Treatment for Nerve Pain

- Nerve pain is a result of a breakdown in the “pain sensors” in the body. Generally speaking, nerve pain is when a normal everyday stimulus is inappropriately perceived by the brain to be a “danger”. This can create unexplained discomfort that can wreak havoc on someone’s life. Desensitization strategies is a way to introduce stimuli (in a gradual manner) to the body in an effort to train the nervous system to react appropriately. In this video, I will teach you how to “retrain” the nervous system.

After a lifetime of good health I have had several chronic illness in the last few years. I’ve seen several dozen doctors and spent countless hours of time and money. All of my problems have improved or healed by watching TH-cam videos.
I'm just amazed at the level of your education. When I was in rehab my therapist never spoke to me about these things.
Thanks for watching Fred! I think part of it is we (therapists) sometimes take for granted what we know (and what our patients may not know). Additionally, having this platform has given me the rare opportunity to just talk without interruption. That means I can cover a lot of topics 😊
The knowledge you have surpasses all the physiotherapist I have encountered.
Hi Tamara. I appreciate that 😊 I hope it is helping you to get to the next level in your rehab journey :)
@@rehabhqofficial yes they are help and I try to help others by tell them about your page.

Dr. Tara I feel like you were talking directly to me regarding nerve pain and desensitizing. I’m 7 years post and the nerve pain has been ramping up over the past two years and it’s at its worst right now. I will definitely utilize what was explained in the video and hope for the best. Thank you!
How are you doing now?
My nerve pain scares me because it came out of nowhere once I started to heavy plaque detox!! It worry’s me it hurts and it’s so annoying because your mind is on it everyday
Could you tell more about your pain?
@@mraa4950 the pain is constant .. throbbing, sharp with the feeling of electric shocks from time to time and it hasn’t stopped. It only affects the side damaged by stroke and the medications I have tried and taken so far have failed. Still searching for answers but to no avail as of yet.
Thank you for this video. After a stroke my neurologist put me on valium and I became a junk. After stopping cold turkey I got neurological pain (the paralyzed side, now in training), one sided. The pain gets worse in the evening and hinders sleeping. I only use food supplements like PEA etc. Will try the massage and cold and warm shower. Blessings from Holland.
Hello, Dr Tara
I’m 29 and I’m really happy I found your video. I was just told a little over a week ago that I had a lesion on my brain. I was then admitted into the emergency room, then the icu then to neurology room for more observation. Thank God my lesion is begin. However, they try to say my “events” like getting faint, couldn’t hold my head up ,going in and out of unconsciousness was all in my head. Like anxiety and mental health. But I honestly don’t believe that. I feel like I’ve been having bad nerve pains. I original thought it was like pinched nerve.
However I get these sharp electric shock feeling when I try to sleep and I’m losing sleep because it also wakes me out of my sleep. I am getting in
These sharp pains in my feet from time to time and numbness too here and there and everything comes in waves. I will be seeing a psychiatrist. But all I’ve been doing is taking Tylenol for the pain.
I feel for the people in this comment section I can’t imagine dealing with this for years… I’m only on my third week with this it’s miserable and scary it feels like you are losing your ability to control parts of your body. For me it’s like I çan almost feel my body sending out those signals but maybe it’s not getting there fully?
Oddly enough I’ve done a lot of these exercises on my own. I just wanted to test my sensitivity to different objects and I also do the hot and cold showers on a regular basis I don’t like super hot showers. I tend to take cooler showers or like warm but yes I did it back and forth. Ive touched and massages around my feet and legs with different objects I haven’t done the vibrations one though. But I honestly can’t pinpoint mine.
Thank you for reading I know it was long.
Hi just come across and it's exactly what I was looking for. Can you say how long each session of desensitization should be, how many times a day, when to progress to the next level etc?
I’m amazed at your intelligence . I’m so so thankful to you . I follow your exercise s and see considerable improvement in my hip
Movement . Send you blessings everyday
I am so glad to know that these videos are helping you. This is truly why I do what I do. Comments like this make it all worth it 😊
My mother had a stroke July 2020, then seizures started April 2021, now shes experiencing severe numbness on the right side which was affected after atroke but rehab seemed to work now its like she's having a worse time. Like she just lies in bed now. I'm going to try these tips and pray it works
These videos are tremendously helpful. Thank you so much for making them! My only request is that you number them or give the full title instead of “the video I made last week,” so that they are easier to find. (I've left this comment on the three most recent videos.)
I know 😉 In most cases if I reference a video it is in the description below the video or you can always go to the video tab and find all the videos in chronologic order for the day that they were published (so if I say "last week" in most cases it will be the one the week before the one you are currently watching). I hope that helps!
Hard to find a smart Physiothrepist like you specially who has mastery in neurological issues . .
Thank you very much, from South Africa.
Tried a bit of those suggestions and already feels helpful, as am healing in suprapubic and groin area.
The new thing I learnt was about desensitization, brilliant.
Thank you to the lady and all at Rehab Q.
Great video - Thank You for taking all time that you did in making this video!
I have hip pain that goes into my groin & such.I was sent n ortho last week for him to check my hip out....
Since that appt I’ve been in unbearable pain as the ortho began pulling on my legs by my ankles!
I’ve tried a couple of things you have in this video. The sensation that these things create are comforting - on my skin - while I’m doing those things but the pain is just so out of control right now I’m not sure what else I can do?
Do you have any other suggestions? I apologize for such a long post! Thank You!
You need to get x-rays and a MRI to narrow down what your issue is. I had the same pain and thought I had a bad hip or an injured SI joint, but it turns out I don't have any SI joint issues or a bad hip. My x-rays and MRI came out clear for any real issues related to my bones or joints. My orthopedic sent me to a neurologist because there was a tarlov cyst found in my MRI. So make sure your doctor is checking for everything. :)
Your awesome thank you so much for taking your time for everyone having these problems. You are greatly appreciated and heaven sent. ❤
Super Video again, Dr. Tara, so much educated insight. 💛💛 Two months after stroke my arm spastics kicked in and I was not able to get the arm straight. It remained at 90 degrees and stretching was super painful. Step by step over 5 months with daily stretching I got it straight again, but only with 4-5 times a day stretching. I used some of your techniques for relaxing like a warm rice/sand bath, warm and cold water baths, gently stroking the arm with a towel and what we call the hot roll. ⭐⭐
Nina, I am so happy to read this! Wow, that is 100% dedication on your part. I hope other read this and see that they are not going to hurt forever. Thank you so much for sharing this hopeful story!!

I have TN from a severe head trauma. I have been on meds 20 years & have a motor cortex brain stimulator to try to cut it down a bit. My arteries & nerves are tangled in my head. The pain was unbearable. I almost could not survive the pain it was very close. I was moved by my family to AZ away from them but it has saved my life. I’m still in pain but not as often or as severe. I wish so much it could end & I could be off these heavy meds.
How did they find the arteries and nerves tangled? Mri? With or without contrast?
Hi Dr. Tara, I'm experiencing nerve right now, on my left lower head. This cause of Shingles . It's almost 7 months now. What kind of excercise must I do please help me. I am from Philippines thank you so much in advance. Am 74 yrs old. God bless you for your help. 🙏✝️
I do not have the feeling of pain as you described, but after more intense leg exercise or longer walking I have a feeling of arm and shoulder fatigue, the same is true in the opposite case after arm exercise, a feeling of heaviness and fatigue in the leg. The most effective after a light massage is lying down - stretch out and after 10-15 minutes it disappears, I think the sympathetic system resects. Thank you so much
Sounds like lack o Thiamine.
@@52nenne Thank you very much, I will check with dr
I had that kind of fatigue type pain for about a year…..turned out to be Claudication,..from blockages in my arteries in various places. Please get checked out. My cholesterol was PERFECT…No issue there so when they said I had a blockage, I was shocked. I had a clot in my foot that ended up costing me my big toe(amputated). Explain exactly how your pain happens and when. My upper thighs would stop me in my tracks after walking about a 1/2 city block. They would hurt terribly with a burning like you get after exercise. Turned out to be Peripheral Artery disease.
I have chronic nerve and musculoskeletal pain also…😖, a separate issue.
Maybe I didn't express myself well, I don't speak English well. It is not pain but a feeling of fatigue in the muscles, the doctor says that this is a common reaction due to weakness in the affected muscles due to a stroke. With daily exercise it disappears. I'm sorry you're having the difficulties mentioned. Your problems are not related to cholesterol but to homocysteine, let the doctor explain it to you because it's a long story. Regards
I feel the same these days. My cervical area feel tired and burdened. Ithe urge of having it massaged is real. Similarly, I feel pricks in my feet when I bend forward and dull pain of about 1% when I exercise my left arm. The discomfort goes away as you said.

Dear Dr. Tara, I enjoy an appreciate your videos. they are helpful. Just a small correction to your comment on choice of Doctors in Canada. We can choose pretty well any type of medical specialist that we think can help us. Usually we "get there" through our family GP, who acts a a bit of a gatekeeper to insure that we are simply beating the bushes, and wasting the time of the specialists. I do have a Thalamic stroke and have easy access to several Neurologists, a Cardiologist , etc ..

After a stomach surgery in 2018, I started feeling this nerve pain on my toes
I am in so much pain. I had a fossa meningioma removed from my left posterior skull area. Upon dismissal from the hospital I began experiencing a extreme burning prickly shooting pain in my under arm breast area on my right side. I don’t know what this could be but the pain is unbearable. I had so muscle relaxers that my neurologist prescribed me and this is the only thing that helps me through the pain. It hurts to wear a bra cup or even for my shirt to touch the area on this side.

Doctors in US are the worst in the world. Doctors in us have told me that I’m going to live only 6 months if I’m not going to get the treatment they recommended me… then I went to Europe to an third world country and doctors there told me: you are not going to die and you don’t need that therapy that US doctors suggested me. I chose to believe doctors in Europe and it’s been 7 years and I’m still alive. When you go to doctors office in Europe, first they take care of you and help you. Doctors in US first they ask you for medical insurance or if you don’t have it they ask you for your card…if you don’t have one of them; you will die.

@@Triniflowers1010 Its a super itchy patch on my mid back (constant itch), left side. It is discoloured too, almost looks like a bruise. And nothing topical helped to get rid of it. I finally went to a dermatologist who suffered from the same thing, and so she knew right away when she saw it.
