    Loving these Course Management tips. My WHS index is 20 and I'm really struggling to hit under 90 regularly: I've decided that from now on I MUST think differently and resist the temptation to consider distance as a priority over safety & playability!

    That last hole.... you need to get as close to the tree as you can off the tee... just an easy punch shot down the hill... i know.. everyone’s a critic!!!! Great vid guys xx

    Love the video Dan and Lee. I play with my father at Bowood Wiltshire. Father is 82 and now plays off 13 (ex Wilts County golfer +2 lowest). He moans he hasn't got distance off tee but hits straight down fairway with more club. His strength is 150 yards in! Chipping and putting comes into its own. Distance isn't everything, especially a tight course or hard links with hard fairways and greens!

    This is an excellent episode. This is where Bob Rotella's teaching can be applied - each shot is the only thing that matters at the time, not the last shot, not the score, only that shot that you are about to make - and fully commit to that shot. Very good educational video - course management should be the subject of more videos. Well done.

    Hey Dan and Lee, since you have been doing these videos it has made me think more about my game and how I manage the course, after getting a lesson and improving my ball striking as well as course management, I have dropped my handicap by 3 shots in the last couple of month's.

    He's not wrecking the video haha actually proving your point. By showing how when you take the ego out of the game and play responsibly. He can keep confidence up and hit higher percentage shots. I'm a 3 and looking to bring that to my game. Well done Boys (as always) from an east coast Canadian, living in the mountains in the west of Canada.

    The course management made sense what you told lee. He played well . We has golfers have to use it more play it safe. Don't take risks that we don't need to.
    Keeping your emotions in tack is key to having a good game.

    Hi dan and lee I’ve found in the past that worrying about your score all the time can make you become more stressed.Relaxing is a hard thing to do on the course if your always worried about your score as it’s pressure all the time.Ive found if I go out just to enjoy my game and just have and swing smoothly the game becomes easier to deal with,and not to get upset about a strike or shot not being what you expected it to be.Also by being relaxed you don’t tend to try and smash seven bells out of the ball

    • @stephendibari5010
      @stephendibari5010 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      💯. Playing each shot one shot at a time is key and not get stuck on “score”. Don’t want to put too much stress on yourself and then the game goes downhill

    • @juanhunglow2220
      @juanhunglow2220 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely, 1st time I broke 80 I was on the par 3 18th, didn’t know my score. Tee shot into bunker but got up and down for 79. Had I known I needed a par for -80 I know I’d have panicked

    • @rohitpratap4174
      @rohitpratap4174 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      💯 rather than score I try to rate my shot and emotions out of 10 for each shot and try to beat THAT score each time. Got myself down from 15 to 5hcp without much technical analysis with this approach.

    Perfect vlog Dan/Lee on how to attack holes, Break it down from the tee box, If you cant reach the par 5 in two comfortably then play the 3rd shot yardage off the tee, I have played hard par 5's 7 iron, 7 iron, wedge for par and walked on happy. Most courses will set up at least 8-9 holes attackable, live to fight another day( hole) . :)

    Lee's playing well here because he's playing strategic. In many of the vlogs it's "driver all out". If Lee played strategic in the vlogs I think we would see similar success. Great info. Appreciate the insight to course management.

    Some great advice here. I think the last hole sums up a lot of handicap golfers, controlling your emotions to not get overexcited and also realising your going to hit a bad shot and being able to move on from it is a huge part to being able to consistently score well

    Great video. When I first started playing 25 years ago I was able to reach 300 yards with my driver and often straight like an arrow at the practice range, but when I played the course sporadically I was all over the place with my driver and could not keep the ball in play enough to be consistent. Lots of chipping and pitching out of the trees, would not be able to get out of bunkers. Lots of boogie holes and a few blow up holes meant not being able to break 100. My fault was not playing on the course often enough and getting course management lessons. I was bomb the ball at the range to relieve stress like going to the arcade at the mall, but never really took the game seriously, mostly for lack of time, but also lack of money. I quit after several years to finish college and didn't pick up the game till last year again. The point is having distance merely means potential, not anything else. You really need to put the work in all around to have a decent handicap.

  • @robjelley1138

  • @grinnders
    @grinnders 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loved this and how you turned the psychology around for Lee in imagining a different order of scoring. Not being as good as Lee myself, I look at any scoring below handicap as a bonus to put into the bank for accidents later in the round. I usually never get enough 😄 but if you’re not a scratch golfer you should anticipate peaks and troughs in scoring and ‘bank the birdies’ to cash them in against bogeys later.... rather than think you’ve banked the benefit for the bar!

  • @milesotway4466
    @milesotway4466 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really helpful video. I play off 21 and am basically a (much) worse version of Lee. Longish hitter for my handicap with potential to get pars and birdies but then a 3 off the tee or two with driver, head goes and that does for all the good play. Need to leave driver in the bag way more than I do.

    Lee’s striking the ball much better than I remember. On the mishit hybrid...I wonder if he wouldn’t have been better off hitting a 4-iron or 5-iron. Generally more control with irons than hybrids (off the deck)...at least for me 😎. The greens looked really slow...Lee did well to only 3 putt once. Thanks for the course vlog Dan...really well done 👍⛳️

    I relate very much to Lee’s game in many, many ways. I’m mid-40’s, started playing about 5 years ago, strike the ball very well, and am a similar HCP. I play a lot of narrow and unforgiving courses and suffer from the odd miss-hit, score crushing, lost ball- and a lot of it stems from rushing and over excitement. Basically my driver is unplayable on these courses, so play 5w almost exclusively and typically carry it around 240y with a smooth swing. I might consider going a few weeks with irons only, actually 7i and under, and try to reduce the excitement level and distance chasing game.

    Great course lesson Lee, Dan! I love these lesson videos. The extra tips Dan is giving us are so useful we all get better scores if we follow up on them. Can you also do a video sometime on how best to navigate on a course you never played before. What to do with blind shots? Where and where not to attack. I play so many courses I’ve never played before as I’m not a member of any club. So I can use some extra advice. Thanks again I really enjoyed it.

    Really enjoy these course management videos. Lee hits the ball miles further than me but I still take a lot away from a video like this. High handicappers like me normally have poor course management. I have 17 shots that I can use and need to use my shots rather than trying to hit too many miracle shots.

  • @andrewg8244

    Important lessons. Ty. I have similar issues to Lee (long but unreliable with driver) and force myself to choke down and play percentages.

    Great video ... again ! I play off 11 but as you rightly said Lee is a long hitter, I can only dream of hitting my driver as far as his 3 wood! Chasing the 3rd par 5 was his downfall, possibly a 7 iron then 8 iron was the percentage play.

    Really enjoy this series, yes Lee is too good not to be a single figure handicap, but the condition of the course was very wet and the ball was not running on the fairways or the green, over 18 holes that's going to add several shots to your score !!

    I'm definitely like lee with the driver its an absolute lottery LOL and its almost the only thing that effects my game but drivers fun isn't it and when you nut it it puts a big smile on ya face 😁 although when u hit it a decent distance you dnt want to give away what feels like an advantage so u almost talk yourself into pulling it out of the bag! It does show the importance of course management if u want to score well! try not to get too down or too excited either! Good vid Dan 👍

    Definitely feel for Lee. I am in a somewhat similar place, where my tee game (driver mainly) usually causes me the most problems in terms of extra strokes. I also have pretty decent distance and will pull back to hitting 3 wood or even 4 iron from the tee when things are going off the rails. While I often don't give up too much compared to people I play with by doing that, it certainly feels like I'm leaving an advantage on the table... But only if I know it can be in play. As you say, we all want to hit driver because it's fun, but it can certainly be a buzz kill when you are constantly taking extra shots off each tee

    Think you hit the nail on the head Dan, most mid handicappers would struggle to do what Lee is doing. He is hitting low single figure shots. Most 12-15 handicappers can't get those strikes. Some may have power but no direction, others might be straight but much shorter. Wont be long before Lee is 6-8

    When its on its on and my game just works. I am similar to Lee. I hit it long but you know....
    I have left my driver at home once and played without it and used my 5 wood instead and it worked very well. But it wasn't as much fun and thats what matters in the end. Golf is fun and hitting a bomb with the driver is the greatest feeling.

Been casual golfer for couple years, only became a member this year, haven’t got to play as much as I had hoped, but starting out at 22. Will be trying to manage my way around smarter, combined with lessons, so target is 18 or lower this year

    As Lees standing over the ball ready to pull the trigger. Dan:: "stay away from that tree at all costs". Wonder what Lees brain heard there?! Best to have backed him off the ball and reaffirmed where you DO want to send the ball. Or ask him what hes going to hit before he walks in.
    Some like the think box and play box.The play box rules were broken by asking him what he was trying to do with it while he was over the ball. Obv get what you doing to show audience what need to think about. But do it before he walks in then after that just leave him to it.

      Absolutely agree, the last thing you want to say before hitting a shot is avoid something. You need to be thinking purely about where you want to hit it and not where you don't want to.

    Thanks for the informative video, one small request, can you add either a map of the hole or a fly over when describing the strategy. Sometimes it’s difficult to visualize the hole from the video and it is a bit confusing if you don’t know the course layout.

    I’m the same as Lee. Driver is my weakness. I don’t really need to hit it, my 3 wood goes far enough but I just want to 😂
    I don’t like to be beaten!
