    Great Job, I have a 250 gallon tank I am gonna start building into a smoker as well...I have a few questions if you don't mind....
    1. How big did you cut the opening between the firebox and the smoker body?
    2. How high off the ground is the wooden shelf in front of the smoker, want to judge the bottom of the door opening..
    3. How big did you make the reverse flow channel? I mean how far up from the bottom of the tank did you put the divider plate? and how high above that is the lower cooking grate?
    4. Last question, I like the use of the angle iron for the grease channel, but where does the grease run? does it run into the fire box or did you build a sump for it to collect in?
    Thanks in advance, gonna steal a bunch off of your design....

    That’s an awesome built. One criticize I have is it needs a Smoke release, a chimney, from the opposite side of the firebox on the smoker that’s just so when you are cooking and smoking the food the smoke can get circulated throughout the whole grill.

      i have a 250 gallon propane tank was needing help with measurements for the doors, fire box, and etc., do you sell blue prints?

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Anderson no I don't have or sell blue prints, as for the doors, just think it through I left about 4.5 inches between my doors to accommodate for the door flange and the 3+ inch thermometers. I cut the door opening at top center and then at horizontal center and allowed for the flange on the far left and right side so not to contact the factory tank weld. I would also weld my hinges on before finishing the door cut.... this will help to keep them positioned properly. Good Luck

    What size is your firebox? and how thick is the metal you used for the baffle inside the smoker

  • @nineball81007
    @nineball81007 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rob, I am building the same thing. Can I get the size of your doors and burn box please please. We cut the stack hole first and the burn box hole so we can slide in the baffle. My pipe for stack is 4.5 inch pipe. Do you have any problem with smoke passing threw? Also using a 2 in ball valve with a nipple on it for the airflow from burner box.

    I have a 24 width and 65 plus long might be 100 gallons air compressor that I want to turn into a reverse flow smoker. my question, does the location of the fire box have and effect on the heat. wanted to make my smoker look like the A-bomb little boy. that would require the fire box to be right in the center. will that effect my ability to get the heat to proper low and slow temperatures. your help is much appreciated.

    One more quick question, Is that fire brick you have lining the bottom of the firebox? What did you use to mount it in place?

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The firebrick on the bottom is just laid in there I have had no issues with moving around or bouncing out the fire brick on the side is held in by angle iron at the top with just enough spacing to replace it if I need to in the future

  • @justinsmith5400
    @justinsmith5400 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have another question for you Rob, how has the paint on the firebox held up? I bought the plate for mine today and was wondering if I should get another sheet for the top so it could have maybe an inch air gap. If yours is good then I wont bother. Also, how thick is the baffle plate in your cook chamber? Should I go with 1/4 inch or not? I just barely got the doors cut and will start to do some work on it next week. When I get more done I will try to post pictures.

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds great Justin The paint is holding up pretty good.... Creating a 1 inch gap wouldn't be the worst thing I'm not sure it would be necessary though... I use 10 gage for my baffle I think that's adequate

    If I may ask , What did you use for your stack and what is its diameter ?
    Im building a smoker 48" long and 36" in diameter and Im trying to figure out what to use

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Youu would won't to use a 6" pipe. You should have 36" sticking out of your cooker and make sure you run it down into the cooker to the lowest cooling surface.. I hope this helps good luck, and send pix ide love to see it!

  • @andresnacianceno2007

    The inside of the door of the firebox, what exactly did you do with it. How thick of steel did you use on the bottom inside the tank to make the smoke travel.

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andres Nacianceno
      Andres,
      On the inside of the firebox door I reinforced it with 2" channel, this is the one spot on the cooker that will warp if not properly built, on the inside of the tank i used 10 gauge although i think you could easily get away with lighter material

  • @bluesdog88
    @bluesdog88 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    WOW That is some awesome engineering Rob, getting married in 3 months, don't know how to weld but a friend does, what are the dimensions for the firebox? Also another friend can get a sheet of steel rolled to the required diameter i think, and they can send away to get a flat sheet domed do you remember the rough length of the body tube/dome ends please ;) I might be getting divorced in no time with one of these in the garage lol

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry it's 14" not 20" off the ground... No problem with it hitting the ground...

    • @dolamyte6380
      @dolamyte6380 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, I'm worried mine will be too low... My cook chamber is 30", my fire box is 30 inches tall, and will mount ten inches from the bottom of the chamber. With the handles about 38 inches from ground, that puts the bottom of my fire box at 8 inches from the ground (same as my axle) how high are your handles from the ground?

    Bad ass smoker I have a ? I got somewhat the same set up down to the thickness of the firebox what would you suggest to use to cut the ventilation in I don't want to buy a plasma cutter to use for 10 minutes for $700 just for that ????

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcus Jackson
      First of all THANKS for the complement!!
      If you are looking to cut the air intake to the firebox I'm a huge fan of 6" cutoff wheel on my 5" grinder... be careful!! if you are talking about the chimney probably a torch or as you said a plasma cutter ( you could possibly rent one?? ) go slow on this part don't over cut..... if you are placing your chimney at a similar location as I did its going to be an oblong hole... I cut a small piece of pipe off and used it as a template when I do this...
      I have also used the cut off wheel to cut round holes in the past just go slow and be careful!!

  • @justinsmith5400
    @justinsmith5400 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Rob, is there any way you would share the plans to that smoker? Mostly just measurements like the opening for firebox into chamber and the baffle plate inside the chamber. Does it have a slope for the drain? How high are the top grates and the size of them. Any help would be much appreciated.

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Justin Smith Hello Justin,
      Sorry I don't have detailed planes or blue prints for my smoker builds I just wing it mostly... if you search for a BBQ calculator on the Web it will help with planning your smoker out and answer a lot of questions you may have.
      as for the baffle i do have a slope in my big cooker with a channel to a drain but honestly most of the drippings just get burnt up on the baffle, id just put a plate in with a 1" drain in the center... skip the channel... I hope this helps!

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +meatdogg101 fishtailing is almost always caused by your axles being placed to close to the tongue of the trailer. Try to put more weight on the tong and see if that helps if not you need to rebalance the trailer moving the axle backwards will most likely solve your problem, good luck!!!

      That's awesome. About the cheapest you can find any new smoker on a trailer is over 4 grand, for one as large as you have there it's well over $6000. Really nice job.

    Looks great but, it seems like it would be kind of a pain getting to that top rack.

  • @CharlieNagoo

    The smokestack placement seems off. Does the heat and smoke draw through the smoker well?

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a reverse flow design the stack does not go into the firebox.

    • @CharlieNagoo
      @CharlieNagoo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know, but one would think the smokestack should go on the other end of the smoker, so the heat draws through the entire rack.

      Beautiful work, btw.

    • @AlphaRed5
      @AlphaRed5 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +CharlieNagoo It is a reverse flow design. There is a passage underneath the grill space where the smoke flows. The smoke goes from the box to the other side, then from the other side past the meat and into the chimney.

    Dose make a difference what side the smoker box go's on?

    • @day2day734
      @day2day734 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lucio Garcia no. Only key is having the stack on the proper side depending on what kind of smoker it is. “Regular flow” needs to be opposite of the fire box. Reverse flow should be on same side as fire box. Two totally different build aspects.
