- On the eve of Orioles Opening Day 2024, join us for a video on how we got the fantastic Oriole Park at Camden Yards that we know and love today. This trendsetting stadium opened in 1992 and has been a symbol of our city ever since. Thanks for watching and, of course, go O’s!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and TH-cam channel.

The New Busch Stadium in St Louis, MO replaced a tired multi-purpose, mid 1960s round "cookie cutter" stadium. In designing the new ball park, opened for the NL Cardinals baseball season in 2006, many cues were borrowed from Baltimore's Camden Yards. City location (with views of the Arch), use of red brick & retro architecture, field asymmetry, and throwback graphics & logos were also incorporated. One of my fondest memories of a visit to Camden Yards in the mid 90's was the reaction to a comment i made when first walking in. I said out loud to my buddies, "Wow, what a great stadium!"'. A Camden Yards usher overheard me and commented "It aint' a stadium pal, it's a ball park" LOL.
Camden Yards is one of the architectural wonders of the city. It’s impeccable how it seamlessly merge into downtown, making “walk to the stadium” an experience not only possible but also very pleasant. Not to mention the great job they’ve done in hiding the parking spots from immediate sight from the most attractive part of town - Inner Harbor. Love it!
I went to many games at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, one of the worst, and several at Camden Yards, the first new/ old style stadium. An amazing upgrade.
A very enjoyable watch! Thanks!
Thank you!
Oriole Park at Camden Yards is simply beautiful. It’s my favorite ballpark (despite that my primary allegiances are with the Red Sox and Cubs).
What a wonderful video. Thank you!
Excellent presentation!!! 👍🏿
Thank you!
Well Done! I opened up Camden Yards in my early 20's - there was a private - members only club/restaurant called The Camden Club on the 7th and 8th floor of the warehouse. It was a great experience as a huge baseball nerd and even bigger Orioles fan! I really hope that we can keep the name - I cant imagine calling it anything other than OPaCY!
So cool!
Bucket list is to go to every Baseball Stadium. Lucky that Camden is in my back yard. Not many stadiums ive been to hold a candle to it.
cant fathom they originally wanted to rid of the warehouse
Cool! How many have you been to?
@@baltimoreheritage1006just 11 of the current 30. I gotta get to the midwest.
@@CheeseCurdCommunism Cool!
Ok, now I want that shirt! Thanks for this historical insight on opening day. Good job.
Thanks for watching!
The ballpark that changed baseball forever and still does.
Thank you so much, really enjoyed this! Such great history behind this!
Appreciate you watching and commenting, Arlene!
So thankful to visit Camden with my late father, a Yanks fan, who passed unexpectedly in a natural disaster. Thank you Baltimore Orioles for bucking the multi-use stadium trend and keeping stadiums in the city center.
How fun was that!!!!!
That was very nice and very informative. Loved it. I’m glad this channel popped up.
Thanks for joining us!
This was a great video. I went to Johns Hopkins right at the last year of Memorial Stadium. I went to seven of the last games because we could get in for $4 and walk the entire stadium. I got hooked on to baseball then. I was able to go to Camden Yard for many of the early games during the opening season, before the Orioles started getting good that year and then place was sold out pretty much every game soon after. Camden Yards was such an upgrade over Memorial Stadium but I still have great memories of Memorial Stadium when the CFL Colts played their and I went to many a game, buying concessions from all the neighbors around the stadium.
I grew up in Baltimore County near Ft Howard. I have been an Os fan since 1966 I was 11 years old. I retired out of the Navy in 2000 here in the Norfolk Va area. I regularly go to Norfolk Tides game, they are the Orioles AAA team. It is my understanding that the tides park was designed by the same people that did Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It dose remind me of Camden yards. Check out the photos on line, and tell me if you will agree.
informative I've often wondered on this topic as I was but a teen when it opened
Thank you, John's Hopkins, for another great video. It was just a coincidence that I moved to Baltimore in April of 92. Just to see the opening of the best ballpark in baseball. Go O's 🧡
You have a convenient name for the city you are in. 😆
I think target field took some cues from this stadium too.
William Donald Schaefer also was the biggest supporter of bringing the NFL back to the city, if it wasn't for him Baltimore may not have the Baltimore Ravens
Let's go O's
Well done, Johns! The image at 4:40 is reversed, just to let you know!
Thanks Greg!
No one cares Greg go lay down
Bittersweet. First Opening Day since Brooks passed away.
Thank god i could get season tickets since Angelo’s sold!
There was several Oriole Parks in the 1900s.Two to be precise before the one in Camden Yards.
Yes, we have a video on that too! th-cam.com/video/dQOBTxlyfbw/w-d-xo.html
Can you please do a memorial stadium one?
??? ( What is the Ashburton house Famous for ?? ) 🧐🤔🤔 Thank you so much!!! I think it's on Ashburton Street
Will you do a video on Howard Street? The history of its past and why it’s no longer the heart of the city.
Thats a great idea--we will add it to our list.
5 minute history that is 8 minutes and 27 seconds long
