The Land Rover has been with me for around six years. It’s a little rough around the edges, but generally OK. I’ve done a bit of mechanical work to it over that time. Including reconditioning the engine, rebuilding the gearbox, rebuilding both axles and the braking system, and many other small fixes along the way.
But she has started to go downhill lately, particularly the condition of the body. Most of the body is aluminium, but steel is rusting rapidly.
So it’s time to do something about it…

Three Minutes and 12 seconds in - Here we have the best reason to own and drive a Series Land Rover. My 72 shorty put a smile on my face every time I got in it. I would go out for groceries and come back the pretty way on purpose. Had to sell it and it broke my heart. BUT I recently bought a reasonably original 109 truck, and happiness returns.

Very much looking forward to following this! I have a 1978 S3 109 that is in desperate need of a resto but she's such a fun workhorse, I can't bring myself to put her off the road for that long! Someday...

Geoffrey my dude, never before have I been so excited, and so blue balled in one five minute period. I’m embarrassingly hyped up for this project, but when I saw the video length (I appreciate it is just an intro) I felt deeply betrayed. I’m sure the next instalment will be as deeply satisfying as ever. Kudos mate.

I don't even know why I ended up watching your socket restoration (good thing it didn't come to you in "excellent" condition) but it led me to this. I love old Land Rovers & Jeeps. I hate all the new stuff & so glad you are saving this one!

    Geoffrey,
I laughed so hard I cried.
This does however explain your advanced level of mechanical skill, you own a series landie.
These things are the ultimate mecarno set with wheels, looking forward to the very in depth application of insulation and a heater suitable for the land of the fat bottomed bird.
Im enjoying your existing series, but this should be an epic.
    Have fun.

Every trip in a Landy is an adventure. Went on holiday this year in the wife's Nissan for a change. She asked what do you think - going in the Nissan? I didn't really notice - all very efficient etc, but oh so dull! For some reason you climb in yer Landy and all is good in the world. Looking forward to your S3 project. Cheers Craig

It looks like she's in pretty good condition so should be a great vehicle to rebuild... I've done a few from series 2s and 3s to my own 1992 Defender..
The defender was running great but as I work in a marine environment and I'll be handing it down to my children and so on I wanted to strip it down and paint and protect everything.
Mine always starts despite weather and does everything I want it to... good luck and I'll be watching for sure!

    I had a Land Rover.
Leaked rain like a sieve, pissed oil, guzzled fuel, freezing cold in winter, dripping with condensation and a crap heater on one side only. Had to drive with your elbow out the window as it wasnt wide enough to sit in square, unless you had a school boy body. Pedals offset so you sat twisted at the hip,
electrolitic action between the steel door frame and aluminium skin, creating rapid corrosion and the rear leaf springs made every attempt to bounce you out the seat!
Rear door dropped at the hinges due to the weight of the spare wheel, or you could mount it on the bonnet and sit on a cushion so you could see over it!
I thought i might cut it into pieces - it would fit in the bin easier that way!

This is obviously a labour of love . Practicality dictates that you rather rebuild an old Landcruiser . Those that come apart in bits like a toy. They are as tough as cowboy boots and as reliable as your mother.
A friend of mine worked at a an opencast potash mine in Botswana in the 70''s ,where they found the Landcruisers were the only survivors.
    Just a thought

Oh wow, a kiwi. Nice. New Zealand is one of the few places on the planet that a series vehicle still has as much utility today as the day it was born. I’ve seen a shocking number of them running around South Island. So much dirt track, such low speed limits, single lane bridges... it’s perfect.
