The ‘No Music’ made me click. I just came from another video on autism where the repetitive background music just did my head in and I was heading for a meltdown. Relaxed sigh… I’m no longer feeling like I’m going to burst into tears.

Night owl here. I have always struggled to make myself go to bed and when I do get to bed I have poor sleep, tossing and turning, intrusive thoughts, getting only 3-4 hours at a time, bad dreams all the annoying no sleep traits. Last week I received a weighted blanket as a birthday gift and my goodness what a game changer. And though it still takes me a little while to switch off I have been sleeping soundly right through til morning and it feels like it. No grogginess or wanting to go back to bed. It’s amazing I can’t recommend it enough. Great for those meltdown moments too.

I have a weighted blanket too and like it a lot but I get too hot when I sleep. Maybe I should try to find another one...if I can work out the temperature issues. Thanks for sharing this, and glad to hear your sleep is improving!

I have GERD too, and it sucks. But if I could get rid of just one autism symptom, it would be the anxiety I get from last-minute changes. My day was totally thrown off today when I was forced to have a social interaction at work that I wasn't expecting. I didn't have a meltdown over it, but was bad enough that I cancelled my afternoon plans and am now hiding under my blanket at home. 😮‍💨

Oh I’m with you! Last-minute changes send me into cardiac arrest. I don’t do well with last-minute changes. Sometimes you gotta cancel your afternoon plans and hide under the blanket. I’ve been there… yesterday.

Holy moly… I have not been diagnosed with autism, but in recent years, after reading up on it and seeing my life described perfectly, I suspect I am autistic. This video? You could be talking about me! I’ve had stomach issues, poor sleep, and increasing random body pains my entire life. The stomach issues! My word, the stomach issues. And sleeping? It’s been a disaster for me for decades, despite reading all,the books and following all the advice. Thank you for being you and telling the world this information. I don’t know if you realize how important it is for people like me to realize that I’m not faulty and I’m not alone. ❤

No background music!!!! YAYAYAYA, thanks! Man, the gas... yes, that sucks a lot... And the night owl thing.... Even if I have to wake up early in the morning, I cannot go to sleep before 1 am... I always end up going to bed at 2 and waking up at 7. No good going to be early, I'll only fall asleep at 2...

    • @ChrisandDebby
      @ChrisandDebby  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Haha… glad you like the no music edition! I’m really trying to make my videos as accommodating as possible. Sometimes my autistic viewers are a bit demanding, but I completely understand why. It’s not easy being autistic.
I think I’ve narrowed most of the gas issues down to gluten. Although I love gluten, I gotta stop eating it. The sleep thing is sooo challenging! Im with you 100%. Im going to make videos in the near future encouraging people with autism to become self employed and work from home. Once I did that, my life greatly improved. If I didn’t sleep well, I could nap or rest. No need to have to go to work and suffer.

@@ChrisandDebby - Gluten and sugar are super harmful to us. The constant up and down of blood glucose cause havoc in the brain. The keto diet changed my life so much that I am taking dietetics in college and have been studying gastronomy focused on low carb bread and pastries. I am building my gastronomic life around a very low carb amount to improve my brain performance. But as I love bread and cakes and sweets too much, I had to find a way to work around this, and I am super succeeding. I am a web designer and developer and once I started working from home, my life also improved SOOOOO MUCH!!! I can go to sleep at 3am and wake up at 10 and it's all good. It is really bizarre, but my brain only starts really working after the sun is down...

@@montycora yes, I also found it was so much better once I started to pay more attention to the environment I work best in (which is often at home). I didn’t notice your details about food before - I should pay more attention to the sugar part. I love sugar way too much and then I often crash too so maybe being more conscious of this throughout the day would help, especially with the stomach issues and the regulation for the brain

Peopling exhausts me. Even when I WANT to people.
I normally try to give myself extra time in a schedule where if I need to re-route transit, have random rest stops on a long drive, or just knowing a train goes over tracks at a certain time, if there's a change in plans SO late where the buffer is already eaten up... I'm done. Like, I just want to go home done. There is no fun to be had for the rest of the day.

  • @resourcedragon

I've not been diagnosed but I'm definitely getting suspicious that I may be on the spectrum.
One of the things that I've found makes me surprisingly tired is if I have to go to several different places in a day, perhaps to attend a variety of appointments and go to a shop I don't usually need to go to. I've never understood it, as I've spent the day doing hard physical labour and not felt that tired, I've spend the day doing long distance driving and not felt that tired. I think being on time/fitting things in to a schedule are big stressors for me.
My sleep problems aren't as extensive as yours but I can easily imagine how difficult it would be to fall asleep with restless leg syndrome. I get the very occasional jerk and it completely interrupts falling asleep, like an alarm clock would. So if you are getting a sequence of them most nights then that would be difficult. (For those who've never experienced it, those leg jerks are not a voluntary movement. They are very sudden, very fast and feel as if they are using quite a bit of muscle twitch strength.)
Again, I don't get the nearly-empty bladder making a nuisance of itself _often,_ but if I do have a night when I don't sleep well, my bladder may join in the party and want emptied for no good reason. I find the best thing to do is just empty it because I'm not going to get back to sleep if I don't. I have got quite close to perfecting the art of hardly waking up to go to the lavatory, so that, as a general rule, I can get back to sleep easily after going to the loo in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, the hardly waking up doesn't work so well when I'm waking up for reasons other than an actual, full bladder.

  • @carriev9608

Sometimes if I've done too much, most of my body will twitch when I try to sleep. The only thing that works is to go to bed in my recliner, where I'm partially sitting up. This helps with heart palps, too, which is also something I struggle a lot with. Totally works and I often fall asleep within a few minutes. If I try to lay down and force myself to relax, I'll be awake for like 3 hours until I finally get up and go to my chair.

Magnesium is super helpful. If that doesn't resolve it, it's worth getting your ferritin checked. I had the leg problems he describes and the doctor found that my ferritin was low. Taking an iron supplement is making a huge difference for my restless leg syndrome! I actually started sleeping through the night, which had never happened before! Bonus, my mystery knee pain disappeared. Turns out it was cause I hyperextend my knees in my sleep.
Don't start iron supplements without checking with your doctor though! They can really hurt you if you don't need them.

Omg. Driving. I CAN drive but it triggers fight of flight EVERY day. I literally want to throw up after driving. Phone calls also make me want to throw up. Doctors appts, the sun, bright lights in general, fire alarms, tornado sirens, pastry scented candles and lotions, AIM branded toothpaste, heat, oranges, grapefruit, tangerines. The list goes on. I'm on the fence about getting a formal diagnosis but you're videos make me feel like I'm in denial 😂

Telephone calls are almost always interruptions and appointments (any sort, to be honest) have the stress of having to get there on time.

Omw the stomach issues! I’ve had spastic colon, I’ve got IBS, and I’ve had acid reflux on/off for the past year. I got a doctor who actually decided to investigate the cause of the acid reflux, bloating and stomach cramps, and it turns out I tested positive for helicobacter pylori. Turns out 2/3 of the worlds population may have this bacteria and it’s actually beneficial, but once it’s turns into an infection, it can have an ugly prognosis if not treated. The ironic thing is that the treatment is pretty simple. I’m currently in the middle of the treatment so I’ll see if it helps.
Tho that said, I do find that when I’m uncomfortable or stressed out, my stomach will clench up and I’ll likely press my teeth onto each other -intensely.
I’ve heard that the stomach issues happen to us cuz of the gut-brain axis - we get stressed and so our stomach gets stressed out, and visa versa.

Last week on Wednesday I didn't get to sit down before people were talking at me(brain not functioning on input mode yet), I didn't get a lunch because of clients calling, I had to stand the whole way(an hour) on two busses(I have chronic fatigue and POTS and almost passed out), got off and sat for a minute on the first ledge I saw, not there 10 seconds and people with brain injuries from the medical building there start talking to me because apparently I look like someone else and boy are they chatty, so I get up before I'm rested properly and have to stop at the bottom of my building too and apparently only smokers do that and they're poor so everyone keeps asking me for a light and to bum a smoke and I don't smoke cigarettes and they're smoking and talking to me real close so I got up again, and then I get in my building and the alcoholic who always says something sexual is waiting for the elevator too, and when I get off the lady who lives beside the elevator who is chatty was there and then I got to my apartment and my hands are shaking so bad with the keys it drew the attention of the neighbor, who was coming in off the stairs and so that was a conversation... and I got in my house and sat down with my bags still attached to me and CRIED. And I could not speak the rest of the night. It was like my tongue was thick and stuck to me. I had to take the next 2 days off work and honestly didn't even feel right by MONDAY. I'd felt like a pinball that whole time, banging between each social interaction.

It's like a nervous twitch! It happens to my eye sockets sometimes. I have gastritis and most of the stomach/digestive issues you mentioned. I've always had a bit of a delicate stomach. I'm sensitive to dairy. The gastritis for me, was caused by NSAIDS though. I recommend The Gastritis Healing book by L. G. Capellan.
The muscle tightness you mentioned is down to a T for me. It's a major problem and has caused neurological issues. My back muscles are often like tough leather and I have to have massage regularly with the Thumper Max Pro... My husband does it for me. Definitely recommend the Thumper massagers. You can get different ones for self use or therapeutic use. They're professional standard so not cheap but when my Chiropractor used the Max Pro on me, I was sold. 😁😂

I really appreciate you talking about the digestive distress that is frequently comorbid with ASD. I had sharp, stabbing pains in my stomach my whole life that doctors couldn't diagnose. They kept wanting to give me that purple pill. Once I was diagnosed with ASD, I realized there was probably a connection. Regular probiotics and a low carb/ketogenic diet has helped immensely in this regard.

I think not many doctors think about (or maybe were trained on this?) the connections between everything in your body and your brain. So I have a video I’m sharing soon about my diagnosis journey and it made me reflect on how many physical issues I’ve had that now I really can link to autism! Back pain and muscle tension, stomach, skin problems, and much much more. So thanks for sharing your experience too! I hope it all helps more people better understand autism and all that it can encompass

So, I get your American, like me, however this having to walk home or a path in a certain way is OCD. If interrupted, you return home or to the place where your anxiety can be better controlled and your stomach from the anxiety attack. I was diagnosed with OCD on top of it all, which is not what I was expecting. I was diagnosed in an EU country though. Apparently counting my steps, not wanting to step on a crack at times, among other things, led to it being added.
Also, with acid reflux lay on your left side until it dissipates, the value to the stomach is above the liquid there and acid has a harder time flowing outwards. On the right side, the valve is lower than the stomach acids and makes it easier for it flow up your esophagus, apparently the back also.
Oh you have restless leg syndrome, it runs in my family too. My leg muscles just twitch and I will wake up with a cramp because my foot decided to twist while I was sleeping. I manage the cramps with magnesium and zinc, but not the twitching muscles. My mother and brother get up and just walk around their houses while I guess mentally tiring themselves out so they crash again in bed. They have it worse than I do, I just read a book until I forget enough to just crash back into sleep.

I just found out about the laying on your left side a few weeks ago and you are spot on. It does help a lot!

I’m pretty sure (74.78%) that the poop deck was named 6 thousand years ago after a person walked into the bedroom of an autistic, saw the bed setup and then shit a 32 foot sailboat. I’m almost entirely positive (88.647%) this is how sailboats were invented.
We don’t resell these special types of boats. Far too rare and personal to their owners.

@@ChrisandDebby the amount of fiber one must have in their diet to produce a 32 footer is commendable. I can see why it would be priceless.

That’s what I used to think before I was diagnosed by two separate doctors. I’ve also learned that these kinds of comments are harmful to autistics. Hopefully my videos can help you learn more about the autism spectrum and how much it varies across people

If you think the symptoms of autism are just "normal problems" then maybe you should get assessed mate.
