Is it legal to use a VPN? I know some computer experts who laugh at such a question, but I think it’s a very important question to ask.
At its core, a VPN or “Virtual Private Network” is just an encrypted way to access the internet. You would agree that everybody is allowed to put a lock on their door or a password protection on their computer, right?
Well then why would it be illegal to protect your internet access with a VPN? If you’re watching this video from the United States, Europe, Australia or about roughly 70% of the world, a VPN is absolutely, unequivocally, 100%, legal.
Despite any perceptions you might have otherwise, there is nothing wrong with using a personal VPN to access the internet. In fact, I highly recommend you do.
*When is Using a VPN Illegal?*
There are two I’m going to mention here.
1) What you do with a VPN can be illegal. Think of it like driving a car. Of course, driving a car is legal! But what about using that car as a getaway vehicle for an armed robbery? You get my point?
In the same way, using a legal VPN to illegally download music and movies is, well…illegal. That makes sense, right? That’s the easy one.
2) There’s one more instance where the legality of a VPN is somewhat questionable, and that’s in countries where internet is strictly controlled. Big brother is always watching.
Think China or Saudi Arabia. Both of these countries have governments which tightly restrict internet access and the use of a VPN to circumvent those restrictions can be considered an anti-government act. Now that’s not to say that people don’t use VPNs there. In fact, it’s quite common for foreigners living in those countries to subscribe to a VPN service. For the local people, though, it can be a dangerous thing to use a VPN.

Possibly, but more than likely they won't do anything about that.

It might be against the terms of service, but it's not illegal per se.

It’s technically against the terms of service with Netflix, but they’ve never done anything about that. You’re not doing anything “illegal” though.

I'm not sure I understand. You can easily search on Facebook or Reddit for VPN help groups, but often it's just better to talk with customer support for the VPN you use. As for legality, as I said in the video, you can do anything legal on a VPN and it is legal. Anything that is illegal to do does not automatically become legal just because you use a VPN.

I am more interested in the case you use a vpn to watch a show on netflix that your country doesn't have access to. That is such a common thing for youtubers to advertise. Sounds like a violation of their terms of service.

You mentioned that using a VPN to illegal download music or movies is illegal. Okay, but how would any authorities find out who I am? If I'm using a VPN, won't I just look like some random dude in Sweden or something? Can they follow a trail back to my actual public IP? And how likely is it that someone would go to that trouble for illegal music downloads?
Most internet users are under the mistaken assumption that it's easy to be anonymous online. The truth is that it's getting harder and harder. A VPN is a good step, but it's not foolproof. Also, it's not that "someone" will go through the trouble, it's large trade associations and record labels/movie studios that have a vested interest in protecting their intellectual property. Your ISP can and will issue you a DMCA notice for illegal downloading even if you use a VPN.
@@AllThingsSecured incorrect. I've been torrenting for years using VPNs and never been issued a DMCA notice. I'm also in a discord with over 40,000 other people that torrent and NONE have gotten a DMCA from using a VPN. Don't spread false information.

Amazon on the other hand is more direct: 3. ... Amazon will use technologies to verify your geographic location. You may not use any technology or technique to obscure or disguise your location.

+Tagnen Josephs There’s nothing illegal about accessing content from outside the US, but you might find it difficult. If the CW network detects your use of a proxy, they might not let you stream, but in those cases I just switch VPN servers and I can usually get it to work. Hope that helps!

Here's my two cents: if you're paying for the service (and Netflix is a paid service), then it's a grey area. You're going against Netflix's terms of service, but they know that tons of people do it. They could terminate your account, but they're not going to come after you in the court of law.
Also, I would advise against a free VPN. Just remember: you get what you pay for and those free VPNs are making their money somewhere. More than likely they're selling your information in some way.

Legal from what perspective? It depends on who is locking the content. If it's a government locking the apps, it might be considered illegal. If it's just the playstore enforcing regional content, it's merely thumbing your nose at their Terms of Use.

According to their Terms of Service, no. I think of it this way: if you're using the free version of Spotify then there's a bit of a moral dilemma. If you're a paying subscriber, I say it's perfectly fine.

It’s not against national law, if that’s what you mean but might be against the Netflix terms of use, but it’s written so vague that you can’t be sure. The worst that can happen is that they’ll terminate your Netflix account, but that has yet to happen.

Bypassing geo-restrictions is not illegal, it's the burden of the broadcaster to ensure a legitimate audience for advertisers. If, however, the content you are streaming is illegal content (i.e. you're bypassing a paywall) then technically it is not right. Does that make sense?

Banned by whom? By a government? Then yes, it would be illegal. If it was geoblocked by a company, though, it's not illegal per se, just against the terms of use. The worst that can happen in that case is that they ban you from playing the game again if you get caught.

Hard question to answer. My personal thoughts are that if you bought the game, you have the right to play it wherever.
The thing is the game is beta and yet to be released soon, i wanna try it for in game test to try it but after i downloaded it it says “unavailable to your region”
