    I am absolutely loving this series! The 308 is my all time favorite Ferrari and yes partially because of Magnum PI also ( I actually liked that show and watch the new remake of it). My dream was always to do what you are doing. 👍 It may still happen one day but after a devastating accident and now partially disabled I am on a extremely limited budget but have boat loads of time. Nice work! Matt.

    Beginners and experts both make mistakes. The difference is that the experts know several ways to recover from those errors. Showing both the mistake and the solution makes the video much more useful than a carefully edited, apparently flawless, process.

    Sorry, know I'm making lots of captain obvious comments but:
    I find when dismantling something, I use paper lunch bags. I write on the outside what is in them, then use a skinny long box to put them in in reverse order. That means the transfer case nuts would go in first, then they are the last things you get to when you're putting it back together. Then you'd put in the snap rings and the funky retainer nuts and you could even go full Felix Unger and put each gear in a bag in the order you took them off.......
    One bonus of video taping things these days? you have a record of how things came apart and in what order. Back in the day, it was all memory.

  • @muskokamike127
    @muskokamike127 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You been taking drawing classes lou? hehehe
    BTW: that odd nut? I had a similar thing on the clutch on my honda 400/4. I didn't have the skills back then to make one but the "cheap and cheerful" way is to get a crappy socket that matches the outside diameter of those nuts and notch it to fit those indents.

      @@LouTrottier If you need any help with drawings or set up etc, let me know. I've been working with cnc for 20 years.
      Not so much with plasma but the operation is the same.
      Just an FYI: a plasma table will allow you to cut flat sheets, not tubing unless you put in a 4th axis.
      You could theoretically cut out a wrench like one you use to remove grinder discs and insert 2 hardened rods into it. (that fit into the notches on the special nuts).
      If you're looking for software to draw with, I can point you in the right direction as well.
      Do you have any CAD experience?

    Hey, So the parts catalogue: www.cannell.co.uk/Ferrari_Workshop_Manuals/308_parts%20catalog.pdf
    The workshop manual only exist as 308 GT4 but is the same for 308 GTB / GTS carb: www.cannell.co.uk/Ferrari_Workshop_Manuals/308GT4_workshop%20service%20manual.pdf
    The nuts for the transfer case have regular hexagonal variants as replacements here: www.superformance.co.uk/308/eg.html
    If you need to overhaul the distributors there is no manual but there is a guy that explains it step by step, i can get that for you if I really search. Pertronix has a points replacement system I recommend, the mechanical advance weights will have to be retained. For carb tuning Birdman's guide is a good one. I have done a complete rebuild on this car, nut by nut so I'll keep watching and help if I can. I also have some original 308 US version parts that are left over as I have converted mine to an exact EURO spec, good luck! PS: I also have a cylinder head custom press if you need to take them of and a template for them also.

      A WELL-SERVICED Ferrari engine is reliable, and there is no-better performance for this car that could possibly come out of a Civic or Accord.

    If you're working-on a Ferrari - WITHOUT a Service-Manual....you're not working on a Ferrari. You're dismantling it in a manner that makes it TWICE as hard to re-assemble. You need to do some homework, my friend.....

    • @LouTrottier
      @LouTrottier  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thanks for the comment and I appreciate your thoughts. However I am not a DIY'er. Any proper licensed technician with 30+ years of experience will tell you that taking something apart by the seat-of-your-pants actually helps with re-assembly as you much more aware of how it came apart. I will grab a digitized manual for torque specs though.

      @@LouTrottier My Ferrari mechanic enjoys a healthy income fixing the mistakes of other "trained expert mechanics" who have never worked-on a Ferrari before, didn't read the service-manual, or didn't have the proper Ferrari-specific tools for the job. My own 308 was worked-on by someone who thought a screwdriver was the proper tool to adjust the valves - all of the valves were scored with that screwdriver, and the compression/leakdown numbers indicated the head needed a complete set of new valves. After a fresh set of shims and guides, the total cost for just the head-work was over $7,000, not-including new gaskets and seals. Mistakes can be VERY expensive....FYI.

    • @LouTrottier
      @LouTrottier  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Kidsinamerica I do get and appreciate your statements and If I were dissembling a newer model Ferrari, I wouldn't dare do it without a proper arsenal of factory tools and manuals. But really; an old 308 is pretty hard to screw up. A contemporary Honda Civic requires a more sophisticated skill set than anything from the 70's. Any one who uses a screwdriver to adjust shim style valve adjusters is not a professional and shouldn't be graded as one IMHO.
