I knew this song before I found out that it was *the* Frida of ABBA who sings it. When I heard this was her song I was on cloud nine! I felt so proud for her. Even today this song is still the biggest international success by any of the ABBA members. But most importantly the song is still FANTASTIC.

Phil Collins wrote some stories in his own book:In a way,Frida was fragile, the divorce still echoes. Once finished the album, Stig Andersson invites everyone for a dinner at his home. When we arrive, he's completely drunk. We listenned to "Something's Going On" and, at the end, Stig asks:
      - Is this everything?
Frida cries and we want to spank him. I'm with my gang - all the Genesis' roadies are there, including the strong one Geoff Banks, who has the suggestive nickname "Bison". Everyone of us ended up in love with this simpathetic woman and want to protect her. But the coldest, more sober and less scandinavian minds are the majority, so we leave the place, although Stig's answer have ruined the whole night.

What’s cool about the video is that she is spying on her lover and his mistress and by the end, she is being spied on by them. They all know ‘something’s going on’. Frida is my favourite from the group. I love her warm rich sound and her feisty personality. In her two English solo albums, she went for a harder, rock sound on many of the lead tracks. One stand out ballad she did was ‘To Turn the Stone’ which may have one of the worst videos ever but the song is gorgeous. Check it out

@@resireg Frida did a couple of live performances of this song while on the promotion trail, notably on the 'Champs Elysee' show in October 1982. She did also sing 'Come To Me' live a couple of years later while promoting 'Shine'. I do think both she and Agnetha were a little let down by Polar, by leaving them to do it all alone. Many of their TV performances would have looked so much better with a band with them, even if the backing track was played. This song at least had a cool video, which got heavy airplay on the fledgling MTV, helping it to be a hit.

@@resireg No. Frida was asked about possibly doing a tour in 1982 but she really needed to have a couple of albums worth of good songs to justify it. In any case, both were a little drained by the ABBA years. Although being solo meant they had to handle the workload alone, it did also allow them to make their own decisions and clearly they didn't want to put themselves under such scrutiny anymore. Grace Slick once said 'All Rock and Rollers over the age of 50 look stupid and should retire'. I guess that age is even younger for Pop stars. Agnetha and Frida both, more or less, 'retired' from the business still in their 30's.

    • @resireg

@@chelseacharger I understand that. But now all we have are their lip synching performances on TV, like "The Heat is on" by Agnetha or "There is something going on" by Frida. I understand that women have even more pressure to look sexually attractive to be popular, that is why Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, even Madonna are now redundant, while guys like Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan still fill up arenas because people go there not to listen to their music, but to see them.

Stig and Phil Collins had previous dealings as Genesis had recorded their 'Duke' album at Polar Studios. They didn't get on at all and in his autobiography 'Not Dead Yet' Collins, while praising Frida, absolutely tore into Stig calling him 'an arsehole' after his (albeit drunken) reaction to the 'SGO' album. I think Stig was worried about the possible break-up of ABBA and how these solo albums might hasten that. It seems like he was insistent on having fellow Polar artist, Tomas Ledin penned songs on both this album as well as Agnetha's 'Wrap Your Arms Around Me', released the following year. He even tried to get a Benny and Bjorn song onto 'SGO', something I don't think either Phil or Frida wanted.

I think you make a valid point about the video being primarily concerned with the lyrics, at maybe a sacrifice of the overall "feel" of the song. In the early 80s there were a lot of music video directors who were trying to get a storyline feel, or to reinforce the lyrical themes of the song, for a more "short film" style. What I've always loved about this video are the interiors, especially of Frida's "bedroom." I read somewhere that the production designer was so intent on getting a specific look that he went to Germany to get tabletop accessories that hadn't been released in the UK yet (Frida had just moved to London at this point.) If you are interested in what Agnetha was doing during this period, she was completing her first post-ABBA solo album, Wrap Your Arms Around Me, with Mike Chapman at the helm (Blondie's Heart of Glass.) Her promo videos from that album were absolute trash, but certain TV performances are worth viewing as a time capsule. th-cam.com/video/VB1oDZOmuB4/w-d-xo.html

I am surprised too, their solo albums were if not ABBA good, but still good, it's just that they were released at unsuitable time for such a style.

This is an edited version of the full song on the album, the guitar solo on the full version is so hot, the song on a whole sounds better and plays out more naturally.

hey Dereck you need to check out Frida's 1975 covers album. "Fernando" is way better that than the ABBA cover (yes, cover) version. And David Lynch totally missed out when not including "som en sparv" on the Twin Peaks soundtrack. It's either that, or they totally ripped it off with "nightinggale". And then there's the dramatic beauty of "ett liv i solen". Did I mention that it is also the very best album cover of OF ALL TIME? Check it out. So sexually suggestive while being very artistic and deeper than the first glance might suggest.

She definitely should continue her solo career all acros the 80's and 90's. At least all of ABBA members came back tohether in 2021. Did you hear their new songs?

Frida's voice made ABBA an amazing group. When I watch ABBA's videos, I also always listen to how Frida made the blending so fantastic. Her solo is great, too.

Frida embarked on a solo career in 1982 on the backdrop of The Visitors album.
Phil Collins produced the album cause Frida liked his Face Value album & she wanted a Pat Benatar soft rock direction.
Despite not making UK top ten, this track was very received, a lot of radio play throughout 1982/83 and Frida phrased for quite a good solo effort.
But it was back to the studio again post this track to continue recording with ABBA two more singles, The Day Before You Came & Under Attack were post I Know Theres Something Going On.

I was 14 when this song came out & loved it-I wish Frida had had more success here solo, she had the potential for it. This video is how I learned which singer was which on my ABBA Gold album-I'd never seen any live performances, interviews or anything. I never heard any of Agnetha's solo songs. I still can't tell the guys apart unless they're paired up with their respective partners in a video like Knowing Me, Knowing You. #lol

I love this song of Frida’s. I have always wondered if this song was inspired from the divorce of Benny Andersson? I have the cassette of this album. Tells you how old I am. Agnetha and Frida are the voices of ABBA. Nothing can compare to the two of their voices together. Phil Collins produced this album and you can hear him on the drums. Earth, Wind and Fire are on brass.

if you're familiar with Miami Vice, it has the same sounding vibe as music from that show. Agnetha's solo album did marginally better and has catchier hits that reflect her ABBA background but also hark back to her solo days prior to ABBA. Frida's stength would have been a jazzy bluesy number that make her a known name before ABBA came along.

Do yourself a favour and don't pay attention to the old fanboys in the comments who are suggesting deep cuts and lesser good songs for nostalgic reasons. As far as Agnetha, the songs you wanna listen to are:

    Dance Your Pain Away
    When You Really Loved Someone
