Thanks, having this as a real conversation at the ball really helps it stick in my mind. Not just a coaching talking , but actually teaching one-on -one
Brilliant concept - loved it and yes it will definitely help me feel more confident and consistent on the golf course - especially when choosing where to hit my next shot
Good tip. Just an add on, when you suggested the 7 iron over the 5, maybe a next shot after it would help players think ‘big picture’ ie by hitting the 7 iron will avoid the bunker….& allow you to wedge the next shot close to the pin. But I do personally like the 7/10 rule as it helps to think strategy rather than a no thought shot & hit whatever 👍
I am playing Oakmont CC tomorrow to qualify for states (top 11 scores out of 35). I was able to play a practice round and It was no easy course 😂 oh.. wish me luck!!
If that is the only club you can hit to your target 70 per cent or more of the time - but assuming you are proficient with other clubs the model applies to most other clubs as well #Truthof73
Thank you for this lesson. I'm working hard on my decision making and playing to my strengths and it seems to be working well. The 7/10 rule makes a lot of sense - moving from "possible" shots to "probable". BTW - if I'm not mistaken, are you standing on the white tees on the 6th at Bungool? When you said you were in WA I had a double take! Cheers from Sydney - Dave
@@GolfUniversity Thanks indeed. The intro really looks like it was filmed as mentioned. No doubt the rest of the vid was at Joondalup. It's uncanny how much that view is like Bungool's 6th with those bunkers, the single tree, the reeds etc. :-)
Good advice, for me ,adding to that chose would be the wind, wet ground, tall or shot grass and how well you have been hitting up until then. is that 70/30 for Pros's or hackers or those who actively work on their swing to reach their goals ? And would that be the way to go all the time? if your playing for money and you had the skills in you short game to cover the deficit, that would be a smart approach. i also think however, it's got to be the challenge, Like Jordan Spieth, I'm gonna try something stupid! moment. Would that not have have given him more confidence to continue choosing clubs that go beyond the 70/30 rule? I would have liked to see you hit the 5 iron first, and then hit the 7iron and see the difference and finish the hole with both balls!! granted the 7 was a safer way to go yet every shot you take is a challenge. hitting the 5 iron would have been just as important!. like those using blades, say, it gives you feed back if you miss hit it. that 5iron shot would have given you good feed back one way or the other. When do you, then chose your 5 iron ? It was a good opportunity to stretch and skill up on you long irons if nothing more. My HC has come down from 25 to 10 not just because of a consistent swing and playing within the 70/30 rule but also from pushing my doubt and trying something stupid long enough , till it became a good go to shot.
Great questions icu Rad - I think the overriding concept is play within yourself and play smart (be that a pro or amateur) - there may be times you have to go for it but if your percentages are only 10-20% of getting near your target then don't be disappointed when the other 80-90% do not give you the result you are after - well done on coming down from 25 to 10 too
Good question - the goal is to play personal par golf - which means if you get 1 or 2 shots on the hole then add that to the actual par - this will allow you to play within yourself and bring your handicap down a lot faster - the 70% model means you play every shot knowing that you can hit that shot atleast 70% of the time - not 10% of the time like most golfers - it's not about laying up but about playing to your percentages - try it and I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy and enjoyable your golf becomes, because you are not only playing more to your percentages but you are playing within yourself which will decrease the emotional spikes that most golfers experience when they play 10% golf - let us know how you go
This Course Management lesson is possibly one of the hardest to stick to - do you agree? and if so why do you think it is so hard (especially for men) to play within themselves and not always go for the hero shot?
It sure is hard to stick to but I guess that's the secret to golf - managing your ability over expectations - which is a mental skill more than a physical one
i have to say this is making things to complex guys, when we are serving a tennis ball,we look at the ball but our mind is on the box we want to land the ball!!! do the same when playing golf,if the problem is 140 yards, have enough club to swing smooth to clear the hazzard. it's not so difficult, just do what you do in every day life. i say this in a respectful way guys. falling into the trap of over complicating this wonderful game.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts John - Can you articulate the part that you find over complicating? Fix your state and the rest takes care of itself? Surely this is a lot simpler than the multitude of conflicting golf swing lessons etc out there - which part do you find complicating?
saying the bunker is massive, umm instead of saying how far to clear the bunker, take a club that you know can clear the bunker swinging within yourself. your not planting fear into people, just common sense. Thank you for your reply.
I disagree because in a non tournament, this is when you get to practice the 30% success shots to get them to 70%. You should always play the shot and risk it if not in a tournament situation. Then play a second ball with your 70% option. Why you ask, because driving ranges don’t give you anything but a flat lie and little to no strategy to work with. Heck, you can’t even practice your fairway bunkers. I play 5 rounds at least that are nothing more than practice rounds, don’t keep score and play 3 balls. Others in the group do their game, I do mine and not holding anyone up.
It's not a rule but a way of thinking before you play your shots so that you can play within yourself - try it - you will see it works - if you allow yourself to play within yourself that is....possibly the hardest thing for all golfers to do 😀
@@br5448 being conscious of it will definitely help as most people get up to the ball and just try to smash it as far as they can 😀 this at least gives you a plan before each shot and when combined woth some of our other models makes a huge difference

This video was shot very well and I love how it was more of a conversation. Love your channel, cheers!

Thanks Rich - it's possibly our best teaching methodology as we feel it resonates with all golfers out there facing the same challenges
I like that! Or, practice more so the clubs that aren't a 7/10 become that!
Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Exactly..ideally they should all hit the target 7 out of 10 times or more 😀
@@GolfUniversity would love to do a vid with you at our club. Don't be shy!
Love this concept Golf University - makes playing golf feel easy :)
It sure does especially when you combine it with the target golf and personal par models that we teach in our programs

When would you take on a shot that is a bit more risky?
Great question Hilda - when you are 100 per cent confident you can play the shot and get the result you want atleast 70 per cent of the time 😀
Yes
Great to hear Brian - what was your biggest take home learning from the lesson?
So I should play only with my pitching wedge?
