John continues to prove that he is one of, if not the most, diverse musicians of our era. From acoustic ballads to face melting blues solos to Grateful Dead to 80’s pop. He can do it all and we are lucky we get to experience it.

I'm 43 years old and I've literally spent my adult life growing up to John Mayer's music. What's so amazing to me is that his style has evolved along with my own tastes. He's as close to a musical prodigy as I've ever seen.
Your version is brilliant as well. How epic would it be to have John bring you on stage to sing yours someday lol.
Props to John Mayer for being "cool" with this whole process. The way he reacted in my opinion is top notch. Props to you Mary for jumping in with both feet and having some obvious fun with developing a concept while doing it in such a way as to not telegraph disrespect. If more people "collaborated" this way across all disciplines the world would be a better place.

Exactly what I thought as soon as I heard it. The guitar phrasing is very reminiscent.
Looking back at this now, it helped to provide huge publicity for him, and let's face it, your prediction is as close musically as you can get to fan fiction. Far better than covers because you documented the process of knowing his style and music, rather than copy. The ultimate mark of a true fan. Not only that, your version is actually very credible, well produced, even with a good stab at the video. This will be making smile watching back for a long time. Great job, Mary.

I saw that video from NAMM a few weeks ago, and heard some girl off camera asking about female guitar players... both John and Paul dodged the question a bit, but I wondered and commented if that girls was Mary. I didn’t know until this video that it was indeed! Very cool story arc. I’m so happy to be able to see it unfold.

I love this for so many reasons. The fact John recognized you in your experiment with a great attitude I find this just touching and refreshing. I dont want to mention names (have two bands in mind atm) but other groups could of had a way negative reaction to you posting the experiment as they are still finishing their song. I’m saying, that bridge “I’m not a fallen angel” is so addictive and where it leads to the chorus is like a refreshing feeling to my ears.
The fact this happened just makes me smile. I mean a big sh*t eating grin. Ear to ear. This is just great. I think John REALLY appreciated the exercise of taking a small portion of someone else's song, one you haven't heard completely and aren't influenced by and making it your own. It's a great way to train yourself in songwriting and composition. I think John really admired the guts it took to try this and share it with the world. You got this response because #1 Your version was great too #2 John's a great guy and #3 You impressed him. Congrats. That's a story to take with you forever.

One of the cooler things I've seen like this was when Linkin Park was gearing up to release A Thousand Suns, they did a remix contest for The Catalyst where only small snippets of various stems were provided and there was no explanation of how they fit together in the context of the song. It was so fun to hear everyone's interpretations of how the song might sound or how it could be twisted into another genre or another form, all without having the bias of hearing the original in full. Pinegrove did something with their last album where they posted the chords and lyrics and asked people to cover the songs, weeks before they were actually released, which was cool too.
