    Winter camping is nice. 1) I usually do over-nighters at the camping grounds an hour drive from home, there's usually nobody else there in the winter. 2) The nature is quite beautiful covered in snow. 3) I like gear, I have good winter gear and it's fun for me to get to use them 4) There's challenge and feeling of accomplishment 5) There's no bugs! 6) Breathing cold air while in a warm sleeping bag is quite refreshing 6) The winter is quite long around here and it would be a long break otherwise 7) Making fire in the winter makes a lot more sense than in the summer and warming up around it is very pleasant. 8) Winter nights are dark and you can see the stars, maybe even the northern lights. In the summer it's quite bright all night around here. 9) There's nothing else going on during cold winter nights, everyone's home or whatever, so not missing out on anything by going camping for the night. 10) It's not raining. 11) House is not full of pine needles and small animals when I hang stuff to dry 12) I can be like my huge idols on youtube such as Justin Outdoors :)

    I like winter trips during snow storms and cold snaps because it make me feel super human. It's a dopamine boost to be playing out in the woods when the world turns to a ball of ice and you're there braving it while toasty warm. Man was not made to live in a concrete jungle. Man was made to live in nature. It feel right. That's why both you and myself, and I'd suspect anyone else who willingly braves the wild, feels the way they feel about it.
    Once you start off down this particular path there is no turning back.
    I will drive 6 hours on a Friday after work, while tired, to get out in the boonies, stumble around and set-up camp in the dark wee hours of early Saturday morning, just so I can pack up 24hours later and get home in time to sleep a few hours before heading right back into work. It's an addiction and an obsession but never something I regret doing; even when things go wrong. Actually, when things go wrong, those instances make for the best stories. haha.
    p.s. I don't use wood stoves because I'm broke. I've been meaning to make one but I do have a husky that works an an awesome blanket heater.

    When I start winter camping, it was to understand how the itinerants was able to sleep outside without any gear...because it was hard for me at the beggining to stay warm even with a- 20 celcius sleeping bag and adequate sleeping pad. The second reason was to understand the alpine climbers who have to sleep in a tent during 2 months in a row. They should be more than passionated for their sport to keep going and sleep in winter temperature that long. Now that I understand that better, I do winter camping to be stronger mentaly and be prepared for the rough time of life. When something is hard or bad in my life, I know that it will be better tomorrow, as during a winter trip when sometimes things go wrong...but the day after everything is fixed and life is easy again. Thank for all your videos. Guylaine Doucet (Québec)

    Thanks for testing all this gear for us. It can get quite pricy if one just goes by trial and error. The other option is to follow reviews but the problem is that many reviewers do only basic tests or unboxing in exchange for free items. Beautiful system for sleep. Using an external synthetic bag is quite reasonable. I do this not only when it is very cold, but also when very high humidity, for example, late autumn. You can add a layer of snow under the pad and then additional layers of insulation are not required. Snow is a good heat insulator. Very good food for winter - dumplings. I went to celebrate the New Year in the forest and took the dumplings, cooked them there. Together with hot broth, they do not cool so quickly. To save liquid water, use a thermos.

    Lovely videos: For anyone who wanna try this, I am a cold weather expert glacier mountain guide. so please listen. If you test these temperatures and you are unsure if you can make it and doing with a car close by.. The best thing you can is leave the car running with a little higher rpm with help of a stick. Why: from minus 30 to whatever you cannot be sure the car will start again. With low rpm the exhaust can freeze and clug up.
    extra fuel in a Jerry can, then you don't have to worry about running out of fuel. Please be safe and enjoy the outdoors

  • @bucky716
    @bucky716 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thumbs up to you showing "hey see, my car is 2 seconds away." Obviously still a massive challenge being outside in these temps but so many youtube videos portray being "out in the woods" but I'm guessing majority are near a car or out in some way as well. Nothing wrong with it but too many probably see these and attempt to go out into the woods without that safety net.

    i've done winter camping, though its been "base camping" where we use actual cold weather tents. with a proper double walled tent, -40 and down isn't an issue. Both in the 5 man and in the 24x36 tents. though 24x36 we cheated and used kerosene turbo heaters.
    But even in a good double walled, 10x16 (well technically we triple walled it, cuz we had the inner winter liner, outer canvas, and an "extra" outer "fly" to protect the canvas, to help the tent last longer. You set that up with a good Alaskan wood stove, 4 beds, kitchen area, table, chairs, you are set for as long as supplies keep coming in.

    I started watching your channel because of your snow camping adventures, but subscribed because of your top shelf gear knowledge. Currently I snow camp in a Bereg 5p hot tent and it's the best but super heavy. Then I also hot tent in a similar teepee when I need to be a little lighter, but honestly your non-hot tent backpacking winter setup has encouraged me to up my gear game, both winter and summer. I mostly overland camp so weight hasn't been a huge factor but securing campsite reservations in California has grown too competitive so there's many scenarios where I need to backpack to be able to camp in the parks. Plus going lighter helps my off-roading capabilities so it just makes a lot of sense for my build out.
    But I love camping in the winter. One aspect is my gear always is a few clicks overpowered for the temperature so it's nice to be cozy in the cold, but also I discovered that I can enjoy some natural hot springs in the winter and it's literally my favorite outdoor thing to do.

    • @JustinOutdoors
      @JustinOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustinOutdoors probably Idaho would be good next time you go south. I'd check the water temps when planning because although the state has a lot, some of them are not that hot. In Mammoth California they'll cook you so you might find yourself getting out to cool off while you're surrounded by snow. Most of the ones I've encountered have been less than a mile hike but one other advantage of your lightweight loadouts is you can get to the less traveled springs in the Backcountry

    I'm new to winter camping as of this year. Was just out for the third time last night in Frontenac Prov Park where it got to about -15C last night. Nowhere near the famed Alberta -40s and colder. What a great tip on the use of a synthetic quilt over down to change the dew point. I will do that from now on since I notice the top of my down quilt is often a bit damp.

    My go to extreme -40c bitter cold is the Russian Bear "Bereg UP2 hot tent with med stove" with insulated underpad. Outside temperature can be -40c to -50c,in the tent is 70F to 80F. Load the stove before bed and will last up to 6 to 7 hours of burning time. Always use a carbon monoxide detector, smoke alarm and fire extinguisher. I use a woods cott with wool blanket on top with Neoair 6.9 pad...Browning "Klondike" -30 sleeping bag and add Browning "Canmore" -20c inside with a downfilled balaclava...sleeping above ground is much warmer. Mind you,it's not a backpacking tent,it weights 51 lbs and stove 15 lbs. You'll need a long sled for all your gear. Been in Northern Ontario, Can in extreme cold and never any problems with this system... 5 star rating. Thanks for the share 👍

    I LOVE to winter camp, but the wind this year has made it tougher on me. Last week all well below zero F, but winds were 50-60mph, and here in NE Iowa, it's so flat it's hard to get any wind protection. But I have another trip planned Monday-Wed, still below zero but winds will be around 15-20, so much easier to deal with. I don't have a hot tent/stove setup yet, but do have a diesel heater to keep the chill and moisture down. I have a Marmot -40F bag that I finally coughed up the money for, so like you, I don't have to have the heat on during the night. Just nice to have it on in the eve and morning when you get moving around, especially at age 56 with as bad as my arthritis is LOL. Thanks for keeping me motivated to going out in the winter! Friends always ask why winter camping, I always say there aren't any bugs and even less people :)

I did -27C recently without hot tent at Rummel Lake and it about the extreme of my gear - also probably not the wisest choice in hindsight but wasn't planning on temps quite that low. Justin! Love that your pushing yourself! Was supposed to get out in -20°F this weekend but illness struck so had to cancel (not covid lol).
    So did a little gear shakedown two weeks ago to 5° (vid on channel). My one hangup with the ranger is I kept waking up turned on side so my face was inside the hood and I was breathing all moist air inside the bag instead of snorkel. As a fellow side sleeper do you ever experience this?

    • @JustinOutdoors
      @JustinOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually only wake up a couple of times in the night, but when shifting, I have to use my hand to shift the hood with me. It's one of the reasons I love a quilt, I can shift without waking up.

      The sleep system isn't that much heavier, but the stove and fire making stuff ads A LOT of weight!

    Awesome video as always Justin! I don't think you ever showed what the inside temperature was, only the outside temperature. Do you mind sharing that? Also, at what time did you stop feeding the stove with firewood (approximately)? I'm pretty curious about the relative contribution of the stove. I recently camped in -20 C and the inside of the tent (double walled) was never below -5 C. Surely a stove plus a tent would provide a huge temperature boost!

    • @JustinOutdoors
      @JustinOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Inside temp got up to 5C while it was -35C outside (when I went to sleep). The stove was cold to the touch by the time I stopped reading and went to sleep - so it didn't contribute anything to the warmth in the tent.

    Diesel engines performance in winter weather is far superior than propane or gasoline engines

    I learned to winter camp in the CF army reserve but the coldest I’ve slept outside was -40C. (However that was literally outside without a heated tent lol)
    My last winter trip was with the family without heated tents at -8C. This year I bought a stove and the same tent and had plans to camp over the Christmas holidays but COVID came to visit the household so hopefully I will get out in a week or two.
    When you mentioned the water bottle cozy I thought you were going a different direction. You should fill your bottle with hot water before bed and put it in the cozy in your sleeping bag. That way it helps keep you warm but also you have liquid water in the morning! :)

    • @JustinOutdoors
      @JustinOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm heading out sometime soon for a no shelter camp! Enjoy your trip with the fam. I'm always hesitant to put my water bottle in the sleeping bag as I've seen people leak water all over their bag and end up in dangerous situations. While it wouldn't have been as big of a problem in this case, it would be pretty bad if in a remote location.

      @@JustinOutdoors agreed on the risk. I’ve done it a couple of times using a large ziplock as extra protection but it’s a risk for sure!

    Great video, just super. Amazing. Thanks for working so hard on your videos and putting together the gear list. It did look like fun. Question for you, how did the tent perform, it did look like there was a fair amount of condensation on the walls.

    • @JustinOutdoors
      @JustinOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really liked the tent! Perfect amount of space for me and the stove while still being very light. It's impossible to avoid condensation in the winter (and a lot of the time in summer). Luckily the tent is big enough that I had no issues avoiding the sides of the tent.

    How did you survive without a scarf or a neckwarmer and not having gloves on for most of the video sections? 🥶 I can't stand having my neck exposed in the cold. I also wonder about reflective mat underneath. They are not breathable at all, so it might promote condensation more than warmth, especially if you have the reflective material faced upwards. The sleeping bag sure looks warm. The "snorkel" probably makes breathing cold air more tolerable, but it also looks very claustrophobic. 😅 Good video!
