I grew up in Baltimore during the 80s and I can remember the times spent at Memorial Stadium watching the O's play. Those were some great times, really sad day when they finally brought the stadium down.
Is there anymore footage of this day. Me and my Brother were at this game. My brother accidentally dropped his film in LF and they had to pause the game to throw it back to him. This game is one of most memorable games and has been in my mind insane to see this video. I remember the Orioles beat Dave Stewart and this great A’s team. Eddie Murray and Fred Lynn hit Hrs. Wow this brings a tear to my eye watching it.
I remember all of that, 33rd St, the parking lot where we used to wait to get autographs after the game, the ticket windows, the ushers in their orange jackets. I moved out of the area in 88 and never went to another game until I took my kids to Camden Yards in 2016. Great experirnce, no doubt, but I miss the neighborhood vibe at Memorial. Right on down to the teenage hoodlums who promised not to smash our windshield for $20!
This is amazing. Waverly is still such a beautiful neighborhood but it blows my mind to see such a clear vision of the stadium smack dab in the center of what is mostly just a grass field now.
To the person that videotaped this evening, thank you. You certainly knew the assignment and this is a true time capsule to a wonderful evening nearly 35 years ago. Fantastic footage.
Wow, an old Chuck Thompson on the mic. Had the smoothest voice for a baseball announcer. Wasn’t an Os fan but did enjoy listening to him calling games.
I live quite close to this area. I know every step of the way today. Whoever filmed this did a great job. Next time I'm near there I'm sure I'll be thinking about what it would have looked like back before I was born (1998). Awesome video.
Spent a lot of my childhood going to games at 33rd. Loved the memories and seeing the cars from the 80's and the way everyone was dressed. Those days were great. Thanks for the video.
Was born in 83, was at the last series at Memorial Stadium, and the first at OPCY. Not many memories from this time, but this video triggered memories of walking to Memorial Stadium this same route!
So many memories looking at this … I went to my first orioles game in 1988 … man I miss these times … thank you for this post … as a soon to be 41 year old born and bread Baltimorean … we truly don’t know what we have until it’s gone
I've been there twice ,once THe Lions Club in Pikesville, Md took a bus load of us kids to the game and the second time my neighbor had a spare ticket and asked me if I wanted to go to a night game ,glad I did .
This is quite simply…amazing. Exactly the kind of time capsule I wish I captured from back then (not just the Orioles but really anything like this). Thank you so much for posting! You just made my day!!!
Notice that not nearly as many people wore team apparel back then. Now when you go to a game, it’s a sea of orange jerseys and t-shirts. Times have certainly changed! Go O’s!
I know what you mean. My wife and I went to a Braves game in Atlanta this summer and we both noticed that nearly every person there was wearing some sort of Braves gear. I'm sure it's the same with most teams now. There's a lot more "stuff" to buy these days.
The Old Gray Lady. Spent many a summer night there.. The best, for me were the teams from the mid 60’s/early 70’s. And, most times, we’d win. It was great. I’d like to see another World Series, the first at Camden Yards…… Seen 6…..
I used to live very close to this ballpark. We could walk to there from our home near Montibello reservoir. The first year it opened, I saw the July 4th fireworks while sitting in the 1st level seats. After that, the second level seats blocked the view and you had to go to the upper level to get the entire field of view.
Looking at the first half of the video, noticing the hair and clothing styles on the fans, this just screams 80's! Wonder what all these people look like 36 years later. The little children are grownups now, with kids of their own.
Oh, man, watching this makes me think of James Earl Jones's speech from Field of Dreams, that they'd play when they shut this place down. "And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces." It really hit me hearing Jon Miller and Chuck Thompson doing play by play, with Rex Barney on the PA, then looking out on the bleachers past the outfield wall. I know there are houses past there, even if you can't see them at night. As a kid, I assumed the players lived there.
Actually some of them lived nearby back when I was a kid in late 60’s. A friend of our family used to give boog Powells kid candy and cookies. Different world but truly wonderful memories.
Wasn't it so nice you could drive and park in the neighborhood and walk in. It was an experience talking to people as you walked in and buy peanuts and aT Shirt maybe along the way. Try to park and walk there now. You ain't coming back. Don't try to say things are better in Baltimore today.
The man selling programs did that for decades, including at OPACY. He had an effortlessly booming voice; the video doesn't do it justice. He also worked as a barker on The Block.

Wow hearing Rex again after so long gave me chills
Thank Youuuuuu.

This so very true. It’s like going back in time to the summer nights watching the orioles in dear old memorial stadium.
Awesome to see
@@mouchiecat1They could've picked a better year than 1988. The Orioles were historically terrible that year.
This game happened a day before my birth. What a time capsule.

This is one of the most important time capsules in the history of Baltimore sports.
I agree. Many of us remember summer nights just like this.

This takes me back to when i was a kid riding in my dads or friends dads car to the game i remember these streets

Nice blast from the past! It was great seeing Chuck Thompson call PBP on radio. Guess he only wore the suit and top hat when he was on tv haha.
I lived on Harford Rd near 33rd until 88. I was 7 years old and lived about a mile from Memorial.

That's because teams never thought there'd be a market unlike today where it's a gigantic market.
Smarter folks, don't buy what they do not need
Thank....yooouuuu....
I miss Memorial Stadium
This is a lovely video that brings back a variety of memories. Thank you for sharing it.
Yes, great memories! I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Thank you.
Wonderful memories....
Brings back wonderful memories.
Priceless footage
I remember the program guy....

this is fantastic! Thanks!

Miss memorial stadium
Chuck Thompson on the Radio, Rex Barney on the PA system. O's Strohs and Natty Bo's Wild Bill Hagy Section 34.... Balimer Hun.
I still remember.
Never been to a O's game. Didn't know they people drive on the other side of 33rd Street for home games. That's wild.
Chuck Thompson. Joe Angel. Rex Barney. HTS. Gold!

Brandon is like what late thirties now
May 13, 1988. Orioles won 4-1.
Only the fifth win for the O's in 34 games at that point in the season. Remember, they started 0-21.
It was so much nicer then.
Notice the scarcity of team merch!
chuck thompson!!

Anyone know what date this was? Great footage- thank you!
Why is a 1988 camera a clearer picture ?
Old video recordings can be upscaled nowadays.
There she is memorial stadium in Baltimore
Where's Wild Billy Hagy; O R I O L E S, ORIOLES.
vs. Oakland and looks to be relatively early in the season (I'm guessing sometime in May). After the 0-21.
