.5" and 9" Blades, like a Yakuza Boss should be... The Kobun had a 5.5" Blade.
      Based on that, I feel the Oyabun should have been an XL, or at least a Large Folder, with at least a 4" to 4.5" Blade. Then, they should have made a Kobun Folder with a 3.5" to 4" Blade; that would have been real cool, in my opinion...
      Because of that, I started to not get the Collector; I thought it should be bigger... But, I changed my mind; I am glad I did. It'll make a great addition to my Collection; it's beautiful like, the Old Custom Line, Cold Steel used to make back in the day.
      Though, they need to scrap the Budget Version and re-make another Budget Version. And, construct it the same way as the Limited, with less expensive materials and finishes to keep the cost down. If they do that, I will get and use that one... :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

    • @RedShiftedDollar
      @RedShiftedDollar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kris_Stiletto Thanks for the detailed reply! I agree 100%.
      I think the budget Oyabun would have been better styled like the Kobun. Then the smaller blade makes more sense as the budget folder. Take away the bolsters and make the handle all black. Keep it simple with the small cheap one.
      Then the LT Signature one should have been styled exactly like it is, like the master tanto, except make it bigger and give it a san mai blade. San mai would have been sweet!
      There are a lot of neat things CS can do with this folding tanto theme.
      They also need a version of the triad lock that doesn't take up as much space. Then they could build it into the ti-lite and compact folders like the Oyabun. Tri-ad folders can't fold down the full 180 degrees because of the lock.

    • @Kris_Stiletto
      @Kris_Stiletto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome ideas, Bro! I, too, love this Folder's Style and looks. Both, look cool. But, the Budget Version needs work... Yes, a full length, Black, American G-10 Handle Scales with "Heat Treated" SS Liners and Folded Leaf-Spring would do it, I think... :-) Oh, and I absolutely luv the VG-10 San Mai, idea... YES!!! :-)
      And, I don't think that it wouldn't be too hard for them to make that change, too... If I worked for GSM CS I would never let "Junk" out onto the Market. The same goes for the Range Boss, give it back American G-10 and a better SS, like AUS-10A and they would have a "Winner!" It's not Brain Surgery... I don't get why they don't get that?
      I hope they listen to us and don't continue to make Janky and Junky Folders that aren't any better than the cheap stuff that Master Cutlery makes in China; that's the worse Knife Manufacturer I know of. They sell stuff that looks good. But, is actually "Junk!" Much like the Budget Oyabun... :-( Peace, Stiletto :-)

    Wow, the flex on the standard version is horrible! Reminds me of the SOG Pent Arc. It had similar levels of flex and although it would function as a knife I had to return it just because I also hate the idea of a bendable knife. My Oyabun limited should be arriving tomorrow and I'm glad I went for the premium version.

      What's so sad, to me, is I was hoping it would be a real cool Folder. Even though, it was a Liner-Lock, I was going to give GSM CS the benefit of the doubt and try them out. I love the Master Tanto Style, on the Budget Model; it looks real good, "Online," at Home, on your Computer... And, it even feels real good, in hand, due to the Kray-Ex Grip and the shape of the Handle. But, as soon as you hold the Handle tight, you feel it give way to you grip's pressure...
      Personally, I don't think they used good SS, for the Liners, and most likely, didn't heat treat them, either... The Liners are super weak and flimsy... That's why I couldn't recommend it; it's very poorly constructed, in my opinion. There are a ton of Folders, in this price range, that I would recommend over this one. To me, this one is about the same quality as a Master Cutlery Folder from China. I was very disappointed with the affordable Oyabun...
      The Limited, on the other hand, is beautiful. And, is constructed like the Old Custom Series of Cold Steel Folders, from the past. That one I like. If they remake the Budget Version like the Limited, I will give it another chance and try one out. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

    I don't like when Cold Steel makes a linerlock. Linerlocks, framelocks and the everything that is build to work in a similar fashion like the Spyderco Compression lock are the locks I like the least. They are not only weak but they also wear very quickly. Some people are happy when Cold Steel do different locks because they think we now have more variety but what actually happens is that we end up with less variety. Think about it. If we want a linerlock we can buy from thousands other companies. The Tri-Ad we can buy only from Cold Steel so I wanna see Tri-Ads from Cold Steel. Moreover the manual button lock is much better if any company wanna make a smooth flipper. I would favor the Range Boss over the budget one you showed by a large margin.

      Yep... It's not a nice one... It looks good Online. But, once you see how weak the handles are, if you're like me, that will totally turn you off... As soon as I saw how poorly this one was constructed, I tried to let everyone know, what I experienced with my purchase and how disappointed I was with this folder. I knew a lot of us were interested in the Budget Oyabun. Man, did GSM CS miss the Boat on this one; it could have been "Great!" :-( Peace, Stiletto :-)

    The fact that the benchmade bug out is over a hundred dollars and the Handles flex worse than the
    oyabun

      I haven't owned a Bugout. But, I know, at least, with those you can purchase nice Scale Kits to make them really nice.
      But, the Budget Oyabun doesn't have any way to improve it...
      Very true. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

    I flexy handle is NOT a sexy handle. I first discovered I hated this phenomenon when I bought the first version of the Benchmade Bugout.

      Amen, Brother! I don't want a Folder with a flexible handle; to me, their "JUNK!" I totally agree, Bro. I am glad I was able to show you Guys this, while these are still new and before lots of you purchased these...
      The Limited is nicely built. But, the Budget Oyabun is crap... :-( And, to me, that's very sad. I know the Old, Lynn C. Thompson and Andrew Demko Cold Steel would have never allowed this Budget Oyabun to ever be made so weakly and flimsy...
      It could have been a great one, if they would've constructed the handle, like they did the Limited. And, then, give it the Ti-Lite Series, thick and heat treated SS liners and folded over leaf-spring. Then, it would have been a "Rock Star!" But, instead they chose to go the super cheap junk route and over charge us for it...
      Doesn't GSM CS realize Cold Steel Folding Knife Lovers are used to getting a lot of bang for our bucks? And, we do not like any poorly made and overpriced weak folders... Cold Steel Fans know the difference between a Strong Folder and a piece of weak a__ junk...
      I don't think GSM CS is taking it's Customers seriously, like the Old Cold Steel Company did... They must think we don't know the difference, between good and bad folders... And, if they do, why did they release this one to us? Didn't they know we wouldn't like it?
      I hope they listen to us and do not make anymore Janky and Junky Folders for us... If this is the road they want to go down, I will take my business elsewhere; I don't like Wannabe Janky and Junky Folders...
      They need to be strength testing their folders, before they decide to release them to the Public... That's what the "Old" CS would've done... :-( Peace, Stiletto :-)

      @@Kris_Stiletto - I think they are testing how far they can push the customer base, or they want to see how many cheapo-versions they sell against the custom versions. If they sell a lot of the customs then they know we appreciate quality but also that we will pay a premium price. To me, it’s a lose lose if I buy either of these. I liked Cold Steel because of the value I got for my money. I spent pretty decent money, and get a pretty decent folder...nothing fancy, necessarily, but sturdy, reliable, and sharp.
      I agree that they also need to stress test their products. We need more of that, for sure, because I doubt the cheaper oyabun would have passed any of the old stress tests.

      Absolutely, Brother... This, Budget, Oyabun, I'll bet, cannot hold a 100 pounds without deforming... I wouldn't trust it for anything. It reminds me of the super cheap Master Cutlery Folders, from China...
      I am so glad I have purchased all of my favorite Cold Steel Folders and Fixed Blades. I just hope the Talwar and Hold Out are the same quality as the old one's. And, I think they will be. After all, they did do an excellent job on the 4Max Scout, AD15 Lite, Drop Point Voyager, and Ti-Lite Kris. So, I haven't lost all hope, yet... Peace, Stiletto :-)

    Cold Steel has gone down hill.

      Their Company Mission has changed. Instead of giving us the biggest bang for our buck... Their new Mission is all about making the most they can for their Share Holders... We aren't their priority anymore... And, in my opinion, if they stay with that, they will loose their Fans and Loyal Customer Base... :-( Peace, Stiletto :-)

    I don’t particularly care for the aluminum bolsters. I have seen how highly scratched these end up getting from seeing my friend’s Large Espada Custom and other large/XL Espada Customs online.
    It’s the main reason why I only own the G-10 versions of these knives, and not the custom. I would’ve spent the money on it if I knew the finish would hold up. My G-10 Espadas look new still even after moderate pocket time and use.

      Yes! I totally agree, when it comes to actually carrying folders for EDC. I prefer American G-10 Handles or Scales, too. Pretty much for the exact same reason. And, also, they're heavier, too... Though, if you know how to buff aluminum, it's real easy to buff out scuffs.
      Myself, I like both. But, for different reasons. I like the flashy Custom Models for Collecting. I have a ton of Old American Folders with Nickel Silver Bolsters and Natural Bone Handles; I think they are beautiful.
      I am not one that needs to carry every folder I own or Collect... But, the one's I do carry and use, if I can have them my way, they would be all blacked out with American G-10, CF-Elite, Carbon Fiber, Micarta, or a really well done Grivory, Zytel, or Glass Reinforced Nylon, Titanium, and 7075 or 6061 Heat Treated and Coated Aluminum. SS can be nice too. But, often makes folding knives too heavy... :-) My personal favorite Handles and Scales are G-10 and Micarta for folders I carry and use daily. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

    I don't know man I was excited about the limited version when it first came out, but after seeing your video I am a little disappointed. The liner lock looks thin on both models. Even just as a collector piece, it's just not singing to me. They could have done a better job on both models or hey, maybe it's just not for me. I hope other people enjoy them.

    • @Kris_Stiletto

      Yes, they should've done better. Especially, with the Budget Model... That one is not made like a Cold Steel Knife should be made; I was totally disappointed in that one... I am just used to Cold Steel Folders being light weight and super strong; those are the Cold Steel Folders I like the best... The Budget Model Oyabun does not fit that mold... :-( I feel they, GSM CS, really missed the Boat on this one... :-(
      I have tried out lots of knives, in the Budget Category, by many different Manufacturers. And, this one is the worst, of all of the folders I have tried, at this price. I like the Range Boss more than this one; it, at least, I feel is a durable folder. This one doesn't even feel like a durable folder; it's flimsy... The only part that looks strong is the blade... They, totally, missed the Boat on this one... :-(
      But, I like the Limited; that one is sweet. True, the Liner-Lock, on the Limited, isn't thick. But, it looks strong. It's polished and well constructed. And, appears to be well tempered, unlike the Budget Model. It looks totally different than the Liner-Lock on the Budget Model.
      In fact, the entire folder looks absolutely beautiful. It would make a great "Gentleman's" Folder; it's very classy looking and feels perfect in hand. I just wish the blade was an inch longer... This one, with a S.O.G. style XR-Lock, with Flipper, would be a perfect Folding Oyabun Tanto, in my opinion... :-) Thanks for watching, Bro! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
