Poakalani Hawaiian Quilts
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 17 พ.ย. 2011
If you love Hawaiian Quilts and Hawaiian Quilting these videos were made especially for you. The Poakalani Hawaiian Quilt Family are happy to share with you videos on how you also can learn and make your very own Hawaiian quilt. We also hope to share our Hawaiian quilting techniques, stories as well as highlighting some of the quilts made in the class and even some of the quilters. The art of hand sewing and quilting was taught by the Missionaries to the Hawaiians back in the 1820's and by the 1860's the Hawaiians were able to refine their skills and create what we recognize today as Hawaiian Quilts. They were able to create 1/8 designs, which opened up into beautiful symmetrical designs as well as sew the intricate echo quilting that flowed on the quilt. This design and quilting style is now a cherished and recognizable art form worldwide and the Poakalani family has been teaching Hawaiian Quilting for the last 40 years.
Pitt Rivers Museum Commission
In 2020 we were approached to commission several quilts for the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, England. Due to Covid the quilts took two years to finish and they were finally completed in 2022. This project helped me to reconnect with our class that is currently on hiatus and also to re-focus my attention to what really mattered most friendship and family. Thank you to all the quilters who were part of this project and those who wanted to be part of this project, when I say friendship and family I mean all of you. The quilts are beautiful.
Poakalani & Co has been teaching Hawaiian quilting since 1972 founded by Poakalani and John Serrao and now under the direction of their daughters Rae Correia and Cissy Serrao
Due to the pandemic the classes are on hiatus until a new venue can be found for the classes.

Thank you!!
Excellent tutorial, educational, beautifully calm and soothing. She is superb! Thank you. Irene
Why cant i download the patterns?
Theres no pattern to download
Thank you so so much for making these videos!! I’m just starting my sewing journey and this is my very first quilt pattern I will be trying my hand at.
I am going to try my hand at making a Hawaiian quilt hanging. Have my fabrics, a simple Ulu pattern, needles and threads, and hopefully enough courage to start!
Miss Cissy, I found you first when searching for this new activity and love your videos. I'm watching the needle turn applique now and was wondering if you ever use a contrasting color for the applique? Or is the traditional way to always use same color thread as the pattern?
Thank you, Cissy- this helpful thru your videos- knots in between layers and no markers- Thankvyou, thank you❤❤❤😊
Poakalana
Make a Hill, place, come with needle down, touch underneath, tiny under stitch, push up and rest -use Hoop and use thimble- takes time- one stitch at a time in beginning and eventually curve- slow in beginning with Poalakana
Start with needle makes a hill, thru 3 layers, tiny with stitch and come up and start again- use thimble
Thinner batting she said - not thick-
Use the hoop for quilting- a thin batting and use assorted needles with you feel comfortable to quilt- when started with the center design- around the edge of circle-
Hiw many threads do you start with applique sewing?
Thank you, Cicci - very kind
And you are the best teacher! Thank you!
Beautifully done kia Orana from the Cook Islands
Thank yoy😍
I’m so happy that I found you! I just got back from Oahu and took the Tues class Mary. I am SUCH a beginner and have much to learn but I am determined. Thanks for this so I can improve my skills.
I love your tutorials, and I’m ready to quilt my first Hawaiian quilt wall hanging, I’m wondering if a hoop is necessary? Or can it be stitched without one? The one I’m working on is 45 x 45.
Beautiful meticulous work. I’m going to try it on a small piece and see how I go.
Thank you. I was wondering about the term 1/8th pattern. You are a great instructor.
Do you (or any other viewers) have any recommendations for appliquing light fabrics on dark backgrounds so that the background fabric doesn't show through?
Thank you for your very clear tutorial!
Thank you for all your help. Getting old and want to leave my kids with quilts. Hawaiian quits seem the easiest.
Thank you so much for this wonderful video! I've seen pieces like this and I was always so impressed but at the same time couldn't imagine how hard it must be to make one. Now I know that sure, it needs time, practice and effort, but it's not impossible to learn and the result is so beautiful! I want to try this technique soon, now that I know more about it. Thank you for your help, explanations and encouragement ❤️
How could I use this process to make coasters? Is that even possible?
You are fantastic! Loved these 3 lessons!
You live so fareway from me but I found your quilts ❤❤❤ very good lesson.thank You!
I am trying to find a video that shows how to attach the back part of the pillow & the binding. I am making a Hawaiian quilted pillow to surprise a makua hānai who takes in many hanai on her own dime. She mentioned that she loves the pillows I made in the past, but it's been a while & I don't remember how I attached the back & binding. I kind of do, but since this is for someone else, I want to make sure it's perfect. Can you please direct me to a video that shows how to attach the back & the binding? Mahalo nui loa!!
Thank you. I just love your videos. I am hooked on Hawaiian quilting. I wish I would have known about this when I visited there 10 years ago. Aloha
Where do I find the pattern so I may print it?
Kia ora e hoa, thank you for this tutorial, your instructions are so clear!
Watched all three! Excellent series, thank you!
Excellent demonstration. Needle turn appliqué is the best way to make beautiful appliqué. I tried all the other “ modern techniques” using heat bonding, freezer wrap etc etc. needle turn wins, hands down. Thank you for keeping this skill alive.
❤ Thank you for your video I am going to try this technique. I have done two Hawaiian blocks so far but with a domestic sewing machine and the appliqué stitch that is very visible. I also love that you take your time in teaching us this beautiful art.
Hello, I have suddenly been pulled/called to work on hawaiian quilts. Your three videos found me very well. I have started my first quilt (a plumeria) and am enjoying the process so much (I finally made it to the quilting phase). I love how you said to have Aloha in your heart, I had to do some research and learn what exactly does aloha mean? And I came to find it's a whole lifestyle. It also lead me to Ho-aponopono which has been incredibly good for my state of mind. Thank you for sharing these gifts, they are far reaching.
Thank you! I’ve wanted to know how to do this for years.
Thank you for a wonderful video
Thanks a lot mam! From Tahiti!❤
Do you have a video doing the binding around the quilt
❤❤❤❤
This is the first of your videos that I've found. Wonderful instructions from a very charming teacher!!! 💕 I do have one question -- what size thread do you use? I can barely see it in the finished stitches, unlike my all-purpose thread, which really looks thick and distracting! (My preferred needle is a size 9 embroidery needle for hand piecing, and that's what I've used in trying to do a small amount of appliqué in the past, but my thread looks atrocious!) Thank you so much for your generosity of spirit in sharing your techniques -- I've really got to try this now! 💐🦋🍍
I have much more appreciation for hawaiian quilts
Very interesting, thank you! I’m reading a book about Hawaiian quilting and just had to check this out. Very good tutorial!
Thank you for showing how to end it first time out of several videos thank you again
Thank you so much for your tutorial … You’re such a good teacher ! Thanks to you I’ve just started a cushion …
Love your very encouraging tutorial!! Will definitely give it a try : ) 💕
Just bought the designs book from Ben Franklin, cant wait to start aunty!
I ended watching you and looking forward to watching more of your videos
oooh! This! This is what I was looking for. Thank you for your tutorials. The typical quilting patterns are so geometric and though very nice, they lack the organic look and feel wanted. This looks and feels like a real flower. I'm definitely going to try this out.
Hello!!! Thank you so much for teaching us about Hawaiian Quilting and Needle Turn Applique - you are a great teacher who presents very clear verbal instructions and great quality video instructions. Thank you again!
