- The most popular type of anime out there is Shonen, specifically Battle Shounen, and everyone just assumes that that's all there is. They complain about anime characters being in middle school or high school and yet for some reason continue to only watch shows like Tokyo Revengers, Demon Slayer, Naruto, Chainsaw Man, My Hero Academia, blah blah blah. So tbh everyone should just not watch Shonen anime. Just stop. If you're gonna complain, just stop.

Fist of the Northstar and toriko are good examples of shonen with adult characters, it's not as rare as some people think ngl

There's a noticeable phenomena where the people who most loudly criticize anime as a medium have only ever watched shonen. So their only frame if reference is children's entertainment instead of something more "mature" like they want.

I get that people don't like branching out much for one reason or another but if they do it can really be a rewarding experience. It's what kept me watching anime when certain aspects of popular battle shonen just didn't cut it for me. It might mean you'll end up finding series that no one's talked about in years or ever. Maybe you might find something that resonates with you that most people don't understand. Or maybe you're cool with just sticking to the surface since you enjoy that the most. Just do you and remember: shonen is a demographic, anime/manga are mediums, and none of them are genres.
I love space westerns, and I didn't realize how much of that existed in anime until I got into it.

Good video. It ties into something me and a good friend of mine discussed a while back of people not being willing to get uncomfortable with searching for new media. People will complain about how something is not “the same” anymore and how they don’t enjoy it now, yet never look beyond the surface for something else. A lot of people have a hard time admitting when something isn’t for them anymore, and you know what? That’s ok if that’s the case, we all grow and change over time, and so does our enjoyment/taste in media, and sometimes we have to get uncomfortable trying new things and we may not enjoy some of them, but that’s part of it, finding out what we like and don’t like. In the end, you will ultimately benefit because you went on uncharted waters, and will probably find something truly resonates with you. You wouldn’t write off every steakhouse in existence because one had poor quality steaks. Almost nothing is truly a monolith, there’s something for everyone out there, you just have to look sometimes.

Ya know, this reminds me of when I Hate Everything 8 years ago made a two part video complaining about anime and it was LITERALLY the exact same talking points, it was dumb then and it's only gotten dumber over time. I respectfully disagree. Just because something isn't made with your demographic in mind, doesn't mean it won't appeal to you. I'm not 8-12 or a boy but I liked Star Wars. People said it was for kids. And even though there are a billion soap operas, I'm an adult and I don't like them. I think the issue is that mainstream anime seems to hit similar beats and it makes you feel like you're watching the same thing. IHE and others like myself prefer more nuanced stories. Not kid in high school has powers and gets girls. I mean, that's a huge chunk of assembly-line anime just in that category alone. There are great anime out there for adults but you have to go out of your way to find it.

Shonen is for the the teenage Demographic, specifically young teenage boys. It's fine not to like it, personally I also hate the fact that the characters in Tokyo Revengers look like grown ahh adults and they are suppose to be "High School" teenagers. But I understand that this is shonen, a genre specifically made to appeal to teenagers, so the characters are gonna be teenagers. But my enjoyment of the anime/manga isn't based off the genre or age of the characters, it's how the story is told that makes me connect and enjoy it. I love Berserk not because Guts is a badass who kills demons with his big sword, but because he turns into a protector and learns to open up to people again. I love One Piece because it's a goofy pirate manga about a main character who turns into a looney tunes character during the samurai arc that has a talking dragon as the main villain.
and if you noticed, I didn't mention age once. Stories are made for us to connect and enjoy, not to yell at the screen because the characters aren't the same age we are, and if it's something that bothers you, just read Seinen manga.

One of the recent shonen anime I am watching is Black Clover... Guess what! they are all 15, 16 to 19 who work under 23 years old man... U know how I resolve this for myself? In my headcanon, the squad members are all 20-25 years old and the captain is 38/40... BOOM! The issue's solved... Well, there's another and better effective way! Don't give a F about their age... like U said a lot is going on in these anime that are more important than their age!

I just purchased the DVDs of A Certain Scientific Railgun and Clannad, looking forward to rewatching those incredible series.
Both are absolutely amazing series and their later seasons only get better
the point MoistCritikal brought up wasn't that he doesn't like kids in anime, it was that he didn't like how the characters would be in middle school yet they are doing grown up shit like having sex, being in gangs, etc.
I think your forgetting the fact that Tokyo Revengers Characters are literally riding motorcycles and beating eachother up and committing literal crimes, which is definitely not child-like. also a scene where a girl whose probably their age is HALF NAKED.

Reminds me of a large subset of the gaming community too on the same vein, where they complain about the state of the medium, even though they mostly play either shooters, sports games, or the single genre they're copiously biased towards, either that or they merely consume the same few franchises that have been effectively burning them out.
On a small sidenote, if someone complains about slice of life anime just being only about highschool girls, I gear them towards something like Clannad (alongside many other shows made by Kyoto Animation) as well as something like Mushishi (I haven't seen it personally, but it seems like a good pitch)
What piss me off the most is that one group of people that seem to only know and watch battle shonen anime like its THE ONLY THING THAT EXIST!They go around saying thing like "ONE PIECE IS THE BEST MANGA EVER MADE!" but they also NEVER fucking venture out of battle shonen.

I personally watched shojo anime like the wallflower and clannad, so I never really got attached to anime like Naruto, DBZ and one piece, and it's still that way up to now, I watch anime like Gabdrop, konosuba, MDUD and plastic memories, I despise shounen anime with a passion, the cringe cast, the overflowing amount of filler, and the... **Shudders** community... I hate it when weebs are portrayed by the shounen half of the community, it's embarrassing, and is one of the main reasons why weebs are seen as "cringe acoustics".

The issue with many shonen is that they start when you are young and they end when you are grown up.
If they all were, say, 5 years of serialization you would be right, and if someone starts to read them in their 20s you are absolutely right.
But they are not always like that, Naruto and Bleach were 15 years long serialization, One Piece right now is 25 years long serialization.
People can't just drop something that they are watching from their childhood like that, they clearly want to see the ending, but they also start to see that these operas are flawed for their age.

I think it's just really hard to admit that you've grown up and your tastes have changed for a lot of people. Like, I'll always like Naruto because I grew up with it and I have nostalgia for it, but I doubt I'll ever get into another shonen battle series again. Just like how I loved Rugrats as a kid but haven't cared about anything Nickelodeon has put out in the past 10 years. That doesn't mean new shonen anime/ manga is bad, it just means it's not for me anymore. And that's fine because there are kids out there growing up with this stuff and they should have their own versions of Naruto and Rugrats made for them, not for me. And maybe I will like some of it, since adults can like stuff made for kids and vice versa, but honestly I'm more comfortable with adult orientee stuff, like Vinland Saga and Death Note now. (I was into Death Note as a kid, but I rewatched it this year as an adult in my late 20s and appreciated it so much more now.) Also, now that I'm older, manga is more appealing to me since you get to appreciate the individual artist's work that way, so maybe watching instead of reading is another mistake older anime fans are making.

Death Note is a shonen meant for teenagers like any other. It should've been a seinen but it wasn't and it was definitely written like a shonen. I love it though. Even AOT is a shonen lol.

Um, I was a kid in the 80's and tons of cartoons in my demographic had few or no kids in them, often not even humans, just saying. There didn't used to be a rule that kid shows had to feature kids in order to be relatable to them, at least not in the US.

True there’s only a few good shonen I could enjoy as an adult like HxH & AOT b/c they get edgy and dark enough to be more mature. Plus there are characters of all different types and ages. There should be a category for those types of Shonens with crossover appeal & that age well.

Anyways there are other more mature series that aren’t Shonen that feature MC’s in their late teens like Code Geass, Parasyte, Psycho Pass & NGE so the point still stands. It’s not hard to be able to relate to aspects of a character regardless if they’re 18 or 65.

In all fairness I think shonen is the most stupid and dumb genre for me. I didn't like it even as a kid. The MC is almost always a poor orphan but has that special something, something that allows him to power up at the exact dramatic moment under the tunes of cringe music. 1000 flashbacks because story was not established in order to give weight to the current scene you see... So you can feel the feels.
Tried Naruto - hated it, like really hated it

Tried Dragon Ball Z - found it hilarious but not in the fun way
I just think it's stupid when MC just needs to charge his batteries a notch to beat the boss man of the current arc before he continues with his other power up. Cue in some useless fillers and time sinks and you have a snoozefest.
Tried Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood - really liked it. I mean wow... A story about two brothers that paid a high price for their hubris all wrapped up in a wholesome adventure that didn't take 220 arcs, 500 episodes and 2000 flashbacks. Nicely packed and easy to get into. I mean arcanepunk is rare genre and any media that decides to try it is welcomed in my book.
So just because it's meant for kids, does not mean that every kid will like it. Like in my case.

@@bushamo by the time I was done with shonen I was already a fan of Gundam UC and discovered Berserk. Rest is history. IMHO Full Metal Alchemist is what shonen should strive to be, I would add One Piece too since they have really good ideas and some good life lessons. Especially in the case of Full Metal Alchemist.
Also idk why ppl find it so hard to relate to younger characters as if they weren’t teenagers themselves not too long ago. Sure it’s unbearable if the entire show is some juvenile highschool shit (rare exception: Prison School) but for example someone like Killua is still relatable as an adult even though he’s only 12-13 b/c of how deep his character is.
