Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Club Sport Review - The Best Driver's Car Nobody Bought?

  • Today I am driving a 911 Club Sport. A special version of the 3.2 Carrera designed for the niche track day market of the 1980s. Sold in small numbers simply because nobody cared about them, the 3.2 Club Sport has gone on to become a cult classic - but is it really that good?

“It’s a philosophical debate… in lap dancing club. Cultured… educated… but a bit wild and silly too.” JayEmm, you sir, have outdone yourself. That line alone is worth its weight in all the 911 3.2 Club Sports made, including its glory.

What a great review - you've really brought to life just how special this car is. I am super lucky to own one (about 12 years now), and it is my favourite 911 for road driving, bar none (996 RS for track use). A couple of very small points - all the engines were indeed blueprinted (it wasn't an option), but as you righty say, they typically put out 228-235 bhp. The engine had one technical change over standard - sodium filled valves. The list price when new was actually slightly less than a standard Carrera - oh how I wish that was today's pricing regime! And finally, very late cars (like mine - Aug' 89), came with Boge dampers rather than Bilstein, but to the same specification. Anyhow, thank you again for one of the best review of this car I've ever seen! Here's a little clip of my car being driven about 9 years ago....(not quite as professionally done as you JayEmm!) - th-cam.com/video/Ew8DfRu5-yU/w-d-xo.html

I just can't believe the quality of James's content. It's as good as I've seen anywhere, or better. The only thing lacking here is the 200k views they deserve. I don't see others providing this sort of detail on the cars and how they make you feel. Amongst the traditional auto journalists there seems to be an obsession with 0-60 times and lap times, as if that's the best way to chose your performance car. It clearly isn't. A drive across the Scottish glens and did it put a smile on your face and did you get out of the car "happy". That's what it's all about.

Brilliant assessment. A philosophy discussion while getting a lap dance pretty much sums it up. I have the base 3.2 from 1989 which I have tweaked to be closer to a CS and I couldn’t agree more. The chassis isn’t as developed or refined as a 964 or 993 but this is the last of the original 911 chassis with all the pros and cons. Minimalist and the engine flung all the way in the back. Don’t respect it on a wet road and it will bite you. Ask me how I know.
On a more personal note I’ll echo a sentiment which was commented in your 355 video. Your commentary has a Clarkson-esqe wit and literary breadth before he went all laddish and awry. Keep up the excellent work mate.

Interesting review Sir. I remember when these Clubsport versions came out. I think Porsche had a brainwave in 88 of charging folk more for giving them less. Remember tho, during that time they were planning on it's replacement, the 964. I love the 3.2 Clubsport Carrera, for it's simplicity, no electric windows, but the lack of under body corrosion a big crazy one to not tick that box on the order sheet. I have a 1984 3.2 Carrera, also in white. I have spent loads on her, including losing weight with 964RS door cards and lots lots more, so I would say I have a 911 99% as good as any 1988 Clubsport 3.2, but with the additional factory underbody protection.

Most people will switch to electric over time but enthusiasts will still be out there driving petrol cars. I don't think the classic car market will be effected, it makes too much money, it is a multi-billion pound industry after all.

10:10 Pretty much anything with a Petrol Engine and a Manual Gearbox is only going to be going up and up and up in value.

I would add 2 doors and RWD. I recently saw and old pickup truck that sold for good money

You have to love light weight models. They charge you a lot more and give you less. And how much mass are you saving by using manual locks anyway? Somewhat absurd

I don’t think they’ll ever ban the petrol car. Just stop producing new ones and make the old ones crazy expensive to run. They’ll be weekend toys for the rich

With these classic 911's its not about "Performance" figures (top speed & 0-60): its the chassis feel, steering & stopping power all combined to make it an experience. That & the legendary engineering, build quality hand assembled limited build runs which marks them out over a modern Porsche product: mass produced, built to a budget with VW Audi Group parts behind the bodywork & the unforgivable engineering mistakes afflicting the M96 engine cars. That's why a final production 993 sold in 1998 is still around the £60K of its original price while what was a "new Porsche generation" 996 can be picked up for £12k or even less.
