  • Through the eyes of a group of people convinced that they knew the date of the end of the world, ‘Right Between Your Ears’ explores how people believe, and how we turn beliefs into certainties and then mistake them for the truth.
Many people have a strong sense that their views are right and couldn’t possibly be wrong. So how do we come to hold an unshakable conviction and why is it hard to consider that we could be mistaken?
A stock trader with a young family, a philosophy student about to graduate and a retail manager who became so convinced she quit her job of 18 years. As they face the consequences of their conviction, neuroscience and social psychology offer insight into how we can become convinced that we’re right, even when we’re wrong.
“A fun and warmhearted look at a community of doomsayers as they face the day of judgment, it ends up saying a great deal about how we all think.” - Louis Theroux

That's because our human need for certainty is a basic survival instinct, as powerful as our need for food or water. From the cradle to the grave we crave certainty of what is true. That's especially true of people like the leader who was trained as a civil engineer. They have extreme difficulty simply saying "I don't know."

I know, right? Those are the very hypocrites & false prophets the Bible warns us about, and I just don't know why people don't see that. The Bible clearly states that "no one" can tell when the so-called judgment day is. God never tells us to do some silly calculations to figure it out. Personally, I think that's everyday. God is watching us everyday & He knows which ones are which. God is all about Life & New Beginnings, so people should watch out for those hypo's & falso's spreading lies with their doomed ideas of endings & destructions. Our Lord Jesus Christ Lives On and so do we. There is no end.

    • @CroutonBear
      @CroutonBear 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

So anyone who is not lazy to actually read the Bible would have a sneaking suspicion that those hypocrites are actually satanists pretending to be Christians & deliberately trying to make real Christians look bad, hence the moniker "hypocrites"! So beware of fake churches, folks. Remember, when they try to give you a specific date to scare you, that should be a clue of a satanic cult pretending to be Christian church.

    • @CroutonBear
      @CroutonBear 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Also be wary of anything that asks you for money. That's another clue right there.
Also the Bible says not to cut or mark your skin, and also warns us against fortunetellers & psychic mediums. Remember just this bit and you can greatly avert the danger of falling as a victim of such fraud. So personally I would stay away from people-looking creatures with tattoos & piercings that like to see the stars in their cards. I know, it sounds too funny.

Well the church age is over, so your parents can't get on you violating God's command, when they themselves, didn't obey the command to flee the churches since God brought Judgment upon them.
The Churches are under the same wrath that is the world is currently under. Just as the churches went mad, with falling over backwards, speaking in tongues, holy laughter. So too has the world God mad. They've been given the same cup of wrath to drink as a Judgment upon them.
Jeremiah 25:15 ¶ For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. 16 And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. 17 ¶ Then took I the cup at the LORD'S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me:
The churches were sent this cup of wrath because Judgment FIRST began upon them. What happens if they refused the cup?
Jeremiah 25:28 And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.
Jeremiah 25:29 For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.
The city called by God's name is the churches in view.

But….those who spread this were mainly true believers, and who thought by warning as many as they could they were giving some the chance to repent and be saved for eternity. It’s like a person who has a dream that a particular highway overpass will collapse, and so thinks it will actually happen that day and run out into the road to block traffic and not let people drive onto the overpass….they are doing wrong, but for the “right” reason - they think they were helping people, and if correct, they WOULD be helping.
So, are there “perpetrators?” And if so…of what? Not fraud, as they absolutely believed they were right. And it’s unlikely a fraud “preacher” would make a fake prediction, which they knew would be shown wrong, and thereby lose most or all of their income. I don’t think there was a perpetrator, just people who were very misguided and not correct.

What about the people who gave All of their money to Camping? Sold their homes? What about the suicides? The people in this video were able to regroup but many were not. My cousin was one who was duped by Camping. He sent the guy $100 per month. In the last year prior to May 21st. my cousin received a letter from Camping asking him to Double his monthly donation, and my cousin did. He sent Camping $200 a month. So much for Camping claiming his literature was Free and rejecting the $5. That family became rich over it. They walked away with Millions $$$$$. Also, my father (not a Camping follower) who is a brilliant man, did the math based on Camping's self-proclaimed Biblical calculations and discovered Camping had miscalculated Biblical genealogy based on simple math.. The focus on analysis and treating the people involved the same as they would in any other study creates such a healthy outlook on it. While not involved in this sort of thing myself, I knew people who genuinely believed in Judgment Day, and the backlash they felt afterward ended up ruining some relationships, with some delving into deeper isolation and refusing any form of discussion. An approach to their situation like this makes me a little bit happier with humanity and academics.
Completely unrelated to this fantastic documentary, but Harold Camping sounds like the king from Disney's Atlantis.

They had no understanding of what was happening, and no vaccinations. They couldn't communicate with each other, except by messenger. That really was like hell on Earth.
Now here we are, in 2023, on the other side of a global pandemic, with understanding and vaccinations. Also, with fear-mongering being profitable. Global poverty is much lower than 50 years ago, life expectancy is higher than 50 years ago, globally, more people have access to medical care, clean water, and education, the holes in the ozone layer have repaired, people are re-wilding forrests, restoring ecosystems, re-introducing native animals that became extinct in those regions/ countries due to World War 2, etc, saving coral reefs, etc. Sure, there are many things that aren't ideal. Thank you for this thoughtful account of the Harold Camping debacle! I listened to his call-in radio show for several years prior to 2011, and the format Camping followed allowed him to manipulate and bully callers by just steamrolling over them. He would frequently begin an answer with, “well you see, the fact of the matter is…” thus allowing him time to pull something out of his hat. Sometimes he would not even answer a thoughtful question and just babble. What I found dangerous was his propensity to quote himself! He had been writing books and doing the show for so many years that he would quote earlier quotes from his own books! I also thought that many lonely people were soothed by his deep, sonorous voice, but his failure to take any responsibility for his own words was so disturbing. I hope and pray that his former followers have found some greater knowledge and peace.

Or take their children to a gay parade and watch half naked men lather baby oil over themselves. Or further more grow up with two Dads, or two moms. Or how about the high divorce rate that is permitted in society where children suffer trauma from their parents splitting up.

Minister, teacher, member...the date setters are some of the most passionate people you'll find, but, so are cult leaders. If what comes from the mouth behind the Pulpit doesn't match up with the Book, that should be a red flag.
The saddest of all, is to think about how many families followed an old man to the brink and were left there. Some places won't rehire a recent employee who quit. "Hey, so, the rapture didn't happen, can I have my desk back?" The kids involved are the ones who suffer the most, in these situations. They can't control what the parents do, but it directly controls everything about the child's life. talk about trust issues.

Support of a political leader that tried to overturn and election by cheating and attacking our capital. I am Catholic. Our pope denounces such things and we were the first Christians. The false hateful prophets in this country calling themselves evangelical are ungodly and not if God. Jesus didn’t teach what your churches teach. I feel very sad for people in your churches being led astray, away from the heart of Jesus. I feel sorry for what your churches have become and pray you find your way back to the Prince of Peace and away from your reliance on your own Biblical interpretations instead of the Holy Spirit.

A: ...frankly he starts out with wrong assumptions to begin with...how can he not go wrong...note this dismissive quote from Camping's "End of the Church Age, and After...it was a fatal error...
      "...The Preterit Position
Before we continue our study, we should look at the contention of those who insist that the teaching of Matthew 24 concerning the destruction of the temple was completely fulfilled in A.D. 70. In that year, the Roman Titus completely destroyed Jerusalem. Their contention is, therefore, that we are not to look at Matthew 24 or any other chapters of a similar nature to assist us with an understanding of the events in the church or the world near the end of time. This is theologically called the preterit position. Preterit simply means that which has already happened. The preterit position was held by many theologians in years gone by....
...Thus, we must understand that the so-called preterit position has no Biblical validity of any kind. WE must understand that the whole chapter is discussing the Great Tribulation and the end of the world. (Harold Camping, " End of the Church Age... and After", pg 126-127)

The Bible tells us that in the last days, we will be tortured and killed...like Christ was. Some people can't accept that, they took one scripture and made up that, instead of suffering, we'll be caught up in the clouds...
It ain't happening. There is no "out" from the persecution to come. The stage is being set. No one will rescue us. I believe what the Bible says is true. And it looks like the extremists, the evangelicals, will do the persecuting. They feel they have the right to hate and kill people who don't think like they do. They have perverted the word of God to fit their agenda. They scare me more than all the unbelievers. They have that cult mentality. Cults never end well...

I the early 00s I lived in Pennsylvania and could not escape Camping's voice. He was all over the radio and it drove me nuts to hear that droning pavement voice. Ten years later I'm living in Los Angeles and imagine my dismay when every billboard near the 101 Freeway seemed to have these wretched end-of-the-world Family Radio doomsday adverts. I felt like he'd chased me across a continent. This is a great documentary, but I think it comes up a little short in demonstrating the sheer ferocity of the ridicule Camping and his followers had to deal with the day after the apocalypse that wasn't: also just how many people quit their jobs, sold everything they had, and spent months preaching about this event only to find themselves ruined and living out of their campers -- if they were lucky enough to own one. One family racked up six-figure debts running up dozens of credit cards so they could have a good time, "knowing" they'd never have to pay it off. How'd that feel, the day after? Camping and his inner circle ruined a lot of lives and then told their victims, quite literally, to "cope."

There is a lesson and story that might be missed in this doc. They touch on it briefly. Harold Camping, for a generation, for many decades was a fairly orthodox, uncontroversial, 'family friendly', radio and sometimes television standard Christian pastor. Even if you were not an 'evangelical' type - few people could say a bad thing. Camping was a vanilla ice cream, reliable, steady stuff. So reliable, so admired, such a strong 'rock' of the church that when 'dementia' or call it 'senility' started taking its slow toll on Camping - nobody could see it. Nobody around him understood that Camping had to retire. Nobody could say anything.
There should have been a time when all the younger people (by young I mean 50 to 70) they should have lovingly but firmly moved Rev Camping into a retired non-teaching position.

A similar religious cult happened in Uganda, East Africa back in 1999 when one, Kibwetere told his congregation that the world was to end come the year 2000.
He told his followers to sell all their belongings and bring the money to his church with all their family members that God was coming to take them to heaven in an airplane.
Poor believers brought and gave all their money to their leader (Kibwetere) as they entered the church.
Fast forward; they all entered the church which was then tightly closed from windows to the main door with nails with Jerrycans of fuel for which they were asked to pour the fuel onto themselves. After that, they were asked to light up the candles which were in the church at that time. That was the end of their lives.
Meanwhile, Kibwetere, their leader was not in the church. He gathered what he could and eyewitnesses sighted him vanishing in a government vehicle towards DRC. To date, Kibwetere has never been convicted or even hunted down. Rumors are, he and his wife are in the USA.

The power of the cult depends upon the vulnerability of people. There is something desperately missing in peoples lives that they hang onto such irrational rhetoric. As said in the film by Dr Tavris, the more someone proclaims their belief in this organisation publicly, the more they’re invested in upholding this view. That’s when you see people rationalising the irrational. Now that really is the dangerous bit. People will say or do things not to look foolish, or ‘batting for the wrong team’.
So do we see this happening now? If so Where? Well, It’s happening right now, right under our noses, in the most dangerous of ways.
We only need to look at the political activity in the USA over recent years, more specifically in relation to Donald Trump. His language, his actions, his target group, his ability to say such utterly inaccurate things that are believed by so many without question. These for me, are undoubtedly the components of a cult which has no regard for the individual follower, only their leader and his ‘fixers’.
There are many other examples across the planet. But for me this is the one that presents the greatest danger for so many today.

@@croaton07 Exactly. Many cultures have very similar prophesies about the end times. Most are for faith and hope for a wonderful future. 🫠 Jesus, told us what signs to watch for, and Bible chronology gives us an approximate period of time, but Jesus also said the final hour would “suddenly be upon us” and come as a “thief in the night” with only His Father knowing the exact day and hour. He only wanted us to have our lives in order when that time came. If we are right with God, we should not fear that day, but rather look forward to it. Better times are ahead.👍🏽🥰💞✌🏽🫠

@@andyprompt True. 🙂 The world won’t end, because God’s original purpose for it and for us was to live forever. When humans decided they could function without God, He allowed us to use our freewill. That has been a disaster for us because we took the wrong path. We need our Creator. He sent Jesus to bail us out, but we can still screw things up as we have amply demonstrated. We have never been able to successfully govern ourselves. Evidence-based historical events have shown that when we’ve put our faith and trust in God and His Son, they’ve rescued us. It’s only a matter of time when Jesus will be the only ruler governing the earth, so we have a lot to look forward to. Only those who are blinded or have been led astray have reason to fear the future. For those who have accurate knowledge through prayer and evidence-based faith (as those mentioned in Hebrews 11), that paradise on Earth is a promise we can count on❣️👍🏽🙏🏼✌🏽🥰 We don’t have all the answers or full understanding because we are mere humans, but God provides the answers that we need. We just need to put arrogance aside and trust our Creator instead of putting our faith in imperfect humans. 🫶🏽💞😊

At the same moment, in Kiritimati (or Christmas Island, part of the Republic of Kiribati) - which follows UTC+14 - the time is 0000 on Monday i.e. Midnight. For the next hour (1000-1100 UTC), three different dates will exist in these 3 regions. After 1100 UTC, American Samoa will also enter Sunday. So how can anything happen globally on any single date?
