KIA PICANTO SCORES 0 STARS IN CRASH TEST

- The Kia Picanto 2020-2022, produced in South Korea and equipped only with driver frontal airbag as standard was rated with zero stars, achieving 0% in the Adult Occupant box, 29% in the Child Occupant Box, 51% in the Pedestrian protection Box and 7% in the Safety Assist Box. Antilock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) are not standard. Side body and head airbags are not available even as optional. The potential double front airbag as standard would not improve the score of the model as the Adult Occupant Protection box will still score below the minimum percentage to reach even one star.
The model was tested in frontal impact, side impact, whiplash and pedestrian protection. In the frontal impact both the driver and passengers chest were coloured red (poor protection) due to the high loads and structural instability. Side impact showed poor protection to the chest bringing the points for this test to zero. Whiplash test also showed poor protection to the neck. Side pole impact was not performed as the car does not offer side head protection as standard. The Picanto does not meet United Nations regulations on Pedestrian Protection.
Latin NCAP does not recommend to buy cars without ESC, pedestrian protection and side body and head airbags and cars of zero and one star performance.

Ive been a firefighter for 20 + years, always working at stations that attended frequent road traffic collisions. Back when i started the cars were often 10 or 20 year old at that time and they didnt hold up very well. These days i see people walking away unharmed from collisions with trees ! Its amazing really .
Actually, the structural resistance of the car looks good
The car is so stiff there wasn't enough time to absorb all those impacts... it's like doing a collision in an F1 car but without a HANS device
The reason for the low score is due to minimal safety features offered. Only 1 airbag in Latin America. Other markets shud have better safety rating as it is better equipped.

This particular version of the vehicle is probably intended for poorer markets, in Australia the cheapest model Picanto has a full compliment of airbags and autonomous braking even on the base model.

This version is probably made for "poor" south asian countries, like India or Bangladesh, which have low safety requirements.
Here in south america minimum safety equipment gets better each year, and in this case, the Kia Picanto comes with at least two airbags, ABS + EBD, protection bars on the doors and Isofix connection points here in Colombia.
Exactly, this is the Latin NCAP, not the Euro NCAP. Most cars in the Latin version have like 1-3 airbags. Even bigger cars and from other brands.
@@durgymp false. Really few of the cars sold in the colombian market, for example are sold with basic safety equipment. My 4 year old Ford Escape comes with the same amount of airbags as everywhere else, 7, the new Nissan Versa comes standard with 6 airbags and AEB, and so does the all new Chevrolet Tracker (Trax in the US).
Only the most economic cars come with basic equipment right now which is two airbags, ABS and ABD and Latch/isofix seats, such as the chevy Spark, the outgoing Nissan March and the Hyundai i10. It took me quite some time to find these examples.
Most of the cars have AT LEAST 4 right now. We're not caveman dude.

@@simonrook5743 The front passenger is at almost equal risk to front impact injury. In addition side airbags are crucial protection in side impact and front overlap crashes, that;s why they are required in the US.
The Picanto (2018 model) I am driving has additional 6 airbugs + ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) & Brake-Assist System (BAS) for each wheel independently. They just picked the cheep version

What's incredible is how much safer this vehicle is in respect to the ones that took "0" stars ten years ago.
In Australia, the Aus version gets 4 star (5 highest) ANCAP rating.

So this crash test, obviously, does not apply to all territories that the Picanto is sold.
This is tested by Latin NCAP, it's NCAP for Latin America market. Kia Picanto is actually one of the safest car in it's class but it still get poor score if it didn't equip some modern safety features as standard because regulations nowadays are being strict than before.
This car held up better than most cars tested at consumer reports. IDK about 2020 but the 3 years prior they where 3rd one year and tied for 3rd for 2 years. closest of our big three was ford at number 15 for reliability.. My wife has her second kia this one she has put 104,000 on it and only thing that had a problem fan made a ticking sound it was fixed under warranty. As far as maintenance front and rear brake pads. Free oil changes every 5,000 miles for as long she owns the car.

Nowadays EuroNCAP only cares about lane departure warning, emergency braking, etc....but what happens when all those systems fail?
Bear in mind NCAP tests are not homologation tests. They don't have the same criteria. The reason manufacturers send their cars through NCAP tests is because they give a grade and not just a Yes/No results, which makes it easy to capitalize on in terms of marketing.

Few days ago I hade major car accident in Kia picanto
I was driving 90/h on right lane straight ahead
Suddenly Subaru B4 hit me in rear taillight at speed of 150km/h
My car lost wheel from that crash and was totaled!
Car spoon up on the road and ultimately hit highway seperation concrete wall with left side.
Me and my friend got out of car basically unharmed
Driver and his companion for other car also survived the crash and no major injuries as well, no broken ribs or bones not even concussion,
I don’t know what or who gives this small car 0 points on safety… but I am alive because of amazing safety of Kia picanto and work of safety engineers from Korea ..

Don’t get it. The cabin remained intact and the occupants looked protected.
No side airbag, no front passenger seat airbag, no leg airbag, none SRS airbag, no back airbag, no window airbag, weak body, weak glass, no TC and ABS. Better buy a Toyota Prius or Corolla. SRS Airbags and side airbags were attached. Stronger body even it costs high. Kia priced its cars cheap just to drag people in a shredder. Price can be low, but safety is always first.
This was the safest one I ever seen for the driver.

Having electrical problems with my main car and was considering replacing it with one of these or the previous model as I'm going VERY well financially this year unlike most. But I won't get one now. Tbh a picanto a few years old is ALWAYS more expensive than a rio for some reason.

Being such a small car, the 4-door stucture and the roof held on so well, and the side hit as well. Really don't get why it was scored 0. On the contray, one of the Txxxxx brand case, the left side main bone was shrinked to the fire wall, the door shape had been changed badly, gets a 5 star ??!! What's the meaning of this crash test ?? The test should give more weight to basic cabin strength.

my picanto Xline from 2020 has airbags, idk if this is an earlier model?
The safety cell held its shape very well. The airbag is unusual.and most likely for markets where the full compliment aren't required.
from footage i didnt see any major impacts to to head or dashboard didnt go into passangers, yes, it was a crash test but no visible major damage to occupants, on passanger seat,
they are probably comparing this tiny car to volvo SUV...
this car most of the time is driven in cities, and most likely vast majority of crashes will be at relatively low speed, heck this car cant even 'really' drive very fast at all, most likely 90-100km/h most of the time and at these speeds and environments, this car is actually very safe..
tho, hitting a wall at 150km/h in this car probably wont be very pleasant, but then again, it has nice collision avoidance systems, automatic braking, lane keep-assist and other features, and if you drive normally and dont do crazy things on road, you will be safe.
at very least, much safer than most cars 10-15 years ago for sure.

survival space is plenty, the front passenger didnt even touch the dashboard, the driver's head landed on the airbag. Idk why this car got 0 star, it should be for cars that offer no protection at all.

Poor restraint belts, seats and only 1 air bag. Im guessing this is more to be low cost though. The frame seemed to hold up but those people were flying around in there.

don't worry this is a budget dowgrade spec picanto. here in the Philippines it has 6 airbags . in your country have better specs so expect that your car is 5star rating. each country have different laws.

Just so people know, this is a korean kia. American kias have a lot better safety ratings ( usually 4-5 stars ). In korea they are forced to do cost cutting in order to make a profit because of the low income.

When euro ncap crash tested the picanto, it gets 3 stars but how on earth did it became 0?
They have removed the European safety kit, so the car only gets a drivers airbag, no side airbags, no passenger airbags, it looks like no ISOFIX either.
It is similar to the base model?
@@seanalicante7299 not the European version. The European version gets 6 airbags, ISOFIX, ESC, abs etc. You even get auto emergency braking on higher trim levels

I been riding bike all my life, the only protection I have is the helmet, so, this 0 star tiny car is still a good option, the important thing is how you drive and your ability to predict dangerous situations.

Yes the passenger cage look fine after crash but airbags act as a very crucial device to separate you from touching the car body that is absorbing the car impact.
