chin up, vitamin C and coke might help? from a retired NYC rocker. sushi and fresh fruit, lay off the red meat. Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat Tea. Elderberry + B12. Lots of water. Best Wishes.
Ken Burns did a documentary about country music, and the grueling schedule those people faced those decades ago before jetliners were a thing. Of course, even now those who have small acts don't get to be flown around. Some friends of mine where in a band, and it is a shame that interpersonal conflict got in the way because they were truly talented. There was a band playing at the same bar, one that later met with success, but at that time it was not at all guaranteed. I grew up in California, and as such was not unaware how heartless the entertainment industry is, but nonetheless it as a shock to me that these guys are traveling around in an old Dodge van with their gear who are lucky if they get to sleep in a flea bag motel but more often sleep in the van itself when their manager shows up in a Jaguar (likely from the best hotel in town), hugging them and saying how much he loves them. So many show business people are so phony. I hope you are at least planning your touring route efficiently. One thing that got Buddy Holly all those decades ago is that they were zig zagging across a number of states across the upper midwest rather than going to nearby cities in an arranged way. This ran them ragged, many of them were ill from all that, and led to the pressured decision to fly in inclement weather when they should not have.
One the hazards of self funding a tour is living on the edge of bankruptcy!! Top it all off with the stressors or running it all and then getting sick is a true test! Add recording it, editing it and uploading it and has to be a really big load to carry!! Your efforts really are appreciated Mary. Thank you for doing what you do in every aspect. ❤
JohnnyTorontoEh sums it up exactly! Please do take care of yourself! It would be great if you could do some dates on the other side of the "Pond" but, with all the work you have to do so far, it would seem an even bigger stressful situation to do that.
Mary this series is just brilliant. The best thing you've ever produced and you've produced incredible content. Your skills as a storyteller, artist, videographer, producer, and of course PERFORMER are all PEAK.
Your intros to all these tour vids, where you give info about the town you're currently in, makes me realise how much I'd love to see a TV series which is you doing a travelog style show of going to a town and going in to the history of it, what it's famous for, it's environment, musical history notes and notable venues and their history etc which then ends up with a clip of a song or section of a song from a gig you performed in that town. it's likely a pipe dream but it's a show I'd watch as I've been learning about places from here but I want more and there is also something way too soothing about your voice.
Mary, this series you created is so enticing. I sit and wait for each episode, and just marvel at your talent and charisma, and the band’s as well. Thank you for what you do!
Mary... You are human... you are allowed to be tired, sick, and/or unfocused. I know you don't have a minute for yourself... but find a second - here and there - and breathe in the magic you create. Feel the music in you, and let it fill your heart and soul. You're good, you're great, you're awesome! The tour is the tour. You are Mary and so much bigger than any tour.
You speak as it should not be stressful somehow because this is not a "big" tour. But it's a big tour if you haven't toured before. And if it were a "big" tour, there would be people who would be taking care of many of the little details that you are concerned that you are missing / overlooking - that would be their job, So being stressed was probably inevitable, and being sick was likewise probably going to happen. I'm glad that it didn't seem to knock you down (or at least that you got back up again...). Thank you for sharing these vlogs - it's so amazing to participate virtually, especially from across the pond, and to get to hear your thoughts on how things are going.
Gosh! you hid your illness in Glasgow quite well. I was in the front row and you looked and sounded great. And afterwards talking to all of us, with me still acting like a fanboy, and posing for photos. ❤️
This shows what separates the people that like what they do from those that love what they do. You have to love your journey to fulfill your life's passion, even though a majority of the time, it sucks. Especially what you are doing, self funded, and you are the literal corporation, and the human glue to keep going and make it successfull. Keep it up, if it's hard, then you know you're on the right path. If it was easy, we could all do it, instead of just dreaming of it and living vicariously through you! ❤
So glad my in my limited touring experience I was just the guitarist and our drummer/ manager (who actually lived for that management part of the job) dealt with everything else. To be the musical leader, singer, guitarist, and manager…no wonder you are a bit overwhelmed! Just love those times on stage and live in those moments! All the best… 🎸
So here’s the thing, when bands go on tour in the cosy world of studio management, you don’t have to do the VLOG, accounts, washing, packing, setup etc etc. Shoestring is the toughest way to do anything and this sure looks it. Well done for sticking with it. Those two hours mean so much for the people in the audience, so thanks for all the entertainment. ❤
Hello Mary, I just wanted to send a quick note to encourage you to stay focused and keep giving your best during your tour. You've worked hard to get where you are, and your dedication shows in everything you do. However, don't forget that maintaining psychological balance is just as important as achieving your goals. Make sure to take moments for yourself, breathe deeply, and stay grounded. Rest and self-care are not signs of weakness, but essential elements to sustaining your strength and creativity. Remember, it's not just about reaching the finish line, but also about enjoying the journey along the way. Your mental well-being is the foundation that will support your success. Keep going, stay positive, and know that you have everything it takes to handle both the challenges and the triumphs ahead. Take care, and keep shining! Creating from Brazil!
Mary no excuses. You are human. And a talented human at that. Your run down. Push forward and this “not wellness” becomes another story and memory when you and ur friends sit back in a pub and smile and laugh
Mary you are so entitled to feel unwell once in a while. For all you do and all the ends of the candles burnt , for all the great music and mentoring...you also need to take time for yourself. Hugs
Hope you can keep the illness at bay and overcome the overwhelming stress of all things touring. I gave it up a decade ago because my health was suffering all the time. Hats off to you.
LEEEEEDDDSSSSSS, the Brudenell club is a venue which I love to support and have done over the years and should be treasured as its helped so many local bands including the English teacher who name checked the owners in their speeches after winning the Mercury prize. Mary this series is amazing!!!!!
Thank you, Mary, for sharing the downsides of touring and the emotional and physical toll on you. Your focus on the performances will probably more than balance any problems arising from not focusing other things. That was the first time I have ever had a view of Leeds, although it seems everyone has a "Live at Leeds" album. Cheering for you for the rest of the tour to go smashingly well.
I was lucky enough to see you at The Brude and I didn't realise you were feeling under the weather, it certainly didn't show in the performance. I have to say the point about touring being gruelling really is so very true. I toured a lot in the late 80's and early 90's (inc playing Brudenell many times) and you do end up in that weird bubble separated from reality. Touring is not for everyone either. I admit I loved it, loved every second but it took its toll of some of my bandmates but we were too caught up in the music and of course the constant partying back then (no internet to distract us from the fun!) to notice. But we all survived. Just!
I wish you the Best of Luck on your remaining shows, Mary! It was nice you could get a replacement guitar shipped to you. It must be great to have bandmates you can rely on!
This is one of the most honest videos I've seen by anyone on TH-cam. The depth of emotion was written all over your face and could be heard in your voice. Hang in there, you're doing good shows, I'm sure. Don't be so hard on yourself. Not that you need to listen to anything I say, you know what you're doing, but please have faith in yourself and your talent.
Thank you Mary! You certainly live by the adage: It's not how you feel but what you do that counts. Yeah.... The show literally and figuratively, must go on. That's how life is for every living being and organism. The human spirit is INDOMITABLE, so we'll demonstrated in the classic GRAPES OF WRATH. YA, YA I know I digress.... abject apology! You are indeed a force to reckon with :beauty, brain and talent. You GO GIRL!!!!
Once again, Mary, I'm really enjoying this series. :) We all know what it is like to not feel good. That's when the survivors carry on. Adversity strengthens or diminishes an individual. I hope the numbers don't wreck it for you and the rest of the group. :)
Mary, those challenges, whether overcome or just experienced, are what makes life so rich and full. The memories shared and the lessons learned are developmental. No matter; you sound great, look great, and you're living the dream. Head on, little sister! Thanks for sharing.
Such an honest reflective vlog. I don't know if statistics exist for this but my passion for mixing, recording, photography, being a Hobby musician has led me to befriending at least 20 individuals who were either Professional solo Artists or part of a Band for 30+ years but only one of the 20 now enjoys a decent Pension and a standard of living that allows them to enjoy retirement along with several high quality Guitars, home studio recording gear, cameras camcorders and want for nothing and that one person is the one who chose a career in I.T. Technical support instead of the performing arts. Sadly many of those I befriended have since died of poor lifestyle choices and rigors of playing and touring year in year out before reaching retirement age and those that have since reached that age have had to find part time jobs just to survive, never mind enjoy the good life. Making a living from Music that will also provide a decent standard of living once retirement age is something many may never think of until its too late. Hope your feeling much better soon and look after yourself.
I hope you heal up very quickly. The stress is one of those things that can keep you ill longer. But you have got this Mary. I'm so happy you have your guitar sorted for now. Get rest as you can. Don't deny yourself a hood nights sleep. Things always work out in the end.
Loved seeing you with the lovely Mark Hetherington as part of the team! We loved the gig. Thanks for your openness about just how hard you work. The Brudenell is a real treasure. Please come back again! Vlog has been fantastic. Ps no idea you had a cold. Album is a real treat but you are better live.
it's a big tour these are big challenges but they were challenges laid out before a considerable mind and talent. the smart money will always be on Mary Spender.
I absolute love watching these tour videos. The honesty, the editing, the music...outstanding. I feel like we're there with you, Mary. You've really captured something quite special. Just terrific work.
As I stated previous times. 1. Sleep and Rest - No matter what! Especially since you are the focal point of this fantastic tour. 2. Thank god for Tom ! What a guy and what venue, you got so lucky gal. Except for the cold, But you can finish the tour on top once again giving us what we all want you and your music. Keep on pluckin

If I ever get my band on tour, you’ve inspired me to at least try to film it and post it, in some similar way to what you’ve done. Cheers! Don’t stop now.
I hope you feel better soon Mary. I remember working in Leeds about 10 years ago. I liked the city. Sorry about what happened with your guitar. The new guitar looks good too!
So, I've been watching your videos for about a year now. I think you're a great musician and song writer. But, I've been racking my brain trying to think of why you look so familiar. I finally got it. You look just like Barbara Feldon from the TV series Get Smart.
Thank you Mary for being you. Sick or healthy, we love. You truly inspire me personally. Only because, once, we met. Forgive me for not pointing out when. I only wish to say; Thank you for helping me see the best in what we as humans offer this world, peace and joy through escape through music. I am inspired by the faith you show through your love in music. You truly shine in my eyes for the source above. Thank Mary❤
That's wonderful that you got another Lovemaker. I may or may not be partial to the current replacement, due to the styling with the flat black...... lol
So sorry to hear about the 'challenges'. I sincerely wish there was something I could do. Figured that I could pray for you at the very least (even though this is over and done). Take care of you and the rest gets a bit easier.
Looks like you're going to be feeling better, and I doubt you'll have any "bad" shows. Keep on strummin'. Best of times to you and your band mates! Looks like FUN! Don't worry... paydays will keep on coming too!

Yes, they can be memories to last a lifetime for an audience member! I went to see All About Eve in Leeds 30+ years ago, still remember that night.

I love your honest reporting of the challenges in this industry both for youtubers, and for touring. It is eye opening!
Mary, hats off to your photographer, you always looks so beautiful in your photos.
Thanks

Oh man, I feel for you. Nothing like being elbow deep in a project and then finding out mid way through that something has escaped you.
Hope you can keep the illness at bay and overcome the overwhelming stress of all things touring. I gave it up a decade ago because my health was suffering all the time. Hats off to you.
Get well soon Mary. It's not always easy doing what You love.
Pleased you sorted out the guitar problem and that you seem to be in better health and spirits, cheers🎼👏👏💐 🎼,Roly🇬🇧
Did Pete Townshend shove it through a speaker?
Enjoyed. Ya I feel ya! being sick on the road is the pits. I can tell in your eyes. Hope you are feeling better.
Speedy recovery Mary cheers

How wonderful to have a stand-in guitar to replace the fallen warrior!

A Good night's sleep. NOT a hood nights sleep. Dear lord, my proof reading is abysmal.
you're the best and the Marceau team will always be there to support you.
❤
Mary, I hope you are feeling better and better
Loved seeing you with the lovely Mark Hetherington as part of the team! We loved the gig. Thanks for your openness about just how hard you work. The Brudenell is a real treasure. Please come back again! Vlog has been fantastic. Ps no idea you had a cold. Album is a real treat but you are better live.
it's a big tour these are big challenges but they were challenges laid out before a considerable mind and talent. the smart money will always be on Mary Spender.
Mary, you are amazing. Thanks for sharing your musical life with us!
I absolute love watching these tour videos. The honesty, the editing, the music...outstanding. I feel like we're there with you, Mary. You've really captured something quite special. Just terrific work.
Heartbreaker's back!!! The show can go on!
You are a hero! I am in awe of all that you do. You have a huge musical heart and a spine of steel. Hang in there, best wishes.
Truly warms my heart to see you touring ❤
The highs and lows of touring! Looking and sounding great! Rock On!
As I stated previous times.
1. Sleep and Rest - No matter what! Especially since you are the focal point of this fantastic tour.
2. Trials and tribulation - No matter how much you plan and double check, things go south at most inopportune moments.
FYI, that "substitute" guitar is very "sexy".
Continue to have a memorable journey.
And again, thank you for sharing. 🎸🎸🎸👍👍👍
It's a long way to the top if you wan to rock and roll. Wishing you all the best Mary.
You look 100% well Mary. Stay positive.
Saw you at the Brudenhall. Really geat gig. Hope you tour again soon.
Great stuff. I would love to hear these songs with a male backing vocalist. Could build up more to a climax because sometimes they seem to peter out a bit.
Thank you for being so candid about your experiences Mary. Your commitment and talent shine through. best wishes x
Thank god for Tom ! What a guy and what venue, you got so lucky gal. Except for the cold, But you can finish the tour on top once again giving us what we all want you and your music. Keep on pluckin
Mary you are truly amazing on so many levels and your content is all inspiring but please rest and take care of your health and well being the best you can. You are precious cargo.
I used to be touring back in the days
I noticed that I often got a “tour downer” after 3-4 days, when the first excitement was gone 😊 Easy to catch a cold or some headache during this time.
But it used to get better after some days. Healthy food and some contemplative walks also helped me.
Thanks for this series and your "on tour" background videos!
All the best wishes to you! ♥
Love watching these bits and pieces of your tour. Keep them going...🎉🎉
Bear in mind it’s your first venture. Next time will be better. We all live and learn. Hope you feel better soon and best of luck 👍
If I ever get my band on tour, you’ve inspired me to at least try to film it and post it, in some similar way to what you’ve done. Cheers! Don’t stop now.
You deserve all the success that you get, because you put so much into your performances and you have a beautiful voice
My absolute favourite venue ever! I've had so many magical gigs and memories at that place ❤
I hope you feel better soon Mary. I remember working in Leeds about 10 years ago. I liked the city. Sorry about what happened with your guitar. The new guitar looks good too!
I always think of the Who when I think about Leeds. The Who and Davey Boy Smith :).
So, I've been watching your videos for about a year now. I think you're a great musician and song writer. But, I've been racking my brain trying to think of why you look so familiar. I finally got it. You look just like Barbara Feldon from the TV series Get Smart.
Bless you Mary and band et al....sorry I missed out on Cambs venue
Music is a gift and a curse- Inside everyman there is lead guitarist dying to get out... Well done Mary - hard yakka
I'm looking forward to the day when you can tour in the US, hopefully east coast. Love your vlogs - takes me back to my time of traveling to gigs.
I may or may not be partial to the current replacement, due to the styling with the flat black...... lol
The Brudenell is a fantastic venue. Glad you enjoyed it. Fingers crossed for no more equipment mishaps. Really enjoying the vlogs.
Hang in there Mary! When you look back you'll remember mostly the good things.
You look good to me in Glasgow Mary 😍🎸🎤🥁🔊
The Brudenell is one of my most favourite venues in the UK. I’m glad you got to play there. I’m sorry I couldn’t make i though.
Thank you, Mary!
Ha, some movies have the stars doing the slow-motion group walk towards the camera, and this has the slow-mo sound check? Aces
I'm LOVING the tour vlogs! Reminds me of my touring days ( I even miss the drudgery of it...sometimes)
As a survivor of tiny tours in the 90's I feel your pain especially when you feel that cold coming on, couragio!
All will be revealed.
You are such an inspiration ❤
Sorry to hear. Feel better soon!
Hope you feel better 💐
I love these vlogs!
So sorry to hear about the 'challenges'. I sincerely wish there was something I could do. Figured that I could pray for you at the very least (even though this is over and done). Take care of you and the rest gets a bit easier.
This is a truly enjoyable series of what a musical tour looks like from the inside. 😊
My band just played a 3 hr gig with everybody sick, except for the lead singer. I feel for your struggles. Get well.
Enjoying your tour from western France.
Sending love❤❤❤
Looks like you're going to be feeling better, and I doubt you'll have any "bad" shows. Keep on strummin'. Best of times to you and your band mates! Looks like FUN! Don't worry... paydays will keep on coming too!
