Make America Florida: Inside the state ‘where woke goes to die' | Times Documentaries

  • Republicans hold a supermajority in the Florida legislature and have passed several laws targeting what is described as the “woke left” by Ron DeSantis, the state’s governor who is challenging Donald Trump for his party’s presidential nomination.
In this documentary we travelled across the state to discover the impact of four of those policies: restricting abortions to the first six weeks of pregnancy, prohibiting discussion of sexuality in schools and requiring them to vet their book collections, and banning “gender clinical interventions” for under-18s.
Along the way we saw a seven-year-old “abortion abolitionist” tell passers-by they would burn in hell, met transgender teenagers who say they are “denied their humanity” and discovered the heart of America’s culture war.

It is just so strange to me (I'm German) that people in the US still obsess and fight about issues that have been resolved in all the other industrialized Western countries long ago. Is it because Americans have a tendency to go to extremes rather than agreeing to a middle ground? Or the lack of parties (only 2 for such a large nation is ridiculous)? This mutual hatred of two sides - each getting more and more extreme - is just odd considering you call yourself the land of the free and the shining beacon of democracy. Something went very wrong along the way. And I am by no means suggesting that European countries are perfect, definitely not the case. But your drama is next level.

There is one thing that the majority of the people don't get it, liberal democrats included, United States will never be fixed till it's education system is not fixed. Critical Thinking is not present in the American Education system. In Europe every exam you take you pretty much have to write an essay( I finished High school in France before moving to USA 20 years ago), literature, social sciences, history, geography... My last exit exam at high school in Biology I wrote an essay on Immunology( I still remember because I had really studied and barely got a B minus) even in science like in math, physics and chemistry you need to have a few connecting sentences in order to show your understanding of the subject. And this start from the age of 13 to 14........... If you ever do that in most US high schools, I bet 60 to 70% of the students will never graduate. I guarantee that if you give the essay in philosophy to the American students ( 70 to 80% of the students will fail). Multiple choices, fill the blanks well I had never heard of them till I came to start college in United States. 75 millions saw Trump lie, cheat, divide the country, make a fool of himself by asking if we could kill the virus by injecting bleach etc etc, and they decided that they wanted more of it. So in order to have a lot more functional adults you need to fix them when they are young. Our problem is no one even acknowledge this, then who is going to teach the critical thinking, if most teachers haven't been thought to think that way... Sadly, many Americans are so caught up in the mirage of nationalism, imperialism, and conservative theocracy and don't see how those lead to the destruction of democracy and freedom. First it's "anti-abortion," then it's "ban books," then it's "do not trust scientists," then it's don't say "gay," then it's "arrest parents of gender-questioning children," then it's "no interracial marriage," then it's a total ban of freedom. Anyone who votes Republican now is aiding the escalation of fascism even though they think they are voting for God and country. Thousands of others fought and died to protect us from fascism and now we see millions of Americans, even veterans, embracing it.

The protestors who believe that harassing and yelling at people in vulnerable positions is “loving their neighbor” is a good thing just makes me so sad. Seeing people use religion to hate just makes me so sad. The worst part of all of this is that so many people believe they are saving children and helping them be kids and live their lives. I live in Florida. All of this freakin sucks. I hope that we can come together next election to get these people out. I have many friends that are teachers and they have noted this year that the schools are in such fear of the state that the policies have been made extra strict. For example - forms go home which need to be signed if a child wants to be called by a different name that would normally be considered a nickname ( Chris instead of Christopher for ex) This is not part of the bill, but it just shows how scared the schools are.
The fact that the conservatives use God, Christianity and the Bible as their defense irritates me to the core. There is absolutely no separation of church and state. And as with anyone who uses the Bible as defense they cherry pick to the nth degree. For ex. according the bible life begins when the baby draws its first breath at birth. The Bible even has several "stories" where god is killing or is telling someone to kill babies. I love the "God doesnt make mistakes" argument - from someone wearing glasses, who likely has had to have medical procedures or use medication. If God wanted you to see, he wouldve given you proper eye sight.
I wonder in the bill that is put forth on genital mutilation if circumcisions count. Shouldnt the parents be seen as abusive for having a genital surgery done on their newborn child that is completely unecessary?
People are moving here from California to New York mostly because its so much cheaper than those areas. Someone from NYC can sell their apt and buy an entire mansion here with plenty of money leftover and reap all the wonderful tax benefits and great weather. People are moving because of the low unemployment rate, again with no state income tax taken away. The cost of living is rising so fast tho and i imagine transplants will start to slow except for the wealthy retirees reaping the benefits.
I wouldnt usually post a TH-cam comment this long but just so the world knows - Not Every Floridian. Many of the laws posted by our politicians go against what even their own constituents want (medical/legal marijuana for example). Polls and votes have been ignored by politicians who say "well, we know whats best." The only way to get out of this mess is to vote them out and for the rest of the country to PLEASE PLEASE not vote for DeSantis should he be on the ticket.

Circumcision at least aids cleanliness and reduces the transmission of bacteria, so it's not without use. I think it's disingenuous to compare something as simple as circumcision to taking the head off and relocating it , hollowing it out and flipping it inside out to create a girl- looking result. Not a decision a kid too young to consent to marriage (or even to have a beer) should be making.
Also, things like glaucoma, cataracts, etc. are ACTUAL DISEASES. "I'm a dude but I feel girly" is not a medical condion.

First of all separation of church and state does not seem to be a thing in Florida. There were multiple occasions in the video where they were using their christian religion to dictate laws on how everyone lives their life's.
Secondly it's absolutely more terrifying what that child is saying in the beginning about "God's gonna break the teeth out of your mouth" after the father says "The second greatest commandment is to love our neighbor as ourself" and the irony of it reflects very poorly on the father and what he's teaching at home.
Thirdly the lady protestor saying "I'd like you to get out of my face please" while simultaneously getting in women's faces, yelling at them, and shoving her agenda down their throat is absolute madness.
If they don't want to discuss sexuality in schools that's fine but it should go for all sexual orientations. Health education is still important and if parents don't want their child to attend, they can sign a form to skip it.

She mentioned he kid is reading above their reading level so either 1. Your kid can comprehend the message and story or 2. Your child can read words but doesn’t have great comprehension skills so they shouldn’t be reading higher level books.

The only could say if a heartbeat is detected. Weird parents make weird kids. It is one of those sayings I have. Violent parents often create violent kids and then violent adults. I wanted to be a pacifist but my peers so often sought to hurt me, and would cheat in sports to make sure I was hurt until I began to fight back. The coach and the boxing ring led me to achieving some peace within myself. I came to know that I could defend myself which gave me some more confidence. I cannot but agree that permanence of procedures before experiences that are natural to having the genes one has are too sad if considered to have been mistakes not much longer at all into a lifetime. Americans are greatest when they are both eclectic and ethical. Reversed it is ethical we must chose as the greater value to operate according to. If you do what is ethical one, or many, end up with no regrets. Fewer nightmares and better dreams go to the ethical.

I bet if you took a poll though most people will tell you they found out about sex from their friends or from watching porn or some crap.
      Not from their parents.
Other than telling their kids not to do it, must parents don’t talk to their kids about anything that even has to do with sex… ever.
This is WHY schools stepped in, to help kids understand facts. Often things that parents are uncomfortable discussing with their kids at any age.
So then the “parental choice” you speak of is the choice to give kids NO information at all. What good is that to them?
