The incomparable Phil Collins producing and on drums.
and backing vocals!
I did not know that. Love him.
Not just him. His guitarist as a solo artist and with Genesis - Daryl Stuermer - is the one handling guitar duties.
Totally makes the song
Fun Fact: both Frida (“I Know There’s Something Going On”) and Agnetha (“Can’t Shake Loose”) had only one US Top 40 hit - and Russ Ballard wrote both of them.
This was huge and edgy in the early 80’s. Still has an edge of mystery
Drummer is Phil Collins, using a cymballess technique that he was pioneering at the time. This song was near the epitome of the early 80's music. So edgy at the time.
That big gated drum sound he pioneered on Peter Gabriel's "Intruder". And his guitarist Daryl Stuermer on guitar.
@@RhettAnderson Well... Gabriel took away his cymbals for that album. ...and producer Hugh Padgham had a lot to do with it, as well. He also worked on XTC's "Black Sea" album, which also featured something pretty close (but not quite there) to that gated drum sound. Great stuff and worthy of checking out. Cheers!
Cymbal-less drumming goes back a few years, i.e. You Can’t Hurry Love by The Supremes, A Good Thing by Fontella Bass or Maybelline by Chuck Berry. I know Collins did a cover of the Supremes song which is probably where he got the inspiration.
Yeah, this is basically a Phil Collins song with Frida singing lead. Great song, but I've always hated the muddy-sounding guitar solo--not sure what they were thinking with that one. Jay & Amber should also listen to Agnetha Faltskog's biggest solo record, "Can't Shake Loose", or maybe the more fun "The Heat Is On".
I never knew it was Phil Collins until very recently (after all these years), but when I found out it was like "Duh! Of course that's Phil Collins!" The 80s were the BEST.
Phil’s drumming makes this song. Frida is an amazing singer in her own right though. Such a great song.
Phil Collins produced this song and her album. Can you hear his drums? Great song!!!
And Daryl Stuermer on guitar, who played in Phil's solo band and was the touring guitarist in Genesis.
-yesss !-
You can hear Phil on backing vocals as well.
Never knew that but when I hear the drums it's like yeah that's Phil Collins alright
Can’t miss Phil
"If you want to leave then why don't you say? Your love is gone anyway."
Number 1 in France during 4 weeks !! A succes in France than any Abba songs will know !!!!!!! Amazing ! ❤️🔥🔥🔥
Frida is an actual princess and is more properly known as Her Serene Highness, Princess Anni-Frid Synni of Reuss, Dowager Countess of Plauen.
Anni- frid has such an interesting story. The daughter of a Nazi in occupied Norway, moved to Sweden to escapre reprisals for that. Became part of the biggest super group in the work and is now an actual Princess!
loved this song when it dropped! Phil Collins murdered the drums!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, yeah! I wore this one out back then! Phil's production of this song was killer!
This was such an underrated songs from the early 80s. Phil Collins on the drums made it fire.
40+ years later amazing it was just yesterday
The sheer DRAMA of this track. Frida''s vocals and Phil Collins' drums are such a potent combination.
...not just his drums, but he was doing backing vocals with Frida.
Agreed 100%!
Phil Collins, drums, vocal, and production.
Frida is lead vocal in Abba's The Visitors. A true masterpiece. A MUST MUST MUST
Agreed! One of the most unique edgy songs ABBA put out. All the more so with Frida's memorably haunting voice.
Loved this song when it came out; had NO IDEA it was THE Frida from Abba. Great pick!
yeah same here, had no idea it was Frida
Same! And I was a huge Abba fan, I should've known this lol
Same here 😮
@@drublood1807 You all should check out the album, "Something's Going On". Frida definitely knocked it out of the park with her performances on this album.
It's not often that you can just hear the beat and percussion of a song, and be able to identify the artist who is behind the production(when they are behind the scenes). But this is easily one of the songs where it is. For anyone who was familiar with Phil Collins in those days(either in Genesis, or as a solo artist), you can't help but get the Phil Collins vibes when you hear the drums, and the entire production of the song...and sure enough, Phil was on the drums, and was a producer of the track. 2 unlikely legends coming together!!!
And don't forget that on top of producing and doing the drum parts, Phil Collins also did the backing vocals alongside Frida in the chorus, you can hear his distinctive voice there...
I love that song!!!!!!!!!!!
Frida is Fabulous !!!!
Abba 1973-1979, then came back in 1981 that was Fridas only solo hit
Always loved this song. Never knew it was one of the ABBA singers. Learning every day.
Same here!
Great Job Frida!!!
The whole album was fantastic, all the songs were written for her by some of the biggest names in music at the time. Russ Ballard, Stephen Bishop,
Bryan Ferry, Phil Collins, Rod Argent. A pure 80s classic
Indeed it is a complete masterpiece.
One of the best albums of the 80s for sure.
I looooove this song!!!
ABBA👑 is amazing
Love ❤ FRIDA...
and..... Hey!
A new song of Agnetha came out last week: "Where we go from here"...
The boys (Benny & Björn) still working too ...
ABBA ❤ still alive!
❤️🇨🇱👍
You should also listen to „To turn the Stone“ from the same Album. And also „Även en blomma“ from her Solo-Album „Djupa Andetag“, released 1996. This Song has swedish lyrics, but you will love it!
Anni is also a Princess.
Love her song Threnody".
This was released when I was in college, I want to say 83. It was the midst of the MTV explosion and the new wave genre was very popular. Very cool stylistic departure from abba and her voice is haunting
I checked, came out in 82 lol
The album “Something’s Going On” was released on September 10, 1982 in the US. The song “I Know There’s Something Going On” was released on August 1, 1982 as a single, which was an immediate huge international hit. This song was played constantly on rock radio stations in ‘82 and ‘83.
Great review..The whole album this track comes from is just magnificent ❤
No1 in Switzerland 🇨🇭 1982 💙💛
Written by Russ Ballard from the group Argent, and with Mr Phil Collins on drums and production. Great song ❤️
Ace Frehley covered a couple of Russ Ballard s songs: "New York Groove" and "Into The Night". I also like Russ' 80s staple, "Voices".
@@byerenny he also wrote several other hits, including Rainbow's "Since You've Been Gone" and Kiss' "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" and was the lead vocalist on Argent's "Hold Your Head Up"
Speaking of Russ Ballard, he has a great song called “voices” that you guys should react to!!
Never knew Russ Ballard wrote this one, but MAN do I love "Voices". One of the more mysterious-sounding hits of the 80's. Kind of along the same lines as the later hit "All You Zombies" by The Hooters.
Love aces cover of “in the night” is great
Russ Ballards “voices” is also an awesome song from the 80s
Both women of Abba are beautiful and have great voices but my favorite was always Frida.
Mine too - I love Agnetha, but Frida always had a pure and more "classical" edge to her sound. Not to mention that you could always pick her out on an ABBA song because she always pronounced her Ys as Js! She could have sung opera, but ABBA made its four member rich beyond their wildest dreams.
the drummer on this song is Phil Collins and he produced this album of Frida's.
Her voice is super sharp and right to the point, without any trace of sentimentality, it's just REAL and RAW, I really love it. If you listen to the title track of ABBA's last album, The Visitors (a gloomy experiemental and futuristic masterpiece, unfortunately, it doesn't have any video), you get the same feeling. It was created a year before Something's Going On, which is from 1982, where ABBA were slowly dissolving due to the members' divorces, them having different creative ambitions etc.
ABBA was still together when this and the 'Something's Going On' album was recorded. They did record a handful of cool numbers but they were fast heading for a split (although they never formerly announced one.) Mo Foster is on that driving bass and he sadly passed away recently (RIP). This song spent so long on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that it actually outsold two or three #1's in 1983.
Right back where we started from by Maxine Nightingale from 1976 is another fun pop tune.
Now you're going wayyyy back. 1976 was such a wild year for pop music- so many different styles on the radio.
This is one of my Mom's favourite 80s songs. She sings it every time it comes on the radio, and just loves belting to the chorus! Thanks for reacting to it! HAPPY LABOR DAY!
that would be me too!! My girls say this about me. haha
Check out another song called Shine from the album of the same name. Frida is my favourite ABBA member. Agnetha's recorded a few solo albums as well Wrap Arms Around Me, Eyes Of A Woman, I Stand Alone, My Colouring Book and A
It's definitely an under-rated song.
Great great song by Frida from my freshman year in high school. 👍
Jay, don't forget your hero Barry Gibb turns 77 today
1983 may have been the best year ever for pop music.
Im a child of the 80's....and this is my all time favorite song, ever. so haunting to me. Thx for the deep cut, and i enjoyed seeing you enjoy it. ;) worth a subscribe
Anni-Frid also did guest vocals on Adam Ant's song "Strip". Which just brings me to say you need to check out Adam Ant! He was the "Prince Charming" of the early 80s
One of my favorite songs from those days and I had no idea it was Frida from Abba. Wow, what a cool thing to learn today!
Phil is unmistakable..and vocal lend also
It's Frida singing with Genesis. That sound is so familiar. Phil Collins producing, no surprise. Great song, Queen singer. Iconic ❤
Frida👸🏻👸🏻👸🏻👸🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹
I always thought she had the stronger powerful voice in ABBA
I can’t believe I never realized this song was by was Anni-Frid from ABBA! 🙈
I absolutely love the vibe of this song!
Don’t forget to check out some of Agnetha’s solo music as well! In fact she just came out with her first new single in ten years! Her duet with Gary Barlow is amazing. ❤
Check out her classic album "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" produced by Mike Chapman (of Blondie, Nick Gilder and Sweet fame), it's in a different vein from Frida's "Something's Going On" but just as good.
Now I am also reading comments left by other listeners and the one who commented that the drummer on this single was Phil Collins!! WOW AGAIN!! I grew up in Iowa and I am an African American male who was in Iowa while my mother obtained her MASTER'S DEGREE IN SPEECH PATHOLOGY, and I was the only African American kid in my class from 1st to 3rd grade and I was there when MTV MUSIC TELEVISION WAS INTRODUCED!! So there were no African American radio stations or any type of music being played by an with African American feel to it except for Michael Jackson and the "THRILLER," album as well as Prince, "1999," album...so I thought my 52 year old ass knew everything about everything behind the scenes, but you guys and your subscribers just hipped me 2 something I never knew all of these years...."THANK YOU ALL!!!"
Wow.. As many times as I listened to this back in the day, I never had a clue she was from ABBA. You are never too old to learn something new.
That lower-register guitar and the power percussion blend so perfectly with her higher vocals.
One of my favorite MTV videos. Frida was my favorite ABBA member.
Frida's first solo album was produced by Phil Collins (yes, him) who also played drums in 1982... Abba had just released their last album 'The Visitors' in 1981 and the group was slowly fading from view - their last single was released in 1983... Abba's insiders recalled that their records were not selling as much by 1982 and the guys (Benny and Bjorn) had both remarried and moved on... So, the incentive to keep Abba going just dissipated gradually... Agnetha and Frida began work on solo records, and they were growing less involved w/ their ex-husbands in the studio. Ultimately, Abba was over by '83... Bjorn and Benny stayed friends and worked behind the scenes together often on other musical projects.
Frida (Anni-Frid) had a career in Sweden before she met Benny and joined Abba... Once Abba was seen as a "70's pop relic" in the 80's, Frida's solo career stalled after 2 albums and she practically gave up singing and retreated from the spotlight for decades.
Agnetha also attempted to move on as a solo artist... but after a mishap on tour, she gave up singing and withdrew to the countryside of Sweden, where she stayed out of the limelight for decades as well.
Years later, Benny and Bjorn revealed that communication w/ their ex-wives was non-existent for years, but by the 90's, they had started to correspond casually and the guys respected the privacy of their former spouses and remained supportive over years. Only recently did Abba finally decide to record a farewell album 'Voyage'... as a 'farewell' to their fans for decades of support.
Nice summary. I just feel like adding that Frida released a third solo album after ABBA, Dupa Andetag, which is entirely in Swedish and my favorite of the solo albums. She has a duet with Maria Frederiksson (of Roxette) that is great. But every time I listen to it I am reminded that something extra special happens when she sings with Agnetha.
I also love the song "To Turn The Stone" from Frida's solo album.
This is peak 80s greatness right there. There will never be another decade like it again.
I've LOVED this song since it came out. So 80's 🙌
You must know ABBA was a supergroup! Every band member had great musical careers years before ABBA was formed.
I have learned a few things today. I was familiar with this song but I didn't know the singer was from ABBA. I know them as a group not as individuals because I am not super fan. Then I see the comments here about Phil Collins involvement with the song which I can hear now pointed out. I just always liked the song. It's great to learn new things 🤗
To be 100% accurate, Frida already had a carrier as a solo artist before Abba
Ahh, this reminds me of the early days of MTV. I've always loved Frida's voice. It has a mechanical quality to it that's almost unreal for a human voice. BTW, Phil Collins was the drummer for this song.
Freakin LOVE this Banger! Frida with a Rockin Edge! We just need an alternate video of her Rocking with band behind her!
Love me some Frida. Good reaction.
A while back on another ABBA review by them I mentioned that they should do this song and also that there's a youtube video of Frida and Phil in the studio during a break in the recording of this song with a very special guest visiting...a Beatle!
This came out in 1982 during the early days of MTV and they played the heck out of it. I was in high school then and really loved it.
I’ve been wanting you guys to do this for female Friday forever! So glad you got around to it. So glad it was a Friday.
I know right? Me too! 😁
Phil Collins produced Frida's solo album at the height of ABBA's turmoil in 1982.... 👍🫶
Frida's son was playing In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins, which she hadn't heard before and decided that was the sound she wanted and you can hear on this sing the similarities with the other. No wonder as Collins produced her album and played drums with this very recognisable style.
It was her daughter, not the son.
This song was HUGE when it came out in September 1982. It was played often on rock radio stations, and it was a shock when people found out that this was Frida from Abba because it was such a heavy sound. You knew immediately that it was Phil Collins on drums, the style was unmistakable.
You can listen to the full “Something’s Going On” album on TH-cam. Frida also put out another great album in 1984 called “Shine” and you can listen to that album on TH-cam as well.
This is from Frida's first English-language solo album "Something's Going On" (1982), recorded during a very difficult time in her life. She had just recently divorced from Benny, who had fallen in love with another woman. After this she felt the need to branch out on her own musically as well. She also changed her hairstyle and appearance. 1982 was the year when the four ABBA members started to drift apart and ventured out on their own solo projects. At the time Frida was inspired by the sound of Pat Benatar and she loved Phil Collins' album "Face Value" who was also willing to produce her album.
"I Know There's Something Going On" turned out to be a worldwide hit and the album did very well too. Frida released only one more album in English, "Shine" (1984) but when that was far less successful than its predecessor she abandoned her international solo career. In 1996 she returned with one more solo album, the excellent "Djupa Andetag" which she recorded in Swedish and thus was only aimed at the Scandinavian market.
One of my favorite songs when it came out!
I love you Frida! "If It Wasn't For The Nights" - ABBA
The still you did at 04:23 is beautiful.. Love Frida!
I love Frida!😊
ABBA split up, then the girls both went solo. Agnetha had a duet with Peter Cetera in 1988. She also has a beautiful Song "If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind". And just so you know, Agnetha released a new song yesterday: "Where Do We Go From Here".
Well, to be technical, they didn't break up, they went on to work on other projects and just didn't get around to coming together to record something...until recently. 🙂
WoW, her new song sounds awesome! Her voice sounds like she's still in her twenties.
Not sure how I missed Agnethas solo with Peter Cetera
The girls had solo careers before, during and after ABBA. ABBA were still an active group when this was released. The same with their albums during the 70s.
I prefer her duet with Gary Barlow and the live performance she did in london with him given her known anxiety to stage singing now
One of my favorite songs from the early 80's
I love this song. In my top 100
Amber, tell Jay that the reason Anni Frid went solo is because Abba broke up in 1982. That was the year of their last performance and were considered done after that!. So, Frida went solo the next year in 1983 and released "I Know There's Something Going On". Abba didn't reunite until 2016.
2021 is the year abba reunited for voyage
this had a resurgence in 1984, blew up all over the radio, and the soul / rhythm and blues stations as well. 👍💅
I remember buying this album and loving it! Thanks so much for the great memory!
This song rocks. Blasting the stereo, cruising the strip and rocking out to Phil Collins drums. Great song
She went new wave 80's trying for something a lil different...and it worked...it was a huge hit for her in the early 80's
Frida is a great singer. She has done opera as well.
You know Benny got another girl pregnant and divorced Frida. ABBA was still releasing and promoting together when this was out. In interviews and TV performances It's pretty clear none are very happy. Frida cut her hair and cut a completely different sounding album. If you want to hear something from her after calming down "Frida (ABBA) - Sista Valsen Med Dig (1996)" ---> th-cam.com/video/olHZgJtvIIw/w-d-xo.html It is in Swedish but I doubt ABBA fans will mind. It's a very nice and very sweet breakup song. If you want just translate or get it off internet first.
OMG I am so happy you decided to react to Frida!!! She has a fantastic solo career to pick from!
Great review! This song was a great hit!
-#cheers-- !-
I recently rediscovered this song and ended up buying the CD. It's excellent!
I'd never thought this was a good song to play at the club I'm aint to think about it, i'd like a d***It's not a good club song c***I used to get this stuff going on. And you know, it looks like you could say madness coming all over
Yeah, I don't guess it gives me a stiffy. I don't this song don't give me no steffy! I did something wrong and I don't even know where i'm like, baby you don't even give me a turn stuff in the door yet
Frida was solo before ABBA and then, after ABBA broke up when everybody divorced each other, Frida went solo again and made this song. This is the only song that I know from her from this era. And not to mention, Phil Collins on the drums is amazing and the bass playing is just as good as it was with ABBA.
Written by Russ Ballard of Argent.
He wrote "Since You've Been Gone" a hit for Head East and Rainbow., also "New York Groove" for Kiss's Ace Frehley!!
He had a minor solo career, with his "On The Rebound" reaching #70 on the US charts.
And "Voices" was a hit for him as well.
Big hit on MTV and radio.
Video shot in my home town of London.
I LOVED this song so much back in the day. In retrospect, it was very much of it's time, but I also found it really fresh and cool. Those big 80's beats were the BEST!
Frida Sings Superbly And On The Abba Hit Fernando Especially Great !!
Jay and Amber, I thank you for playing this tune by Frida. Love the song. Not only did Phil Collins provide the stellar drum beats, but he also produced the record. You should also check out "Easy Lover" by Phillip Bailey (you'll know his voice from Earth, Wind & Fire); this song is also produced by Phil Collins and features him on vocals.
As a teenager that was one of my favourite songs, and I had no idea that was Frida!!!
You’ve done so much ABBA I was wondering if you were even aware of Frida’s solo work. 😊
One of my all time faves!
I'm super happy to see you all react to this song!
