This might be total pessimism on my part, but I always assumed the whole "bad luck to have a woman on board" was born from the assumption that locking up 60 men inside a shitty wooden box floating on liquid death for several months on end, _with_ a woman on board, would probably not be fun for the woman...

Sophie: "It's based on a book, I think."
Yes, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. When I was 8 I had a severely broken leg that got infected because of my primary doctor. As a result I spent some serious time in the hospital. While there, one of my sisters gave me "Classics Illustrated" which is basically a graphic novel treatment of books like Treasure Island. A great way to teach kids about 19th century literature. None of those Classics Illustrated stories came up in junior or senior high because my teachers had other priorities.

Not sure if anyone mentioned but the Captain gets to chose their first mate not their crew when a trip is being financed by a outside source. Unless they buy the boat which crew attached which is something the doctor did not do here.
She even makes it abundantly clear in her first scene with the Doctor and Jim when she says, “I dont much care for this crew, YOU hired.” Talks about how they shouldn’t share information about the treasure with the crew, And goes on to say they are a, “Luducrus parcel of driveling galutes.”
But it’s written so cleaverly that when your watching her say these things we are more focussed on wether of not she is evil and miss her well formulated warnings.

Similar techniques are still used in anime. Some of the air combat in Youjo Senki for instance has 2D animated characters (or 3d for small background characters) in a 3D environment The cityscape in Ep 8, the clouds in the big battle from Ep 11 and the final battle in the movie both really show this off. The 3D graphics software Blender also has "grease pencil" which is a set of tools for similar kinds of 3D/2D hybrid animation. You can see an example here: th-cam.com/video/pKmSdY56VtY/w-d-xo.html or here th-cam.com/video/KlHDe4KqQ64/w-d-xo.html So Disney isn't doing it any more, but other people are.

The bad luck is a historically accurate portrayal of sailors especially the timeframe that the original Treasure Island would have been based. There were a lot of superstitions especially among the lower class people of the time who would have made up most of the crew. And generally dudes who sail for months at a time without seeing a woman would think anything that bad happened on a new expedition where a woman joined them would have blamed everything that went wrong on the voyage on her. Oh hey, I haven't seen this in the comments, but... There was going to be a sequel. Disney pulled the plug when this movie wasn't the next Lion King.
If you look around online, somebody made a documentary about what the sequel was going to be, putting together the photos of the story-board (what little there was of it) and the basis for the plot. I personally think it would have been great, and I'm upset that it never got made just because it wasn't a box office hit.
Hell, after the absolute trials that the producers went through just to get this movie made (they literally went and made things like Aladdin on the command of Disney in order to be given the budget for this one, then Disney didn't even advertise it, which is why the movie did badly at the box office), it should have been given that chance.
It's a good movie, and it should have been given more than it got. And because it wasn't given what it deserved, we don't get the sequel we deserve either.

No, but I grew up reading Calvin & Hobbes as a kid, I was used to being introduced to words I didn't understand. I either used context clues or, if I was particularly curious, looked them up and built my vocabulary.
12:48 - Even as someone whose dad left as a child, it was never this scene that hurt to see because I was 1 year old and never had any memory of him. It was the shot of the mom, crying, wondering what in the Hell she was going to do, alone. That shit stings.
20:26 - Tell that to Jumping Spiders. Or the hundreds of millions of insects that would get to you if spiders weren't helping to keep them in check.
    22:26 - See: Pharaohs

Fun fact in the original script the male doctor was actually going to be shown pregnant in fact they animated a scene but audiences were confused so they reanimated it.

There was originally going to be a sequel but it was scrapped because of how badly this movie tanked at the box office. As I understand it, this movie had a similar fate to Megamind. A big name movie came out at the same time and overshadowed it.

Did anyone else notice that Jim’s back hair piece is exact like Anikan Skywalker’s from Star Wars Episode ll: Attack Of The Clones? And when you think about it Jim and Anikan have fairly similar characteristics.

I think Silver is a old Jim in some way. He seeing himself in that boy who is as lost than him. I think Silver was a Jim who was never helped by anyone, who has all his life lessons lerned in the hard way and has to hold on to his potentionaly impossible dream to not sink, and it's like that it's became a obsession. He ends up to have only that left. And that why he was ready, at first, betrayind Jim even if he really loves him: he finally reach the targed after all this time, his sufferings and sacrifices. But he finally chose Jim, not only because he likes him, but also because I think he wished someone had done it for him when he needed it. I think it's why too he takes Jim under his wing, not only because he's loving him and has a link with him, not only because he's seeing in him the seeds of greatness, but also because he's seeing in Jim the potential to become like him if nobody help him, and don't wanna that for him. I think I have this feeling because the french version of the song (I'm French) don't has the feeling of Jim, but point of view of Silver and what he's trying to transmit to his boy. If someone is interessed, there is a link of the french version with eng subs: th-cam.com/video/xjyVs6jR3os/w-d-xo.html

If you want a quirky and unique animated movie, may I suggest Twice Upon a Time (1983). It’s truly one of a kind. Unfortunately, I don’t know if it’s streaming anywhere, so you’ll probably have to find it on disc.

Sophie... I dont know if you'll ever see this comment, its beet two years after you posted this and a half an hour since I found it.
But... *there is a sequel to Treasure Planet!*
    Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon
Its a game, but one of the few movie spin-off game that actually good.
Bottom line? If you want more Jim and Silver being a father-son duo thats where you need to go.

  • @waywander9618
    @waywander9618 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm surprised there's only one guy mentioning Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon here, it doesn't connect *that* well with the movie story-wise, but hey, Jim is commanding ships now and Silver... let's just say he does big things not to spoil it, Amelia is also back in the navy as an admiral for some reason.
This game sets the universe better though, if you're interested in just "MORE Treasure Planet!" x)
And oh is this game big on gameplay, it's probably THE Best movie tie-in game, whole lot of fun having battles with those solar sailing ships.

This movie was the biggest fail at disney animation. After this movie they didn't do 2d animation anymore with some exceptions (princess and frog, winnie the pooh). 3D animation was cheaper and they always bring more money. The income wasn't even enough to cover the production budget

This has a lot of similarities to another Disney movie called " Shipwreched" because they're both based of the same stories... so the adult tv show "Black Sails". Love this one.... pretty sure I got to see this one in theatres. Another semi space adventure that's good is "Titan A.E.". I'd also recommend "Quest for Camelot" and "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within".
