Congratulations on your new truck. Been following you since your purchase. I have the 2020 3.0 Silverado RST. Just turned 20,000 miles. The fuel mileage has been all over the place depending on what I’m doing. Pulling an enclosed 7x12 trailer it runs on average between 11-13 mpg. That’s fantastic compared to my old 2017 5.3 Silverado which averaged 4-6 mpg pulling same trailer. I live in Lubbock, Texas where heavy winds are prevalent more often than not. That said I live about 30 miles out in the country and so my trips average highway speeds of 65-75 mph are the norm in my travels. I am constantly averaging 30-34 mpg over the history of my truck. That’s phenomenal in my book and this little Duramax continues to make this old man smile. Last winter I left Lubbock for Gulfport, Ms. I fueled up Lubbock,Tx. The wind that day was very, very strong out of the West. It was 4 December 2021. That day absolutely confirmed my purchase decision. My next fuel stop out of Lubbock was New Orleans, La. I averaged over 40 mpg that day with my best at 47mpg. I have never reached that again but that wind blew my truck all the way to Louisiana. Now, I travel to Carlsbad, NM 2-3 times a year driving into heavy winds and a windy day heading into wind, not towing can be as low as 17. But, I did all this same traveling with my old 2017 Silverado and I assure you, the mpg on that was terrible compared to this diesel. I have no desire to ever return to a gas engine in a 1/2 ton truck. This truck continues to put a smile on this old man’s face. I hope you find the same enjoyment I have with your new Silverado.
I have a 21 AT4 with the prior 3.0L. Towing a Jayco Whitehawk 29BH my fuel mileage is between 9 and 10 MPG depending on hills, headwinds, tailwinds. That's also on 35" tires with a wider cross section and an additional lift(level). Regularly getting 28 to 34MPG on my commute to work. Wife's 23 Escalade with the 3.0L is able to get 38MPG on the same commute and is averaging 25MPG all around. Hands down, one of the best mileage and power performance options I've ever had. While I've had the bigger Duramax before and loved it, this setup is really a sweet spot for those that want the utility of the truck with outstanding fuel mileage.
That's a huge spread in fuel milage?? That 3L doesn't seem very efficient if used for towing. I pull a similar camper with a 20 year old 5.4L gas and get better mileage towing.
@@enz6312 I tow a camper once every other weekend if I'm lucky. Everything else is around town. Those mileages are for long treks at 70MPH. Drop to 55 and it's a different story. It's actually a good trade off. I've had a 2008 5.3L Sierra and even that truck would be lucky to get 10MPG with this setup. My race trailer setup was fairly similar in weight by comparison. The current 6.2L would certainly have more power but willing to bet the towing mileage would be 10-12 and the daily mileage would be 15 to 19 anyway. The 3.0L lands right in the middle of the two GM gas options. You wouldn't buy it because it tows. You'd buy it because you want to drive it all over and it can tow. And if you really were towing, we'd be talking about the HD lineup of trucks and the larger diesels vs 1/2 tons anyway. I wouldn't tow any larger than this on a 1/2 ton.
I have a 2022 3.0 with a cover. I got to Las Vegas from Tucson on half a tank. I was super impressed.
I have the Denali with the LZ0 and after my first tank of fuel I got 33.6 mpg. That’s while doing the break in by not holding steady speed and not going over 55. I’m very impressed!
I travel 80km a day. Once I installed the tonneau cover on my 2023 at4 which is also equipped with the 3.0L diesel engine. I'm averaging 31MPG. It definitely improved with the cover

I have an 2023 At4 with 3.0 and have never averaged 31mpg. Most of the time I barely get 23, my best average was just over 25. I am always driving trying to get the best mpg. Maybe you are getting 31 kmpg.

I’m at 6500 miles 2023 3.0 diesel since new it’s at 17.8 mpg overall. I drive slowly and my old 2022 got much better gas mileage old 3.0
Thanks for this real world demonstration of the I6 fuel economy. I had high hopes for this configuration. I'm a fan of the inline sixes (both Cummins and 'Baby' Max) and would definitely consider this for both a daily driver and road trip vehicle. I don't tow much at all, so the 3 liter I6 is a good option over smaller 'skateboards.'

Recently TFL had some crazy results comparing taking stuff on and off a truck. No way was it accurate.
Your spot on, unless you pretty much fill it till it runs out your never going to get even close to an accurate calculation by hand.
I have to believe that with level of fuel management modern trucks have in them. I would really expect the trucks computers to know exactly how much fuel it burned. Should be way more accurate then any so many second and click methods seen on other channels.

With over 35 years of formal testing engineering experience, TFL’s Ram 1500 mpg testing videos removing and reconfiguring parts that affect aerodynamics and its fuel economy was spot on, IMHO.
@@icare7151 my personal experiences with many of the same vehicles they have tested, tell me otherwise.
I will just have agree to disagree. I would think most engineers would agree more with what was described in this video here, then very non scientific approach TFL uses when testing mpg’s. Only running 60 even a 100 miles using their less then stellar top off methods is very prone to wide range of variances , exactly as they were described in this video, and what I have seen first hand with like vehicles.
The only problem with TFLs method is too short of a drive. You need to go at least 100 miles to use enough fuel to get an accurate result, the farther, the better. But that takes time and costs more, so they don't.
how doe the mpg vs cost of the diesel pan out with cost of def? Anyone do the math how long based on 15,000 per year does it take to pay back with cost of diesel fuel and def with real mpg's and isn't maintenance higher on the diesel?

That is no joke! Mine is a 2020 Silverado LM2 and I get 600 miles on a 24 gallon tank. Yes folks it's a 24 gallon tank not the older 26 tank. In a full size truck with alot of power!

I have this same truck . 2023 GMC 3.0 Duramax . I have 10,000 miles on this truck and the MPG has gradually became better the more miles I have put on the truck . I have seen 34.4 mpg . But it averages 26 mpg daily . Even at speeds of 75 to 80 mph it still gets 25 to 26 . I will say when I get around 4 to 5 thousand miles in oil change the mpg goes down and it’s noticeable. I have went on long trips around 700 miles and I got 29 mpg at fast speeds
Nice choice of cover, We have a 2020 Ram 3500 HD single rear wheel long bed with the same cover. Haven't really done a long comparison with it out on the road we're getting 20 -22 so far 32 gallon tank and obviously a much heavier truck with the cp3 replacement high fuel pump. Best numbers are at speeds 62-65 but no complaints. Travel safe. We enjoy your videos.
My 2019 Ram Classic 5.7 avg 22.8 on a round trip from Tx to Ca. I love the diesel but it is hard to justify cost.

Thanks for sharing your MPG experiences. however, (when empty) wind and speed are two major factors that one should make note of when tracking MPG. That said you are for sure showing the BTU differences between diesel and gasoline.

Have you checked your tire pressure to make sure they’re not over inflated? I have a 22 silverado with the 3.0 duramax, my tire pressure is supposed to be 35psi, and i see yours constantly running at 40. That will affect your comfort, makes the truck a lot more harsh, but will give you better mpg.
Pump fuel slowly so it doesn't foam up. I've found that I put another gallon in my Tahoe by pumping slowly.

The fuel gage doesn’t drop because the float hits the top of the tank before the tank is full. So most vehicles don’t show a drop of the fuel gauge until you use 15 to 20% of the fuel. I haven’t had a vehicle that didn’t do this. If you leave the key on while your filling the truck and have someone inside tell you when the gauge says full you will be able to get another 20 dollars of diesel in the tank. That’s why the gauge doesn’t drop for the first 100 200 miles.
The app shows the nearest 1% and drops well before the gauge does. I think it’s more of a dummy thing, kinda like the voltmeter and temperature gauge where they don’t move until there’s a semi decent change.
How did you break-in your LZO? Yours doesn’t burn oil like Tim’s at pickup truck plus suv right?

I have the 21 at4 loaded I love it I have the 3.0 diesel the 277hp version it’s my last fuel truck before I go electric in a few years it’s really the best half ton fuel economy wise.

My 2021 AT4 diesel does very well .Im not easy on the throttle, I have my best showing at 27.5 mpg and 21.5 in town. Town usually includes pulling my toys at about 4500 lbs to the dunes. Could not be happier, pulls like nothing behind you. When nothin bolted on, the thing just gets scarry if you on the throttle, when wet. I live on the Oregon coast.
Mythbusters didn't do anything with the tonneau cover. Just tailgate on or off. Answer: better with tailgate up.
From a purely cost of ownership approach the 5.3 will have the lowest cost of ownership especially for people with really expensive diesel. But I’d we bought what we needed we’d all be driving a Prius abs just paying $40 for mulch to be delivered 😂. I love the way diesels drive and it’s just fun having an I6 diesel over the V8 gas. Plus who doesn’t love some big highway range.
Not sure what I would be driving if I was "driving what I need" but for darn sure I would not be driving a Prius no matter what.
Complete agreed on your assessment of the suspension. My '23 Silverado LZ0 unfortunately only has the standard suspension as I had to decide between the 6.2 with adaptive or 3.0 without. I still made the right choice (the 3.0 is awesome), but I'll be replacing it next year and will absolutely make sure it has both LZ0 and adaptive suspension. The initial impressions may not seem like much, but once you get the suspension moving, you can really feel the improved damping, handing, and compliance. Otherwise the standard is simply adequate. Firm and still floaty. Adaptive should be standard on the High Country as well. Currently you can only get it with 22's with a Chevy, which is dumb.
Its too bad the the 2023 Yukon still has the LM2 (older) Duramax Diesel. I had to switch to a gas model, because I do not have the luxury of waiting for a 2024 model, which will have the LZ0. Very disappointing, as I am a Diesel fan.

Great video to show how the conditions will determine the mpg. I wonder how the new tundra will compare.
I've owned a great many vehicles over the years. Some vehicles were consistently within +/-0.2MPG of accuracy. Some were wildly off by 30% or more in either direction. It seems like vehicles are much better than they used to be when it comes to calculating MPG. Especially DI vehicles whos PCM usually calculates each individual injection event down to the microliter. Or in some cases of advanced control, the decimal point of the microliter.
To your point, unless you are brimming the tank (NOT good for your EVAP system), you can't guarantee total accuracy on hand calculation. I like how TFL does it - same pump. After the first click, wait 30 seconds and go until the next click.

Diesel around here is $3.66-$4.19. So about the same as gas. Wasn’t that way last summer but that was an anomaly. We are back to normal so far. Let’s hope it stays that way and that the oil companies don’t play the shortage game again.
Wind will help and hurt fuel mileage. One trip pulling my DRV, I had a strong tail wind. We were getting 17-18 mpg. Coming back, same wind against me, Solid 9 mpg. Lol. Usually coming back to the RGV, I face a strong SE wind everytime.
I’ve also found mpg increases when you don’t turn on the A/C. Yeah in the Southern states AC is nearly impossible to not have to turn on. But it is a factor to realize it will affect your mpg.

Can you reset your avg fuel economy while your driving? I usually keep mine on the page where it shows what your best mpg for a chosen range in the left of a bar, and then on the right, it tells you your current mpg average. I haven't figured out how to zero it
Diesel is $4.89 in PA. I drive the Dodge 5.9L every couple of weeks just to run the truck. I’ll drive it more this summer when I tow the boat.

Hi, I watch a lot of your videos and trust your advice. I need help. I have a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, High Country, Duramax, Z71 Crew Cab Standard Bed w/gooseneck/5th wheel prep pkg. I'm buying a 2022 Jayco Eagle 321RSTS. What hitch would you recommend? Do I need a slider?
I have the same HD truck as you but a GMC and similar sized 5th wheel. The newer GM HD trucks have the hitch ball sitting just behind the rear axle giving a couple more inches for Cab clearance to 5th wheel cap during turns. I use an Andersen hitch since and have never had an issue with turning radius. As a person in his mid 60's, I also love the ability to easily remove the hitch from the bed of the truck. Congrats on the new truck, you'll love it.

Here in southwestern PA (Pittsburgh) diesel is at $4.99/gallon and that’s the lowest price in months.
Speed matters, too. 60 on the way down is more fuel efficient that 75. Higher speed PLUS wind compounds the issue. Still not bad for a full-sized truck.
Speed matters perhaps to a larger degree than most can even comprehend. Given some ballpark, basic approximations on the truck (drag coefficient, surface area, etc.), the motor is needing to generate over twice the HP for ~75-80mph vs 60mph. You might think that you're just cruising a little faster, but there really is no such thing in terms of drag. Best way to improve MPGs is to slow down.
Boy I can’t believe how flat Texas is, sure you get great mileage. It would be interesting to know what the mileage would be in mountain states like Washington State or Oregon where the climbs can be substantial. Thanks to our newest added $.50/gal fuel tax by Washington State tree huggers, our diesel prices are $5.25. I’m not sure I’d like my vehicle to turn off while at the stoplight.
Fellow washingtonian here, where I'm driving over the passes all the time with my diesel colorado. The good news on the diesel side of things is that the degree of variability (e.g. standard deviation) for diesels are way way less than the gas counterparts (especially small displacement turbo gas). Its one of the things I really appreciate about the 2.8 diesel, and am quite envious of this 3.0L. The one thing that is miserable of course is our crooked state and what they are taxing us for fuel.
Good morning i need some help! Currently negotiating a 2023 at4 with the diesel engine but I noticed a difference between two identical trucks when it comes to MPG. One truck advertises 21 city 23 highway 22 combined while the other truck advertises 22 city 27 highway 24 combined. The sales person couldn’t explain the difference and the gear ratio is the same. I’m not a truck expert but I do a lot of driving and I’m trying to get he best out of my truck. Thanks.
Possibly Gear Ratio. The lower gear Ratio might not be as fuel efficient.
At4 has a 2” lift and bigger tires, that’s why it doesn’t get as good of mileage.
When you do your towing test also note that if you are towing 6000 or so pounds you will get completely different results on your DEF consumption depending on your MPH+Gear/power used. For instance, at 55MPH you won't see a big difference. On mine at 70MPH if you're in the RPM band closer to 2000 you're going to find it will hold a lower gear and use about a box of DEF for every two fill ups. And that's not because of regen. My guess is they're using DEF under higher load to either precool the intake charge or aftercool (no idea how it's used) even further to lower the emissions. You may have to mess with your cruise control to get it to shift to the sweet spot where it's able to hold the downshift into the final gear and you'll get a nicer uptick in MPG but your DEF will still be used up. Mine is right about 72 to 74 MPH. WIth the new 3.0L having a bit more HP I am very curious if it can get to that shift point and hold it a lot easier. If you're hovering at 70MPH and down a gear is when you'll see it the most. Also, do not trust the DEF gauge. At least in mine it's useless. The Banks iDash is the only way to get a real understanding of the DEF tank level. No idea if they fixed that in the refresh, but I highly doubt it. I always carry two boxes of DEF on very long hauls so that you don't have to worry about finding a stop that may or may not have DEF depending on where you're off to. This might sound more terrible than it actually is. Once you know about this it's not a big deal at all.
I’m wondering if the fuel gauge is based on mileage remaining instead of gallons in the tank? I have a 2023 GMC SIERRA with the LZ0 with about 1000 miles on it and the fuel gauge does the same thing. If the fuel gauge was based on gallons it should not indicate a full tank. You used 5 gallons of fuel so about 20%.
The banks I dash displays fuel tank in a percent seems to be more accurate than the factory gauge.

Hey Gadget, you’re getting into the weeds on mpg don’t ya think? 🤔. There’s also full beds vs. long beds, switching out fuel tanks to a titan, squeezing in the last few drops, wind, road conditions, & on & on& on. . .😮
Gas and electric fueling and measuring are very similar. To include correct and incorrect guage readouts. Tesla has it best with just sticking with EPA numbers and not messing with adapting to driving habits. edit: my 97 Silverado got 180 miles to the tank (hitting E and sputtering when taking turns too fast). It would not start creeping away from F until I traveled about 50 miles. It was crazy. Read full everything over. My S-10 was similar. My motorhome is similar. 600 miles but the first hundred barely move the guage.... I wonder if you had a heavy tailwind on the trip down.
Did the Mythbusters test in a wind tunnel? If not, then I would question their results

Look at the tire pressure. I would imagine having different tire pressure on each tire, that would affect performance.
Maybe the wind was with you going south? The reason for the good mileage.
my 62-miles best is 50.5mpg with my LM2. the downhill run into Denver, so duh!

no, that's not true. with my LM2, I can get 28 running down the highway at 75 or up here at 9k' doing around 65, getting 31. other than extreme downhill or tailwind scenarios, the max i can pull is about 36mph at 50mph, assuming you are in an area without traffic
Results will vary. Everyone drives differently
Don’t forget the dash fuel economy computer is programmed by a GM employee. I was talking with a 2022 Nissan Frontier owner about his fuel economy. He said his fuel economy was 22-23 mpg in the city and 29-31 mpg on the highway. Those numbers are so far out from the EPA estimate it’s ridiculous. His city mileage was higher than EPA highway mileage.
you are right in that a lot of cars can easily beat the EPA estimate. the EPA estimate is directly computed with test cars through a specific sequence of operations, and it makes sense to use one common test regiment across manufacturers. of course the test operations don't necessarily represent every situation, therefore you can beat it

At the ~16:50 mark you are saying how the tank is showing full but by your mileage numbers the truck has burned at least 5 gallons of fuel at that point. Something with the computer and display of numbers doesn’t add up. You can’t still have a full tank.
The tank level gauges are really off relative to fuel used when full. I think they account for fuel above the tank float and offset that on the dash. If you use a Banks iDash you'll see that the tank level at half is actually reading closer to 40%. But when it's full it will read 99% for a long time. And when it drops below 25% it tends to go way faster than the first 25% did as a result.
are you in 2 or 4 wheel drive?

Southern California is up to $7.00 a gallon , Mid Cal is cheapest @ $4.84 per gallon at truck stops ,Nor Cal is @ $6.00 , I fuel up at Costco in my neighborhood at $5.19 per gallon . Looking forward to retirement when we will leave California , we’re about a year out. If the pipelines were opened back up I’m sure California would get back to the low $2 per gallon.

I think in general you'll be close to accurate fuel economy when looking at the dash...with the exception of Ford. My 2019 Raptor is almost dead on 1.0 MPG lower hand calculated MPG each and every time, and I've seen plenty of videos and talked with friends who have experienced similar Ford results.
GM does a fantastic job with the mpg meter being accurate, within reason, certainly within 1 mpg if you reset it with each tank.
we shouldn't be surprised with the complexity of the ECM, though. the mpg meter is no doubt directly computed from the fuel pressure, injection schedule, rpm, whether DPF is being burned, etc.
Fuel mileage is almost irrelevant. You need to figure out cost per mile vs let's say the F150 power boost cost per mile as an example.
I have kept a fuel log for my 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 3.0 Duramax since day one. It started out at about 0.15 cents a mile and is now up to 0.20 cents a mile with the cost of diesel fuel rising.

@@stacymanley161 I disagree. Just did a 30 mile trip and hit 39 for the trip. Commute 60 miles a 40 of that is highway and current averaging 25. Cheaper fuel and on board generator make it a great platform
No such thing as break in period with these newer engines where they claim you get better mileage , i got 33 + consistently brand new from the dealer , it's not like it's going to 35 mpg now .

I have 2017 Ram, 4x4, tow package (3.92 rear axle), 32 gallon tank, 5.7L Hemi, crew cab. The vehicle's trip computer is always off regarding MPG vs calculated. On average it's off 1 mpg, sometimes more or less. I recently installed a tonneau cover and it's hard to tell if I really gained anything, If I did at all it would be around 0.5 mpg. On average I get 16 mpg hwy and I use cruise control religiously. Sometimes the mpg can get to 17-17.5. Depends on speed limits and hills of course. At 75 mph is where I derive most of my numbers. At 80 mph it will drop. 75 seems to be the sweet spot. Of course at 65 mpg it would improve a little, but these days that's kind of slow on major highways. I would love to get at lest 25 mpg, but my tuck is paid for and I certainly don't want to spend $70k on a new truck. I've never bought new. Mine was only a year old when I bought it with 3500 miles on it and I only paid $30k and it has nearly all the bells and whistles you need. Including a sunroof which I could do without, but it came with it and I saved a lot of money over new.

Quick question for you. I’m literally going to pick up my 2023 gmc 1500 Denali Duramax in a hour. I need your advice on extended warranty. Get it or no? They are offering 10/75k for 3900.00. This dealership also gives me for free 25 year unlimited on powertrain beyond the 5/100k factory warranty. But I’m wondering to extend the 3/36? Any advice would be appreciated.
Computer says MPG is 30mpg over a distance of 150 miles. That's 5 gallons of fuel. With a 24 gallon tank, you used almost 1/4 tank. The fact that the "digital" meter still says full is BS. Give me an old fashioned analog fuel meter with float in the tank any day. Now for the oil consumption issue. Have you had the same experience as others with the Duromax?
the analog gauge from any GM car made in the 80's or 90's (and probably since) have always done the same, they take a while to move them off of full
The 3.0 is going to be really problematic and expensive due to its flawed and cheap design in certain parts. Save yourselves the headache and just go with the gas.
