Thats the best advice we can get? Don't answer your phone? How about the cell phone providers provide security to their customers!

0475Mike There isn't really a defense against these types of scams, there's no way to tell if it's a disguised number or a friend/relative

I only answer numbers I recognize. Period. As to the rest you probably don't know this but they can always leave a message! The never do though. They're telemarketers.

@@jonathonstone1 How is it the carriers can't tell if it's a spoof? I get a call from someone, I let it ring through, I call back and he says he didn't dial and was just sitting around, then I get a pre-recorded message from that number a minute later that wasn't him. Totally spoofed. How is it carriers can allow it? How can their own technology that they built have cracks like this that allow 100% spoofing?

@@jonathonstone1 Why would you even state that the carriers are not me? Do you think anyone believes they are phone service carrier? What a strange statement. Also how can the carrier not know which number is calling me? That's like saying UPS and FedEx can't tell which location a package was shipped from, and the person shipping it can change in their system where it was picked up or dropped off.

the biggest victims are elderly people. I have told older relatives for years about call spoofing and they still don't understand how it works.
The most common form of spoofing is the dialing software will automatically populate a random phone number that matches the same area code and phone exchange (same town/city) that they dialing too, so an elderly person might think it is a neighbor and pickup the phone. I don't answer calls from someone I don't now anymore. If a telemarketer keeps calling, eventually I will pick up and play the sound file that is online, that says this number has been disconnected and then release the call.

Simple Plan. You call from a number I don't know? You have ONE CHANCE to leave a voice message. (Because I DO NOT ANSWER my phone PERIOD!) You don't leave a voice message? You get blocked. And yes, they can change their numbers.....but I can block 'em all!....LoL! And I don't wait until a weekend where I have noting to do to block numbers...I do it right there and then! This way they have no choice but to call me from another number.....which will just end up on my blocked juice today!!

There is actually a fairly simple way to stop this. Our government needs to tell the Indian government that if they don't fix this problem in, say, 6 months, we will slap a 100% tariff on all goods coming from India. Like the old joke about the donkey, first you need to get their attention.

I have a samsung galaxy- provider - Sprint. You can block all incoming calls not on your contact list. The down side is if you give your cell phone number out you must immediately add that person or business to your contact list. It's too late for me since I've had that number for many years and but I passed this on to a friend who just set up a new account and she said it works.

  • @Smokey4462

The surprising thing is that it is legal. "The United States Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009 states that spoofing a phone number is allowed as long as the person is not “knowingly transmitting misleading or inaccurate caller identification information with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongly obtain anything of value…” Once it is proven a spoof caller violated this act, their actions are considered illegal and they would have to pay the penalty of $10,000."
Of course, that begs the question of identity theft or causing harm to the reputation of some innocent person. So why don't they change the law, make it illegal and begin to prosecute some cases?
