Busting Camping Myths - Solo Camping 🌲🏕🌲

  • Busting camping myths, solo camping. I am often asked if I get scared camping alone, am I scared of wild animals, reptiles or worse while I’m camping. Fortunately in New Zealand, there are no predators, it is a paradise for camping. My biggest concern is usually the weather as it can be fairly wild at times and often with rain and wind.
    In this video, I talk about some of the myths to do with solo camping in the hope that it will give you confidence to head out on your own. If you do try solo camping, and decide you’d rather be with other campers, I encourage you to do just that. Either way, enjoy the great outdoors in whichever way you feel comfortable.
    Relaxing camp beside the stream, setting up the tent, relaxing at the tent, preparing camp food, eating paleo camp food, enjoying the night sounds, listen to the night from the tent 🌳🏕🌲🌳

    The best things in life happen when we're outside of our comfort zone and until we push our boundaries, we'll never know what we like or what we're capable of. Independent and self-supported travel is for all of us however sometimes knowing where to start, how to prepare or what to expect can be a little overwhelming. Thats all good advice. Spent a lot of my life Backpacking in several countries, the last 40 years living in NZ. I have reached the age of 80 laps around the sun, health has put an end to my wonderings. Love your videos .it lookes like you are in the North island from🎉 the vegetation. Most of my time in NZ I have lived and explored most of the South.

    This is a really good video! Some quality information and I loved the delivery, watching you do all the set up etc with the voice over. Some good points too I had not considered about the dangers in groups and the idea to bring all your own gear and not rely on others. I recently did my first solo trip. I did 2 nights in the Kaimai ranges with a tent, pitching in the bush and not next to the huts either. Your channel was one of the ones that helped give me the confidence to do it so thank you!

      Have you any recommendations for the Kaimais, it’s not an area I’ve explored much? I love the bush as it gives shelter, though keep an eye out for any deadwood above ⬆️ 🏕️🌲

    As always a treat, and very sound advise, too. In Norway they have a saying, 'det er ingen skam å sno,' meaning it's no shame to turn back. In Scandinavia wildlife seems to be much more wary of humans, only once I've had something nicked by animals, and that in a crowded campsite. And congratulations on your rising subs number!

    • @FreewheelingKiwi
      @FreewheelingKiwi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello E Smith, recently I came very close to turning back in shocking weather but I stopped, brewed a cup of tea, had food and that was enough to restore me on that occasion. Other times if I didn’t have a tent I’d have had to turn back when things don’t go quite to plan with daylight. Agree 100% if you need to turn or adapt, do it.
      I had my only shoes nicked by a dingo 🐕at Ayer’s Rock in the Australian desert, was lucky they dropped it 100 meters away and I found it again. Maybe it didn’t taste too good 😖😁

      @@FreewheelingKiwi It's astonishing what a cup of tea can do. Or any such comfort. Even the sun's appearance on a wet and gloomy day may restore ones courage. Nice to hear your voice, btw, and the Kiwi ring to it.

      @@FreewheelingKiwi yes it is, such a shame. I’ll do some research regarding walks but if you have time my suggestion would be The Border Ranges where there is camping at Forest Tops or Sheepstation Creek and doing the associated walks up there. Closer to us there is Mooball National Park, Springbrook and Natural Bridge but the Border Ranges is my favorite.

    Great video and I like the commentary in the background it flows a lot better just giving you some feedback. I like solo camping, that point you mention other people can make poor decisions that impact the rest of the group negatively. I like to listen to an audio book at night too. I’m originally from nz but live in AU. Was recently in Queenstown to hike the routeburn for the 3rd time it’s a beautiful walk. I miss the camping in NZ. AU critters are a little more concerning 😊. I watched a few of your great walks vids and notice in this one you have upgraded some of your gear - are you able to do an update video or the gear you pack for a multi day hike and overnight hike ❤ new sub here

    • @FreewheelingKiwi
      @FreewheelingKiwi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much for your kind feedback and sub, it's much appreciated. Was there any particular gear that you thought was an upgrade as I think this is similar to what I've used on the Great Walks? Routeburn is fabulous, I'm looking forward to walking through there again, though hopefully in the sun ... 😅. You are so right, New Zealand is very easy compared to Australia for staying safe from animals, the most intrusion I get are noisy possums in the trees above 🌲🏕️💚

    • @thirstymercfan
      @thirstymercfan ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FreewheelingKiwi you’re welcome, the sleeping bag looks smaller or maybe it’s the compression sack you are using. Also was wondering what sleeping pad you are using. We are to blame for the possums 😅 I’m slowly upgrading my hiking gear, I’ve done a lot of hiking over the years in Patagonia, Himalayas, I like seeing what other people are using and their pros and cons

    • @FreewheelingKiwi
      @FreewheelingKiwi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thirstymercfan Well spotted, yes the sleeping bag is new since the earlier videos, it's a RAB Women's Alpine Pro 600. Being warm is a priority for me as I really feel the cold as well as the compressed size. I'd hoped to get it small enough to fit in my bike packing kit but it's not so I still have the 30 years old one which is like sleeping under a sheet 😬 My mat is a Klymit Insulated Static V Lite Sleeping Mat and I recommend both. Ooooh Patagonia and Himalayas sounds wonderful and are on the list, which were your favourite treks there?

    • @thirstymercfan
      @thirstymercfan ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FreewheelingKiwi Ill check out the sleeping mat. In Patagonia I did the full o circuit @ torres del paine, it was amazing especially coming over the pass and seeing Glacier Grey - Its spectacular and the weather is another story. However my favourite hiking in Patagonia was actually in El Chalten - Cerro Torre and Mt Fitz roy. They really are beautiful. The famous TDP - definitely has more big sky montana like feel to the hiking which I loved, I just enjoy Alpine hiking a bit more which I why I loved El Chalten more. That was a great trip, hiking through Chile and Argentina then I went down to Antarctica for 2 weeks. Himalayas: - EBC was bucket list and just amazing seeing that first glimpse of Mt Everest after 3 days of hard walking 😊
