I know this video is a bit longer but watch until the end, as it gets better and better! Also, looking forward to dealing with the rest of his objections on Part 3!
Not gonna send u an essay this time since I'm just repeating my point from your last video. But u cant bash Cosmic for believing in subjective morality when you yourself stress the context of the bible to justify it. If morality were objective the context wouldn't matter.
Bruh!!! I'm not even a theist and I think this series is frickin' DOPE! I enjoy cosmic skeptic's content but he dropped the ball on this one. Whether you accept the supernatural claims within it or not, Bible interpretation is not something you can do justice to by simply opening up the passage and reading it at face value. It takes work to get a good handle on the literary and historical context. Many of my non-believing peers just don't seem to do this.
The will of God should not take “work to get a good handle on”. Seems mediocre for the word of God. If these texts are to be taken as the wisdom of men, then any good ideas of the bible can be found elsewhere, so it doesn’t mean the good ideas are even best found in the bible. The word/will of God that can be easily misinterpreted, which makes it useless, and it’s actual interpretation subjective.
@@Necrophadez You wrote: "The will of God should not take 'work to get a good handle on'. Seems mediocre for the word of God." Note that the thrust of these videos seems to be arguing for/against a particular interpretation of various passages of the Bible - particularly regarding slavery. Perhaps you are right to express the expectation that a superior being communicate in an undeniably superior way - impossible to be misinterpreted, misunderstood, etc. But at that point you would be making a vastly different argument from those put forward in these videos. It seems you would be arguing for how a God ought to communicate in order for us to think it's a God _rather than_ arguing for whether or not we should take a specific set of passages to convey this/that teaching. Cosmic Skeptic seemed to be addressing _interpretation of passages_ rather than the plausibility of a divine being communicating in a way indistinguishable from human communication. Wouldn't you agree?
Yeah, I think you should look up Josh Bowen's 3 part response to this video. Josh actually speaks Hebrew and is a Ancient Near East scholar. He's an Agnostic, but his wife is a Christian so Josh is more balanced than Cosmic Skeptic. Lev. 25:44-46 is definitely describing owning foreign slaves as property. Notice how Whaddo You Meme conveniently forgot to discuss the part of vs 46 that talks about the fact you can inherit these foreign slaves to your children? If you translate property to labor in this case it doesn't make any sense at all.
It was so bad that it was great :) Also, don't know if it is just my computer but the video kept going out of focus a lot. Did you get some new software or hardware?
This is why I like to point out how verses were just added to the Bible to make it easier to navigate not; for Christians or Non-Christians to take the Bible out of context, or promote their own agendas etc. This is how so many false doctrines have been created by taking verses as their own nit bits of truth thus stripping the context away.
@@justchilling704 absolutely! To your point, that's why it is good to read a book of the Bible in its entirety, as that is how it was intended to be read.
@@justchilling704 I actually have an ESV Bible set that removes all chapters and verses and formats it like a book. Though most of the books have logical chapter divides (e.g. history (usually an event per chapter), psalms (one chapter = one psalms), prophecy (one chapter = one prophecy (not always but for the most part)), it is great to read the NT letters in it's fullness without seeing the chapter numbers :)
Having studied the Bible in its original languages for over 30-years, having been through all the graduate seminary classes on Scripture and interpretation, I can assure all that the Bible does not support slavery.
Bro, I haven't seen "scholars" defeat that like you did. Man keep up the AMAZING work, people are going to NEED it sooner than they think!! God is moving in a BIG way!!!
You havent seen it because he pull half this shit from his ass. There are reason he only showed 1/3 of the verse he mentioned. He is deceiving you. Otherwise. Why pick and choose
ReformedThe LOL Keep having an that argument bin your head, with your imaginary facts. He literally refutes everything and shows enough. You want him to quote the whole Bible?
Man this video is a powerhouse. Amazing work. The problem with Cosmic skeptic is that it appears that he has fallen in love with his own intellect. Just as the scriptures states "prophesing themselves to be wise they became fools." Romans 1:22
@@8thMusketeer And why is god's morality objective?"because he's god and has power over you". Seems to me,you christians would do anything god said is ok,even if you wouldn't agree with it. If god said you must kill to get to heaven, would you do it? Anyway this vid is sad, another black man defending slavery..shows you how strong the delusion is.
@@makavellithedon3977 no it is sad that skeptics say Bible support slavery. I don’t know they realize it but by saying the Bible support slavery, they are affirming the slave owners using the Bible to argue that slavery is permissible.
I watched his vids and I don't believe that they are sufficient to disprove god supports slavery. A lot of the verses he quoted about equality doesn't specifically apply to slaves. god was speaking about the 'foreigners' who were not (yet)s laves. Treat those people equally. But the ones that become slaves are treated differently, outlined later. The word 'foreigners" is used in all of those verses he quoted, but the rules and treatment that follow in the slave verses clearly apply to slaves. If you were to look at the big picture, his interpretation makes the scripture controversial given the other verses that support slavery. Now if you were to look at it from my perspective, where equality applies to foreigners who are not yet slaves, and then once you take them as slaves, the rules change, then there is no contradiction here. This fits perfectly, without the need for interpretation if you see which words god uses (israelites, foreigners, slaves) when he's outlining the specific rules and treatment.
@Blaster Master I grew up a christian too and I was a sunday school teacher. I understand precisely what he's doing. This is what the leaders did when I presented them with what I found, and I knew I had to renounce christianity. They refuse to acknowledge the things that go against what they believe and mold the narrative to fit.
@Blaster Master I feel the same way. For me though, it's clear that god has sanctioned slavery and the ill treatment of slaves that are not israelites. And as you know, further engages in racism, by making the distinction between local and foreign slaves, and then sexism, by making the distinction between the hebrew male and female slaves. The fact that you can beat a slave to the point that it takes just less than a couple of days to recover and it's okay is despicable. Then there is the genocide, the sex slavery, the infanticide, all atrocious. And the concept that we were all born in sin because of adam and eve is just as ridiculous. He put two innocent kids (who didn't know the difference between good and evil before eating from the tree) in a room with a shiny thing in the middle of the room an told them not to touch it. He then allowed the serpent/devil to tempt these kids, the same devil who was so crafty he convinced one third of gods angels to follow him. And then he puts a hedge around the other tree to keep them from eating and having eternal life, when he could have easily put the hedge around the first tree in the first place. Instead of giving them slap on the wrist, he sentenced them and all of mankind to death (mortality). Wipes out nation after nation until he finally sends his son/himself to die as a sacrifice to himself to make himself feel better for a mistake he clearly made in the garden of eden and his own incompetency as a father. The angels were right to leave him. So regardless of how historically accurate the bible is, its so crazy that people accept it on faith when logically it's bullshit.
@Blaster Master 1/3 of the angels were probably thinking god is a tyrant. And you're absolutely right, if he had more time he would have been able to free the rest of them because they would all have come to their senses. they think baby killing is wrong. If you think baby killing is justified then more power to ya but I'm with the reasonable many. note the use of the word reasonable.
I pray for CosmicSkeptic. I would be embarrassed if I were him and saw this video after he smugly spoke of "taking things out of context." In reality, the Holy Bible would have PREVENTED the tragedy of American slavery!
This is so great, a few months back I saw Cosmic Skeptic's video about slavery and I was puzzling over it for a good few weeks, very glad to have found this video! Thank you :D
slave = employee master = employer property = asset, or human resource buy slaves = hire employees (as through a recruiting agency) foreign slaves can be for life = H1B visas can be permanent
This is POWERFUL!!! This video really needs to be sent all over! It really helps to clear up a lot of confusion and misunderstanding that people have on this topic. SOLID!!
"In what world should we consider this acceptable moral guidance?" In yours, Mr. Cosmic Skeptic; in yours! In your non-cognitivist world, any moral guidance is as valid as any other.
Your statement is false. Cosmic Skeptic does not believe that "any moral guidance is as valid as any other." Nor do I. Nor do you, though it puts you at odds with your Bible and your god.
This is a classical "I'm an atheist, god doesn't exist and I dont like how he behaves." "Objective morals dont exist, what happens in the bible is objectively wrong." "The stories and accounts in the bible are all fantastic and made up, apart from the ones I want to be critical of, that stuff actually happend." "I'm an atheist, instead of spending my time arguing god doesn't exist, I'm going to argue he has character flaws."
""Objective morals dont exist, what happens in the bible is objectively wrong."" The point is not that slavery is objectively wrong (and I don't recall Cosmic Skeptic saying that it was). The point is that YOU would consider it wrong, in any other circumstance. ""I'm an atheist, instead of spending my time arguing god doesn't exist, I'm going to argue he has character flaws."" Again, Cosmic Skeptic is arguing against the Bible, not its god. Whether or not Yahweh exists, Christians trying to justify the Bible's condoning of slavery is a problem.
@@JMUDoc “Christians trying to justify the Bible’s condoning of slavery is a problem” The entire video explained why it doesn’t. Stop arguing from incredulity
The problem with evil is the biggest challenge for Christians. I think clay Jones does a nice job tackling it from a Christian perspective but that is the most effective argument against Christianity. The "who created God?" Or the euthyphro dilemma isn't gonna worth trying because those are easily answered by Christian philosophy.
As an atheists I as well find the argument of slavery weak. But there is an inconsistency I find with the leviticus 44-46 verses. So, given that the bible has given foreigners rights and ordered people to treat them well in other passages, why does it say that you can get slaves or servants from other nations (44) and later on saying that you must not rule over your fellow israelites ruthlessly (46). Simply here it is making a distinction between israelite and non israelite servants, that the latter can be treated ruthlessly. I find these very contradicting and confusing.
@@JP-rf8rr Not really, I've seen the premise of the argument for the problem of evil and it tends to fall flat on its face. One of the premises tends to be that God is all-loving; which He is not; and then goes on to say that an all-loving god wouldn't allow evil to exist. The blatant problem with that is that an all-loving god would in fact love evil as well. If you change the premise to be that God is all good/benevolent then say that an all good god wouldn't allow evil to exist, then the issue becomes free will. For the most part even atheists agree that free will is a good thing, therefore they have to accept that people can use their free will to do evil. In order for their god to get rid of evil he would have to get rid of free will, or immediately kill/destroy anyone who commits evil acts. Lying is an evil act, everyone lies at some point (most before they are even old enough to have children), therefore their god would destroy everyone at some point, atheists are already calling God evil for allowing evil people to exist for a time(giving them a chance to repent), and then killing/destroying them at the time He chooses, how much more will they call their god evil when he kills/destroys anyone who commits evil for the very first time.
@@chrislrob The verse is self explanatory. Basically what happened during the slave trade, stealing people from their land and making them submit to race-based forced servitude is condemned in the Bible, both in the old and new testaments.
Exodus 21:1-36 (KJV) Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them. If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever. And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her. And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish. And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money. He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee. But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die. And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death. And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death. And if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed: If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed. And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money. If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake. If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit. But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death. If there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him. Whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him. If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned. And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein; The owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his. And if one man's ox hurt another's, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it; and the dead ox also they shall divide. Or if it be known that the ox hath used to push in time past, and his owner hath not kept him in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own.
This understanding of Biblical slavery also helps me understand exactly how the Bible frames 'slavery to sin' and how Jesus could repay that. Thank you. 💙
If atheist don't believe in the Most High and the scriptures, why are they so concerned whether the bible condones slavery? They make these videos to try to convince themselves and others the unnatural.
@@juance2262 Yup exactly. They say "God is this, God is that. God does this and says this and that isn't right." But then they say that God doesn't exist. Which of course really doesn't make sense. Thanks man. Before this I watched CosmocmicSkeptic's video. I started to panic a little to be honest. And then, after seeing some not so positive comments about God, I saw that a christian (propably) shared your video. Good job buddy. Remember, Hebrew is not a dead language. It's funny how the Atheist show bias distinctions while trying to speak about Scripture. To Cosmic Skeptic, at the time of the Transatlantic slave trade, did the slavers use any proper form of critical thinking concerning the Exegetical interpretation of Genesis 9:25 and Leviticus 25:42-46?
Why is Cosmic Skeptic 'Outraged' and think slavery is wrong when he is a moral relativist and morality is only down to one's opinion? When he claims he is 'outraged', he is obviously making a moral judgement.
This is interesting. How do you define sanity? And what's common? It was sane and common during the Third Reich to hate Jews. It was sane and normal for men to treat women as property for most of human history. The world we enjoy today was built on the back of thousands of years of slave labor. Without a moral absolute (something that is posited by your statement by arguing for "sane people") where does one get a definition for "sanity" And even today, the widespread belief that slavery is wrong is largely due to the emergence of Christianity in culture. It was Christians of different beliefs who championed the end of slavery over the years of human history. It wasn't moral relativists
@@ThePurpleGoose023 Slavery is good because it helps me get more labor for my work, it's free, and I get to do whatever I want with the slave, how is that not a good thing for me? People thinking that slaves are bad are the slaved, but for me it's great!
@@ThePurpleGoose023 But what if you couldn't change him? Would you kill him for the greater good? One person can say it would be wrong to kill Hitler as a baby, one would say it's for the greater good. In the end, It's just an opinion. Why is slavery wrong? Sure it's bad for the slave, but the master gets free labor, someone that tends their field and house, and it's for free. It's just an opinion that owning slaves is morally wrong. Why is it wrong to rape another women? If the while point of Darwinism and evolution is survival of the fittest, then raping is just procreation and guaranteeing my seed survives. Again, one can yes and the other no, but why is it wrong? Is it morally wrong to steal your neighbors food to feed your own starving family? One can say yes, the other would say no. Atheists can't have a moral objective because there's no standard of morality. CosmicSkeptic said he believes in moral subjectiveness, but believes owning slaves is wrong, why? His own opinion?

Jesus was against religion. Religion is about laws and rules etc. Jesus is about a personal relationship with him. Just wanted to point the difference out to you. I’m glad you’re learning more about Christianity.
Great video! Maybe the third part will cover this, but I'm a bit surprised you didn't include Deut 15: 13f for context of what letting a slave go actually involves: "And when you let him go free from you, *you shall not let him go empty-handed.* You shall *furnish him liberally* out of your flock, out of your threshing floor, and out of your winepress. As the LORD your God has blessed you, you shall give to him."
It's a debate technique to appear superior, "your so insignificant I cant even remember your name". Unfortunately in this instance our main man on the channel here played it 5 or 6 times to use his own words to own him.
Well, that sounds like something only an opportunists would say. People don't have to sell themselves to slavery because we have a system call welfare. We also have a shelter system. Both are to help those who have fallen on hard times. And for those in debt that cannot be overcome there are anti-harassment laws and Chapter 11 and 13 bankruptcy. So as a response to your statement...I would hope that no one would ever need these but it offers relief instead of labor and then they can seek a job. Modern culture has jobs that didn't even exist back then and now you can simply become a part of the "working class". Hopefully...you don't get mistreated as an employee either. But there are laws to protect you there too. By the way, I had a friend who, as a child, was sent to live and serve in someone else's home so that her family could make ends meet. I used to have a hard time understanding that since that is not common here in the U.S. I was offended for her...but she had a different perspective of what her family had done.

Cosmic Skeptic throughout the video sounded Arrogant, as though he was high above us looking down, meanwhile, WYM was very calm, broke down things to make them more understandable, and yet, he never, at any point, came off sounding arrogant or stuck up.
Wow! That was a top notch video. All another level. People who don't know the subject well, don't realize how much study and work goes into such a brilliant exposition of this matter. Thank you brother.
Basically this part of the Bible beginning in Leviticus 25:44 and ending in 55 talks about working contracts, if you're a Israelite than you shouldn't contract another Israelite, but you should contract foreigners, and you could contract them for life, for you and your sons to enjoy the fruits if their labor if so he wanted and if a rich foreigner contracts because you're poor and can't have your own land to work than your family should help you ending the contract by helping you pay the work hours you sold in the contract or you should pay yourself and be free of that contract, last case scenario work until the accorded time has finished and don't work for someone again, because you are a servant of God and no-one else. That is what I understand about that part of the chapter. PS: If anything i think it sounds like a teaching to the Israelites to work for themselves and not depend on working for anothers, kind entrepreneurial and self-reliant if you stop to think, but I think it's a stretch, maybe I am reading to much in to it.
BRILLIANT #2 Can’t wait for part 3. It would be nice to see this as a stand alone study without having to listen to the skeptic, however, an understanding of the misrepresentation is very useful. Nicely Done!
If you didn't have the skeptic, then someone would be making a video trying to counter it without looking at the arguments raised. This is a bit more preemptive.
Jay Ferguson kinda what I meant in my disclaimer. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. But I was referring to a study model not a video. I agree with you in that aspect.
I think I’ve heard the objection about beating slaves almost to death so often that I had to watch a few times before it clicked - and your right. What I wasn’t getting at first was its not that the owner was off the hook for beating him - he is off the hook for death penality.

Just because most countries have militaries, doesn’t mean they’re all like ISIS and North Korea. Just because the Bible includes rich Hebrews who have Bondservants and Maidservants, doesn’t mean they were captured, oppressed, and forced into slavery like what Egypt did to the Hebrews in Exodus. It’s illegal to do that kind of slavery, even according to the Bible.
The Bible says "do not treat foreigners badly" but also says "you can beat foreign slaves do any degree as long a they recover after a day or two, and you don't disable or disfigure them permanently." So, at _best,_ the Bible is inconsistent.
It's really just two different situations. Certain foreigners like resident aliens were considered free men and were not to be bought as slaves, while slaves from surrounding nations could be bought and treated as chattel. Christian apologists like to dress up the former as the latter in order to pretend the Bible says something it doesn't.
@@JMUDoc Yep - or, to be more precise, don't be harsh to resident aliens who have sold themselves into _debt_ slavery. _Chattel_ slaves, on the other hand, you could do whatever you pleased with.
@Jesus is with me "it doesn’t say you can beat a slave at all" Exodus 21:20-21 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property. Beat a slave, and you will not be punished if they recover after a day or two. No context can make that say anything other than what it says.
@Jesus is with me Yes, or no, does Exodus 21:21-20 say that a master will not be punished for beating their slave as long as the slave does not die? Yes, or no?
7:20 Erm, the "ger toshav" which is what I assume this man is referring to are _not_ mentioned in verses 44-46 at all. The terms in the text, when translated, are very clearly about servants/slaves ("obed") and how they can be kept as possessions ("lachze"). And this part in the video comes after he cherry-picks to make slavery seem volitional, ignoring the total lack of any provision for that in 44-46 as well as casting Exodus 21:5 as if it refers to slaves in general and not specifically (and only) _Hebrew_ slaves. Edit: Correction on my part - "ger toshav" are in fact mentioned in verse 45 as a group whom you may buy slaves from, however there is still no reason to think this refers to buying the "ger toshav" themselves and treat them as a debt slave, when verse 46 clearly states you may keep the slaves "l'olm" (forever).

Theologians: You do realize we've written countless commentaries on those passages to reflect the varying meaning? Atheists: But muh opinion.
Academics: the Bible is man-made, scientifically-wrong, historically-wrong, contradictory, and is not a "book", so much as a compilation of a bunch of stories written over the centuries by multiple authors, many of whom wrote with political agendas, combined into a single document by a group of men that definitely had an agenda and that which some Christians--ignorant of even their most sacred works origins--like to pretend fell from the sky. If slaves are treated so nicely, why do there need to be separate laws for them? How do you reconcile verses 23-25 "23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise." with verses 26-27 "26 An owner who hits a male or female slave in the eye and destroys it must let the slave go free to compensate for the eye. 27 And an owner who knocks out the tooth of a male or female slave must let the slave go free to compensate for the tooth." And verses 20-21 "20 Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property." So if they die after three or four days, no punishment! And let's not forget verse 17 as a great example of Biblical fairness: "17 Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death."

The comparison of biblical slavery to a modern day working force is very good point. Also I always remember of how the jubilee is a thing in the bible, where slave freed, debts eradicated and lands return to their respective owner. There’s many places in history as well where children and wives are referred to as the property of the husband, workers in many places are referred to as properly as well.
I’ll also add that the verse about beating slaves also comes after the description of what happens if two free people get into a fight. The person who beats up the other pays for their lost work, but they don’t go to jail or face other punishment. They just didn’t think a beating was as big of a deal for anyone as we do today. And if a person works for you, it’s assumed you’re already paying them, so having no additional penalty or punishment makes sense in that way.
Keep up the good fight bro. I get tired of people complaining about the same thing even after it has been explained. They act as they have never heard/read a well thought out response from Christians. The more I listen to half-baked sceptic responses the more I believe its an issue of the heart and not of the mind. The bible lays it square when it connects humility, wisdom and being close with God.
Well put together video over all. Color me impressed. You're the first Christian youtuber I've seen who actually seems to put any thought into his points. If you make more videos debunking cosmic or other TH-cam Atheists I'll continue watching. I have just 2 problems with your arguments. Exodus 21:21 Is still setting in place a law in which so long as he doesn't cause permanent physical damage a slave owner can beat the slave. This is still morally reprehensible. Deuteronomy 23:15 is not referencing a typical, slave/owner situation but a situation in which a slave is fleeing a neighboring land. I also have a question. If a male slave has a wife and child while he was working for his master how long till the wife and child goes free? Do they get to go free? The intent of this law seems to be to breed slaves that can legally be had for life. I don't want to assume though. Perhaps there are some verses that clear this up?

Great videos, and I'm not sure you're going to see this comment, but they would be a lot better if you threw up relevant Bible verses on the screen when you make your points. As it is, the viewer just has to take your word for it when you say "this is true" to the statement that Biblical slavery was intended to help the poor. I, myself, am aware of that, having read the books of the law, but before I did it personally, I didn't know who to trust. Actually seeing these points there in the Bible took a huge weight off my mind. You would be doing so many viewers a favor if you could do that in the future. There are also two verses late in Deuteronony (I forget the chapter, but in the 20s) that protect runaway slaves. That should help your argument immensely.
As an honest Christian, I'll admit that slavery is generally one of those practices which have been confirmed as a moral law in the New Covenant, so even though such practices as slave-trading or unfair treatment of the war-captives/criminals are immoral in Christianity, still the slave-labour as a method of compensation, and use of force against a slave are moral options, or in some cases even a necessity for a Christian.

Whether you accept the supernatural claims within it or not, Bible interpretation is not something you can do justice to by simply opening up the passage and reading it at face value. It takes work to get a good handle on the literary and historical context. Many of my non-believing peers just don't seem to do this.
Thanks for being willing to give it a fair shake - it's refreshing to see!
You are appreciated. It's good to see people that appreciate the value of words and what they mean in specific contexts

Note that the thrust of these videos seems to be arguing for/against a particular interpretation of various passages of the Bible - particularly regarding slavery.

Loved this, man! Liked the breakdown and flow. Looking forward to part 3!

Durell Nelson can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.
@@JP-rf8rr
Not really, I've seen the premise of the argument for the problem of evil and it tends to fall flat on its face.

Thanks man. Before this I watched CosmocmicSkeptic's video. I started to panic a little to be honest. And then, after seeing some not so positive comments about God, I saw that a christian (propably) shared your video. I am 14 and I am not so experienced in researching (I am starting to after months of thinking and watching videos, to research by myself) so your video was a reminder that I should not leave it to someguy's answer. But to really really find my own opinion. So I am gonna do that now. I will go back to this topic in the future. There are first others that are more important.
Thanks again, God bless!
Good job buddy. Remember, Hebrew is not a dead language. CosmicSkeptic could have spoken with a native Hebrew speaker to find out the truth, but he wasn't interested in the truth, just in supporting his own preconceived ideas that he holds for emotional reasons. Tragic really, coming from a relatively smart and gifted speaker. Pray for him.
@@timganstrom1907 Hey bud. Thanks for the answer. Just for context I wanted to let you know that within a year after that comment I stopped being an active christian. I gotta admit, Cosmicskeptic used to scare me, but this guy just blew him outta the water!
Thank you soooooo much!!!! I watched Cosmic Skeptic's video and it really made me doubt and also drained my energy. This was exactly what I needed!! THANK GOD!!!
Without a moral absolute (something that is posited by your statement by arguing for "sane people") where does one get a definition for "sanity"
And even today, the widespread belief that slavery is wrong is largely due to the emergence of Christianity in culture.

Sure his parents and family might be devastated, but you would save 6 million jews and much more people around the world if Hitler was killed. Why would it be morally wrong?

Great video! Maybe the third part will cover this, but I'm a bit surprised you didn't include Deut 15: 13f for context of what letting a slave go actually involves:
"And when you let him go free from you, *you shall not let him go empty-handed.* You shall *furnish him liberally* out of your flock, out of your threshing floor, and out of your winepress. As the LORD your God has blessed you, you shall give to him."

Cosmic skeptic is a smart kid but he does not accurately interpret the bible and the sad thing is that alot of the younger kids are listening to him
So thanks for the video
Around 10:20 - list of verses that command foreigners to be treated well
Around 23:10 - another example of treating slaves well
Around 20:30 - An explanation of Exodus 20 and beating slaves
Cosmic Skeptic throughout the video sounded Arrogant, as though he was high above us looking down, meanwhile, WYM was very calm, broke down things to make them more understandable, and yet, he never, at any point, came off sounding arrogant or stuck up.
Well said. This video makes cosmic sceptic look biblically illiterate when it comes to slavery
This was incredibly interesting and illuminating. Thank you.

I think I’ve heard the objection about beating slaves almost to death so often that I had to watch a few times before it clicked - and your right. What I wasn’t getting at first was its not that the owner was off the hook for beating him - he is off the hook for death penality.

Just because most countries have militaries,
doesn’t mean they’re all like ISIS and North Korea.
Just because the Bible includes rich Hebrews who have Bondservants and Maidservants, doesn’t mean they were captured, oppressed, and forced into slavery like what Egypt did to the Hebrews in Exodus.
It’s illegal to do that kind of slavery,
even according to the Bible.
The Bible says
"do not treat foreigners badly"
but also says
"you can beat foreign slaves do any degree as long a they recover after a day or two, and you don't disable or disfigure them permanently."
So, at _best,_ the Bible is inconsistent.
It's really just two different situations. Certain foreigners like resident aliens were considered free men and were not to be bought as slaves, while slaves from surrounding nations could be bought and treated as chattel. Christian apologists like to dress up the former as the latter in order to pretend the Bible says something it doesn't.
@@TheDapperSwindler So, by "treat foreigners well", it means to say "treat well foreigners _who aren't slaves."_
@@JMUDoc Yep - or, to be more precise, don't be harsh to resident aliens who have sold themselves into _debt_ slavery. _Chattel_ slaves, on the other hand, you could do whatever you pleased with.
@Jesus is with me "it doesn’t say you can beat a slave at all"
Exodus 21:20-21
“Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.
Also Deuteronomy 22-23 excludes trade relations between Israel and the nation's around it, making it impossible to buy Gentile slaves anyway
This video is so good. Thanks for this. Those verses can really be easy to be taken out of context. Especially by skeptics/athiest.

Arguement ABSOLUTELY OBLITERATED

It's way better than you have thought, I would have hated it as much as anyone with good sense would, if it were nearly as bad as atheists who'd assert.....
Please watch this video carefully again, this has been made well enough..... These agreements can't be an issue as they have so many things disagreeing with it and destroying the arguments way before all the things are put together...
You are thinking and you are an intellectual person, and thinking and reading will be helpful.....
There’s many places in history as well where children and wives are referred to as the property of the husband, workers in many places are referred to as properly as well.
Thank you for making this video. Your knowledge of the word, respect and honesty inspire me!
You have a new subscriber in me brother...been checking out a few of your videos and was very impressed...keep the faith!
This was what i needed. Thank you so Much! 👏👏👏
Thank you so very much! I've been struggling with this. I know to sit tight, pray & wait for Yahweh to show me where I'm in error, and as ALWAYS, Yahweh delivered. I'm so SO very grateful for slaves of Jesus the Christ such as you and Alan Parr.
I saw this video in search of a reply to one of my friends bringjng out the slave bible and blaming god and the bible being a tool for slave, this is such and in dept responce ty!! I jjst sent him you link
New sub! Big fan!
Hey Braxton, great to read from ya. I thought you did great in your debate with dillahunty!
@@whaddoyoumeme I really appreciate that. The response has been pretty great. I'm trying to get my TH-cam game going. You inspire me, brother.
Crushed it, bro! You inspire me.
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback!
Also, I did mention the runaway slaves verse later on in the series. Thanks again for the comment!
Thanks a video full of awe for that maker of the source vid. I am sure he would also have problem with me saying I do not like him or his presentation but love him just the same.
