After watching your video carefully, I replaced my fuel injection in 5 hours, and it worked perfectly. I think I am ready for another 200K on my Suburban. Thank you for a great example.
Did this a week ago and man is she running smooth. Thanks for your awesome instructions which made this possible!!! I took it all apart in about an hour on a Friday night and it took me about 3 hours to get it back together. I took pics of all the bolts so as not to misplace any. She get's better fuel economy too.
Sometimes seeing someone else do it can give you the confidence to do it yourself. I’ve been putting this repair off about a year and my suburban has been sitting the entire time. I now have a renewed interest. Thank you!
Thank you so much. This was a truly great video. I am the original owner of my 99 Suburban. It now has 170K miles and it really never ran right (misfires, check engine light always on… you know the drill). It had the older style injectors replaced about 100K miles ago. It also had the lower intake gaskets replaced twice (water leaks). Repairs like this kept the truck running halfway decent and generally not leaking. But it still never ran right. I just did this MFI fuel injector conversion. I also opted not to move the AC compressor. I did it in a single afternoon. Really not too difficult, but only because I watched your video and knew exactly what to do. Without the video, I would not have even tried it. The truck runs so much better now. Just passed NJ inspection, no problem. Definitely saved this truck from an early grave.
I know this vid is over two years old, but you are the man, can't thank you enough as me and my son tackled this today on his 99 K1500, step by step.....THANK YOU!!!
Thank You so much for an outstanding demo. I am a mechanic from days gone by (70 to 90) and now own a 1998 chevy truck with injector problems. every thing was very helpfull---Very well detailed and to the point. Started my project and finished in just under 2 hours.THANKS AGAIN
@@ronvonbargen8411 The video was only half an hour [so perhaps 1 hour for the entire job]. With the right tools handy, it could easily be done in two hours.
Hey thanks Brian! Did this in a '99 Denali I got for free cuz it was misfiring badly. I diagnosed it to a couple of bad injectors and watched your video because I haven't done one of these before. All good now and runs like a champ!
You're the first person I've ever heard or kind of met that even knew who Temple it is. I have a daughter with autism and I have read her book and it was incredibly enlightening. You should try doing this when you're 5 foot 10 it's flipping miserable! Of course my truck sets up higher in my driveway is about 2 degrees short of being an Olympic ski jump. No joke if you drop a socket in my driveway start walking to the street cuz that's where you're going to find it. I enjoyed the video
Thanks Brian! Did this upgrade this weekend and it was much easier after watching this. Fuel pressure regulator was leaking and was hard to start hot, so did the whole upgrade instead of just the FPR. Took about 2 hours of actual work - and 2 more to clean the carbon mess that resided under that cover. The tip of putting the injectors in first, then pushing the spider down until it locked was spot on a well. My Vortec runs so much smoother now. Thanks again!
I am handy with an engine, but was worried about getting everything out of the way and/or doing them in the right order. Followed you sequence and was a quick disassemble and reassemble. Can't thank you enough for taking the time to make and post this video. I brilliantly decided to do this on the coldest day we have had this year so took a bit longer as I stuck a heater under the hood to warm everything up for a bit to try and avoid the tabs on the old injectors snapping off and falling into the engine. It worked though. Gave me time to get a couple cups of coffee and warm myself back up.
Just replaced this and the fuel pressure regulator on a friends 1996 K1500 5.7L Tahoe. Watched the video. Total job took 3 hrs 30 mins start to finish. Thanks for posting this video
Success! I got mine in! I heated the tubing midly with a heat gun.. got it just right. No stress on the tubing, no collapse. Of course my engine is out on a stand so that made a big diff. Thanks again. On to detail and re-assembly!
Hey Brian, Not sure it matters any more but the SCPI stands for Sequential Centeral Port Injection. Crappy Diesel type poppet injectors that were opened by a valve inside the middle of the spider unit. For those who do not know this style injector will not operate if the fuel pressure gets below 50 PSI. The new unit is true Multi Port Injection where the injector pintle is opened via a solenoid at the end of each injector. This is why there is a couple of wires heading down the fuel lines for each injector. This was the best fix I ever did on my 98 Silverado.
There are situations under the spider cover that can damage multi port wires, valve leakage and fire pops, plastic fire and heat sufficient to melt wire insulation. Multi port tubes are bigger diam, I had one break near the intake manifold, so engine totally fills with fuel. I recommend the SCPI with pintel torpedoes up in the spider body, a line break is less likely and does not fill engine with fuel. Mike Reynolds, below, many new parts and no luck - sometimes the bearings on the distributor, and the gear, are so worn that consistent spark is impossible. I grind a spare cap to expose the brass and check the spark life at each line to plugs, when you short the STRONG spark the engine slows. When you short a dead cylinder the engine does not slow. Dead cylinder can be due to crud after distributor goes bad, or due to dead pintel in spider. The cap grind trick is rather definitive, you can see faulty spark power, 1/3 size sparks with an occasional full size spark means the distributor bearings wobble and the trigger is confused, timing is off.
Thank you for the video. I followed your instructions yesterday to do my friends 79 suburban 5.7 liter. Thanks so much- couldn't have done it without the video. The spider cost 300 bucks at Auto Zone and they had it in stock. I saw the same part at other places for 450 bucks. On his 79 I left the ac compressor, but did have to remove the thermostat housing to allow the manifold to lift up and off the heads, as part of it was directly underneath.
Thanks Brian! I've been watching your videos over the past few years and I always watch your videos before I repair something I'm not familiar with. I'm getting ready to change out my spider. Good teacher and easy on the ears. Thanks for sharing! Tony
man i love your style of demonstration straight to the point and articulate in a average joe , so everyone understands type way... keep up the good work you've helped mw on several projects...
Well, Just picked a MPFi at AZ. I did not want to have to replace the original but.. The fuel in O-ring was split and I did not want to have any fires or pay 9.00 for one from the dealer. Installing a new crate 350 for a 305, so might as well do it right. Thanks for the informative videos! Enjoy the the general talk that goes along with your videos. You must be a Sagitarian..
Enjoyed the video and learned a lot. I even enjoyed all the commentary. I had never seen the inner workings of the spider injector system. Thanks for taking the time to make detailed videos.
I have thirty years plus mechanical experience. I'' ll say you talk a lot, but it is both with humor or educational, lol. Keep it up, I'm scribing. Well Done.
Thanks for this video! I have been having engine misfires and running rich. With the help of this video I successfully swapped out the spider injector and voila! The truck has never run better! Thanks again!
Thanks a million, needed to change my lower intake manifold gasket and while i had it off might as well change the injectors, 220,000 miles, wont be long before they would give me problems anyway, looks like i ordered the same that you have in the video. lots of carbon build up on the front 4 so it its preventive maintance time.
The crowsfoot flarenut wrench that you use to disconnect the fuel lines in the back is the way to go. The firewall makes it tight to fit a normal 16mm wrench in there. The crowsfoot wrench made it easy. I just replaced a leaking fuel pressure regulator in mine. A lot of work just to replace that one little part but necessary. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Brian, kept my iPad handy for a step by step and pulled it apart in no time. Took a little longer to put it back together. I actually had about 1/2 inch of standing gas in the main connector of "the creature of darkness." I had no codes, but the symptoms all seemed right. Runs like a dream now. Thanks again.
Just wanted to add another thanks Brian... great video. I swapped out the CSFI on my 99 K1500... big job for me, but got it done. Super hard to get the injector body down in the bracket....another set of hands would have made it much easier! Anyway...just wanted to say THANKS! People helping people...love the attitude you have!
Thanks Brian! Great video! Van runs great now! Number 5 cylinder was running lean. Figured it had a bad injector. Tried fuel additives of course none if them worked. Not wanting to burn a valve I just knew I needed to replace that injector. I was worried it was a little over my head. After watching your video and going back to it when needed it was a breeze! I appreciate it so much that you posted this video! Thanks again!
Very good, thank you. I have to do my 99 Suburban real soon, 240k on it & the spider assy is the only thing I haven't replaced. Now I will feel a little better about doing this job.
thanks brain for your time I replaced the spider a few months ago and i think the upper gasket is leaking so im going to do it again could you tell me the symptons of a leaking upper gasket leak also when i was done the top of the spider was not all the way thru the intake plug went in but it was like the spider assy was lower then when i took it apart also you did not talk about the torque sequence on the reinstall and the proper way to re-tighten the upper intake if i jump on it truck starts acting like its not getting enough fuel starts to like miss drive it easy no problems expect bad gas mileage idles fines and starts right up
I just used your vidso to do this in my 97 c1500 305 v8. This was a huge help and took the guesswork out of what had to be removed and what didn't. Thanks a lot man!!!!! Keep wrenching and keep making vids we appreciate it!!!!
I use a pair of dental picks and just be gentle. Remember that if you do break them off there are ways to get them out again. There's metal in the tips so magnets work. And if all else fails, putting a new lower intake gasket in is actually a really good thing to do while you're in there.
I have the same truck. Only starts when I prime the throttle body. Starts runs alright to drive around. Soon as I shut it off it wont even start with a prime.
Thanks for the video. I have a 1999 5.0 express van and could not find a video of this conversion for my van. I feared this job would be more difficult on a van as everything is. It turned out to be a very easy job. Having access through the cab hatch eliminated having to remove the compressor and belt.
Thank You Brian for the video. It helped me get a true perspective on the job at hand and it was there to always go back to during the weekend job. It was rewarding to complete the job with your guidance and the result was awesome after the test drive yesterday. Thank You again for taking the time to make this video.
Brian Thanks for the video. I actually watched it 3 times then changed the spiders on my K1500 Chevy truck. Without your help I wouldn't of been able to dot it. It was tough though I would not want to do it again. I salute you good sir.
This is the de facto video on how to do a spider. With some salient folk philosophy thrown in. Thanks a ton for this video. I have since done three of these rascals. This is one of those jobs that looks daunting at first, but is easy if you do what brian says. These things are very brittle. Like he says, warm it up if it's below 70 degrees. Use the included tool to twist the legs into place. If you don't, your chances of breaking one of the legs goes up 10x. I will add one observation, of course. Do NOT insert the white nozzles until you are 100% sure everything is situated correctly. If you need to take one out, forget it. Impossible. I had to make a tool out of a paint can opener to extract stuck nozzles and on a van, that's about an hour apiece in less than comfortable conditions. They give you a couple extra nozzles in a baggy. For the life of me, I can't figure out why. Thanks again, Brian,. Great video.
Thank you for your super informative video! You explained every step in detail which makes it so easy to follow along. Gave me the confidence I needed to tackle this job myself!
Fantastic, since youtube bans music playing while you shoot your vids , I find the commentary quite enlightening. “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.” Merci Steve.
Thanks for your infoe, Later on today..Wednesday...I am going to do my own work on my 1996 Chevy 3/4 ton. This is the first time I have ever seen what you call a spider injection. At first Dave and I could not find the Injectors, so he told me to do some research. Looking at your video, I am sure it will help me a lot. Thank you.
Thank you so much I have a 96 k1500 and I have been chasing a ghost trying to find out why he's misfiring I bought him new spark plugs, plug wires, O2 sensors, distributor cap and rotor and ignition coil and nothing really solved the problem he's throwing the p0300 code which is random multiple misfire after doing more research and watching your video I'm confident I can fix my ride up he got 257,500 miles and is a great truck ive had it for 11 years id hate to park him for good thank you thank you!
I have 1998 5.7 vortec and it has developed a miss or skip that I can't find, i have changed everything electrical, but now thinking spider may be the culprit, but i don't think I'm a good enough wrench to tackle this project.....dude I wish you were in North florida, cause you are the man on this fix and would love if you did mine. thanks for posting video.
I listen to music almost constantly when I'm not filming. Usually dance music because it's happy, upbeat, and motivating. So.... it front and center when I'm working on stuff.
Thanks for the reply, it turned out to be something completely easy. During reinstall I made a completely noob mistake, 2 spark plug wires going into the cap were crossed, due to a shadow, couldn't see very well :) i fixed it within 5 minutes of posting my original comment. anyhow, my truck now runs better than ever. Incredible results. Perfect starts, hot or not. Everyone needs to do this.. Its very easy and the results are well worth the few hours.
Great instructional video! I hope I never have to do this, but at least I know there is a step by step video to help me out. Remebering how to put things back in the right place is my problem, I take lots of pics or video the procedure to assist me later. Thanks for the demo and keep up the great work!
I just did this on my 97 Tahoe. Couple things: you can buy the delphi unit on amazon for much less than various retailers and MUCH cheaper than dealer and comes with the new hold down clip though its not mentioned. The injectors going out are also associated with having a constant or consistent miss fire code, mine was Cyl 7. I'm not sure if you discussed any miss fire codes, I did my best to watch the whole 36 minutes but I do not recall hearing it mentioned.
I think I'm going to get to do this enjoyable task next week on my 97 Suburban - good spark, good compression, but a misfire on cyl #8. Thanks for the video! I'm tempted to do lower intake gaskets as well since they're such common problems on these engines but this was a really cheap truck so I think I'll take my chances.
Thank you sir for this very informative video. I may be facing this task in the near future. Also I absolutely agree with you on freedom. I just wish more people cared about the freedom we're trying to keep.
Yes- sea foam and lucas. Just only use about 1/4 of what they recommend. Excessive use just coats your upper cylinder with white concrete-like substance.
Good teacher, thanks for the tripod. Have a 96 5.7L vortec in my suburb, Just quit while driving and wont start. Has 320K miles on it. Have good spark. Fuel pump works. Fuel pump regulator ok. Has gas at the rail. All elec power and grounds at the spider cap are good. Will start and run if I pour gas in the throtle body port. I suspect the spider fuel injector is bad. Gonna attempt a first time replacement because of your great video. Sould I look elswhere first?
Thanks brother. My wife and I have decided to by older vehicles for this reason.....we can work on them and parts are aplenty. She chose a 97 2dr Tahoe 4x4 and I'm running around in a 97 Landcruiser. We love our twin 97s. She just shot hers with Line-x and it look beautiful. I'll be doing this job this weekend along with plugs and wires along with an upgraded alternator and starter. Should take me 2-2 1/2 days God willing. Thanks for taking the time and caring enough to educate us. You're a great teacher. Your kids are lucky. I got grounded as a teen whenever my Dad caught me trying to work on my own vehicles. He always made me take my truck to a mechanics shop. By the time I got to college I had no time to learn. But now....
Nice job explaining - while you're working on the removal/replacement... Not sure if I would have attempted this project w/o your help ... Now, I can watch & pause as I go -- Thanks to YOUR video !!
Thanks for posting this video Brian! Your calm way of talking while doing the job really helped me when I tackled this job yesterday. I watched your video about 4 times then decided I was able to do this. It's been a little cool this week so I used one of the others comment suggestions and used my heat gun "very" carefully to warm up the plastic tubing and everything worked out great. The most nerve racking parts was snapping the unit into the bracket but with patience it went right in. I don't have a garage so I had to do this outside. My truck started right up and runs like a new one. Dennis
YES. He's the only politician I can think of that has consistently voted in alignment with Habeas Corpus, the Constitution, and rule of law in general. The man has a serious character, love, and desire to serve the American people. Aside from Gary Johnson- you can't find any others doing that as long or as consistently as Congressman Dr.Ronald Ernest Paul. He's a powerhouse that performs under pressure for YOUR freedoms. He's ignored and spin doctored by the media or he'd be MUCH more popular.
My Yukon has a similar engine and I had a very similar problem. I had misfire codes on 7 of 8 cylinders. New plug fixed one cylinder but had 6 injectors failing intermittently. Spider swap got rid of it. Just fixed it on 3/5/13.
Great video, very clear and good instruction. Please do more like this. I have the same truck and had to do this procedure. This made my day. Thanks man
Great Video ! Coulldn't have done it without your video, probely would not have even tried! Finish New Spider Injection install Last night ! Truck runs like new now ! I didn't even have to remove ac compressor like you did! It was a pain in the ass job but I am sure I saved at least a grand in labor charges ! Thanks Again !
Try checking it for vacuum leaks at the obvious spots being hoses. They can have small cracks hard to see. Spray all around hoses and intake with carb or brake cleaner. If the motor smooths out you found your leak. Or try cleaning IAC in throttle body. IAC being Idle Air Control.
It was not bad.. I clicked in the unit before putting the injectors in the holes. Seemed easier for me. Just keep up where the different size bolts go..
UPDATE: Brian, I loosen the screw that holds the bracket and raised it a little which brought the injector up higher. I decided to change the bracket since my spider injector came with a new on. My wife is a nurse so she gave me some surgi lube and everything worked out fine. she's running great, like the day I bought her. I got 231,000 miles on her and hope to keep on going ! Thanks for your video..John
No. It means that bank is too lean. That could be a loss of fuel, (like a stuck or blocked injector) or MORE air like from a vacuum leak. OR an oxygen sensor on that bank that is contaminated or burned out. Usually if an injector fails it's just one and the code will be a misfire code on that cylinder.
Brian,Thanks for the video. After installing the spider,I went to start the truck and a made a knocking sound and the engine seemed to just freeze up.It won't start at all.Do you have any idea what could be wrong?
I would take your VIN # to the dealership and get whatever they have. I use aftermarket and performance parts most of the time, but in this case with this part the dealership has the latest updated part. There have been SO MANY updates on these dang things. You can get the old factory ones that are name brand- they get dumped onto the after market, but they are obsolete.
Another great video Brian, I remember when you did the one an the 4.3 and helped me on swapping mine out, especially using the crows foot on the fuel lines . I've since swapped my engine for the 5.7 but I'm thinking about going carbureted or TBI (not a big fan of the spider). Anyways thanks for making these great vids, I enjoy watching them
Yea, the mercruiser version of those engines has an intake with individual injectors, and itll bolt on to the block. From there you can goto bigger injectors to make up for forced induction etc, even goto a megasquirt system and that kinda stuff.
thatswhite1 I had changed the Cab twice before...so I am confident that it is not the issue. It started shortly after I changed plugs wires cap with all accel set. ill keep playing with it even though the truck has sat like 2 years now. LOL
good video man,i wish there where bigger trucks in the uk to work on!i would get the sack if i released aircon gas to the atmosphere...keep the videos flowing!
GOOD QUESTION. She's fine, (I saw her today in fact) she's just working on another project at the moment. She says she want's to come back in a week or two. We'll see what happens.
Great help thank you. Im curious what your take on injector cleaners.additives ect. Do they work or should I just get down to it and replace spyder (injectors spyder was diagnosed bad) thanks again

Great video, good job, when pulling apart so many harnesses, I like to mark them with green painters tape, makes them stick out like a sore thumb.
Thank for the video, will be referring back to it in a week when I take on this project. Keep the Chevy Vortex videos coming as I depend on mine daily
You are an excellent teacher, thanks for the instructions!
Can't stress enough how much i liked this video!
Thanks Allen. And thanks for subscribing! Most people just watch and run. Seriously- like 95% of my views.
I'm going to change my fuel injector spider on my '99 Suburban this Saturday. I'll let you know how it went. Thanks for the great video.
So true on the Freedom... MAGA !! ;-)
Awesome job man thanks for the video!!!!
Dennis
Brian what technical college did you attend? You do a great job at explaining everything too.
He's ignored and spin doctored by the media or he'd be MUCH more popular.
would bad spider injectors cause over fueling into the exhaust and cause your catalytic converters to get red hot
Thank you very much! I followed your instructions and it runs like new now!
Great video. I'm going to get it done in a week or so. I'll post on how it went once I'm done
well.... how did it go?
I get to do this first thing in the A.M...
Thank you for the tutorial!!
It was not bad.. I clicked in the unit before putting the injectors in the holes. Seemed easier for me. Just keep up where the different size bolts go..
I love watching the struggle, this is my favorite kind of video to watch from you.
Thank You for posting this video! Awesome job! I don't understand why those 17 boobs didn't like your video.
Great video planning on doing the spider change some. Engine running rich 4 and 7 plugs are wet. There is alot of fuel in the base to.
My dad was a tech and started me when I was 8. I did attend a local university that had a program, but tested out pretty quick.
This is the second time I have heard a reference to the 90's song wiggle it. So I take it that you took the song to heart.
You are the man!! Helped so much with my truck!
Anyways thanks for making these great vids, I enjoy watching them
Not sure on the year of your vehicle, but first thing to mind is the kick down cable/adjustment at the throttle.
very good vid brian good work, I'm doin a Silverado with the same vortec motor in it, very instructional, thanks for your help!!
2022 cost of that manifold and gasket is $119 on the cheap side. OEM starts around $220. Crazy
Yea, the mercruiser version of those engines has an intake with individual injectors, and itll bolt on to the block. From there you can goto bigger injectors to make up for forced induction etc, even goto a megasquirt system and that kinda stuff.
@27:24 - shout out for the Temple Grandin reference!
Thanks for the video Brian it really helped me to "wrap" my head around the job.
Welcome Al. Great to see you!
Thanks!!! I changed out the spider and regulator and still have a non start condition. Will do further testing.
Check for spark. It could be the CKP, control module, or coil.
distributor cap always malfunctions on these engines causing no start
thatswhite1 I had changed the Cab twice before...so I am confident that it is not the issue. It started shortly after I changed plugs wires cap with all accel set. ill keep playing with it even though the truck has sat like 2 years now. LOL
After install have u ever had the upper intake blow apart
No.
Nice video! I'll be doing my new creature of darkness this weekend!
good video man,i wish there where bigger trucks in the uk to work on!i would get the sack if i released aircon gas to the atmosphere...keep the videos flowing!
GOOD QUESTION. She's fine, (I saw her today in fact) she's just working on another project at the moment. She says she want's to come back in a week or two. We'll see what happens.
Solid video.
awesome video, my 97 tahoe just needed this.
with my shade tree skills and your video I got errr done!
you are my new hero!
Test for exhaust flow, fuel pressure, and vacuum leaks.
You bet. If you can get your hands on either the TBI or MPFI that's the best thing to do.
Brian,
Do you believe in using any type of fuel injector cleaner ? Laquer Thinner ? Seafoam ? Lucas ? Or ??
Thanks Brandon,
Great help thank you. Im curious what your take on injector cleaners.additives ect. Do they work or should I just get down to it and replace spyder (injectors spyder was diagnosed bad) thanks again
Howdy from Missoula. Thank you, Needed this for my 96 Tahoe, its been dripping gas on the heads and you can smell it out the tailpipe. Thank you Thank you!
Thank you for the video. It helped make the job easier, and the rant on freedom... I guess it goes well with Chevy trucks.
Stop fighting me creature of darkness!😂
