haha thanks so much! yeah never really noticed it since I was trying to play what Halpern was doing, which was right for the first half but the second 2 are phrased kinda cool and more poly feeling i guess! was not intended but stoked you caught that! Cheers!
Absolutely killed this song my man! It's cool to see how comfortable you look laying into those crashes.. If it were me and they were that high I'd make a fool out myself! Haha. Keep it up dude!
+Corey Ballenger thanks a ton Corey! this cymbal set up was more for progressive classic rock and since this cover ive definitely lowered them for the more crash heavy songs I cover now :) thanks for watching!
good eye on the electric kit! haha im really grateful that i have it to practice late at night since i work 40 hr weeks. its more for chops than anything hah anyways thanks for checking it out!
Yeah electric kits are only good for chops for the most part, and yeah really quiet. No problem, will be hard getting out another at 40 hrs per week but I look forward to next video!
really appreciate it the kind words! stoked to hear you've seen some of the other ones! I got a couple more songs lined up that i will hopefully get out within the next month!
Dude! beast as usual! Ive been listening the crap outa this song lately and was thinking "i wonder if there is a drum cover?" so I searched it on youtube an urs was the first that came up! killed it man! Btw have you ever heard of a band called "The Helixnebula"? i think youd dig em, its instrumental prog djent stuff but its KILLER in my opinion man! an for the 10,000 views! haha give it couple weeks and youll be up to like 50,000! but congrats! an keep it up, youve got some of the highest quality covers in my opinion man! again, killed it!
thanks a ton David! glad you dig my covers! means a lot! and yeah I love The Helix Nebula, i actually got to hang out with the Bassist Simon when he was here in the states with Plini and Intervals. super nice guys and awesome show
Dude i love ur covers! an thats awesome man! i wanted to go to that show so bad... i couldnt get a ride to i think it was Arkansas? somewhere around there, but thats awesome man! an hes a beast basist, an those bands are killer, did you see Anup Sastry?
Hey, great cover man! I'm transcribing and learning this right now, and can't wait till I'm finished. Your performance will definitely be one I look to.
no joke that section rivals AAL's Backpfeifengesicht kick pattern as one of the most physically challenging parts ive ever had to play! watching it today i can tell im struggling hard to keep the hi hat going haha! thanks for watching!
@@andrewspurr4137 haha yea i do! its not as clean as i would have liked but keeping the hihat consistent at 8th notes makes the kick pattern soooo much harder! thanks for the kind words!
thanks a ton my friend for watching it all the way through! this song is so good it deserves to be played in its entirety haha! keep an eye our for my MOTORMOUTH drum cover coming out soon! Cheers Jay!
Andrew Toy Thanks a lot Andrew! I actually just learn songs by ear. i do take notes on certain sections but it usually is just to see how the snare and kick work together on some more complicated poly-rhythmic song likes my AAL Para Mexer cover. thanks for watching tho!
Garrett Kiefer Thanks! Ive been playing for most of my life and have always just played along to bands in my garage and with friends, so finally i decided to start posting stuff for the TH-cam world to see! haha
Higher cymbals reduce the bleed picked up by other mics because they're farther away. But i'm the same way... I just naturally like my cymbals higher which is a plus.
sorry for the late response! just saw this for some reason.. and yeah, i learned all by ear! I have this kinda weird method where I make circles for all the quarter notes and then fill them in for kick and snare hits for more complicated sections hahah! thanks for commenting! Cheers!
Curious, how do you go about learning this song? Did you write it out first? Or just learn it by ear? I really want to nail this one down and any advice would be great =)
carlinabbott whats up man! here are the three main ways i guess i really learn my covers1) repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition . . . you get it lol 2) find a program to slow down tracks to get down the nitty gritty details, i just use my Sonar DAW 3) Most importantly, just listen to the song as a whole and enjoy it! a lot of the learning process is getting the feel of the song and really listening to bass lines and guitar riffs to get an idea of how the drummer is complementing it all hope this helps and keep playing! Cheers!
great job, Matt! can you describe a little basic steps of making this cover? I love it very much and wanna play it but I am confused to start cover it.
Костянтин Калачіков thanks for watching! i really appreciate it! Some simple tips on how i do these drum covers: 1) listen to the song and get the over all understanding of the structure 2) break the song up into certain sections and learn each section at a time 3) practice the song all the way through for the natural flow
+Kostyantyn Kalachikov dude I've transcribed the section of the song that begins at about 2:52 and ends at 3:20 , I could send you the notes if you want!
What did you do to learn this song? Literally my favourite song off this album but there's so much going on! Really enjoyed this cover too, Props to you :)
this song is one of their best! I learned by ear and would just practice section by section looping it until I understood what was going on and then until muscle memory got a little more dialed in! Thanks so much for watching and commenting Daniel! Cheers!
Not that I could do it, but half the time your left hand was doing nothing - ghost notes exist for a reason; look sexy all the time like you did in the solo
Really great cover ! I know how difficult it is to play I love this song and i am trying de play it. But the drum bass part between 3:20 and 3:49 is to difficult for me ... too much speed !! I persevere...
thanks so much for watching Vincent! Yeah the part at 3:20 is hard! You'll get there! Just take it slow for muscle memory and then the speed will come! Cheers!
Nails the ghost notes on the bridge and then misses the slash hits after. Epic. haha just messing :p sick cover! Very fluid and tight! Keep up the good work.
+Mike McLaren Drumming its such a fun song to play/learn! I still love the fill going into the drum breakdown with the alternating hands and feet! i have some notes i wrote down a while back if you want me to send them to you over FB. its about matt's solo. let me know! Cheers!
2:55 i was like, man he really is playing low, he should put the seat higher or the drums lower, he will hit his hh hand with his snare hand eventually, or get the snare hand stuck in the hitha...3:05
yea definitely! haha I really liked having the snare about an inch higher then i do now like in my ERRA cover i posted last month ( th-cam.com/video/_kirbFcO_ag/w-d-xo.html ). switching to the hi hat for that accent transition is what got my sticks caught. thanks for watching!
He shreds it up man. He's also got a kit setup that almost makes me scratch my head, his cymbals are so far away from him haha. But he freaks rocks it.
Sean Davis thanks brotha! yea that is definitely the hardest part of the mix and what im working with to get a good kick drum to sound separate from the original track with out turning the song too low . . . all part of the learning process! haha hopefully this next cover will have a better drum sound! Thanks for watching!
+Michel Shelley Easily the most technical section ive had to transcribe! This and the ending of Para Mexer by Animals As Leaders!! Thanks for watching :)
Sick cover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks dude! glad you checked this one out too! love that you posted again too! Absolomb is probably my favorite of their PIII album!
3:35 i fvckng love how u timed that china crash man. god tier.
haha thanks so much! yeah never really noticed it since I was trying to play what Halpern was doing, which was right for the first half but the second 2 are phrased kinda cool and more poly feeling i guess! was not intended but stoked you caught that! Cheers!
@@MattHernandezDrums yea man its so good i had to slow the play speed to understand what happened there hahahaha
@@MattHernandezDrums Im tried to do it, but my muscles just wont agree XD
I know nothing about playing drums but that timing looks extremely difficult. Amazing cover
Excellent cover
That drumsolo gave me goosebumps, your ghost notes are flawless.
+Iversen Covers thanks Iversen! checked out your covers also and they were sick! cant wait to see more! Cheers!
+Matt Hernandez Wow, thanks alot! Hopefully I'll get around to doing some periphery soon!
Great work mate! Looks so relaxed playing... and that groovy part (2:55) really grooves. *thumbs up*
Pasi Nopanen thanks Pasi!

+Chris Smith thanks so much for watching me play one of my favorites! Cheers!
2:51 - 3:48 = Amazing! The whole cover is awesome, but this part... holy moly man, you rocked it! Keep it up!
Ad thank for the kind words! That section was the reason I chose the song so im stoked that you liked it!
Awesome cover man. Loving that single pedal bass work around 3:20 especially
DarkArchon212 Thanks for watching! that sections is no doubt the most physically challenging part of the song :)
Wow, blown away! Great playing man!
Thanks UltimaRedFireEskimo!! . . .never thought id type those words in that specific order ... haha! glad you liked it!
Love this tune. Few songs have this much punch. Great cover, thumbs up!
thanks so much!
That lonely electric kit in the corner lol
Sick cover man, really accurate! Glad to see people coming out to cover this new material!
good eye on the electric kit! haha im really grateful that i have it to practice late at night since i work 40 hr weeks. its more for chops than anything hah

Paul Uedingslohmann thanks for subscribing! i really appreciate it! been working on a new cover so ill hopefully post it within the next week or so
Damn I still can't believe he did that with single pedal at 3:20.
no joke that section rivals AAL's Backpfeifengesicht kick pattern as one of the most physically challenging parts ive ever had to play! watching it today i can tell im struggling hard to keep the hi hat going haha! thanks for watching!
Thats how Matt does it tho
This was just too perfect!
+SynysterReverend glad you liked it man!!
Killing it Matt!
thanks Josh
The broken china at 4:42 when you tried to spin to the unbroken side was great haha.. i know that feeling all to well.
+Joe Powers and it went a full rotation so it didnt help at all . . .haha thanks for watching man! cheers!
Really nice foot work during the solo and the bridge part
+Justin Sanker without a double the most difficult part of the song! haha thanks for watching!
Yea I can't believe you used one foot from 3:20 to 3:47. Must be an awesome foot workout. Amazing
@@andrewspurr4137 haha yea i do! its not as clean as i would have liked but keeping the hihat consistent at 8th notes makes the kick pattern soooo much harder! thanks for the kind words!

thanks for the kind words Jerry! Cheers!
Fukn awesome. Sounded great. Nice job, man.

No worries; I have a student who is working no this song. Very impressive once again! Cheers
Do you have a Facebook? I tried my best to put Halern's drum section to paper. I can send you the scan if you'd like
