    Wilbur makes it look so easy and itis. be great to see a handicapped player do that to see different mindset on those three holes

    Will is a top lad and great to watch. I think you hit the nail on the head at the end Dan when you talked about strokes gained v skill set. As far as I understand it, strokes gained is a compilation of elite professional golf tour statistics which illustrate where certain pro's pick up shots, or tenths of a shot, versus the field. Amateur golfers do not have strokes gained statistics to base their own games around - they only have their own experiences to compare against based on their own strengths and weaknesses. As Bernie said, if you are iffy from less than 80 yards then don't put yourself there! As handicap golfers we just need to play to our relative strengths, be realistic, and play the percentages. As Bob Rotella says in Golf is not a Game of Perfect, its better to have a cocky swing with a conservative strategy than a conservative swing with a cocky strategy!

      This is wrong. Strokes gained is based on data collected from both pro and amateur games.

    Great point about planning out the hole from the flag backwards which I learned to do years ago in my amateur competition days. I’m always looking at the pins on contiguous holes as I play the round, and if I can drive round the course on my way to the course I will do so to get a peak at the pins and do some planning of my round before I pull the clubs out of my car. Will has a lot of skill around the greens, I wish him all the best on the tour.

    Interesting to see Wilbur's thinking - shame I don't have his length but the process is still valid especially as our course has very quirky greens where you really need to be on the right side.

    One of the best videos I’ve watched for a while. Most you tube instructional videos focus on technical issues as a way of improving a golfer. This can fill your head with too many thoughts. Whilst this is important, I would say that I squander more shots through poor course management than I do from hitting poor shots. When golf re-starts course management will be the number 1 thing that I’m going to focus on.

    One of the best course management videos I've seen, I play my best golf when my course management is good, but it was nice to see another way of managing the course, also was interesting to hear Will say on the down hill putt he'd rather be 3ft past coming back up, than 3ft down hill, which I agree but I'd be saying don't rush it past the hole if that makes sense

    Good stuff lads, I like the thought from “Lowest Score Wins” which is “to SAFELY remove as much distance between you and the hole with every shot”. Can’t wait for the courses to open again.

    I really think it's helping Will playing & learning from Paul. A player who plots his way round a course and rarely puts himself in positions where he going to throw away multiple shots. Also Will seems very mature for such a young guy.

    Brilliant course/training vlogs guys. Your content is by far the best on any golf channel ive seen. Brilliant mix of videos. I especially need more like this. Ive played since the age of 10 but average 6 rounds a year. Playing off 12ish however my plan is after lockdown to focus on breaking 80. Because of the my lack of golf i tend to play all holes the same. Driver off the tee then deal with the outcome when i get to the ball. Videos like theses are prefect for people like me and hopefully i will learn for them.(saved for future viewing) Next time when you edit the video put a little flyover when your on the tee. You descript the hole brilliantly however a little visual would in my opinion make then already brilliant video a mindblower.🥳
    Keep well guys. Love to see you on tour in north lincs.

  • @craig3775
    @craig3775 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great informative video Dan. I think the strokes gained concept is very relevant to Tour Pros searching for that marginal gain but handicap/club golfers don't need to have the impression that "closer and further" is necessarily better. It is better but you require the skill set to get there safely which is often the problem for club golfers, the 180-220 yard approach shots. Perhaps you could play 3 or 4 holes with a Pro, a scratch handicapper and a mid handicapper? Their approaches to those holes would better reflect the true art of course management. Great video, very enjoyable watching Will rip it around. I hope he gets plenty of tour starts this year.

    Been playing for 50+ years and never really thought my way around. Luckily I was long off the tee with a good short game to bail me out. Now I'm still decent length but my short game isn't as good, so my scores and hdcp have gone up some the last few years. I appreciate this vlog to make me like you said play like it's a chess game. Once Spring hits and the snow is gone I can't wait to actually plot my way around instead of know where to hit it but really poke and hope. Thanks fellas

    I'm of the opinion that the closer you are to the hole the easier the shot is (generally, I know there are some exceptions). I'd take a 40 yard shot over a 100 yard shot 98% of the time. Nice thinking vlog Dan, Lester, and Will!

    Great advice given, I totally agree with playing the hole mentally backwards from the green. I will play 75% of par 4's back from the green 100 yrds ( my ideal yardage for PW) and the remaining yardage from the tee dictates the club I use.

  • @arthuracorn
    @arthuracorn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you are spot on Dan, I play best laying up to 100 yard shots in , I am playing off 27 and improving all the time but know that an errant tee shot that is 30 or so yards further on but in the rough is harder to convert than a full wedge shot. Best thing I have learned is distance gapping and wedge shots, I am now trying to progress my driver skills and control of the tee shot although I am usually ok with a three wood.
    Can you put an end to lockdown please?

  • @martinblackmore4515
    @martinblackmore4515 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is great content. One other tip I picked up was to do a gapping session with all clubs at the beginning of the year. However, I write the carry distance on the club with a shape. I think I got that from Lee Westwood, it's a great help. The other was knowing by the club the absolute max carry, as I want to be aware of that as well when selecting the shot. I can't calibrate the shortest length because that is very variable and is a shot-making issue, but knowing the longest carry is very useful.

    These are my favourite type of instructional videos. I got a lot of out these. Also like the discussion on strikes gained, it’s not just about getting it close to the hole every time. Golf is a game of misses and over 18 holes you can’t go for it every time. #morelikethese!

  • @rolandcolegate8228
    @rolandcolegate8228 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like Dan's comment of looking at the 17th green to see where the flag is situated when you are playing the adjacent 1st hole, unfortunately as a senior golfer I would have forgotten where that was by the 3rd hole !! (note book needed ?).

    • @mjsgolf7004
      @mjsgolf7004 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Write it on your score card Roland !! I look at all the flags on the holes as I drive up our long drive past 6 greens. I also look to see if the tee is up on one of our hardest holes, it lifts the spirits to see it off the forward tee !!

    Lester summed it up perfectly. “Play to your strengths” .
    Whatever your handicap, and I’m 61,playing off 22, I know not to leave a 20 yd pitch/chip, as it’s curtains for me.
    Much prefer to look at a 3 stroke strategy to get to the green rather than trying to take the skin off the ball and top it into trouble.
    Another great video to get us all prepared for the day we get the green light to play again, probably coinciding with the clocks changing and the courses will be in great condition

    I always make a note on my card of flag positions on every hole I can see in advance as I walk past them through the round, takes a lot of guess work out and helps to play that extra 10 yards when needed. On the card mark BL, BR, ML, MR, FL, FR etc

  • @aaronduncan8596
    @aaronduncan8596 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Strokes gained is a great way to think, but you have to keep the ball in play first. For a 15 handicap like me, it’s about keeping the ball in play and eliminating big numbers on the card. Always love hearing how different players plot around the course and have an understanding of their game and how to best score for them.

    As a high handicapper I take more shots and therefore longer to play holes - which equally gives me less time to walk up to a green, for example, to get a better of idea of how to play a shot onto a green. A bit of a vicious circle - I can do this but speed of play is always a concern when you have 6+ shots on a few holes per round!

    Although I absolutely love Dan’s Vlogs he does still continue to concentrate his ‘training’ Vlogs on lower handicap players. If you are like me and play to a twenty something handicap have a watch on TH-cam of either sidekick’s ‘breaking 100/90’ or even OMP on Golfmates. They are a little more relatable for us weekends sloggers!

    As an Amateur golfer, (and not the best striker of the ball) the single biggest improvement I made this year, was to try and hit everything ten yards past the pin, but the reality was that I wasn't ten yards short all the time. (we tend to over-estimate how far we hit each iron.) For the average 12 handicapper, ambition far out-weighs ability.

    Interesting comments re. playing for different sides of the fairway depending on pin location. This is the opposite (most of the time) of what DECADE suggests as a) the angle into a green rarely matters much, and b) even if it does, you lose more shots over time by moving your dispersion pattern into trouble (trees, thicker rough etc...).
    Statistically, you're better off keeping your dispersion away from areas that can give big penalties.

    Always good to watch the big man playing golf .... on the point about flag positions; on my course there are 6 or 7 holes where you can’t see flag off the tee. (And you’ve not walked past them or near them to take note) Do you think clubs / green keeper should publish the pin positions with the starter ? I’m thinking a board near the first tee? Do TGC do this?

    Ps after watching till end I’m not good enough a player to even think about strokes gained it’s a complete irrelevance !
    It’s more a case of not being intimidated by a hole that I don’t even get passed the ladies tees or actually still have a ball in play
    I’ve tried playing holes backwards & selecting where I want the next shot from but it just doesn’t work out

    Just had a thought to add. How about relating this to the average golfer by using yourself or Will but you aren't allowed hybrids or woods? That way you drive the ball less than 220 and face the same challenges of the average club golfer. Just a thought.

    Great vlog. Wilburs mentality is great to see. I’m interested to know why Bernies clothing sponsorship has never been mentioned in any recent vlogs? Lee mentioned they both had it in one of his vlogs..

    Great video Dan. You guys are a class act. Very clear that all three of you know so much about the game. I particularly like how you ask Will the right questions to tease the good answers out of him for the video.
    I think you've mentioned it in a video before but whats the extendable tripod for phone that Lester was holding? Is it a Joby?

      Yeah a joby, it’s not great in the wind, keeps falling over

      @@DanHendriksenGolf thanks Dan. I did wonder if it would be a bit easy to blow over. I’ve seen one called the irange pro which sticks in the ground but I think I’ll get a gorilla pod

    This video gets me thinking about how I want to play each hole and not just grab the driver and hit away.
