    I love how Jacob can show respect for previous versions of a song while adding his own Jacob complexities and doing it all while being completely soulful and musical, not at all pretentious. I swear the rhythmic alteration at 1:15 is an homage to Jeff Buckley, it seems so intentional.

      Its a basic II-V-I (c#m9 - F - Bsus2). He got from c to c# through a shared third (e), the same way he got from f to f# (bars 45 to 46). :-)

    • @musicwithmatt6531
      @musicwithmatt6531 6 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Would also like to add that there's a brief period of tonal uncertainty from middle of bar 46 which makes the settling on to B major more satisfying.

    I really think this is one of my favorite arrangements of his because it’s just him on one vocal line and the piano. I really get the chance to analyze and appreciate the harmonic and melodic choices he goes for, and there’s a simplicity even to how he approaches the melody. It’s really beautiful with his “warm blanket” tone and the phrasing of it all as well.

    • @MrElectricNick
      @MrElectricNick 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I don't think it's minor fall as in falling in scale degrees, as the minor "fall" comes in on a 6 minor, right after the 5 major. I think it's a "fall" in mood, followed by a major "lift"

    The Stream Aid version is interesting and all, but it goes way too far and definitely loses the point of the original somewhere in all the absurdity. This is the one I always come back to, as it's doing something new and interesting with the song while staying relatively subtle and subdued. The melodic changes don't feel like runs for the sake of showing off, they actually fit the mood and refrain from going off the deep end. I especially love the vocal line after the key change at 2:43, it's different from the usual interpretations but maintains their beauty and simplicity. Even when he does do a vocal run or an unorthodox chord change, it's just a little flourish rather than going all over the place, and I think that's why it resonates with me so much more than his more recent take on it.

      TheMetatron333 what’s the best grainger for cool chords? I only know of him as an endless arranger of cheesy and jubilant folk songs. He was mega into sado masochism.

    EDIT: Actually, I think it might be what you wrote but with another G on top or maybe that's just the sustain?
    1:04 I think you meant to notate ADEG not GCD. I could be wrong but it sounds like ADEG in the right hand? @Harrison Steingueldoir

    Well! THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE HEARD SOMEONE SING THIS SONG WITH THE 'MEANING' OF THE WORD IN TACT!!! THANK YOU JACOB. Young people sing it and have no idea what it means. An incredible rendition. Your a lead of this time in authentic expression. Thank you.

    I hear a F# in the attack of the E Major chord at bar 50 (Emaj9 with no 7th; F# that goes to E). What do you think? Thank you so much for this impressive work anyway!

      Caramés Your ears are deceiving you. Bar 49 has an Esus2 and Bar 50 is just E major.

    Hi guys, a question for music geeks. What is the third chord at bar 21? Is it a Bb11/Ab (sub V/VI)? I'm studying classical harmony and I don't know too much about jazzy stuff

    • @pablovargas239
      @pablovargas239 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2
