Reporters follow characters and experts from across the U.S. including the families of James Byrd, Vernon Dahmer and Medgar Evers, organizers of rallies in Charlottesville and Portland, and a reformed Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan.

This report is part of the “Hate in America” project produced by the Carnegie-Knight News21 initiative, a national investigative reporting project by top college journalism students and recent graduates from across the country and headquartered at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.
This documentary is also part of a collaborative reporting project called Documenting Hate, organized by ProPublica. InvestigateTV is participated in this national reporting project.

This video made me emotional. It took me a long time not to be upset about the racial issues we, as African Americans face. My grandmother did not allow me as a child to know what it was to be prejudiced. I didn't learn our history until I was 27 years old and in college. Needless to say that I was traumatized and hated white ppl. It took me a long time to get where I'm today. I do not hate anyone anymore. I wonder if there's a larger story at work here as well. A story about the economic system we live in. A system that has allowed working class wages to remain essentially unchanged in real terms over the past 30 years while the costs of goods and services have gone up. It's a system that has allowed the fruits of productivity gain to be captured almost entirely by those who are already rich, making them even richer. The American dream dies when everything goes to the top 1% and the rest of us stagnate within a hardscrabble life. When dreams die, anger and frustration can move in to take their place. It’s a very new country compared to others, and a whole new idea and experiment. Nowhere else had branded itself as a “melting pot” and tried to create a place where all races, religions, from all over the world to come and be part of it. With history of slavery and how many years racism has been prevalent, it’s gonna take some time to learn to love and for everybody to be accepted.

If we really looked at what our ancestors went thru we as blacks would not be able to harm another brother or sister of color if we looked back and saw really studied what our people endored we would be more accepting of each other.

I think we as African-Americans need to stop worrying about race relations in this country we didn't create the situation I think what we need to do is do the best we can and that's what we need to worry about relationships with each other the vast majority of European Americans are pretty much decent people and understand that a vibrant black community it's good for them to because all the negativity that the government created in the black community eventually seeps into the European American community.
