Have been daily driving my 968 coupe for the last 12 years.... 214,000 and counting.....the coupe is the better option for UK roads, although I’ve updated the suspension with Koni’s adjustable, and refreshing the bushes and springs, everything else as delivered, full leather, climate control, yada yada....
@@thavashgovender4345 it’s never let me down, or stranded anytime, it gets used not every day now, as I’ve now acquired a 2008 Cayman S for daily duties.
@JayEmm at 6:12 marker in this video you can see that this car's Airbox has been modified. Unfortunately incorrectly and I think will have a negative effect on HP. Normally, there is a cold air intake that run out of that square-ish port for a snorkel and down out of the engine compartment to get cold air from below the car. This one as the missing that snorkel. Instead it implements a popular mod which cuts four additional ports, the rounded holes in the front of the air box to try to increase air supply. That's fine, however in order for that to work correctly a shroud needs to be installed to isolate the heat from the engine compartment from entering the airbox. That separation missing here and effectively what is happening is your cold air intake is now a hot air intake. That's unfortunate.
Drove a 968 as a daily driver for 10 years and 165.000 miles. Great car, very practical. Not super quick, but quick enough for a daily driver. Changed it for a 933, but thinking of buying one again (not selling the 993, that is a great car as well). Had a 944 and 944s2 before as well. But the 968 is much better in performance and looks.
I have developed quite the liking of this car, thank you for this video! To me it is the best looking of the front engined Porsches, and unlike the (late) 928 still affordable in Germany.
Excellent Jay, just recently sold my 1995 968 Sport after 15yrs (& trouble free) ownership. The MO30 suspension is not good for public roads, standard suspension much better. Also the Sport they only produced for the last year for the UK market was the best selling version for that year. The Sport really is the best version to get for road use, with the extra comfort levels, but still retains the Club Sport driving dynamics with same suspension. The big bonus is that it's quite a bit cheaper to buy than a similar condition Club Sport, which has become the most desirable & expensive (unjustifiably really) version, from (as you rightly said) the least expensive when new.
15 years ownership and trouble free that’s amazing, hopefully own a coupe or 944 S2 at some point. Why did you sell the car if you don’t mind me asking. I published a video on a slate gray 968 you might like, feel free to check it out. I also think a base 718 boxster for sub £35k is a bargain.
I remember seeing one for the first time alongside a 964 Turbo S Flatnose, 930 Turbo 3.3, and many other classics during a gathering of classic Porsches last year. I am a happy boy, considering my favourite Porsche when I was a small boy was the transaxle Porsches, especially 968CS and 928GTS.
After owning my old 944, I realized porsche makes the best cars in the world. Mine was high mileage, but still purred, and could still outrun entry level 'sporty' cars. No rust. Electrical problems, of course, but I didn't care. It ran well. The ride was comfortable, yet, well balanced for spirited driving. Another reason I think Porsche is on another level. They aren't for drivers looking to upgrade and tune. And yes, parts aren't cheap. Trust me, you won't be disappointed in this car if you like momentum cars.
Loved my one here in Australia, we got a lot of these (100 I think). Mine was Red, all the Aussie spec cars came with Air-Con a requirement here, we also got Recaro buckets in them as well no Sports here. I always remember you could drive it hard into a corner and not worry about the brakes.
James, i always nod in approval when you talk about the 50/50 weight distribution being nonsense :-D Memories of Alonso winning the championship with Renault with the most rear-biased F1 car (it used to kill rear tyres). Great car in white. Looks like you had a lotta fun driving it.
I had one of these in the late 90’s, amazing handling, weedy brakes without the M030 kit. Main problem was in the summer when you’d fry with all that glass and no air con..
James, another way to get a 6 speed gear box in the mid nineties was in a Fiat Punto 6 speed, thrashy with dubious build quality but fun to hustle on the B roads.
Filmed a 944 S2 for my channel, really surprised me what a raw experience it is, and how fast and loud it was. Really great car and would be happy to own either a 944 or 968
I drive a coupe with no sunroof and limited slip diff (both desirable options) and of course, 6 speed and cup 1 wheels and tyres sizes. The CS is so much more expensive and tbh if you want to drive daily, the standard is practically as fast, comfier and great for long journeys. Still rare but compared to the CS, a bargain. Btw running costs are in my experience very affordable. £500 a year service. Very economical too.
Loved your comment on heeling & toeing, I could not agree more. It even makes a basic car like my Subaru Outback more enjoyable. Today its my father in laws RS4 from 2008, excellent V8 soundtrack when blipping on the downshifts.
Going back to your comment about 50/50 weight distribution not necessarily being ideal. In my experience, which is limited, it does seem to be ideal in four wheel drive vehicles, but not so much in front or rear wheel drives. In front wheel drives a slight bias to the front and rear wheel drives a slight bias to the rear seems beneficial, although the amount of bias also seems to depend on the weight of the vehicle with lighter cars benefitting from a greater bias. As I said, my experience is limited, so these rules may not always apply.
A friend of mine from CH uses his one way over a decade for track days during each season. He has way more expensive Sportscars but he only uses this one for fun on the track. Of course, modified for the use.
Well its single stage paint. You need to stay on top of it with paint protection and keep it garaged. Looks fab when well maintained. Plus with this car, if you leave it outside for too long you will get a cracked dash due to that rear glass greenhouse.

968CS is an fantastic car. I recently supercharged mine to give it the power and torque Porsche should have in the first place (Turbo S and RS too rare and expensive). Having owned nearly every single permutation of 924, 944 and 968 the 968 CS really is the culmination of the Porsche transaxles and a proper drivers car. Now they are more collectable and special the CS is the one to go for whilst if it was a daily car you were looking for a Sport of Coupe were better suited.
You are right that 6 speeds were quite rare, back in 1992-1993, but If I recall correctly the Audi s2 and s4 both had one. As did... wait for it....The Vectra Turbo 4*4. So it did not have to be that expensive to get a car with one. To be fair though, I am sure lots of people couldnt believe the Vectra had a 6-speed back then, when they got into one. Some people who mostly had run a bit older economy cars were hardly used to a 5 speed!

I love the 968 and drove a brand new one back in the day, when my Dad loaned my his 944 Turbo and went down to Porsche and said I am looking at upgrading !!! The new one was oh so good and was the first 6 speed I drove. Would love one today, but the cost is eyewatering for a decent one. They did also make a turbo model of these, but in extremely small numbers (14 cars I think). With over 300bhp, they were very rapid. I seem to remember it was the fastest 4 cylinder car at the time (turbo model), replacing the 924 Carrera which previously held it.
The first Porsche I drove in my Younger Years was a 911 Turbo aka the Widowmaker. I found the car drove like crap, that's why I can't get any excitement for 911 up until today! I ended up selling it when I got into motorbikes and I found myself doing nearly all motorway miles. When it was in for a service I got an offer for it out of the blue and it was sold within days. Great car back in the day though, especially when you're 25 :-)
Such a great machine. The only reason for not owning one ist that I'm living with a 944S2 vert for the last 23 years, accompanied by a 928GTS for 18 years now. Doesn't that tell all about my opinion on these transaxles?
Good video on the car itself it really l could do with the wheels being the same colour as the car would make it visually a lot more appealing. Calibra turbo has a 6 speed too back in the 90’s a video on one of those would be a good shout too.

@JayEmm don't know what's up with this car but normally these don't push around corners. Next time you find yourself in the US, you are welcome to retest with mine. Retest with the upcoming 944 S2 and you will find it shouldn't push either.
I did worse, decided not to buy a 924 Carrera GT in silver to replace my 924 euro turbo w. Carrera GT fenders back in 1998. Still regret it. I still have the 924 and still love it the most even after owning dozens of amazing cars.
The 924 was invisible to me (you had to be around when it came out) so each successive iteration thereof was just as invisible. It just stayed around far too long. As far as your comment on 50/50 weight distribution, I eagerly await that video. I can tell you with no doubt that 50/50 in an Alfa GTV-6 on snow tires in the snow is a blast. Totally different from non 50/50 cars.
The waste gate was impaired on purpose so that it would be slower than the 911. If you fix the waste gate issue on the turbo, it's faster than a 911 turbo from the period and runs 300hp.
@@Fee.1 Gearbox+differential housing= 1. The setup an overwhelming percentage of cars use, which is why the title was a bit odd. Its a necessity because power needs to go to the wheels and thats really the only way to get it done. In this case, last rear mounted front engined transaxle would have been a longer but more appropriate title. With these cars it was simply about balancing.
jay how would u campaire/rate the 968 to the boxter 2,5 as once first porsche/sportscar ? maintance costs/performance etc i would like to see that vid have a good one

Quite like the shape of these but I think I prefer the 944 got to give it to them for actually lowering in the cost when they removed half the car, they now charge for doing that but does removing the headlining actually make it that much lighter🤣?

@JayEmm don't know what's up with this car but normally these don't push around corners. Next time you find yourself in the US, you are welcome to retest with mine. Retest with the upcoming 944 S2 and you will find it shouldn't push either.
I was so close to buying one of these, in that spec. as well. Always regretted not going for it! Still love 'em
I did worse, decided not to buy a 924 Carrera GT in silver to replace my 924 euro turbo w. Carrera GT fenders back in 1998. Still regret it. I still have the 924 and still love it the most even after owning dozens of amazing cars.
@@brunoarslanturk that’s tough. Would be worth some serious money now! At least you get to console yourself with a great car anyway 🙂
I am at work and can't wait when I can watch it. Thanks for the upload.
And now can't wait for S2 which is prettier. Curious if it gonna have fumes issue on open windows.
JayEmm, Intercourse extraordinaire
Always loved them
Even if it is a four cylinder it does actually have a nice sound to it. Maybe because of its larger displacement?
Think you're coming out of Lennoxtown, what a road, magic
I think the club sport was a genius idea by Porsche.
It gave owners (who couldn't afford a 911) a pub banter winning reason for owning one.
Is that sun strip on the windscreen standard? It doesn't look right.
Love the Porsche content.
Great review. Thank you.
Can you do a video on 944 turbo s, seems they did it for a year or two then turned it into the normal turbo
True. These 30 years old 50/50 RWD cars still drive as good as the modern all-electronic ESP gondolas.
The ideal is slightly biased towards the rear. 45/55
@@nova-oy4qy For racing, yes, but not for street.
I drove a cabriolet and was most impressed, big bore 4cyl
I have a regular Coupé from the 968. And Im happy with it. :D :D
The waste gate was impaired on purpose so that it would be slower than the 911. If you fix the waste gate issue on the turbo, it's faster than a 911 turbo from the period and runs 300hp.
Really cool car!!
968 and And x180 lotus would be the dream
If you grew up in the 80s and 90s , these cars were fun to drive. But the maintenance was and always has been pricey
Magnificent wee beastie!
Great video as always!
Oh yes, I've been waiting for this!
Love the pretty scenery!🚘🏞
Only 20 minutes drive from where I live. Lovely road.
Sidenote Jay, every 911, from beginning to current, uses a transaxle, as well as boxter/cayman.
So I should know this but I’ll say pardon my ignorance and ask what the distinction is and what necessitates one over the other
@@Fee.1 Gearbox+differential housing= 1.
@@maxsav007 I suppose he meant front engine transaxle cars possibly as you suggested, thanks for the rundown
Save money. Save weight. Nothing to break. Got it.
Calibra Turbo came with a 6 speed and musta been a big chunk of wedge cheaper too!
Very nice car, and very very desirable now.......even more tomorrow.
Performance Car mag absolutely loved this car. Think John Barker had one as a loaner? Or have I made that up 🤔
Ohhhhh yeah I like 😁😁😁😁😁 didn’t know about this car but glad I do now !!
jay how would u campaire/rate the 968 to the boxter 2,5 as once first porsche/sportscar ?
maintance costs/performance etc i would like to see that vid
have a good one
Lovely car good to see you doing some more porsche videos Jay. Any chance you will review the 944 Turbo and S2? I'd offer my 1990 Turbo to you for a test drive but its off the road currently for some winter garage jobs!
Quite like the shape of these but I think I prefer the 944 got to give it to them for actually lowering in the cost when they removed half the car, they now charge for doing that but does removing the headlining actually make it that much lighter🤣?
Is the 6 speed related to the box in 993?
Where is this? beautiful view, excellent vid!
beautiful car
Cool as car !!
Lovely car.... but the bright white wheels and the off-white bodywork is a nasty combo.
It is a hybrid of a 944 and 928, in design.
Can you track down a 968 Turbo, the one with 305 hp and 175mph top speed.
Very different cars but 928 GTS manual for me. Sold mine a few years ago and regret doing so massively.
you said it perfectly. VERY different cars.
