- In this video I’m going to give you 7 tips to make your showreel stand out from the crowd, and make it easier to get hired.
This isn’t about how to create an amazing showreel. Look at mine. I can’t help you there. But I CAN help you avoid annoying people who might want to employ you.
This is based on things I’ve observed while looking at many, MANY reels and portfolios over the years. Even fantastic showreels sometimes inexplicably let themselves down with something basic.
Essentially it boils down to one thing, especially in an industry as crowded as ours is with amazing, talented folk: MAKE IT AS EASY AS POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO HIRE YOU

I have soooo much to learn...
You'll get there
I've only recently discovered this channel and I have to say it's really great. Thanks for all the great tips!
Thank you! And welcome!
Thank you for great tips! And for highlighting these inspiring motion designers
Oh yeah, they're pretty damn great
thank you!! pleased to see i'm already doing a couple of these and now have some helpful direction for my next showreel :)
Oh yeah, your portfolio is already pretty badass Elise
Very helpful! Well done man!
Thanks man!
What timing, I just cut mine last week.
I better clean up my god awful website too 😂
Just don't look at mine. Seeing other people's portfolios was a properly humbling experience
Just in time for me to send my showreel to a potential full-time job, before I've been working freelance only. Thank you so much for the tips!
Hope it helps and good luck with the job hunt!
@@TheVideoShopLondondoes showing that I value my clients still matter even if I'm not that person who is confident facing clients directly
very helpful
Thank you : )
Thank you for the video, very informative. How do you generally choose music for your reels? Do you buy a licence for particular pieces or do you just include the name of the song in the description? I saw some showreels with somewhat popular songs. How would you approach this if it was your first reel and you were starting your career?
obviously not OP but the typical advice i have seen is to avoid using music you don't have the right to use! Imo it looks somewhat unprofessional at best and at worst looks like you are unaware of copyright laws and like you may cause liability issues for your client.
@@eliseweiland3133 I just left an American electronic streaming service company that is big, but getting smaller. To make a long story short they would ask me to pull audio from TH-cam. I was shocked. They said what legal doesn't know, won't hurt them. That did not sit well with me. I was and am still disgusted with their attitude. It wasn't TH-cam or any of the big 10.
