    What’s ludicrous is that this was considered one of Disneys biggest failures

    • @AdamNisbett
      @AdamNisbett ปีที่แล้ว +18

      What I’ve read is that Disney was wanting to get away from hand done animation style and into CGI animation and so kinda intentionally skipped marketing for this so that it would do poorly and they’d have an excuse to cancel future sequel plans.

    We almost got a sequel to this. Plans were drawn up, original drawings were done for the story and characters, a story was settled on, and they were going to cast William Dafoe as the villain (coming right off his villain role in Spider-Man btw). They were even going to do a tv show. But all of that changed when the movie bombed at the box office, which was completely Disney's fault because they didn't even advertise the film properly.
    And to be honest, I'm actually happy that we didn't get a sequel or a tv series. What made this film so special was that it was simply a story about a young teenager trying to make his mother proud and discovering a father-figure along the way of his adventure, while also truly learning. There was no love interest or forced villain, all of it was organic and very different from a normal Disney movie. The sequel apparently was going to have a love interest and a villain who sounded rather cliched, although the casting sounded great (love Dafoe's work!). It just sounded like a lame way to do a sequel.
    Although, I am open to a live-action film of this (including the Atlantis film) if Disney gets their sh!t together and stops with the woke politics.

    I love the mix of Age of Exploration style ships and technology mixed with Sci-fi. As somebody who has a fascination for both it works really well togheter. I get it might not work for others but the 70-30 split they aimed for just looks really cool to me. I also love the idea of making Jim slightly older and give him an absent father and therefore deepening the relation to Silver. Really a great coming of age story.

      @@AdamfromFWCI I can dwfinitely see that. In this case the distance of the two eras/aesthetics is a lot bigger though so I get that for some people it might be to much. I love thos styles of ships and how they lived on them. A game that is fantastic for that is "the return of the Obra Dinn which delves really deep into the life onboard a ship/crew members etc while basically being a detective story trying to figure out the events that took place onboard the ship.

    "Look at you! Glowing like a solar fire. You're something special, Jim. You're gonna rattle the stars, you are!"
    Fun Fact: Dame Emma Thompson was pregnant during several recording sessions, which is how Captain Amelia turned out at the end of this movie.
    Disney Cinematic Universe Fact: When Jim's (Austin Majors) mother (Laurie Metcalf) sits with him on his bed to read his book, on his bookshelf, there is a Stitch doll in an astronaut suit.
    What Script Fact: The contest between Jim (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Silver (Brain Murphy), each coaxing Morph (Dane A. Davis) to come to them so they could obtain the map, was ad-libbed.
    Cameos Cameos Fact: When Jim (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Dr. Doppler (David Hyde Pierce) arrive at the space-port, they get directions from two characters using a ladder. These are caricatures of directors John Musker (at the top of the ladder) and Ron Clements (holding the bottom of the ladder).
    Animation Technical Breakthrough Fact: The humanoid characters are all hand-drawn. John Silver's (Brain Murphy) cyborg leg, arm, eye, and the robot B.E.N. (Martin Short) are flat-rendered CGI. The ship was created using Disney's "Deep Canvas" process, something that is beyond the scope of this comment to explain. In some scenes, all three types of animation appear simultaneously.

    • @SpiritedHeart94
      @SpiritedHeart94 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To add to this, the only other Disney movie (that I know of) that used deep-canvas animation more extensively was Disney’s Tarzan. Basically from what I remember learning about it is that they create a 3D model of the setting (forest, jungle, ship, etc.) and overlay the artwork on top of it.

    There actually was a sequel planned out for this movie, but due to Treasure Planet being box office failure - which was because of a mix of poor marketing (they gave away the whole plot in the trailers and released it in *december* when it’d clearly work better as a summer movie) and petty drama among the higher-ups (gotta love it 🙄).
    Also fun fact in case it hasn’t been mentioned: this movie only contains 2 songs with lyrics in it, and neither are sung by any of the characters (they’re performed by the band ‘The Goo-Goo Dolls”), which is practically unheard of in Disney films (the only exceptions that I can think of being “Tarzan” and “Atlantis The Lost Empire”).

It came out the same year as Stitch however Stitch was HEAVILY marketed and hardly any advertising was done for Treasure Planet. The trailer they did put out contained a spoiler showing Silver as the bad guy.
    It's even more shitty that Disney did that because this was a passion project for its creators. They wanted to do Treasure Island in space but Disney told them they had to make a couple other movies first then they'd let them.

    I'm not entirely sure if anyone told you how it was made or not but Musker and Clements (the directors) had been trying to make this film for years. It was their dream/passion project but they had to keep working on other films like Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules before Disney would allow them to do so.
    They came in with the idea that the story would be set in 70% Victorian Times (like the original Treasure Island story) and 30% in space (thus the 70/30 rule was made for this film so that every aspect of this film would be 70% old fashioned and 30% sci-fi; even the music is 70% classical music and 30% new music and the animation is 70% hand-drawn and 30% CG especially with Silver's cyborg parts and B.E.N.).
    There were sadly multiple reasons why this film didn't do well and, admittedly, all of that blame could be put on Disney because 1) the heads didn't fully believe in the project so 2) the marketing for this film was horrible and spoiled a lot and 3) the film would come out in a time where fully CG films were taking over the animation industry and other animation companies were also in the process of switching to CG films because that's what was bringing in the audience (this came out around the time when Monster's Inc, Shrek, Jimmy Newtron, Ice Age, and the like were being released with box office numbers that were completely overshadowing hand-drawn films like Atlantis, Treasure Planet, and Road to El Dorado with the only exception to the rule being Lilo and Stitch).

    If you've only seen the theatrical versions and have not seen the extended versions before, I'd like your opinions on how those extra scenes make it better or worse.
    If you've never seen them: the theatrical version is okay for "The Fellowship of the Ring" but I must insist on the extended versions for "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King" because I have seen many reactors ask questions about "what's going on?" in a reaction, looked for the answers in their comments, and found many spoilers from well meaning super-fans. With the extended versions, most of those common questions get answered.

    Treasure Planet was adapted from a book called Treasure Island written in 1882 by a Scotsman, the name of Robert Stevenson, lending to the age of exploration thematics. An amazing coming of age tale and a splendid addition to the corpus of British story, art and culture which, though rarely acknowledged as such, has provided those willing to listen - sometimes even those who won't - with immeasurable soulstenance, not a real word, but it should be. The themes explored within were certainly of their time, yet also transcendent of, describing the human drive for adventure, relation and self-discovery which is why it lended so well to adaptation, space being an easy and just as deadly substitute for the open ocean. It's likely the case that European sailors read this very story to their eventual sons inspiring them to chart their own destiny in a new far away and dangerous land with slim to no odds of survival let alone safety, although the age was rapidly drawing to an end as the story was penned. I watched this movie as a child and loved the classically British archetypal personalities expressed by the characters therein, and that they retained their original expressions from the source material, something rarely seen by modern adaptations by and for those deracinated from their cultural continuety. Dr. Doppler a man of science, John Silver, titleless yet aspires to riches, Mr. Arrow being a straight shooter, only the Captain was given a different character profile although the change was done well embodying a charming upperclasswoman ethos rather than a brooding, semi-sullen man carrying the weight a lifetime of hard often isolating voyage. Some of his character rubbed off as the inspiration for parts of Jim character, for example its the Captain rather than Jim who negotiates with silver in the book after the mutiny. Every half decade I like to go back and watch this film, to serve as a kind of unchanging benchmark to help me reflect on how I and the country around me is changing, the latter far more quickly.

    i see that u love this movie.
    Tldr. U dont want to get a sequel. Simply because they will never get even close to half of quality that this move have. And it would probably made bad look on this movie which i dont want to happen. Gatekeeping is bad but not at this case

    Not enough movies nowadays actually showcase the importance of a father figure or mentor for young men. With how most of the West has governments that, through law, pretty much encourages divorce, the amount of kids growing up without a father is through the roof. Women nowadays are practically rewarded for breaking the contract of marriage, so yeah. Generations of kids ruined as a result.

      The father in the book Treasure Island (of which this is a remake) died. The mother here was trying to make it as a widow.

    I remember seeing the trailers for this as a kid and not thinking much of it, but then I heard it was based on the classic Treasure Island, which I was a fan of, so had to see it and quite loved it.

      Speaking of space cowboy, he should see Cowboy Bebop too (the original anime, not the live-action remake)
