Hi Mary, I'm in my 60s now , recently bought a Maton SRS808C Acoustic Guitar. I'm Australian so The Australian made Guitar seemed right. So glad I found your channel here. Like minded people connect here on TH-cam learning from each other. I especially enjoy your conversations with other Music minded folk. Now it's time for me to learn how to play this guitar..I had someone asking a survey in preparation for youtube . How do we know these surveys are from youtube. .back to listening now
weird: i seem to be the opposite of most ppl (in most categories). ex: i could easily produce BILLIONS of videos (every other musician and friend of mine says they can't keep up).....with NO EFFORT (ex: i'm mostly an improvising musician, on numerous instruments)......and yet TH-cam put Shadowbans on ALL my channels and videos! (ARGH!)
He's the only guy who makes being 58 cool! He got style and still can play at work. I'm impress that he took charge in educating his children, that's extremely admirable.
I think younger people may not realize how difficult it was to find information on just about anything before the internet. I (72 yrs.) had many interests as a child and youth and was always frustrated by the lack of information. TH-cam is an incredible resource.
@scott matthews Such anger! You must have been seriously harmed by your experience on the internet. My experience was that public libraries had little information available in the areas that interested me: magic, jazz, and filmmaking. I do not find that these areas (with the exception of magic, which was a childhood interest) are rife with the problems you describe. Perhaps if, say, politics were the area of research, I might agree with you. And I don't understand why reading an article or watching a video presentation on TH-cam is stupid and lazy compared with going to the library, finding a book and reading it. Does the fact that a process is easier and more effective make its use "stupid and lazy"? I would think that, on the contrary, not choosing the more effective approach would be stupid.
Yeah prior to the mid to late 1990s books and vhs tapes cassette tapes dvds or taking school classes were only way to learn. Now EVERYTHING is online in pocket or screen..
The internet is but youtube isn't because it's filled with spam and new age degenerates gloryfied by YT itself labeled as creators even tho they don't do nothing just copy-paste pointless toxic talk in front of a camera or hiding behind a gameplay video that also probably isn't theirs.
I love Rick’s ‘what makes this song great’ series. Breaking down how these amazing tracks are recorded and built up is just amazing. His studio looks amazing in this video. Almost like he’s superimposed into it!
It's a great series and it's honestly amazing even for songs like 'What's My Age Again?' by Blink-182. I'm sure they didn't go into nearly the detail when writing it lol, but it's still neat to see him break it down, especially with how he isolates the tracks.
Yeah, through the time, the "production value" of his videos really got to the next level. I can really appreciate it and I know how much thought and work was put into it to look like that.
Yea as far as his really nice studio, nothing is ever out of place, maybe it is a green screened background and he has even commented that people think so, and he said "it's real". Maybe Mary should have asked that question. I would believe him if he walked to the back of the room, picked up one of those Marshalls and brought it to the camera. Just as in this video, HE REACHES OFF SCREEN TO GET HIS GIBSON, He didn't walk over and pull it out of the rack of guitars behind him. Peculiar.
@@51MontyPython Wasn't trying to insinuate that he doesn't have all these wonderful pieces of equipment, you said "Almost like he’s superimposed into it!" Could be that maybe he just isn't actually videoing in his studio.
Exactly... Mary, you are a great conversationalist. Really natural and a flow to the interaction and conversation. Beautiful stuff... I really like how you allow Rick to answer each question in his own way. Very relaxed, free , yet focused. Really well done. Great questions.
Rick is a TH-camr who went to a music school, paid attention in his theory classes and has *some* experience in bands/production. I'm glad he found an audience, but don't be dazzled about his *Tales Of The Industry Days* . I was actually living in the same city at the time he claims to have been "courted by labels, been through the whole wringer" etc. Not a *single* one of my old friends from the '90s scene has ever heard of him. He's a Music Fan who went to Industry School and worked with some suburban metal bands. These "Music TH-cam Influencers" are in a feedback loop. You'd do well to not get drawn in. There are plenty of actual big, legendary producers out there with a ton of experience to learn from here on TH-cam. The difference is, you have to find them, and they're generally not the ones making a video every week or so, and trying to hustle you to sign up and pay for some online courses because they worked with fucking "Stuck Mojo," lol. Never pay to play. And if you're gonna pay to learn, do yourself a favor and spend your money well.
He made a "WMTSG" video the other day and said, "This band had two studio bass players on this record and the credits aren't specific but you can tell this is XXX XXX playing because it's definitely a Music Man bass tuned down to B and XXX XXX started playing Music Mans in 19XX." My chin was on the floor. And Rollo, yeah whatever, dude LOL. If you watch when HE interviews someone like Peter Frampton or Eric Johnson, you see that he is very smart and very humble. When he is dissecting a guitar riff and he says, "Here, I'll TRY to play along so you can hear it" then he nails it every time. Don't be jellie, bro.
I love having someone so knowledgeable about music theory, composition, and music production sharing all this stuff on TH-cam. He is also such a positive guy who is so easy to watch and learn from.
I learned about your channel by listening to Rick's, so now I am catching up with your programs and thoroughly enjoying your content. Thanks for this "peek under the tent"! You are both delightfully interesting people in additional to being conspicuously talented musicians/educators! Not a musician myself, just a lover of music- you both have expended my appreciation of this wonderful art form!
When someone says "music is my life" they can only aspire to mean it the way Rick Beato does. He seems like the kind of person for whom musicality is breathing: second-nature.
As a musician, it's really hard to have an instrument in front of you and not fiddle around with it. In conversations, it can actually help the musical think and relax, not that I think Rick needs that.
It's a thing called "indulging yourself." Rick has earned the right to do whatever he likes - and you can usually trust him to do something cool. Rick and Mary are both musical gurus for millions of people; they both are music-lovers who have made music their life and by sharing that joy they spread the joy of music to others. Rick is like an older sensei visiting and hanging with a youner teacher; I suspect that he's thrilled. I think that they're stars of the new music business, because radio doesn't spread the joy of music anymore; it's basically just an advertising medium(and much of the music IS adverts) and mostly horrid crap that doesn't affect you in a positive way, like music does. These collaboration videos are long, but full of joy; see them all, if you can. Enjoy it with a beverage(or a color-tini) if you like. Fortune passes everywhere.
For me, messing around with a keyboard or even a pen or something like that helps with anxiety when I'm talking to someone. I'm sure Rick isn't nearly as anxious as I am (I have social anxiety), but that's what I thought it could be
Rick Beato's immense knowledge of all things music is just out of this world. It boggles the mind, how someone can reach such a stratospheric level of understanding. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
As a nurse, I appreciate what y’all do so much. It’s a nice way to escape and enjoy other peoples creativity. Funny thing, found your channel from Ricks channel.
So great to see two people you follow independently coming together in a video (and having a killer conversation). ...And how come this looks and sounds AMAZING, when the late night at-home talk shows during these days of the Virus, with entire broadcast budgets behind them, are so shitty? Kudos to the quality here!
Wonderful interview, Mary. I am a retired teacher, and I feel fellowship. Both of you are terrific educators. I learned a lot today. The discussion about TH-cam was especially fascinating. Thank you both! 👍👍
It's always great listening to the experiences of the experts who have been a part of the music industry and has and still making their contribution in this field. Also listening to the younger generations and their experiences , really liked it . Thanks Mary for doing this interview.
I love Rick! .... learned so much on theory and music production/construction watching his videos on here. I love how he isolates tracks and shows me parts of my favorite songs and bands! The “what makes this song great” series is so awesome. How he isolates each track and always shows you something you didn’t know about the song is the best. Dude knows what’s up to say the least.
8:29 "YOU are ultimately responsible for your kids education!" Couldn't agree more and I did try my best and both of my twins did well at university and are doing very well in life.
my son is 21 and substantially responsible for his own educational choices now. I do what I can to support his choices and help him make appropriate ones.
Two of my favorite TH-cam channels combined to one video! Doesn't get any better than this. I have learned so much from both Rick Beato and Mary Spender. I don't know if they fully realize just how much we appreciate them.
Mary, Rick: thank you for this discussion. It's a fine line we parents walk to encourage musical study to our children. I was fortunate to be the youngest of five kids (who were all musical) so the importance of music was ingrained from a very young age. My own son (as an only child) didn't have the advantage of siblings to model...he had to get encouragement from me and his teachers at school. Ultimately, he embraced percussion, but the journey was multifaceted and not always promising. Perseverance helped. If there's one piece of advice I would suggest, it is to encourage a chordal instrument first (piano or guitar) as it's more difficult to appreciate music theory otherwise. Thanks again for your insights!
Mary you are fabulous! You and Rick together in this video was a great listen. The knowledge the both of you bring to the table is extremely enlightening for us to novices. Great job to the both of you!
This interview had such a pleasant and peaceful vibe to it. The respect the two have for each other shows in the overall vibe of the talk. This video absolutely lifted my mood. Thanks a lot Mary.
I failed to learn several instruments until lockdown when I took up ukulele, I'm still not sure I'm doing more than playing "with" my instrument but I'm taking it more seriously and enjoying it a lot more.
That’s awesome, man! Having fun is honestly the most important thing. I know that sounds canned but it’s true. There was a point where I feigned interest in guitar and you could hear it my songs… so focused more on piano, drums or leaning something new and then I found my guitar love renewed
So well done Mary thank you. You and Rick should talk more about the basics of what we are all going through. First time connection to a community. I didn’t even know I could tap into. Thank you so much for it Mary. And you too Rick Without you, I wouldn’t know Mary. And that would be a miss More please!❤
Two of my favorites in one place. I've gone to Rick's channel a lot for musical insight, being a music major myself, and your channel for your lovely voice and creativity. I'm so happy two of my favorite musical TH-camrs could be found on one video.
Hi Mary, I know this is almost a year old but it was worth saying that your message of don't give up is important. I was told when I started that I was tone deaf, wouldn't be able to play anything..... (thanks mum) but I stayed with it. Not going to change the world, but as a lead in a band enjoying the musical journey it has been amazing. Your message of working through the "failures" sums up being a musician to me.
I was always surrounded by music when I little. Dad bought a guitar when I was 5 or 6, he showed a few chords. He discovered I had perfect pitch and made listen to all of his records and show him how to play the songs. I learned new chords thanks to my perfect pitch. I'm 44 years old and I still have it. Music is my life. Great interview. 😎👍
This is SO inspiring and wonderfully human... I've just recently started trying to get a semi-regular, specific-content upload schedule going on my channel, and the bit where you talked about the kind of emptiness you feel as soon as you upload and it's done is such an odd and relatable sensation. To know that even you guys get that helps me feel like it's not because of anything I'm doing wrong, so thank you 🙏
Oh how I wish TH-cam was around 40 years ago, it is probably the greatest source of information and education that has ever existed. I started out using it to find old videos of old bands that I loved back in the day, and I was constantly surprised about what gems existed. Then about 18 months ago I started my own photography channel, with mixed success, and have taken a lot more notice of all the other stuff out there. I came across Rick early on, and he has led me to so many others like Rhett, Tim Pierce, and now you. I've loved the way Rock interviews other people, no ego, just a deep love for the subjects he talks about, and I must say that you have the same talent for that, more power to you. You managed to ask Rick so many original questions, that led into some really wonderful stories and insights, how much preparation did you put into that?
When I discovered Rick Beato on TH-cam his channel quickly became my number one. Thank you for this interview/chat, which provides a different and fascinating view of one of the most interesting personalities on the platform. Plus, a trademark Beato Story! Bonus!
I really felt the comments you made, they are so true, thanks Mary. I swear your my inspiration these days to keep going. I admire and adore your attitude and outlook. (26m)
Mary, Rick's channel is great, but at 65, I keep coming back to you! You are beautiful, smart, very talented and have helped me understand creating music in an entirely different way. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, joy and attitudes about music and the "biz", though I think that is changing very rapidly. Keep going!
Great interview with an outstanding teacher/mentor to many of us. I have followed Rick for a while now and learn something new every time. You have a very engaging interview style Mary and the camera loves you. A lot of good things ahead. Cheers!
This was a treat for me. Rick and you, (yes you Mary) were the first two creators on TH-cam that I SUBSCRIBED to. Not sure who was first! It's so cool to see the two of you here exchanging ideas, memories and opinions. This one definitely goes in my list of FAVORITES. As an aside, I believe that TH-cam is best utilized as an educational / informational resource. Then comes a lot of great entertainment.
I’m so glad I subbed to your channel Mary, if for this one Tuesday Talk alone. I’ve been watching, listening and learning from Rick for years now and only found your channel a couple of months ago. Love your music and videos . You were definitely the perfect person to interview this TH-cam music legend. Folks like you and Rick are keeping the music alive and relevant in a time of chaotic change.
28:50 TH-cam meet people. I definitly agree 100%. I from Brazil and youtube give me the chance to be conected with guitarist from New zeland, England, US, spanish end etc. Mary you Rock😎👏🏿
Hello Mary, I loved your banter with Rick, especially one of your comments about 'Living in the moment'. That is really good advice for everyone, but also for musicians that get fixated on their past being better. We grow, we learn, we listen, we do. Thank you again. 🎸👍😎
Really enjoyed this conversation. Loved hear both your thoughts on TH-cam and other platforms and how you got started. Really good stuff from. Both of you. I’m a forever beginner at guitar 🎸. I hope I get better watching people like yourselves. Thank you in advance.
I remember watching Rick's channel when he only had a few thousand subscribers and I knew there was something special about it. Now he's approaching a million and a half! It's fun seeing him being interviewed, great job.
My mind is slightly blown! Your rise as an influencer has been so incredible to see since we last met and now you're interviewing Rick. AMAZING, more power to both sets of elbows involved in this video!
Hey Mary - love your channel - I was a peripatetic clarinet/flute/saxophone teacher in the Salisbury Cathedral School in the late 70s. We have walked the same corridors :-) All the best.
Just started watching these, and trying to get caught up, guess thats the bright side of the current situation of things. However time just flew by with these interviews. Thanks Mary!!
It seems like I feel envy as I listen to you talk Rick, but in reality you always peak my motivation to never stop learning. I feel lucky that having started my musical journey at 13 and actually picking up a guitar at 15, that at 63 I still have the same drive, and your channel keeps that drive at full bore, in other words, thanks for being a great teacher. Thank you Rick. 😁
'Love this. I enjoy both of you. I really feel that I could contribute something to these conversations. There are so many topics here that I can relate to (as, I'm sure many others do). Anyway, thanks.
This is SO great! 2 of my favorite YOWTube channel stars and music personalities. Thank you, BOTH of you, for all the joy - and extremely useful knowledge - you've brought to me, these past few years. Good Fortune attend you both - always.
Mary, you are a warm and special musician, congratulations on a fascinating interview with the incredible Rick Beato, kindest regards from the snowy mountains of Norway, Alexander.
Around 21:00, you two begin the production dread discussion. For myself as a tiny channel creator, it was good to hear the honesty and that I'm not alone. Yours and Rick's videos seem so effortless which I know is practice and hard work (carryover from musical training). I thoroughly enjoyed the entire video, thank you from Colorado.
Interestingly I subscribed to you and Rick in the space of a few weeks. Am blown away with all of your collective knowledge. I took up acoustic guitar so late in life although I listened to all the great bands in the 70's 80's and 90's. No idea of music theory and have to learn to play songs on the guitar with Tab, but both of you have inspired me to start practising again after years of doing nothing. Thanks for that!
I don't think I have ever seen Rick so indecisive and nervous about what he wanted to say. It was really good seeing him on the edge;) Good, tough questions Mary!
This was so cool! The interviewer gets interviewed…I learned about you from Rick’s channel so what goes around… I’ve been enjoying your music and videos thanks to Rick and his channel. I guess it’s going to be my turn soon. Ha!
I missed tuesday talks, i'm not a musician, so the gear talk goes over my head a lot, but Rick and you are two of my favorite music channels... (next ya gotta track down the 12-tone guy :) )
I like this young lady!!! She does her research and she is a fellow musician!! I have just seen two of her videos and I am impressed! Now I have subscribed!! I like that she is sponsored by a company that helps promote your own music and takes care of your royalties and publishing rights!! Thumbs up to Mary!!! Oh and by the way I love her accent and she is very easy on the eyes in other words a very beautiful young woman!!
Its Sunday, house is cleaned and organized, groceries delivered with alcohol so I will sit back and watch my guiding lights on youtube. A lot of people look up to your content, keep it coming. Your insight, life experience, industry knowledge, musical application(we are like vampires on this). Your honesty made me feel humble and not alone. PS find it hard to watch TV when youtube content is so specific for one's needs. More power to TH-cam and more information for us!

And you too Rick
Without you, I wouldn’t know Mary.
And that would be a miss
More please!❤
we're very fortunate to have access to this stuff truly
I absolutely loved this interview. Great respect shown for each other & you are a real gem, Mary.
Great interview! I think we learned as much about Mary as we did about Rick and music. Thank you for the video.
Mary your guys comments are just how I found you. Your latest Ren talk. Loving your stuff so far and liking your honesty. Amazing stuff ❤
This is SO inspiring and wonderfully human... I've just recently started trying to get a semi-regular, specific-content upload schedule going on my channel, and the bit where you talked about the kind of emptiness you feel as soon as you upload and it's done is such an odd and relatable sensation. To know that even you guys get that helps me feel like it's not because of anything I'm doing wrong, so thank you 🙏
This is great Mary. Will save this for later. Series 2 is really a great step forward. Well done.
Rick Beato is such an amazing musician.
It blows my mind how he can pick up a guitar, bass or play keys and do it flawlessly.
Love all the collabs going on in the youtube music community. Keep up the great work, Mary
Really good interview with Rick Beato. Thank you for producing it.
I apologize for watching this so late, Mary. Brilliant interview as I have been a Beato Boi for a few years. Thanks so much and Happy Christmas!
*I like her! 😉👍 Love a strong, classy, witty British woman! Subscribed! 😎🤘 Rock on, Girl!*
What a great conversation. Good job Spender!
Thanks for making the effort to properly record this! I find it the usual SKYPE interviews VERY irritating because the audio is usually terrible! :-)
You are doing a fantastic job Mary. I feel engaged and inspired...... Enough said.
When I discovered Rick Beato on TH-cam his channel quickly became my number one. Thank you for this interview/chat, which provides a different and fascinating view of one of the most interesting personalities on the platform. Plus, a trademark Beato Story! Bonus!
Thank you so much, Mary. I’ve just discovered Rick Beato, and I can’t stop watching him! Now I’m booing to start watching you!
Learning that Rick also watches some of my favourite non music related channels feels pretty cool. Shows the reach some of you TH-camrs have!
These interviews are really a conversation that really help me. I love them. Good work Mary!
Later, I'm glad you guys got together, played and talked about the greats!
You have such a soothing voice🙂
I really felt the comments you made, they are so true, thanks Mary. I swear your my inspiration these days to keep going. I admire and adore your attitude and outlook. (26m)
What a great interview with Rick! Awesome!
Keep going!
Rick Beato is a prince of a guy. Great conversation here. Thanks.
Great interview with an outstanding teacher/mentor to many of us. I have followed Rick for a while now and learn something new every time. You have a very engaging interview style Mary and the camera loves you. A lot of good things ahead.
Cheers!
Good job Mary. Through Rick is how I found you.
Everyone needs to find you!
Just love Rick Beato he such a good soul =) Love cheers
Great interview, Mary! Very engaging!
I just like the way Mary says the word "year."
I could listen to Mary read a phone book
I could too. Lol
I appreciate the hard work you do in making your videos. They are very valuable!
That was wonderful and inspiring. Thank you for doing these interviews.
Hello Mary, I loved your banter with Rick, especially one of your comments about 'Living in the moment'. That is really good advice for everyone, but also for musicians that get fixated on their past being better. We grow, we learn, we listen, we do. Thank you again. 🎸👍😎
Rick Beato AND Mary SPENDAAHH
😊❤
Really enjoyed this conversation. Loved hear both your thoughts on TH-cam and other platforms and how you got started. Really good stuff from. Both of you. I’m a forever beginner at guitar 🎸. I hope I get better watching people like yourselves. Thank you in advance.
Two of my favorite channels.
I love Rick Beato great teacher, Mary I love what you do ,you are a great inspiration keep it going!!!!!!!
I love Rick and his channel!
That was a great interview Mary.
Oh wow. Just discovered you through IEM vid and now see you interview Rick who I've loved to follow for such a long time. Thank you for this Mary
Two of my favorite TH-camrs! +rickbeato +maryspender Love you guys!
Rick is great! And so are you! Thanks Mary!
great interview, Rick is a great source of knowledge and entertainment, thank you!
Your videos always have such a warm positive vibe! You truly are so inspiring to me!
Rick's a real character with a great channel!
Awesome sit down. Finally I can hear your real “radio voice”. You sound amazing.
Loved every single minute of this.
Hence, the name “TH-cam”. You guys nailed the essence of what TH-cam is...tv for you, yourself.
I don't think I have ever seen Rick so indecisive and nervous about what he wanted to say. It was really good seeing him on the edge;) Good, tough questions Mary!
Mary Spender, you are such a charming lovely youtuber, I love your accent and your unpretentious honesty. Keep making great videos
She comes off as very honest and sharing and gaining knowledge with the overkill of con and scam that exists today she's a breath of fresh air
What accent? :)
I love her music videos when she is on the beach, looks similar to where I am.
Best interview you have done.. Thanks
This was so cool! The interviewer gets interviewed…I learned about you from Rick’s channel so what goes around…
I’ve been enjoying your music and videos thanks to Rick and his channel. I guess it’s going to be my turn soon. Ha!
I missed tuesday talks, i'm not a musician, so the gear talk goes over my head a lot, but Rick and you are two of my favorite music channels... (next ya gotta track down the 12-tone guy :) )
Great job Mary! I'm used to seeing Rick interviewing!
His thoughts on parental responsibility are SPOT ON.
Great Podcast , Honest and Heartfelt ❤️❤️
Absolutely. Both of you, please don't stop.
