I worked in the inner harbor in the 80’s & 90’s. The good people of Baltimore got me through College and to my first full time job and for that, I will always be grateful.
This presentation reminded me that planning for the 70's and 80's changes to the Inner Harbor were thought through over time (although I know some felt at the time even those changes were too fast). But development through the years has mostly maintained a sense of place. I think so many planners and architects are disappointed with the current proposal because it looks like design ideas were quickly thrown together and for the most part don't seem to represent what makes this location so special.
My first “real job” was at Mundo Latino in the Light St Pavillion. I’m so glad to have had that experience. The thought of private residences being built there makes me so very sad. This area needs to be kept public and open not blocked off by condos with great views of what used to belong to everyone.
Having been born in Baltimore back in 1950, I remember when the inner harbor area was piers and old warehouses, with a sprinkling of homeless people. We used to love going to Connelly's and Phillip's seafood restaurants. When the B&O RR was still operating from Mount Clare to President St. Stations via Pratt St., the crews used to stop the engine in front of Connelly's to go in and have dinner.

I adored going to Harbor Place.I had wonderful memories of walking and working there.
I loved Harborplace and would go often back in the 70s and 80s. It was one of those icons that one would never think would deteriorate. Yet, my heart broke when I saw that it has followed the lead of many "dead malls" and is now a "remember when" location for many, largely due to greedy investors and property management firms that were clueless in how to manage a venue like this, thus running it into the ground.
I think that a Baltimore based development firm should take it over and with the collaboration of the historical and resident groups in Baltimore restore it to its original purpose with local eateries and stores that made it a prime tourist attraction. Since they knew the original vision, the development should be relatively easy, provided they don't charge exorbitant rent prices for vendors like most dead mall owners did.
I am not so much concerned with the commercial amenities the new development will bring as having welcoming and beautifully accessible public spaces.
Johns is right.
Being near the water was the "special sauce" for me.
I used to love going to Phillips Seafood at the Light Street pavilion after Orioles games. Great view of the harbor 🦀
1. I love the motto "Connecting the City to the Sea." We all need to keep that in mind as we go forward.
2. The last time I was in the harbor was a few months ago. I had lunch at Fogo de Chao.
Johns, you are a wealth of knowledge and a treasure to Baltimore City.
talking about moving low income families there just means crime so yeah no ill pass the city has been plagued with crime and talking about giving this and that to people based on skin color. So they steal my tax money but dont fix potholes. Yeah no thanks I won't spend a dime.

It was beautiful in the 70s when they finished the harbor area... all the tall ships in 1976, good times..
I hope Baltimore Heritage will use its voice and platform to save the Inner Harbor for the benefit of the public.
I love how they decorated the jury waiting rooms at the courthouse with posters from the past City Fairs, including a copy of the one featured here!
Yes! I saw that myself while serving and felt a nostalgia even though never having experienced the fairs. A re-enactment would be awesome.

I used to enjoy the annual BGE Light Festival Art Walk along Baltimore's Inner Harbor when I used to live nearby in Laurel.
I moved to Baltimore a couple of years ago from a city with great connection to the sea, and I always thought Inner Harbor as the place in town with most potential. IMHO, the whole marketplace area (or at least most of it) should be torn down to make room for bigger open spaces. It's already bad enough that we have that hideous WTC building by the water completely cutting the flow of people in that area... Just imagine that beautiful park by Fed Hill all around the harbor...
I remember watching the first Pride of Baltimore being built at the end of Harbor Place, over where the Science Center is today.
Baltimore should be managed bye a city manager and you sir knowing the history of Baltimore would make a great Mayor of Baltimore

I miss old Baltimore! I watched the Inner Harbor get constructed from the windows of the News American building. It caused a lot of traffic for their delivery drivers 😂
I remember when the B&O RR would deliver boxcar loads of newsprint paper to the rear of the News-American building via their Pratt St. trackage.
Could that have been a young Johns looking out over the harbor at the end of this excellent video?
Harbor could be a beautiful place. A museum, a giant ferris wheel, restaurants, wedding venue, bars, hotels ect. Make it like Annapolis with mixing retail and restaurants with old history and Baltimore traditional aspects.
Johns do you have segment on the Old Fish Market down near the Power Plant?
Climate change, sea-level rise and flooding must be primary concerns for any new development in this area.

So the parking lots worked because they became public space for fairs and other events, not because they provided parking. There’s a lesson there.
Well done Beautiful history lesson. Why does it seem it was once peaceful there, but it has changed into Lib control. Fix the crime first
