- In this video I’ll share with you what I’m taking to walk Te Araroa, New Zealand’s Long Trail, 3000 km from Cape Reinga to Bluff. This walk will take 110 to 130 days and I’ll be carrying everything I need in my backpack aside from restocking food along the way.
This gear list applies the same if it’s a multi day hike or a thru hike like New Zealand’s 3000 kilometre Te Araroa trail which I’ll be hiking 2023/2024.

Nice set up. Looking forward to your videos.
Thank Te Aroha, much appreciated 😀
Very organised. As you go along the trail it will be interesting to look back and what you used and didn’t and what you added or dropped along the way. I just hiked the Three Capes Track and the Overland Track in Tasmania. Both were amazing, Three capes was the standout tho 😊
I’ve heard other hikers say the same about the Capes. One day maybe I’ll get the opportunity 😀. My biggest concern at present is warm clothes and I’ve tried very hard not to “pack my fears”. When I made the video, there was rain and wind lashing the windows and I had the fire going. Hard to imagine camping in just a few days 🏕️
You go girl! Amazing what you can fit into 50ltr. Well done.
Thanks for watching and your kind words Clinton 😀
Wow, you have been busy Sharon, however knowing kiwi bloody weather? There is probably something you left out. O.o
Like snow shoes, or oil skins. LOL. Great idea with the large bin liner, beats paying heaps for an overpriced piece of plastic wet sack. Take 2. put 1 inside the other, in case of emergencies. I've seen some of those foot prints you speak of. I'd rather take a small lightweight tarp to use as footprint, then it can also be used as an emergency shelter if needed.
Lol you know it, that weather ⛈️🌀💨, just keep those sea breezes on your side of the Tasman at least until I’m off 90 Mile Beach.
There’s so much more I’d like to take by way of wet and cold weather clothes but I’m relying on the forecast El Niño season ☀️🕶️. Not sure why, the rain seems to follow me, I break droughts wherever I go 😅
@@FreewheelingKiwi You could sell that rainmaker ability, to those that are in drought, or semi drought Sharon. 🌧☔
Interested in your choice of footwear, and are you using a couple of options depending on the tracks?
Thanks for watching, I used trail runners for the 133 Days and very pleased too.

Im interested in why you decided to start the walk in the beginning of October which is earlier than most if I understand correctly?
To get ahead of the crowds as facilities are limited on trail. For example some huts are two person and I’ve heard of 70 people starting on the same day 😖
Do you need that extra whistle? I thought all the Osprey backpacks have a whistle integrated in the sternum strap?
That’s interesting, no my one doesn’t. Could that integration be a new feature, this pack is three years old 🤔
@@FreewheelingKiwi No it's a pretty old feature :) Maybe not all their models have it.
Did you wear trail shoes for the South Island? Or boots?
Thanks for watching. I wore trail runners the whole time

Which trail shoes are best wearing?
Depends on the trail 😀
