Thanks for another great tutorial! Just a little tip from the addon developer here, for those base color of green and yellow, rather than using texture paint fill, you can use solid color layer with color ID mask for assigning faces in edit mode into a different colors. It's easier to do and even more non destructive since you can always change the solid color anytime. You can see the examples of how to do just that in my channel in the video 'Painting anime eyes demo'.
First, thanks @molterbolt for the basic tutorial and thanks @ucupumar for the addon, then it is indeed more practical with a solid color and an mask color ID, but to add the smearing, if I'm not mistaken, we must add a second mask with a mask image.
I've been doing 3D animation, modeling, photoshop and illustration work since 1990... photoshop was just a baby then! I've used many different 3D tools (3dsMAX, Maya, Softimage, Cinema, formZ, EIAS, etc etc) Ive worked in game, feature film and commercial capacities. Using blender for the past few years, it has the worst most confusing disaster of a paint system I have ever seen. Ucupaint looks like a breath of fresh air and I look forward to putting it through the gauntlet of tasks with extensive work.
This is awesome at this point you practically don't need SubstancePainter at this point and can do almost everything inside blender. Thank your for showing me this.
I used this tutorial to get into ucupaint for the first time and wow! what an amazing tutorial for an amazing addon. I'm now really excited what I can do with ucupaint now!
For anyone who is looking to fix some... hiccups or just want some other elements in your belt that this... frankly smooth and slower paced Tutorial from Molten Bolt, here you all go: When you are using the NUM PAD's 7 (for top down), 1 (For looking from the Y axis AKA Front on), or 3 (For looking from the X axis AKA looking from the right on) you can press 9 on the NUM PAD to flip your view to the other side, or 8, 4, 6, or 2 to adjust the alinement. HOWEVER, do note that if you use the 8, 4, 6, 2 buttons it'll lock your view camera to Orthographic and will make a lot of view angles not feel right. This is fixed by either pressing 5 on the NUM PAD or 7, 1, or 3 then moving your view as per normal. That said, I'd say the ~ button is by and far just easier to use than the NUM PAD as it allows you to get just about right on what you want. Buuut, it doesn't let you slight adjust the ortho view... so there's that. Next item on the list: "Why is Molten Bolt's Krita strokes looking so different than mine?" He's using a stylist and tablet. While not "NEEDED" it makes artistic stuff like this WAY more pleasing to look at. If that wasn't the case, I am unaware of how he had a mouse stroke do the hard to fade thing. XD Honestly, this time around, that's all I got to add! Well done Molten Bolt. I couldn't think of much else to point out or add to the discussion. Which is awesome. I had hiccups, as I'm sure others will, but that's what practice is all about. The more you use something the more you'll understand it. Once you have a good foundation, branch out a little and see how far you can push the tools you have. But, I'd say only after you understand things at the base. There are so many hiccups I run into that I'm like "Oh, okay, that's related to this... soooo look in this menu... what's different? OH! Okay, that option is on when it normally isn't" and fix the issue. Though other times it takes me hours to figure out what is wrong. (Though I do still figure it out on my own I should have just asked for help XD) The fact that it is super easy to get Ucupaint (Which I kept hearing you say U two's paint XD) straight from blender's in system menus is VERY helpful.
I really appreciate the series you've been doing about ucupaint; I've been using csp+clip studio modeler for my texture painting and going into 3d-coat to finish painting out the seams but I'm hoping ucupaint + auto reload streamlines that process a bit for me so there's less back-and-forth between applications.
This will be the first tutorial of anything Blender related in a really long time, always preferred in-house texturing and discovering Ucu paint might be the resolve!
Nice add-on and a really in-depth tutorial I'm busy with a 3D anime model of Blue Mary. I'm going to put Ucupaint to work when I start on the environment.
This is awesome!!! I love it. I have been waiting for this in Blender for a long time and now that it is free I am so happy. Good tutorial that is well presented and useful. Thanks! Is it me or are you pronouncing it "u too paint"? I'm probably just hearing it weird.
Hehe thanks, I'm glad it's helpful 😁 I pronounce it "you-chew-paint" because thats the way that Ucupumar (the addon's creator) pronounces it. And yes it is far and away my favourite free Blender addon!
I actually learned last week that if u use blenders built in sample Color picker ,you don't need to change the shading mode to get the exact color cause if u access the picker through its shortcut while in paint mode it selected the rgb value that is unaffected by shaders, so it selects true color. but I had to go into my blender shortcuts to find it.i changed it to "I" key like most painting tools, and since blender is context sensitive is didn't affect my shortcuts that are out of paint mode.Give it a try.
Interesting... but would be nice to see how it handles several imported image textures, with scale size variations.. For example: would be very interesting a Ucupaint tutorial where is like the Unreal Landscape Editor, where you have different ground textures that you can manage different UV sizes for each texture and blend them seamlessly, in order to get mixed result .
Here's one trick from the addon's creator, Ucupumar: vxtwitter.com/ucupumar/status/1745010963492016421 And here is a good example of mixing textures: th-cam.com/video/d3Z7XnYa3oY/w-d-xo.html Hope that helps!
From what im seeing this wouldn't be a substance painter alternative in the realism sense. But it looks like low poly or stylized painting this addon can be very damn great
It actually can do some pretty amazing stuff with realistic PBR as well, I just don't often render in that style. Passivestar has some good examples, as does Ucupumar (the addons creator). Its a sick addon
after I have seen your videos about this addon various times I think I finally grasping how it works and is amazing, but there are some things that I till dont fully understand like for example how masking works exactly? I mean like layer masks like in photoshop or substance if theres something similar here and, you can paint in another channel that is not the base color? I hope so, thanks for another cool video
Yeah Ucupaint is awesome. And yes you can use layer masks just like any other painting software. I dont cover them much in the tutorials, but you can look up Ucupumar on youtube, hes the creator and has a buncha useful vids too
Nice, going to try this addon 😊👍 can you incorporate color attribute data from sculpt mode in this layer system? If you bake it to a texture for the uv maps?
I'm not super used to Unity as I usually use Unreal, but at some point I'll get around to looking at how maps are packed for Unity and I'll post about it! 😁
Im hoping that in the future, plugins will be able to add their own panels. Everything being shoved into the little side-panel is super inconvenient and clunky.
Ucupaint IS awesome hehe though I would agree that Substance Painter is easier and overall more powerful. That's the trade-off when using something free though, I suppose. Considering that Ucupaint is free, it can do a LOT 😁
As far as I'm aware you can manipulate the normal maps in any way you like as long as the normal channel is enabled. You can bake out individual maps as well 😁
Is there any chance to disable white effect that 'selection mask' button gives on other vertex group. Cause when i try to paint a character, im having problems with it. Example drawing shadows that needs to match with other face group (vertex group).
There's very likely a setting that lets you change the paint mask opacity, either in Ucupaint, the viewport somewhere, or in the interface options in Blender's preferences. Just can't think of where it is at this moment 😁
@@moltenbolt If its there, thats my job to find it so no problem 🤣But anyways, i have another huge problem.. Texture painting lags very much.. My pc specs are really good espacially the RAM and CPU, but its lagging somehow. Do you have any solution for it? Like i can't even make simple moves on the model.. On previous version of blender, there was a solution for it, and its so basic. Just using Texture Painting tab as a 'single tab' on viewport. But now, its not working either. There is a lot of questions and lot of answers on some forums that saying just disable BackFace Culling and Occlude, but its not working either man. So, do you have any solutions for it. And thanks for the answer tho.
So, no more tinkering with UV maps before painting? The UV maps are not a nightmare, but for me, it take quite a bit of time. BTW, it neat video with good info, explanation, and a bit of humor!
