I share his view entirely. Why is it in a Chrishian country we are encouraged to respect rammadan and other minority religious celebrations but we can't mention Christmas for fear of offending
We need to stop with this ‘christian country’ thing. You cant mock christianity, ridicule its core tenets and religious people, and actively promote everything it stands against and call it a ‘christian country’ or even a ‘cultural christian’.
Since when has anyone been discouraged of discussing Christmas. From the end if September shops are starting to advertise and stock for Christmas, all cities and most town centres have a Christmas tree and Christmas lights, at my children's school November and December are jam packed with Christmas events, we have Christmas markets, Christmas pantos, the list goes on. All this over some ligts put up in london which were paid for by private donations and not public expenditure
Visit Teheran in December and see all the stores selling Xmas stuff. Haven’t you ever mixed or spoken to anyone in the UK of another faith, they acknowledge Xmas you absolute ninnie.
Anyone who identifies as a cultural Christian, yet would not hesitate to mock or belittle Christianity in their next breath, is truly a fairweather friend and should be called out for their lack of generosity towards the culture whose perks they readily enjoy on a daily basis. There's absolutely no requirement as an atheist to denigrate a belief that helped inspire the rise of your civilization and was a necessary step to believe in along the way to the discovery of thoughts you now hold. To not acknowledge this is to be simply uncharitable, poorly-read and intellectually dishonest.
For who doesn't understand, He is saying that he celebrates Christian Festival so that he can enjoy with friends and family. Festivals are great to meet friends and family and have fun. It doesn't mean you have to worship Jesus if you celebrate Christmas. Hope it make sense.
I know that not every Christian is going to be satisfied with the cultural Christian thing, but I had a bit of a moment myself that the chief atheist seems to have softened to Christianity enough to even say that.
Why do we have to dissect him for his nostalgic memory and live for his country. Sometimes people need to stop and appreciate free speech and stop getting offended. This wasn’t any kind of hate speech or anything, just appreciate the people for what they’re and their perspectives.
Well, I'm an agnostic, and I love the Parthenon and greek and Roman architecture and arts in general. That doesn't mean I believe in Athens or Zeus. The irony that most practicing Christians don't have any of these hate based hangups that Dawkins is espousing. Come to think of it neither are most atheists fearful of some "replacement theory" mambo jumbo.

Thank you, as I was looking for a word that describes normal people that live by the laws of the land, as most laws have roots dating back to Christian values. It is these values we don't want undermind, but sadly, they are, and not just by other religions but the religion of money too. I am a cultural christian and will be proud to use this from now on.
Lukewarm Christian is the actual term, but you do you.
Being a cultural Christian is an oxymoron and people will think you're dense if you describe yourself this way. Most people in most countries are law abiding citizens, you don't need a term you are the norm.
@Neil-qg9cw I disagree, most native people are law-abiding citizens, not sure I can say the same for other culture's. I know I might be addressing the worst of them, but in my trade the blatant disregard of the law is palpable and not sure it is much different for most commerce.
Can't have your cake and eat it too Dickey...especially on Ramadan !
That’s how most feel about religion nowadays, we like the moral compass and if we all behaved more Christian we’d have zero worries in our country other than our health and that of if loved ones. ❤

He is making perfect sense. There is nothing contradictory in being an atheist but appreciating the beauty of cathedral architecture or liturgical music.
Is that supposed to be a revolutionary new idea? It's extremely obvious that an atheist can still appreciate architecture. Why does that end at Christianity? Plenty of interesting architecture from other religions as well. It's a load of waffle.
As an atheist I agree but Dawkins has criticised that aspect of Christianity as well for years. So it is weird for him to come out in defence of it, especially mentioning it in the same breathe as Ramadan. Essentially, he is saying he will pick one religion over another.
What's worrying is that 90% of these comments cannot grasp this simple concept.

Why is it in a Chrishian country we are encouraged to respect rammadan and other minority religious celebrations but we can't mention Christmas for fear of offending
No one is stopping you from mentioning Christmas - and I highly doubt anyone is 'offended' when you do.
@@Mounhas also if you go to dubai, the malls go all out for Christmas
Anyone who identifies as a cultural Christian, yet would not hesitate to mock or belittle Christianity in their next breath, is truly a fairweather friend and should be called out for their lack of generosity towards the culture whose perks they readily enjoy on a daily basis. There's absolutely no requirement as an atheist to denigrate a belief that helped inspire the rise of your civilization and was a necessary step to believe in along the way to the discovery of thoughts you now hold. To not acknowledge this is to be simply uncharitable, poorly-read and intellectually dishonest.

I know that not every Christian is going to be satisfied with the cultural Christian thing, but I had a bit of a moment myself that the chief atheist seems to have softened to Christianity enough to even say that.
Richard dawkins is a joker
Atheists failed to realize that people want purpose, not deconstruction of religions or nihilism.
Why do we have to dissect him for his nostalgic memory and live for his country. Sometimes people need to stop and appreciate free speech and stop getting offended. This wasn’t any kind of hate speech or anything, just appreciate the people for what they’re and their perspectives.
❤ Richard Dawkins he is one of the Greatest Scientists and Intellectuals in History
Well, I'm an agnostic, and I love the Parthenon and greek and Roman architecture and arts in general. That doesn't mean I believe in Athens or Zeus. I also love the culture created by Christianity in terms of arts, music, etc. For example, I love Johann Sebastian Bach. That doesn't mean we have to believe in the mythology behind it.
So one minute he wants rid the world of religion because its a mind virus and next minute he likes Christianity because he wants to sing a couple hymns? Like what bro?
If you come to this country you have to embrace and accept the country’s culture. You don’t have to follow it but you must respect it. If you don’t want to then go to another country that had the same values and traditions.
