- Description
Short Video on our closet build.
We debated wallpaper vs standard Ikea backing but settled on fabric!
Not only was it more affordable, it was also easier to install, in our opinion!
No glue, no sticky wallpaper and we saved quite a bit of money doing it!
Pros
-Cost
-Variety was great
-Easy to install
-No wallpaper seams!
-Looks great
Cons
-Stability if you are just doing this to one - but you can always staple the fabric then nail the backing for added stability
-Lint, fabric picks up lint!
-Might need to invest in a nailer if you do not have one

The fabric backing looks great and expensive looking too. Good job. I was wondering why you chose fabric backing over wall paper when I watched your main IKEA wardrobe video
Wow this is great! Thanks so much! 🙌🏼
Glad you liked it!!
@@xacresestate Oh no dear, I LOVED it! What a great idea!
I've replayed this several times and it appears you are stapling on the good side of the fabric? If not, the back of the fabric looks just as beautiful as the front. In hind site, do you wish you had gone ahead and attached the ikea back after installing fabric so that if you press against the fabric, it doesn't pucker? Great buy for $6/metre and only $180 for the entire closet - even though that was 2 years ago.
Thanks! It's woven fabric not screen printed so the design shows up on both sides. Price was great and Canadian dollars! We found it on clearance and bought extra to make pillows and accents. The back of the cabinet is right up against the wall, so it is like have the backing there, you cannot tell the difference and does not move at all. The only time I regretted not putting the Ikea backing on was when we were standing the cabinet up, I would have liked some extra rigidity, but once it was in place and screwed to the other cabinets it was fine. If I only had 1-2 freestanding cabinets I would install the backing to give it a little more support. Next time I would install them just so I did not have to throw them out. (we also sold some). GL!
with the fabric you were not worried about mounting these to the wall itself? like ikea says it needs to be? wouldnt they fall over eventually? currently my husband I just bought our system and did NOT wanna install the backing it came with.. so this gives me a GREAT idea.. what is the exact measurement for the fabric u bought? thanks for the help! :)
Thank you! The fabric store we have here locally has a standard width for fabric rolls, our roll was 58" wide and we knew we had the 8' cabinets so we bought enough to cover the full length +/- a couple inches.( times 8 cabinets). You can still install the backing if you want after the fabric, one thing we didnt try was gluing the fabric to the backing but that might work as well. I secured the cabinets to the side walls and on top of the cabinets to the walls, didnt use ikea's metal brackets to secure to the wall inside the cabinet.. if it was 1 or 2 free standing cabinets it might have, but 4 screwed together wasn't going anywhere, although I did secure it to the walls above the cabinets for good measure. Best of luck with yours, Hope it turns out awesome!
Could you not put the backing behind the wall paper?
Yep I guess you could! Ours backed up to a wall so we ended up selling ours :)
@@xacresestate good job witg
