Hey Mike, thanks for sharing! I agree 💯 with your take on Aerosmith. Their 70’s (and best, imo) stuff was nothing like what they did in the late 80s/early 90s. They became a totally different band when they started writing with outside writers like Desmond Child, Diane Warren and Marti Frederiksen. It was a very commercially successful period for them and put them in heavy rotation on radio and MTV, but they lost me as a fan. I think of Done With Mirrors as the last “true” Aerosmith album. BTW, my vote for Greatest American Rock Band: DLR-era Van Halen!!
From 'Pump' onward, every single Aerosmith album sounds like a Desmond Child, Holly Knight and Diane Warren, 'Best Of', album. Imo, Aerosmith almost had 2 careers. First, they were a great American rock band. In their second career, they were a soundtrack, FM radio ballad band. I was born in 81..so the first Aerosmith album that I got when it came out was Pump. That is probably the reason why I have never been a huge Aerosmith fan. I've listened to all of their stuff..but I was never a huge, super fan.
I was never an Aerosmith fan. Steve never appealed to me. But Lynyrd Skynyrd. That’s America to me. Love southern rock. Kansas was one too. Saw them in 1995 opening for Styx. Kansas blew Styx away. But I agree with Skynyrd ❤at the end of the day. Great content my friend!!
Love me some RVZ era Skynyrd. I would take BÖC as my best American band. They kept the main core of the band together for 10 years. Wrote 3 bonafide radio classics. Their studio albums from those years are stellar. And a superb live act
I think if they survived into the 80’s they would’ve dabbled in the hair metal look and music. They probably would’ve toured with Whitesnake opening for Motley Crue. They would’ve done MTV videos with the hair extension look.
In terms of impact I’ll probably also add Grateful Dead , they did almost like a cult , and on the mainstream side I’ll probably also add Fleetwood Mac (also rock)
It's hard to argue against Skynyrd. Comparing 70s Aerosmith to post-80s Smith. It's kind of like comparing Dave-era Van Halen to Spam Hagar-era VH. I think the Ramones deserve a mention. The Ramones might not have sold records, but their lasting worldwide impact and influence on culture and music put them in the conversation.
Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Kiss and VH. Mostly 70’s. Great pick! I got into Skynyrd later. Always loved their songs, but a few years ago the original era of struck me as the best American band. They were the best musicians and the song writing is top notch. Many people don’t know this and just dismiss Skynyrd. And Aerosmith did sound terrible live. RVZ made them play like the record. They took it very seriously. Great pick and it surprised me a little you picked them. Working For MCA. Just writing a song threatening his record company not to screw them. A very simple and intelligent man. The deep cuts on their albums so good. Anyone that knew RVZ said listen to his lyrics and that was him. Billy Powell was their secret weapon imo. I agree 100% with your take. I would have loved to see them in 74’. That was their prime with Ed King on the guitar.
In my mind, I could not decide on a definitive American rock band. The bands that come to mind are The Doors, Eagles, Skynrd, Ramones, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick and Roth era Van Halen. Though I’m not a big fan, Springsteen and the E Street Band could be considered “band”. It’s a tough question.
If I’m going strictly off your criteria, specifically the effect of the music on American people, then obviously The Eagles and CCR would rank higher than Skynyrd
Almost went wild until I read the question a second time. I will agree Skynyrd hands down. Areosmith great party band their second coming was a band that had others write their hits. Skynyrd was a professional outfit, no doubt. One More For The Road was probably the best live album ever done. I think Skynyrd is probably Americas Zeppelin! I love Cheap Trick, but again, it's very pop imo! I would pick a band like Boston over CT. Then there is Chicago great band, but all over as far genre. I could put J.Giles in there, but again very pop. So there is no one I can think of no one better than the Southern boys.
I think music creation ability is very similar to athletic ability. In a sense where it grows, gets better, then peaks at prime for a while. Then slowly starts to fade away. Some bands able to peak & stay relevant for much longer than others. Similar to some athletes playing for years. While others only make it a couple of seasons.
Aerosmith were my 2nd favorite band up until Pump. Rock In A Hard Place is my favorite. Sooo sleazy. Cant go wrong with Aerosmith and Skynrd. KISS is my favorite though then The Stooges
Not a "better than" or "instead of" - a couple of superb American bands in my book are Creedence Clearwater Revival and Blue Öyster Cult. A roll-down-the-windows-driving classic rock band in CCR, and balanced by the weird guys in BÖC.
I'm not an American. However, if you asked most Europeans (in my experience) who they know and/or love, Skynyrd would barely feature. Even if we ignore 80s/90s Aerosmith. CCR gets more love than Skynyrd and is a far better band than Lynyrd Skynyrd... Just my opinion. Love your posts! Love and respect from Scotland.
There isnt one...now. It USED to be Allman Brothers,Skynyrd and Grand Funk Railroad. F Aerosmith btw. After and including Done with Mirrors they are complete drivel. Their only contribution post Done was the proliferation of scarves on every band/stage/mic stand in the 80s.
Metallica kicked ass thru grunge and ruled the airwaves from 91 and even today kids pick up a guitar because of enter sandman.. take that into account of the influence they had during their thrash years as well.. continuing on after cliff.. the story of the band.. TWO GREAT American metal bands that are globally renowned came from the early days of Metallica
Can’t say I disagree. 2 of my favorite bands! The proof of what you are saying is in all the tons of times I’ve seen local bands and someone always says “play Freebird” !!!
"Saturday Night Special" my favorite Skynard tune.
🙌 thanks for watching 🙏
KISS for me, I love everything they put out

Fave Skynyrd song, On the Hunt, Allen Collins riff
Great riff! Thanks for watching 🙏
Grand Funk Railroad.
Great band! Thanks for watching 🙏
Interesting choice. Cheap Trick makes some sense but I can’t argue with what you’ve put forth here.
Thank you for the comment and thanks for watching 🙏
Never thought about them as the “greatest”, but it’s hard to argue with your point…
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching 🙏
Kiss and aerosmith. Growing up in the northeast in the 70s that's really all we knew about
True. Thanks for watching 🙏
Great band indeed

Lynard Skynard is low life music. Too much like country music to even be called rock!
@@bitchbusters8914 Nothing low life about it-as American as the Doors gulping down Beer & Burritos.:)

Agree. I saw BOC twice in 1976 and also in 1978. Great band. Solid. Always delivered.
I think if they survived into the 80’s they would’ve dabbled in the hair metal look and music. They probably would’ve toured with Whitesnake opening for Motley Crue. They would’ve done MTV videos with the hair extension look.
Quite possible! Thanks for watching 🙏
Spot on , well explained and I have to agree with you. Lynyrd Skynyrd 100% !!!
Thank you and thanks for watching 🙏
In terms of impact I’ll probably also add Grateful Dead , they did almost like a cult , and on the mainstream side I’ll probably also add Fleetwood Mac (also rock)
Dead definitely had major impact. Thanks for watching 🙏
Fleetwood Mac isn't/wasnt American until Bob Welch brought them to America. 3/5 of the band still british with Stevie/Lindsay
@teecuzbruh4058 true . Thanks for commenting 🙏
Skynyrd, followed closely by Allmans,A kinda Southern Cream that rises to the top like Peach Custard Pie:)But what do I know?
God,you're so right on about the direct simplicity of the lyrics,& the "piano rolls' or "triplicates" sprinkled thru their timeless music!:)🙏
Good stuff! Thanks for watching 🙏

Yes! 1973. Who Quadriohenia tour . Keith Moon parties with them every night . Thanks for watching 🙏
I wish it could be the New York Dolls, The Stooges, or Cheap Trick - but it's probably honestly KISS or Aerosmith, maybe Van Halen!

Once bands get sober and rich, the music usually sucks from that point forward. Imo, of course. The edge is gone.

The greatest american rock band is ZZ Top, Skynyrd is close. I'm biased because Frank Beard is one of my favorite drummers
ZZ is a Great band ! Thanks for watching 🙏
Frank didn't even play on those mid to late 80s albums
@ Because those albums suk. Check out his playing on Tejas from 76'. Don't get me wrong, Eliminator is cool but 70s ZZ was the greatest
Lynyrd Skynyrd

Led zepplin they seldom played anyplace but america and were an american lable spent most of their profesional lives here 😀

RAMONES
