i had a right sidehemorrhagic stroke Nov12,2021. I had to relearn how to swallow, speak, walk and focus my eyesight on my left side. I am more fit since my stroke. I lost 105 pounds, my blood pressure and diabetes are controled. I run 3 miles a day albeit a very slow 3 miles, I ride my bike every so often and have been doing resistance bands every day and my muscles are popping like when I was a 16 year old teenager. I can honestly say that my stroke was the best thing that ever happened to me. I am more healthy today and my views on life and whats truly important has changed! Never give up!

I am currently sitting in the ICU from a mild hemorrhagic stroke, right side. At at the onset I had R-side hemiplegia and aphasia. My symptoms resolved within 5 minutes and got my ass to the ER within one hour. It was scary as hell and I wouldn’t wish this event on anyone. My stroke was mild. Day 3 and just some slight memory issues. I am blessed. Anyone who is suffering from a stroke my heart and prayers are with you and keep fighting and rehabbing. Bless you all

I had read a lot of your comment after watching the video. I am 9 years since my stroke. I have had lots of thearpy in the 1st 2 years but could not afford any more thearpy for a few years as time went on. So I started to work out in the gym and still do which helps a lot. I suggest you get your balance stabilize as much as you can to feel confident in using some of the equipment to not feeling like you are going to fall. I also do an overabundance of brain activity like Luminosity, puzzles, reading, etc. Dr. you are right...reputation is definitely key for both sides of the body and demands the affected sides participate. my motto is: if you are breathing you got to move. NEVER GIVE UP.

She is absolutely correct, recovery will only occur if you make "you" do it, yes its hard, yes it makes you angry for the problems you did not have before but you can get your brain to rewire if you "make it" do what you want, not take a compensation route out of the problem, it worked for me and some of us wont be so lucky !!

Does your local community college offer assisted gym classes? Or do you live near a college/university that has PT/OT/ST students who need people to practice on/with?
Are you in a stroke survivor support group? If local, then they can often point to more resources and options aside from what's available on TH-cam.

Thanks dr. T. Five year post-stroke. Most of my improvement(meaningful) was after first year. Meaningful, because first clinic was just interested in money. Once, i took ownership of my recovery. I improved quite a bit. I have recovered enough to walk slowly without a cane, even in public. My research tells me that BDNF helps you expedite neuroplasticity, which is produced by brain to relearn new things, is produced when you do cardio. Which can be a challenge for stroke patient. So, I used stepper bike to be safe. Well, my experience tells me there's no permanent plateau. You keep learning new things all your life. You can augment your neuroplasticity by attempting to learn nonphysical skill, like learning a new language.

    • @rehabhqofficial
      @rehabhqofficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I absolutely agree with everything in your comment!! As far as I know BDNF is something they can test for to assess what is going on in the brain. Ie: more BDNF = more neuroplasticity (simplified). Anyway, about the plateau.....I am a firm believer (after 20 years of working with a variety of (personality) types of stroke patients) that a plateau only happens when you mentally give up. So, keep putting in the work and you will keep seeing progress even if it seems small/slow at times. Anyway, thanks for watching and for leaving such a informative, thoughtful comment. :)

@@scousescooter all I can say is-dont give up. My hand did not return even after five years, but I didn't let it go into contracture. And, that is a great accomplishment on it's own. Now I can place my hand anywhere means my shoulder and elbow are strong enough. I was told it's all about re-routing the pathways because those synergistic pathways became too strong. I'm still doing FES and some splints. I wouldn't give up. Hand recovery is from proximal to distal. Good luck! Never give up us my motto.

Wow, what an incredible BLESSING you are!!! I like how speak with a hopeful determination in your voice, I would really call it a type of conviction almost, I can tell you wholeheartedly believe what are advising!
I almost teared up (takes a lot for me..lol) 2 years ago I had 2 Ischemic strokes back to back, 2 brain bleeds , & a I had an aneurysm rupture in my head as well as according to my medical records shown I was believed to be having a myocardial infarction(Heart Attack) upon arrival to the hospital, all at the same time, all due to untreated High Blood Pressure.
I was a Realtor at the time & had no insurance, my friends had tried for 2 days to take me to the hospital & unfortunately I fought with them as I thought I just “felt bad” was all & couldn’t justify an expensive hospital visit.
I really have made an incredible recovery, Thank You God!)
But I often have a lot of regret bcz if i would have gotten there sooner I really think mentally , would be further along. I have not had even one therapy session because my family did not want to spend the money on it.
But I heard one of my doctors tell my family that if I would start walking that would be a free & great therapy for me.
Well that was it for me, the hospital had given me a very nice walker the day before, I somehow made my mind up, as soon as I could ,I would stop using it and WALK! That I did, I had some pretty falls but I would say within a few days I had stopped using it & within a few months ii was walking a few miles a day, I am convinced if I had still used that shiny new walker, shower chair etc that I would not be where I am today.
In a few months I will graduate from college as an X-Ray Tech, honest to Hod the 1st few month I would just sit there in class, lost, as they would talk about Quantum Physics etc & eggs had to repeat a few classes but today, I am immensely thankful that went down the road that I did!
I really do believe that walking (cardio) is pristine for a free therapy because it gets oxygen to the brain, as your patients or followers are able to do so.
I get so frustrated with myself at times bcz it often takes me a little while to express myself in a thought (was a public speaker before this (associate pastor) and how I so wish I could have had occupational therapy etc.
It is what it is & I am just so thankful I am alive & I know once I can go back to work, I can start therapy etc. I had been told that I only had 2 years to recover, but I believe bcz I put the demand in my brain & commanded it to learn again as far as my studies as well as The Lord touching me is my I an where I am today.
I am trying to be more social abs force myself to join in conversations more & more, even tho at 1st it was embarrassing because I could read the facial perplexities on others in the groups as to “why I had having a hard time getting my thoughts out, lol.
But I want to encourage EVERYONE just to continue trying, I sincerely believe it’s that demand or commanding our brains to not stop & generating the neuro plasticity that you had mentioned, it really does work!
I am praying for all of those who are struggling today, YOU CAN & WILL make it back it just do NOT STOP TRYING!! 😁👍🏻🙏

Thanks a lot for your very informative Vedios. You will be pleased to know that your therapy and exercises are giving wonderfully positive results even after twelve years of brain stroke.I am a lawyer aged 53 from India. I suffered from a stroke and my right side was paralysed in 2008. I did approx 7 to 8 hours physio Therapy and exercises for first two years and again started my law practice, successfully. I had achieved almost 90% recovery in hand and leg . I can walk with a little limp for five kilometres. In the hand i have difficulty in fine movements. Since last 12 years i have continued physio Therapy for five days a week. But because of lockdown I was unable to go to the physio therapist and the courts are also closed. Luckily I saw your vedio for the first time on 31st March . And I watched all your vedios and started following your suggestions and exercises for Atleast 2-3 hours a day . And I am very happy to let you know that for the first time in 12 years I could feel heal-strike in my walk yesterday ( only for few steps). Still I cannot get body weight on the heal but this is definitely a massive improvement as my ultimate aim is to achieve 100% recovery. The end conclusion is that Brain does respond even after 12 years of stroke, if your muscles are not vested. Thanks once again and please continue posting vedios s👍🙏🏻

Orlando Neuro Therapy Thanks Dr Tara for a positive response/reply. I genuinely appreciate your selfless service to the world community. The effects of your vedios is priceless / very precious for people. My only request is to post some vedio on how to attain recovery of last 10%. When a person is walking independently but still has a 15% foot drop where he can’t have a heal strike and in hands lacking in fine movements only. Is it advisable for me to use a splint / braces for heal strike ? Again thanks a lot for your invaluable services to the entire global society.

Had a stroke on 4-1-22 and couldn't move right side of body for two days. I used visualization techniques and was able to stand by the 3rd day. I began doing everything I was doing before the stroke and even though I was clumsy or limping with lost coordination I kept pushing it. Today is 4-11-22 and I am typing this message with BOTH hands, climbing stairs, and walking fairly good, showering, brushing teeth as normal, combing hair with right hand, eating and drinking with right hand, and everything else I was doing before stroke. The key is to do your best to get back in the groove without changing anything. Positive neuroplasticity is key! Also, I had an ischemic infarction of the left lobe internal capsule and only lasted a few seconds. I've been taking several supplements to help with brain injury as well. I am very fortunate! Lastly, I am 57 years of age and stroke doesn't run in my family. I don't drink, don't smoke, I exercise daily, my blood pressure on the morning of stroke was 109/69. I don't have diabetes and they ran countless tests of heart and arteries and everything is perfect. I have 0% plaque in arteries. My cholesterol was 169, triglycerides 59, LDL, 103, and HDL 47. My CRP is 0.6, my homocysteine is 6.6, and all my clotting factors were optimal. Only thing is I had COVID in June 2020 and Omicron in Jan 2022. Docs think my previous COVID infection is to blame. Scary for sure....

Hi had stroke and brain bleed some time ago . Dr’s said it broke by my eyes . Instead of going inside the brain it went over and broke by the eyes. Trying real hard to be positive . It left damage to the left side , numbing , weakness. Am really sorry for having stroke and brain bleed , had to learn how to walk and speak again . All the words run into each other in the brain if I don’t speak fast enough , and I don’t ,so that’s very frustrating , as well as confusing to whom I’m trying to talk to . Under doctors care , and thankful cause the dr.’s said I’m walking out , most who have what I had , don’t walk out . Taking each day , one day at a time, and hoping for the best for myself as well as all those who have hurdles to get over dealing with stroke . You’re not alone if I could , I would hold your hand , and we would get better together…….

🧡🌸🧡 Dr. Tara, you are right, there is constant improvement especially if you constantly demand new (also small) steps and abilities from the body. AND they are building on each other. No free walking without first manifesting the feeling for balance through lots of free standing. No reaching up to the head without stretching away that elbow spastic etc. There are many themes that I teach my brain now 20 months into the stroke that were unthinkable 10 months ago. So you are 100 percent right 💝😃💝

Oh my gosh Nina. Dumb youtube did not show me your comment. :) (mind you, I look forward to sunshine happy). I am so mad. Anyway, just now seeing it. 😊I love every word of it!! You are spot on. Hardest part is staying motivated and I think you have that down. :)

    • @Nina_2288
      @Nina_2288 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yeah, staying motivated is the key. There were many setbacks, like losing balance last Nov and Dec, like falling and breaking a foot bone a year ago... it is a rocky road. But then it's good to take steps back and just practice free standing, deep breathing, taking red light and Vitamin D... and then there are jumps in development again. The body has it's own rules and it is best to respect this and go with the flow. Constant stretching and practice in the end absolutely pays off. 🌸👍🌸

wow i just wrote such a eloquent and detailed comment explaining my reasoning for asking but the mobile youtube app deleted my entire comment while i was trying to prevent the video from ending and starting to play another video on another page… sooo annoying!!! please fix this problem this is NOT the first time this has happened! lol
but anyways i was curious to know if the stroke victims in the medical field that had the stroke occur during the last 3 years, were they/you vaccinated beforehand? i have no secret intent or motives for this question just genuine curiosity . i know it was a requirement for all medical personnel to be vaccinated from the very beginning, for everyone’s safety (especially there’s since they have been quite literally at the front line of all of this) just trying to see if they had the stroke before or after the vaccination or if there was no connection what so ever to the date in which the stroke occurred ??
my father had a major stroke in 2011 at 52 in peak physical condition, incredibly gifted musician, award winning high school teacher of the year for multiple years, was my only lovable supporter/parent/role model (i’m an only child) my best friend, my number 1 fan , incredibly talented and gifted at just about everything he touched, was raised in an indiana state home for children since age 5, yet managed to be break all prior records and was awarded full ride scholarship for basketball, was prom king and voted most handsome and likely to become rich and famous. he was a pivotal role in many underprivileged, ignored and seemingly hopeless at risk youths in his high school class where he taught english and would perform at the school auditorium in front of the entire school with his guitar and would sing his own written, produced and performed songs to standing ovations ! had many of these kids personally tell me how much he changed their lives at such an important year (15 ) how it was him who encouraged them to learn and stay in school, that they were worth something. he went to the gym every other day and ran 3 miles on the days he didn’t , religiously! for my entire life! was the epitome of peak physical condition and was the belief that he would “live till 100” . unknown to my mother, father and myself, he had an undiagnosed heart defect that had left him with a hole in his heart from birth (his mother was institutionalized for mental illness and was heavily medicated while pregnant with him since he was the baby of the family aka her last child & i’d assume since she was admitted during her pregnancy and never ended up leaving that hospital till the day she died) assume the powerful antipsychotic medications were the cause of the defect but never any actual answer. doctors never diagnosed nor had any idea of any said “defect” and my father was the type to never see a doctor EVER and we all felt why would he need to since he was the epitome of HEALTH!
how far offf and how wrong we were, a life lesson i’ll never forget (yet don’t seem to follow myself tbh ) you never know what your body is doing inside and what could or could not be normal and be a potentially fatal flaw that would set off something as strong as an ischemic stroke, right as he was walking into the gym. they said that the hole caused plaque to get through and that’s what caused the stroke.
my dad went from being the greatest, the most handsome, talented, charismatic, charming , inspirational, loving, most intelligent person i’d ever know, my literal hero. to put it shortly ( and i’m obviously not good at doing so because of the vast amount of facts and details that are involved in my story that i’m trying to convey but in a short amount of time (i’m at work lol) he did not follow any sort of after care therapy what so ever , absolutely was defiant and horribly mean to the devoted icu nurses while he was in hospital for the month he was paralyzed and recovering. he came back a total stranger and came back so angry so hateful so cruel and so defiant and totally unwilling to do any sort of therapy. only cared if he could be physical again which he regained but totally neglected the mental aspect and in my personal opinion due to experience, the MOST CRITICAL therapy necessary for recovery. please do not neglect the therapy needed for your mental recovery . it’s pivotal that you never stop trying to try new Things to keep your mind active . i’m sorry to end this so abruptly but i must get back to work and i don’t want to end up not posting this.
best of luck to all of you and my heart goes out to you and you’re all in my prayers. just remember: you are in charge of your own recovery and if you want to make the effort and do the due diligence to get to the point of feeling somewhat like your old self or even normal, it’s going to be the hardest thing you’ve ever done, seem hopeless and for what point since u had the stroke and damage has been done, but that is just your mind being stubborn. don’t listen to the negative thoughts and please please please do the therapy not just for yourselves but for your loved ones that are sticking it out with you day to day, without missing a beat, with all the love in their hearts and all the best intentions to help bring you back to “being you.” don’t neglect to remind yourself that not everyone is lucky enough to have loved ones who stick by their side and you don’t want to push or quite literally force them away. we all have faith in you and we all just are trying to help you find your faith in yourself again .

Thank you I had mine June 2011(Left side) but what was bad for me I lied on the floor for 3 days after I had mine (I lived alone) that's how long it took for someone to find me so I didn't get medical attention immediately after the stroke which is crucial as I understand it. Also I'm in a life situation where I dont have acess to a physiotherapist relyiing on youtube videos for my self healing. so 11 years on I'm still struggling with left side. Thanks for this information. I think that's the mistake I make I use the strong limbs mostly just to get throgh each day, I recovered enough to return to work,(deskjob) but then again its tough trying to survive in a world with one hand where everything is made for people with 2 hands.I need that second arm and hand to start working again. Hi Kelli, try little steps at a time, get a ball of tissue in your left hand and try to squeeze it and feel its texture , sit down and relax only concentrating on this one action, do it every day as many times as you can before you get bored !! it might just help your brain to start to sort out your arm, keep squeezing tissue then move on to a ball of wool, then a foam ball. soon be "benching" 200lbs. with your left arm and tearing doors off cars when you get angry.!!

Finding this video is a blessing. I just had a stroke 3 weeks ago its my left body that was affected but my doctor never explained much to me about what's going on. Its just that he said let's not mind about the numbness and immobility you are feeling and just control your BP. My BP has been stable for 2 weeks now so am starting on my PT. Learning about how to give demands to those good nerve and create the axon sprouting made me realize that i should not wait for my sessions but do small exercises on my own that i can do while doing nothing at home. Thanks a lot. So information with zero knowledge on the brain and everything... hehe.. thanks a lot.

Thank you so much for this video. I intend to continue to use my affected side daily. Even though my injury was 7 years ago. I can say since i discovered your channel in February, I'm having more movement and sensation on my left side ive never tried the constraint therapy. But at this point i will try it. I wish you were closer to Nc.

I'm new to this whole scene, moderate stroke last week.. can still walk and swallow and see, but right arm and leg are pretty screwed.. This is the most important and helpful video I've seen out of the hundred or so that I've watched. Thank you so much. I've heard about the concept of using the damaged side, but this explains it best, and drives it home. Look forward to more. Thank you so much.

Thanks , I’m learning and learning. To be brief my stroke was 4 years ago in did not know I was having one. Since I’m quiet physical it was easy for me to accept the exercises needed. I’m a healthy eater , I exercise and swim when the weather gets warmer. Hurricanes have stopped my teaching to swim and water exercise. The point, recently my right leg feels heavy , I have just had pace maker put in December , but I’m back in the gym. I am studying Spanish and do other exercises for the brain. I just would like to thank you for your videos, particularly the one about neuroplasticity , it has shown me where I must use the damaged leg more. As I use some of your recommendations , I will keep you up to date, not quit as long as this. I’m 88 years and have arthritis in my knees. I live alone and still drive . Again thanks you for your videos.

Pt is telling my son it is too late to expect change…..I totally disagree …..he has not had a far chance to even begin good therapy because of all the repeated problems. You have encouraged me and will be looking for your other videos so I can continue guiding him on the journey to recovery. His left side has some voluntary movement in the leg and some reflect movement in the arm. He has terrible nerve pain and strong spasms. Looking forward to finding answers in your videos. God bless you.

I had my stroke a year ago. After being unconscious for a week and a half, I spent the rest of that month in the hospital and the next 2 months in rehab with some great therapists. When I got home, I was mostly still using the walker and exercised 6 times a week on my own. Days 1 & 4, I worked on arm strength, days 2 & 5 on my core muscles, and days 3 & 6 on my legs. Ten months after, and walking on my own again, I was able to go back to work! Recovery is possible, but you have to work at it!

i had a mini stroke from chiropractic neck adjustment. after 2 or 3 weeks i did my first very light jog the most a quarter of a mile. total walked and jog i did like .8 of a mile not a complete mile and my vision stopped getting blury after that. i dont suggest jogging right away but walking is important to get blood flowing to the brain and nerves stimulated for healing. walking also cured my panic attacks before i had a stroke. stay away from cruciferous vegetable like kale the first few months it might hurt you . kale almost killed me again and i was bed ridden and dizzy the entire day but carrot juice didnt bother me. be careful what you do and do what works best for you and talk with your doctor

This is amazing. Thank you! I am so fortunate to say your videos have helped me tremendously. I did incorporate the “use your affected side” so your brain can send help to that side and form new connections. There are no videos on what someone should do to get assistance. Unfortunately, the hospital staff not the doctors, as they were great! But the staff at Hialeah hospital in Florida were not nice at all. They assume you know what to do and really don’t even share where to get connected to get help. I have worked my entire life and I can tell you after the pandemic many have suffered tremendously. Maybe you can shed light on a video as to where to go for needed assistance such as food assistance organizations to help you get assistance in general! I have always been there for people and some how when I needed helped everyone evaporated not interested in helping or want to get involved. If you doctor can create a video like that I believe it will bring a whole new massive of followers I was lucky to stumbled on your video. Many Blessings Your away!

This is day 7 for me. Nothing came up in the imaging and I left the Dr's office with no information and no treatment plan. Just a shrug of the shoulders. I still feel the pins and needles and am concerned. I passed out, and hit my head twice on the way down. Fully blacked out for about 5 mins (?) and the dog woke me up. So I'm dealing with symptoms from the concussion and if it was a stroke. Thank goodness for medical professionals like you who care enough to produce such life changing information.

So back in April 2018 I had two strokes that knocked me back to a wheelchair, but I was able to walk unassisted in 6 months. I was on my way to an amazing full recovery when in November of 2019 I suffered another minor stroke. That one knocked me back to a walker. I am recovering at a much slower pace, so I’m wondering what I should expect going forward. Thank You Nick G

Have been totally paralised on my left side .being 56 and ex special operations I have found the confusion the toughest problem to deal with .you 100% right the army neurologist that my wife spoke to told her to get me out of bed and onto the tread mill and the weight bench so I week after my Stoke I got up and started teaching my self again to run do press ups and burpees just like I used to and three weeks on you won't believe how I have improved

I had a stroke 2 years ago, whilst on vacation in Thailand. It was in the cerebellum on the right side. Was a clot type. Doc said I had lost about half a golf balls’ worth of tissue. Physical impairment was on the right . Walking I needed to keep my hand on someone as they walked with. spent a month going to rehab which was simple but effective. Plus on my own, I got a ball to relearn how to kick it again It was a bit heartbreaking to have to learn like a child how to catch a ball again. Definitely focused on right side tasks.
Returned home after a month and went back to work on large commercial aircraft as a mechanic . Move it or lose it.

Thank you. Six months today since my stroke. I’m finding rewiring to be really uncomfortable! I lost the ability to put tasks in order as well as long division. Also, walking across certain patterns in carpeting or changes in flooring can stop me in my tracks. Some left/right confusion too, but very lucky to still be able to walk and communicate.

I have had MS for 23 years. I am guilty of over compensating. (also having other people do things for you) Losing a lot of use of my left leg and arm. I am always working trying to improve them. (I can use my arm for driving more safely) 2 years ago I thought I would never be able to drive again. Over the years I have experienced NUERO PLACTICITY working. The bottom line is no matter how many years you have lost function. Keep trying. If you can only move your arm or foot an 1/8 of an inch today. Maybe tomorrow or next week you can move it 1/4 inch. Every little bit helps.

I'm 3 years recovering from a massive stroke the very best news is that the concept of neuroplasticity which I very much doubted it was such a slow visible change but it is beginning to improve by simply using it and doing motions with your bodies I seem to be getting an improvement and that is when you will see when a person has a stroke make a positive recovery because they believe that they're truly is Hope and it is beginning to happen hopefully so using it even though you don't feel like it and are too weak to use it you so have to that is the message... Keep moving!
