When reporters actually reported the news! RIP to all
In Gordon Lightfoot's biography, the story was told of how Gord met a comely lass after his performance and went home with her for the night. The next day when they heard the news of the murders, both he and the woman were severely shaken as she only lived a few streets away from Sharon’s house.
Hard to believe it's been 55 years! Paul would be almost 55. If only the end of Once Upon A Time had been reality...
Yes! My age. I was born in October 1969
Scott…. While enjoy all your videos… this one is really cool. Cheers! Keep up the great work!
Lance is a very good friend. To you AND to us!!
Sad circumstances and heartbreak for victims families. A sad day in g California.
I loved that movie, because it gave an ending to that night that we all wish had happened. I cried at the end. I just turned 15 when the crimes took place and lived a half a mile from the Spahn ranch. I just never got over all that Manson shit. Put a dark cloud over my teen years.
It was my 7th birthday on August 8, 1969. It's my 62nd birthday today. I became so interested in the story and think of them every year. RIP 🙏
Happy birthday!!
@@reneeo7736 thank you!
Across the pond on August 8, 1969, one of the most famous ever album covers was shot: the Beatles' Abbey Road in London.
I was born at almost the exact moment the iconic photo was taken.
Rest in peace to all the victims of those two horrendous nights such innocent souls 😢😢😢
As a 14 year old preparing to enter my freshman year in high school, the summer of ‘69 was full of unforgettable events! My thoughts turn to the victims today, especially the youngest- infant Paul and Steven Parent. I was especially affected reading and hearing about their deaths- who would be so merciless? Who would harm a pregnant woman? And poor Steven just out of high school from the East San Gabriel Valley where I lived! Today I will visit the cemetery where my parents are and where Steven is buried and pay my respects.
I'm from El Monte, Bryant Rd., where Steven lived❤
Same here....about to enter freshman year in high school (same age). Remember the marches taking place as the new year rolled around and witnessed the first "Earth Day" in April of 1970. The days were long but the years have been short.
Thanks for remembering this 55th memorial anniversary, Scott. Helter Skelter is an event that never fully goes away.
Reading through some of these clippings and articles, just proves that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Those newspaper clippings were not only a delight but they were an experience. Thank You Scott.
RIP 🙏 to all of the victims. They are all loved ❤and missed
Newspapers are a lost art... I know they still exist, but they are mostly ignored or read online. My reading years started at 4 years old with the newspaper. My dad said I picked up the newspaper, he thought, to mimic him, but I sad "no, dad, I weed it".... he humored me... but he was flabbergasted when I read from the newspaper about a lady getting married. He said I read it word for word. I read the newspaper every day sometimes more than one copy. I miss them....My point to my ramblings is... We MUST preserve these printed documents of our history. One of the most treasured things that moved with me to Germany is my local newspaper on the day JFK was unalived.
My Grammy would be 111 years old today. I wish I would've asked her how she felt, living in Ventura CA, about such news the day after her birthday.
Please 🙏 remember these beautiful people for who they were and no what happened to them
I’m a little obsessed with this too! My dad was in Vietnam in 1969 this was before I was born. Watching from Sydney Australia ❤️
I'd love for Scott to do a multi episode podcast series on the Manson murders. His Helter Skelter documentary is the best I've seen on the subject, Whole podcast episodes on Benedict Canyon, The year 1969, the leadup to the murders, the Manson Family, the victims and lastly the Court case. A podcast with no time restraints and Scotts knowledge would be incredible.
Karina Longworth has an amazing detailed 12 part series about the Manson murders called "Charles Manson's Hollywood" on her podcast You Must Remember This. Really worth checking out! I'd love to see a collab between both of them.
@@warclassics Oh wow, thank you
I agree, he does such a great job with all the Manson information as well as other topics.
@@warclassics Yes it is amazing.
Great work as usual, Scott! This is what you do for all of us. Thank you again. RIP to all that lost their lives on this tragic day in America.🙏
Incidentally Scott, August 8, 1962 was Marilyn's actual funeral, so this tragic day would be her 7th memorial. You already know that because that is what you do here. ❤
This was a great idea! I was 15 and remember it all too well. 😮
I remember watching The Fearless Vampire Killers when I was a kid.
Same but I wouldn't find out about the murders until many years later. I get angry everytime I see Sharon's beautiful face. 😢
This is great! Also, that 60’s organ riff was so groovy! ❤️ out to the victims.
Man - that $579 entertainment center would be the equivalent of almost $5K today! Plus, that Camp Lejeune thing is interesting...
A microwave, called a radar range back then was more than that. 😮
@@trent3872 I was just watching one of those movies in the video - The Ghay Deceivers, and I was shocked to see a microwave on top of the ranger like we have it today. They did not seem to advertise microwaves and microwavable meals until the 80's. That was one creepy movie! It was billed as a comedy, but horror movie fits it better.
Interesting and sad. The ads in the paper really brought back memories. Thanks for sharing…!
So much work went into this video. Thank you for taking the time to share with us!!
Thanks!Scott Michaels for remembering the victims on this tragic day 55 yrs ago . They are not forgotten
Thank you so much ❤️
@@DearlyDepartedTours your welcome Scott
Oh, the newspaper clippings and ads were a treat and a half. This was done so well. Now that I am over 55, I would love to beam myself back to this era and live in these times. Sitting around reading the Sunday paper, answering ads, registers, ledgers, bring it all back. This brought back so many memories. The soothing music was wonderful. There were some nods. Pinon Hills with the lemonade reminded me of Lake Isabella, the AM/FM on the 8 foot console reminded me of the clock radio. This was quite nice.
Thank you, Scott 💞 Seeing these images from the Times really bring back memories for those us who still remember what our life was like before and after the tragic events of August 8-9. My big sister & I were just 14 and 8 that summer but our family lived in the West Valley at the time several miles away from Spahn Ranch so we have vivid memories of those days!
Scott, you do incredible work to keep these beautiful people and so many others memory alive. I think to myself only if we could wake them up somehow. Oh how different it would be for them. It’s as if they are suspended in time May they rest in perfect peace. God bless you Scott. Memory lane is so nostalgic even more so as we age. ❤🙏🏻
The Beach Boys on David Frost ~ WOW!
Thank you ❤😊Scott for your respect 🙏
That 'Widow ends battle to save town' story sounds like a 'Grey Gardens' documentary we never got. Hope she enjoyed her final years and left her money to cats.
Wow, I paused a read a lot of the articles... Canberra Australia even had a mention in a small article. Facinating..... thanks for your hard work Scott x
Thanks alot for that day info.
Wow! That was great content!
Brilliant way to remember August 8 & 9 1969.
Loved this!
Thank you Scott ! 💪♥️
Great video , Scott. Such a tragedy. Thank you for keeping their memories alive ❤
Excellent as always Scott xx much love x 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍 thinking of Sharon, Jay, and all the victims today
I still think that the importance of some of the people there, made that event a targeted hit. I just watched Valley of the Dolls the other day - and I liked it! The picture quality was so great that it seemed as if time had stood still. The clothes looked nice - and I usually hate 60's clothes. I always thought that dolls meant nice looking women, as in 'dolled up.' I had not idea what the movie was about, but Sharon Tate looked better in the film than in pictures. I was also shocked at her portrayal. It also showed 1960's CT, which was weird to see. But showing the struggle, to the ego, to the drugs to the destruction was enlightening - and the typical Hollywood story.
It's campy and crazy and fun. Critics hated it because it wasn't Shakespeare, but I didn't mind. Check out Be Kind Rewind's delve into the history of VOTD. You will love it!
You are a Master Storyteller.
I've always been intrigued by these murders even though they happened 5 years before my birth. I'm always watching videos on the Manson murders and any documentaries. Great Video you have here and thanks for sharing.
Same here! 4 years before I was born. I was super scared as a child but once I learned more, I became so intrigued!
To think that even with the chaos, those times were simpler times.
My question is why Lynette “squeaky” Fromme was allowed to not be tied to these murders. She also tried to assassinate Gerald Ford in 1975. Tried to break Charles Manson out of prison . She is alive and well and not incarcerated. Good tribute 🙏🏼
You can't tie someone to a murder that didn't participate.
@@RoyAH. He tied up Leno Labianca and had the others do the dirty work, just like he always did.
@@jude999 she knew about them, therefore an accomplice.
Very interesting to see the world from that day. You always ROCK. Hi Troy.
I was born the summer before the murders in Los Angeles, CA. This video gutted me, especially seeing the horoscopes for those who would be brutally murdered later that day. And the ads of a bygone era when Sears, Thrifty and Radio Shack were a thing, something most young people today will never know or or never experienced. Thanks Scott for another amazing, poignant eulogy to people who obviously mean so much to you.
Great work as always, Scott. Thank you.
This video is awesome. Reading all those old news clippings is amazing. They are way before my time by I still very much appreciate history.
Great work, once again, Scott !!!
❤ from Detroit. Love your channel.
I was 14 at the time. I lived in San Diego but my dad always read the LA times. Love your videos.
Fascinating and educational as always....great work Scott.
I’m 59 years old and I still remember them talking about this on the news. My mom and I were living in Bell California at the time and I remember my mom was separated from my dad or divorced. I can’t remember. But anyway, she was alone with me in our little place we lived in and I remembered she was really scared and she wanted us to move back to Huntington Beach near my grandma, but we didn’t end up moving until about four years later
Life just moving along. This always makes me terribly sad :( This is terrific Scott. :)
Well done Scott
Thank you so much for all you do.
I really enjoyed this Scott. Thank you for sharing.
I'll take one of those brand-new Ford Mustangs for $2270.
When I tell people I was born that weekend of the murders they kind of look at me and cringe, and then I say it wasn't all that bad. The very next weekend was Woodstock.
Wow another great one Scott👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Truly love your Channel Scott. Especially all the Manson stuff. I was not born until '76 but have always been fascinated by all of that sort of stuff.
Thoroughly enjoyed this deep dive!
I just can't stop thinking of the horror though. The fear and the pain. Rest well everyone
Scott this is amazing. As always impressed and thank you for sharing!
RIP to all the victims; you will never be forgotten ❤
loved this
I was born in ‘79, I remember when we had to look in the newspaper for everything: weather, tv schedule, wants ads, movies playing, obituaries. My dad always got The Fresno Bee, San Francisco Chronicle, & sometimes The Los Angeles Times.
We lived in California for 2 years in 68 and 69 and as an 8 and 9 year old I remember seeing news all over about these murders. Only years later did I learn my Aunt and Uncle lived very near the events of that day!
Hi Scott. Still digging what you do and the assurance theres still like-minded, intelligent, and classy death hags like me out there. 😉
Cool concept and very well executed! The music works really well.
A week before Woodstock ✌️
Great video, Scott....!!
This was interesting reading the news articles and advertising from the fateful day.
My mother was pregnant with me too in August 1969, the Beatles were photographed on the zebra crossing in Abbey Road London on 8/8/69 which would end up being used on the lp cover of the same name. My thoughts have been on these souls all day. I'm glad you posted this video, I liked the Ford LTD advert. This story doesn't seem to get any coverage here in England. Thank you, and keep up the good work. I enjoy your shows. PS, the great train robbery, happened here on 8/8/63.
I was 6 months old in August 1969! This was an awesome video!❤
Thanks for the video Scott. Love how you find new and different aspects to look at the murders each anniversary. It's like a time capsule.
Scott, as always you are the best! Your historic understanding of the events, people, and the times they took place as well as the evident caring you have for the folks impacted by these events is amazing. I sure miss your tours, but am happy for the wonderful videos you share with us. I hope you and Troy are healthy and happy! Be Well.
we in my family learned about Helter Shelter from my father a regular reader of The Los Angeles Herald Examiner. a now non existent news paper .
Yes, the same with my family- the LA Herald Examiner! If I remember, it had a daily late afternoon/early evening edition, which is why my father subscribed to it so he could read the latest news while relaxing after work. Wondering if there was an evening August 9th Herald Examiner edition on that day? I
@@gonnacry96tears my father would send me out to get the Harald and a six pack of sodas for dinner. he would hand me a dollar bill and say, "keep the change" 😁
@@gonnacry96tears you may want to look at the Harald Examiner archive's if there is such a thing. USC might have them .
Beautifully put together video, Scott. I was only 2 yo when this tragedy happened, but I remember the aftermath in the early 70s well. I was a child of the LA entertainment community; the adults refused to discuss this in front of us kids and the subject was forbidden from even being brought up. We grew up truly believing Manson was a real life bogeyman because what else could make the adults so fearful? To this day, I am a bit fearful of men with beards. Bless you for keeping the memories of Steven, Jay, Abigail, Voytek, Sharon and Baby Paul alive. ❤️ I also want to add that one time I read that the famous photo of the Beatles crossing Abbey Road that was subsequently used for the cover of the “Abbey Road” album was taken on August 8,1969. An interesting bit if trivia, if true given the importance of the White Album to this tragic story. Keep working, Scott! We need our historians!❤️
I always love your videos! And any history, especially of Los Angeles, where I grew up., and still live. I was 5 years old, not a care in the world, living only 12 miles away from the murders. My sister was 13 years old, and was afraid to walk to school after that. I vaguely remember seeing it on the news on our only black and white TV. Both my brother and father have birthdays in August, we have photos from that year at my grandmother's house celebrating my brother's birthday. The end brought tears to my eyes 😢
Thanks for posting this Scott! So interesting, yet very sad at the same time. 😢
That's really cool going back and just seen everyday life August 8th 1969. I'm sure you probably know this but that was also the day that the photograph was taken of The Beatles for their Abbey Road album!
I get really sad when I think about these senseless killings. I wish the ending in “Once Upon a Time” was what really happened that night. I was only two when this happened. Thank you for telling this story so we can remember. ❤
Gosh. When you put what was on TV during the murders. I wanted to cry. Excellent job on this. So, so poignant.
Thank you, Scott. This was terrific!!!! I really miss seeing your more frequent videos and unboxings.
The one person who is so often forgotten in this tragedy is the young 18yo man down at the gate-house, Steven Parent. Steven had been visiting the property's caretaker, William Garretson who was staying in the guest house.
What a fantastic video in every way, it was an honest to goodness ride in a time machine. Very well done as always 🌟🏆⭐️
Amazing how some think alike, I always wanted to know what was on TV that night...really.
Lots and lots of research for this one! Thanks Scott!
The headlines look exactly like they do today. Same issues.
I can't believe it has been that long. I was eight years old.😢
Wow! This was really something. I can't remember where I was though when this happened, which is understandable since I was 17 and probably too self absorbed. Loved the newspaper. Grand opening of 3 Thrifty drug stores, that beautiful console tv/stereo and those automobile prices! The news was pretty much the same. You can see here too the gradual decline of womankind into the pits. Noteworthy too that they called the murders ritualistic. They certainly were Ollie. Great video.
Ahhh!!! Thriftys!!!! I loved their ice cream...double malted crunch was so good!! I live in Iowa now and there is a small ice cream shop than makes really awsome ice cream. But I still crave that Thrifty Double Malted Chocolate Crunch!
Interesting the newspaper articles and the footage of the area.
Fascinating slice (no pun intended) of history!
This was a unique way to remember this tragic anniversary 😢 💔
I sent you the TIME magazine dated AUG. 8 1969 a few weeks ago.
Hey Lance. It’s in a box. I haven’t had a chance yet. Looks like I’ve got next years video thanks to you.
I was 21 years old. Another year that was scary. 1966. I live in North West Indiana. We had Richard Speck killing the student nurses and the mysterious murder of Senator Percy's daughter in her bed. The house was in Winteka.
Thank you for the great videos Scott!
This is awesome, I was only 7 yrs old in Texas when this happened. I love the throwback nostalgia for that day in history❤
Incredible History Lesson...
Enjoyed Watching this ! 🎙🎶🥂
RIP to all the victims. It was the end of innocence. Everything thing changed.
❤Thank you Scott. I have always been obsessed with this as well. I used to be told I looked like Sharon Tate when I was younger, and have always felt connected to her. My boyfriend’s Dad was a barber, and my boyfriend still has his Dad’s collection of Jay Sebring products.:-) He was trained using the Sebring method as well. Best wishes to you, and yours!❤You are my favorite TH-camr!
I was born in LA many years ago. I remember the murders and the trials. Things were so crazy in the 60’s. In many ways, reminds me of today.
It's amazing how today's generation has no idea and cannot relate to this tragic historic event ....but we do.
